The Switch pro controller's D pad is shit and the joy cons don't have a real D pad, this is one of the best alternatives for a game where D pad use is optimal.

I'd advise against getting the Hori left joycon, as it has many major drawbacks compared to a Nintendo one, namely

• it has no internal battery, so it's handheld mode only
  
• It constantly drains the Switch's battery while it's connected, something like 5% every 15 minutes even in sleep mode if it's anything like the JP and review units this was fixed apparently.
  
• No gyros, so while some games may still have motion control aiming with it using data from just the right joycon, many will not work at all.
  
  If you want a good dpad on the Switch, I'd recommend an 8bitdo controller like one of these, I have this exact one and it works great. It even pairs with 4 different devices, 1 per input mode, so I have it paired to my NES classic, Switch, and PC all at once and can pick which to connect to with a different button combo on startup.

Edit: then again, a PS4 controller would work even better since it's easier to hold with something top-heavy attached, and phone docks have existed for those for forever.

I use the SN30 Pro from 8bitdo but the newer SN30 Pro+ came out just recently and will probably be more comfortable to hold with the hand grips added.

They pair to the switch instantly and show up as a Pro Controller.

The upcoming NESpro and SNESpro 8bitdo controllers will have rumble and gyro

I dont think there are any other third party controllers with rumble at the moment.

Oh okay. I would look into the 8bitdo snes controller then. Its specifically being made with the switch in mind, and costs considerably less than the pro controller. It also is fairly small and slim which is great for portability.

Super Mario World - This was my first game and remains one of my all-time favorites. It's been a few years since my last play-through, so it's been exciting to return to Dinosaur Land. Playing it with my SN30 Pro only adds to the nostalgia.

Ratchet & Clank (2016) - I'm continuing to play this at a pretty casual place and it's always really fun. I devoured the original games as a kid, blowing through them in as little as a couple of days, but the levels are also really nicely scoped so that you can clear the available content on a planet in a 30-60 minute session, then have a new place to explore when you come back.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - I haven't made much progress on this lately (haven't been in the mood for psychological horror this week), but I'm determined to come back soon to finish the story while it remains fresh in my mind. Additional thought: collectable snippets or Norse mythology work nicely as a narrative detour at times when the main story is a bit slower.

This is the one I have. I did wear out the left joystick, because I played a lot of Zelda BOTW on it. It syncs up almost effortlessly to any device with Bluetooth. There is also an adapter thingy that can mount your phone on top of the controller. It is a pretty wonderful little device.

Power A just launched a wireless option but you don't save that much.

They're wired, so if that's a dealbreaker for you, you need to spend up. I have a wireless Pro controller as well and I think I got robbed.

I bought the NES30 Pro and I love it. To use it on your SNES Classic I believe you'll need this dongle.

I like the 8bitdo ones. They look and feel like original nintendo controllers but with wireless. I got the SNES one with joysticks.

Yup. Even the famously apologetic Switch community acknowledges the D-Pad shipped with all variants of the Pro Controller (e.g., vanilla, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2) to be fundamentally broken. Pressing either the left or right directions on the D-Pad commonly mis-registers as an up direction. (Woops.)

What appears to differ between Switch consumers is their subjective tolerance for this critical defect. Many gamers believe their Pro Controller D-Pad to be defect-free after successfully running through Celeste and Puyo Puyo Tetris, only to find via the System Settings->Controllers and Sensors->Test Input Devices->Test Controller Buttons calibration menu that, in fact, their D-Pad is equally defective.

The Pro Controller D-Pad is absolutely the worst D-Pad that Nintendo has produced – and possibly worse even than the XBox 360 D-Pad, previously regarded as the worst first-party D-Pad ever manufactured. What makes this all the more dispiriting is that (presumably to limit legal and fiscal liability) Nintendo has refused to:

• Acknowledge the widespread existence of this defect.
  
• Release a controller revision that resolves this defect. It should be noted that the "tape fix" does not reliably resolve this defect for many users. (It does, however, reliably void the warranty.)
  
  Instead, I highly recommend investing in a third-party controller known to ship with a functional D-Pad. The 8Bitdo SN30 Pro is probably the highest-rated Switch peripheral for this purpose.
  
  In any case, thanks for the awesomely balanced writeup! Due to difficulty spikes and copious backtracking, Hollow Knight isn't for everyone. Just ran into this conundrum myself. Bought a SNES Classic and wanted to get a wireless controller for it: This one to be exact. Unfortunately it was lag-tacular, (probably a 1/4 second delay, but enough to be irritating on platformers like MegaMan X and Super Metroid).

