I'm kind of split. I do feel that the community generally does a better job of evaluating games than rushed professional critics who have to crank out review after review, and aggregators like Metacritic in particular do a poor job of capturing nuance, there are occasional instances where mob mentality takes over and one or two displeasing aspects of an otherwise decent game end up resulting in hundreds of one-star reviews (example: Mass Effect 3, which is mostly a good game with a poorly executed ending). I could see the Metascore acting as a hedge against these mobs.

Buy the anniversary edition Madden 25. It comes with a 1 year subscription to NFL Sunday ticket for any device (Mobile and Laptop not TV) It's only a 100 dollars and then you can sell the game for 50+ and only pay 50. As a pats fan in California this was perfect for me!

If you are interested in the story I would recommend getting Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary first in order to get an idea of what Halo is about. It is basically the first Halo game, Halo: Combat Evolved, but remastered for the Xbox 360 on its 10 year anniversary. It has the entire first game's campaign and a multiplayer portion using the engine from Halo: Reach (we'll get to that in a moment).

If you are still interested in the story, go for Halo 2 next. It is for the original Xbox, but is also compatible with the 360 so you can play the campaign. It no longer has online multiplayer, though, so it is only good for local custom games and the campaign.

If you purchased Halo 2 you are probably interested enough in the Halo universe to continue the Master Chief's story. The next game will be Halo 3. Halo 3 is a great game and still has online multiplayer, though it is fairly sparse right now.

Note: Halo 3 will become available for free download on July 1st if you have Xbox Live Gold.

Halo 4 is the next game in line that follows the story of the Master Chief, however, there are two other games that were released between them.

Halo 3:ODST is one of these two games. It takes place during the events of Halo 2, but you play as a normal soldier rather than the Master Chief who is a Spartan. Spartans are basically supersoldiers. Normal humans who were augmented to be faster, stronger, and smarter than normal people. It is a fun game and comes with the Halo 3: ODST campaign and a second disc that contains all the multiplayer maps for Halo 3 which allows you to play Halo 3 online.

The other game is Reach. In Halo: Reach you play as a Spartan supersoldier, but not the Master Chief. This game takes places chronologically before the first Halo game, Halo: CE, but was released in 2010. It still has a decent multiplayer population, but I am not sure if is more than Halo 4.

The final game is Halo 4, the newest in the series. It follows the story of the Master Chief after Halo 3, and I believe it has the most populated multiplayer as of right now. Though, the numbers are still fairly low compared to other shooter games out there. This will be the game you will want if you are only interested in online play.

Mass Effect 3 is $20 on Amazon at the moment. Mass Effect 2 is $19 for the 360, $18 for the PS3, and $8 for the PC. Mass Effect 1 is on sale for $10-15 (used) on the 360 and $5-9 (used) on the PC.

If you're patient you can probably get Mass Effect 1 and 2 for ~$10 during Amazon's holiday sale. Mass Effect 3 was even on sale last month for $16 through Origin.

What about Halo Anniversary, which has few gameplay changes (Only an unneeded kinect feature, and xbox live coop), but does have impressive graphic and sound updates, and you can switch back to the old graphics at will? It was also $40 at launch, while providing very obvious significant graphic updates. vs DSR where a lot of things you can't tell if they were updated or not, and the things that are obvious improvements, clash with the art style or the relatively low fidelity of the thing next to them.

My favorite game is...

I have been DYING(see what I did there?) to play The Walking Dead on Xbox 360. They released the first episode of it for free on the marketplace and now that I've played part of the game, I NEED the rest of it!! I need something to hold me over until the next season...

• One of my highest items are these light bulbs. Why? We moved into a house during Thanksgiving weekend last year. One by one each of our light fixtures have blown their bulbs. We've been getting bulbs as we can, but we still need about 40 bulbs to be able to say we have light everywhere we need it.
  
  
  
• Another highest priority item is this Kindle. It's for our 13 year old daughter, who has ADHD and is bipolar. She had another one that she very accidentally dropped on her way to school (she has special permission from her principals and teachers to have it at school. It helps calm her down, and her teachers have told us since having it at school her GPA has gone from a 2.0 to a 3.5) two weeks ago. We taped it up and put more screen protectors on it so she wouldn't hurt her fingers on the glass which was shattered but still usable. Last week she put it on her bike to come in and get something, and her youngest sister sat on her bike, effectively shattering the glass the rest of the way and we had to throw it away. I did take this pic of it before we threw it away. I snapchatted the pic as well when it happened. Since she first dropped it, it hadn't been charging like it should. She had had it for a couple years. Hers was a first generation Kindle Fire. She carried it everywhere, and we can't afford a new one for some time. She is devastated, her grades are dropping, and she's getting in trouble at school now because she can't calm down when someone bullies her without it. She has breathing exercises and medication she takes, but her Kindle helped her out tremendously. When we moved here, she started a new school, and her old school never allowed her to bring her Kindle like this school does. Her grades suffered so much, and she always got in trouble. It breaks our hearts to see her heading down that same path at her new school again.
  
