Amazon has a ton of awesome stuff for kids for pretty cheap. Anybody who only has ~$5-$10 to give should take a look at this list and organize helping someone in need from this thread. The castle playset is listed on Amazon and has a couple more pictures, including a better look at Bowser and the inside of the castle.
For the girl, Littlest Pet Shop toys are adorable. There are all kinds of sets and animals, and they range from a small set for around $10, to more intricate sets with all kinds of houses/cars with multiple lil animals.
The best bit is that they are trendy and so darn cute, but not any kind of skimpily dressed bratz doll.
And, all else fails, legos. Legos for one and all.

If you've never wargamed before I would suggest getting a bucket of toy soldiers and proxy the hell out of them. Get a feel for the rules and what you like and don't like, then start buying figures.

One of my favorite battles was between me and another Ork player who played Necrons for practice. His army consisted of poker chips, toy soldiers and a vanilla Yankee Candle (monolith of course). We still had a blast.
EDIT - Okay, the Battle of Vedros set is way cheaper than I was expecting - that would also be a fine starting option.