Returned it, and picked up this and this instead. The difference is night and day, and the controls are super snappy and responsive. Picked up the regular SNES adapter version as well and it works like a charm too.

If you want a controller that feels like the SNES controller but want full functionality, I suggest 8bitdo

I was about to link this as well - 100% guaranteed to be better than what Nintendo is selling. It’s the only controller I use these days.

EDIT: I should note that the version I have is the SF30 Pro because I prefer the more classic SNES controller feel but also the look of the Super Famicom colorful controller buttons over the dull medicinal purple colors of the SN30 Pro that looks more like a classic SNES controller.

The downside is that it's not a licensed third party controller, so system updates occasionally break compatibility...but OTOH, they're great about providing quick patches.

Just checked and that $79.99 kit comes w/ a 32 GB Micro SD. This would be a complete package for you system-wise. Like someone else said, you need a controller. You can take advantage of the on-board bluetooth capability get a wireles controller set up with something like the SN30 Pro by 8bitdo.

After getting the ROM situation sorted (the Pi 3B+ also has wi-fi, so you could easily set up SMB shares via menus and transfer your ROMs that way) you could look into replacing the case you got with something a bit more period appropriate like a Super Tinytendo Case for a few bucks.

I think the whole mini SNES motif would be cool for your son to enjoy and really get a feel for the period at the time! Plenty of other options out there in terms of customization and controllers also, so you can do as you like.

Ya I'm wondering if it might just be better to return it. I re-paired the device and it seems to disconnect constantly, even if it's just a second it takes a few more to reconnect and then I'm just standing there while the koopas run me over and I die. 8bitdo SF30 Pro controller. I have one and love it. It has 4 shoulder buttons, clickable joystick buttons, vibration, and tilt support.

They also have the Super Nintendo version with the pueple buttons and concave X and Y

Both of these models were the first controllers I bought from 8bitdo. They both work great, though I did have to do the tape fix in order to make the D-pad do diagonal directions properly. (Pretty much all 8bitdo controllers do this. I had to do it to my SN30 controllers as well.)

I'm still waiting for the SN30 Pro+ to come out, but their website says that was supposed to release over five months ago. Instead of waiting for newer models, I say just find what looks good to you and buy now.

Really depends on whether you need gyro controls and/or HD rumble. If you need either of those i would suggest just sticking to the joy-cons in the grip and save up for the pro controller. Otherwise, there are great wired options out there. Most notably the controllers from PowerA and HORI. Also personally I think the PowerA controller looks better than the pro controller but that's just my opinion.

If you play a lot of 2D games I'd recommend this controller. Probably the best 2D controller for the switch and has thumbsticks for 3D games.

I use a PS3 controller for literally everything. It's not a particular preference, but it's got a solid d-pad, I already own it (two of them actually), and I'm too lazy and cheap to bother changing it out for something else.

If the PS3 pads ever conk out I'll probably pick up some SN30s.

There's actually some nice BT SN controllers and a new one coming out soon for the Switch/PC/Android, supposedly they are very high quality. I am on the fence about it vs a switch pro controller which is also very high quality.

Horipad is a decent cheap option. It does lack things compared to the Pro Controller. It's wired, doesn't have rumble, motion controls or an Amiibo scanner. But it does get you a full sized gamepad in your hands for ~$20.

8Bitdo SN30 Pro Controller is pretty nice at $50. Downsides are that it lacks the Amiibo scanner, the Home button won't turn on the console, and it requires a firmware update before you can use it. The upsides are motion controls, rumble, and what is probably the best D-Pad you can get anywhere, Switch or elsewhere. SNES styling might be a bonus too depending on your tastes.

The Pro Controller itself is also on sale for $50 right now, if you have the cash on hand to buy it before it goes back to $70.

I jusr got a controller and its my fav controller. Its the 8bitdo SNES controller with ps4 mixed with xboxish sticks. Its super well built has motion controls, vibration (not hd vibration) and i love it . It also works for android , ios. Pc. Battery has lasted a while too. They also made or are making a more ergonomic one that looks more like a modern controller

I really like this company and brand they make great quality products with a pivioted dpad so its smooth and feels like a real snes controller, its nostalgic for me so thats a part of it . I got it cause the pro issues (still a good controller, but dpad was bad) i was having and gave my pro to my buddy who was going to buy one but i was feeling charitable

If anyone is curious, that's a SF30 Pro. One of the top of the line eumlator controllers. It costs about $50 but it's one of the best out there in terms of comfort and low latency, also interestingly enough it can detect motion controls so you can use it to play on a Nintendo Switch.

I thought about getting it for a long time, but then realized I don't game as much as I used to. If I were to jump back into it though I would totally be getting this one.