  
• Then I have some headphones on another wishlist that are high priority. My girls have been taking mine and essentially breaking them from so much overuse. I can't wear the earbuds, they mess with my ears too much, so I have to have good ol' fashioned headphones.

This is a fun looking game. My 5year old daughter has recently fallen in love with superheroes because of "spiderman and his amazing friends" and a ton of superhero squinkies we have gotten her recently. This seems like a game we could play together.

My current fave however is probably borderlands 2. I have played it waaaay too long with all of the various character choices and all of the DLC that are available.

Mainstream but not mentioned: Gears of War. My friend and I are playing through the triple pack, it's worth it.

Try using Amazon. Gamestop's used prices are atrocious, you are usually looking at $5 in savings. Amazon currently lists it at $50. I bet you paid more at gamestop for an incomplete used copy. With older games they either don't carry new or refuse to drop the price like every other retailer has. Games almost always qualify for free slow shipping, and if you start to use it heavily you can buy amazon prime and get 2-day shipping for everything.

The major publishers have fully embraced online passes, so you should always expect used copies to require an extra $15 for online play.

Gamestop sold that to you knowing it was crippled, they don't care about you as a customer, your loyalty is misplaced.

If I were just playing ODST by myself I wouldn't spend more than $30 on it but it is well worth it for anything less than that. Since Amazon has it for less than $20 I'd say buy it!

It's expensive, but get a copy of Rocksmith and a guitar. Then you can mock the rest of the girl gamers that play their cheapo guitar hero games because your game taught you how to play a real guitar.

Also, chicks that can play the guitar are hot, so then you have that going for you.

It is tough, but fair, and it might just be everything you ever wanted in a game.

A couple things that I think you're missing are that games do get cheaper with age even on the consoles, so they're not always way up there at $60. I can buy a copy of Mass Effect 3 on the console for under $20 right now. I can buy Halo 4, a Triple-A console exclusive from 6 months ago for under $30.

As far as discounts from Steam and other sites, most of those are joint ventures with the publishers that could exist in the console space as well. Valve has come out and said that the Steam Sales are great for profits, and shares that data with publishers to get them on board for more. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo don't control the prices of games, the publishers do, and there's no reason to think that they wouldn't organize sales for their digital distribution platforms as well after seeing it's great for revenue. Sales like that aren't feasible in the brick-and-mortar world of game sales because of the prohibitive nature of organization and promotion. It's nothing comparable to loading up the online store and seeing "25%-75% off Ubisoft Titles this week only!"

There really aren't a large amount of quality wii/wii u games for that price point due to the fact that any first party games will stay at a higher price point thanks to nintendo.

For 360 there are a few different quality games for around that price point. IMO Batman Arkham City GOTY edition is probably the best.

The Walking Dead game! This is seriously a great game that needs to be played by everyone, whether they're a fan of the show or not.

I highly suggest you get The walking dead xbox 360 game because it will help ease the pain of waiting for October to come! Without it, you will get frustrated and sad waiting for the next season of the walking dead to come. It is imperative to your sanity that you buy yourself this game for your birthday... and Happy Birthday!

You should buy yourself the Walking Dead Xbox game. I'm playing the PC version right now and it's so much fun. Also, a great way to get through the withdrawal until the show comes back on.

You should get this. While you have kids, putting time in for yourself is equally important. I can tell you, personally, that this game is very, very fun. There's not a whole lot to it, so it's great if you're tired as well. As a mom, I'd say there's a good chance that's often! It's relaxing, and yet engaging. Well worth the buy, and some time for you!

ODST is a bit of a departure from the other Halo games. It's more open-world (though definitely not like Skyrim or anything) and you feel way more human (NOT like a genetically-modified supersoldier). Some people didn't like it as much, but personally I thought it was fantastic. There's more of a late night, low key vibe to the whole thing. The soundtrack is the best in the entire Halo series. Totally worth the $15, IMO.

Oh, and Firefight is hella fun. If you ever need to fill out your party of four, just shoot me a PM and we'll set it up.

My highest priority is this video game since I will be buying it if no one gifts me. The most practical thing I got with a "high" priority is padded bike shorts

I am not a fan of video games. Never have been, don't think I ever will be. However, my husband is a big fan. He's really obsessed with The Walking Dead, so I have no doubt he'd love The Walking Dead for the xbox 360. His birthday isn't far away, and I think it would be the most amazing surprise. There are two different ones I'm really wanting to play - Minecraft and L.A. Noire. Either one would be AMAZING.

Everyone's been playing minecraft and loving it. I played the demo and it was a ton of fun but didn't give me a chance to really get into building anything. I want to build a CASTLE and try and make some really cool outlying city.

LA Noire - Who doesn't want to be a Detective?? And with the amazing facial animations, that game looks like it would be a shit ton of fun.

Halo ODST and Halo 3 are both under $20.

Both games are fun. Skyrim is fun because the game is more than just the combat. TES games have never had the most stellar combat, but usually you can accomplish your goals in other ways.

Dark Souls is simply...different. It's more like a very well done 3D metroidvania game. I wouldn't put them in direct competition with each other because they of this, not to mention they are 2 of my favorite games this year (Skyrim, Dark Souls, Bastion, Outland, Terraria, and Portal 2 being the ones I've played most). Both have excellent replay value, as I've put over 100 hours into each. I would not recommend trading Skyrim, but I would absolutely recommend trying to get your hands on Dark Souls if you can. I've seen it for around $35-$45 in a lot of places, if you're patient you can easily get it for less than $60 which is what GS is going to charge you most definitely.

If you like stories I personally found that Battlefield Bad Company 1 and 2 were well written though it does include a fair amount of shooting play its a bit more tactical than the straight run and gun-ness of the COD series.

L.A. Noire I've heard amazing things about with the story and gameplay alike, i don't have personal experience with it but its been generally rated high with everyone I've spoken to about it

From what I've heard people say, the best option is to buy the original Rocksmith game that comes with the cable. It's not cheaper but it's nearly the same price as getting the standalone cable. Right now it's $36 on Amazon or if you have an X360/PS3 or even want to sell the game and keep the cable it's currently going for $30 for the X360/PS3 version. The standalone cable is rarely ever sold less than $30, so unless you want to buy it used, purchasing the original Rocksmith is your best option.
Also, if you purchase Rocksmith for PC for another $10 you can purchase the Disc Import Tool from Steam which allows Rocksmith songs to import into Rocksmith 2014. But I would wait until the Winter sale to purchase the Import Tool.

Here's my list of suggestions, why, and links to where to get them. A few are only available on computer, but you'll see which ones:

• Thomas Was Alone (Meta. A cute puzzle game about AIs, and their relationship to the game and developers. It's simple in graphics and big on heart. = computer - itunes - android
  
• The Stanley Parable (another meta game. About the players role in games itself and their relationship to the developers. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is really into games. It's fantastic, hilarious and oddly artsy) = computer -
  
• Telltale's "The Walking Dead" seasons 1 & 2. (These are some of the best games I've played. Point and Click adventure games that everyone loves, even those who don't like point and click games. They are extremely emotional and heart-pounding. I recommend it highly, especially if you want a game that you can watch him play, or vice versa, and really get a fantastic story. Storyline continues based on your decisions in the previous game) = SEASON ONE: computer - PS3 - XBOX360 - PSVITA - iPhone/iPad (first episode free, others are in-game purchases, same with all the mobile games) - Android === SEASON 2: computer - PS3 - XBOX360 - iPhone/iPad - Android
  
• To The Moon (sweet looking 16 bit game that is more of an interactive story. It routinely makes people cry because it's so darned sweet. Love is a central theme.) = computer
  
• Borderlands 2 and/or Borderlands the PreSequel (both fun and funny FPS games that you can run coop if you like) = BORDERLANDS 2: computer - XBOX360 - PS3 === BORDERLANDS PRESEQUEL: computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  
• Portal (fun and funny puzzle game - but he MAY have already played this if the Half-Life 2 he got was the full "The Orange Box")
  
• Portal 2 (also fun and funny, but with a coop mode as well) = computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  
• Fallout 3 and/or Fallout: New Vegas (Post apocolypic games that are fun and often funny. They are open world RPGs with FPS playing style, although you can switch to 3rd person. Fallout 3 is more epic, grand and is more metropolitan, and Fallout New Vegas is more like a spaghetti western, intimate, and has better writing/storyline in my opinion) = FALLOUT 3: computer - XBOX360 - PS3 == FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS: computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  
• Mass Effect 1, 2, & 3 (RPG/FPS set the future, in space, where the storyline continues, using your decisions from the previous games) = computer - XBOX360 - PS3
  
• Red Dead Redemption (an open world RPG/FPS that takes pages from both spaghetti westerns and film noir. If you get this, be sure to get the add on called "Undead Nightmare", where you fight Zombies and meet mythical creatures. • A different idea is to actually get him a wireless controller for his phone! If he has an Andriod, I would suggest the Power A Moga Hero Power It's portable, holds the phone, and I just am in love with mine. And because I have an Andriod, I can download ROMs to play older games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time, etc etc. But the controller works with SO many games! If he has an iPhone or iPad, or if you want another option for Android, I would go with the iPega. I don't have one, but it has the highest reviews.
  
  As for if you should give 1 or 2 gifts, I think 2 might be a lot of fun! But it might depend on what the "1st place" person has on their list and what you want to give them! I'd say make the decision based off of what you want to give the main winner! =)

Last year I switched from First Row to Sunday Ticket. I hated the stress of finding a steam, then the stream being awful quality, then the shit feed cutting out or ads popping up at the most critical part of a game.

Crackdown! This game is an absolute blast. Came out a few years ago but I still go back and play it occasionally. It's like GTA and Mercenaries and absolutely off the rails. Go Cops!

My wife and I just got an Xbox One because we needed a new bluray player and figured it would be more worthwhile to get an xbox than just a bluray player.

She wanted games similar in feel to Mario so this Rayman is the closest thing I could find. The Rayman games have always been fun so I imagine this will be fun as well.

My favorite game is Crackdown. It was just such a fun game to play because it had missions but was also a sandbox style game. They placed orbs all throughout the city - hiding them in and around buildings. This was my favorite part of the game because I really enjoy games that have you collect things. As you leveled up your character you could gain power in different areas. This would allow you to be stronger, run faster, jump higher, and etc.

Jeebus, I've been meaning to get in on Arkham City for a while now. It's down to $15 on Amazon, it's probably time. Especially seeing as how I can't motivate myself to play anything else except Dark Souls.

I play other games from time to time (some Borderlands 2, recently) but nothing else has come close to the satisfaction that Dark Souls gives me. The fact that there's a very dedicated community helps out, too.

I don't feel like entering and taking something away from someone else, but I can't help but post in any and all gaming related threads I see.

I've only got two video games on my Amazon Wishlist right now, and out of the two I'll definitely go with Saints Row IV. The series is terrific. It's an alternative to GTA, where insanity is the norm. Do you want to beat a gang member to death with a giant purple dildo? Go for it. Rob a bank by airlifting the vault out of the bank using a helicopter while fighting off the police and SWAT from atop it? You're in luck. Play as Nicolas Cage, Merle Dixon or any other person in existence? Character creation is that good.

I just gave away a copy of Terraria less than two days on here, and gave away two other copies of two days before that (to offline friends) when I purchased the four pack. It's a terrific title. I hope whoever ends up with these games enjoys them. All three are a lot of fun.

you are overlooking a very important detail, and that is physical copies tank in price very quickly while digital copies do not.

Yeah, that's my point. I mean PC is the best situation of the 3 with at least a handful of options (and if you look at Amazon it seems like you can even get it half price). But it still pales in comparison to the hundreds of stores willing to sell you a physical copy. On Xbox and Playstation, Microsoft and Sony are the only game in town. Ergo full game $10 for x hours of content, DLC [also $10] (http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-ca/Product/Minervas-Den/00000000-0000-400c-80cf-000654540861) for much less content.

That is total bullshit.

$90 for three games? So.. I'm paying $30 for Halo CEA, Reach, and 3.

Halo 3 - $13

Halo: Reach - $14

Halo: CEA - $16

In other words, I can get the same thing for a way lower price.

It's out for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and will come out for PC in October.

I go to some local jams to practice and have been doing "three notes per string" scales to increase my speed and muscle memory.

I've found that the biggest failing being a bedroom guitar player is boredom...a two hour jam goes by in a flash...but it's hard to do scales for more than 10 minutes without getting distracted. Playing with and for other people keeps your interest up (that is why the game might be interesting, you can jump right into songs rather than having to do a bunch non-musical exercises).

That many free games for as long as I have PS+ is more than fair to me.

And there are new free games every month. I'm just trying to put this into perspective. You can download games off tbp which is cheaper and better I suppose, but apart from that there aren't many services that offer that many free games for a reasonable subscription fee. You also get cloud services like automatic update, movie & game downloads and cloud storage. Early access to beta content, a lot of discounts and other free media. And it's cheaper than Xbox live.

Don't get me wrong. It's good that Microsoft are finally trying to make the xbox live seem like it's worth the price. And Crackdown is a good game. And it's only 10$ on Amazon.
