Welp, BBB W1D1 in the books. Those 50% 5x10s are surprisingly shitty. Also did some good mornings for the first time in forever. My workout felt amazingly shitty.

Edit: Anyone have any recommendations for a scale? I'm trying to dial-in my BW and drop some pounds. I've had this one in my cart for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger. Thanks

u/mrswaka · 10 pointsr/TryingForABaby

Hey girly!

I definitely use OPKs, but only really found them useful after I had an idea of when I ovulated, which I figured out through charting. *A note on charting: The first months are very hellish. You'll drive yourself nuts if you try to analyze it all, so I'd recommend starting it when life is kind of slow!

I use these OPKs because they came in a combo pack with HPTs and they've been really reliable. I use this thermometer because I like that it beeps when it's getting the temp (note on BBTs, they take about one full minute to get an accurate temp, so you do have to be a bit patient with them!) and it also has a backlight. I temp vaginally because I want to get the most accurate readings, so the beeping does not bother my husband since it's all under the sheets. Definitely start temping CD1 of your period and make sure you're getting the temp right when you wake up (I have an alarm set for 6:30am because I will never be awake on my own then!)

I wouldn't worry about supplements until you have at least three months of charting under your belt. No need to throw everything off...just see how your body works naturally.

This book is the fertility bible to most women and has a lot of helpful information. For charting, FertilityFriend is a great place to start and also has a handy dandy mobile app. You can also poke around in /r/TFABChartStalkers for charting help once you start.

If you can hold out...try to not test before your period is due. Trust me, squinters on pregnancy tests are NIGHTMARES to cope with, totally not worth it, and are avoidable. I wish someone had told me this when I started TTC because it would have saved me a lot of heartache.

I hope you find the support you need here and please feel free to PM me with any questions that you come up with! I've been around the block a few times and can definitely help out :)

I bought this little guy on Amazon after I noticed my heart beating fast in the morning, especially when I got up to pee.

I use this $24 scale that automatically connects to my phone via bluetooth when I step on it and automatically inputs my weight and a number of "body composition" measurements. If you're not in the app when you do it, it will store the data and sync it the next time you step on it with the app open. I've had it over a year, replaced the batteries once and never had a problem with it. I actually can't believe it does all that for the price.

I have this easy@home one that connects via bluetooth and the soft beep is pretty nice, it has temp recall, and it connects to an app.

u/pretzel · 5 pointsr/startbodyweight

Great idea. Would do one myself if I had the time!

Were I to do it for myself, I'd:

  • Have all the exercises in the list, but also allow for users to add in their own exercises (I have problems going from pushups to elbows-in/diamonds so am doing an extra "close" push up, to help get me there)
  • Allow me to level up by 1 rep (or 2 reps on pushup/dips!) or allow me to repeat if I'm cheating too much
  • When I do my workout I always have a stopwatch on besides me so I know how long a gap I am having between sets. It would be great if I could be in workout mode and it tells me what I should be doing in my next set, and then how long I should be waiting for. I guess I'd want to tap that I'm starting and that I've finished. Might be nice if it how long an exercise took so if everything was in sync I could do it completely hands free (at the moment when I am done I try to remember when I finished so I can wait a minute, but sometimes after a particularly hard set I forget!)
  • Other ideas with workout mode:
    • I want to be able to override the gap between sets (Some are ok for a minute, sometimes I need a bit longer...)
    • I want to be able to handle exercises that need to be done on each leg (eg: single leg squats, I do my left side then my right side or vice versa - same with side planks)
    • Need to be able to pause if I get a phone call.
    • Handle my warmups for me as well!
    • Allow me to input my weight/BMI/water %/fat % (I have one of these)
    • Allow me to split up my routine (I do push [squat/pike pushups/pushups/dips] one day/pull [the rest] the next so I can workout everyday for 30 minutes instead of everyother day)
    • Sometimes I skip a stretch or do it shorter so let me move on (also note some stretches are both arms, some are single arm)

Good luck and any other qns or if you want me to play with it latter on feel free to PM me!

I bought this Weight Guru scale from Amazon. So far it's pretty nice. Looks good, feels sturdy. And it has an app that can read an image from the scale (through your camera) that can keep track of your weigh-ins.

u/mox1979 · 4 pointsr/1200isplenty

What I find interesting is that there are numerous brands that seem almost identical on Amazon. The apps are even the same.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01NALRONX

I personally can't stand the graph in the app, so I sync the app with a fitbit account even though I don't have a fitbit. The Fitbit account in turn can sync with trendweight.com. So automatic data entry at TrendWeight without having to spend $130 on a scale.

And I would recommend not paying attention to any of the additional data that is provided by the scale. Weight is consistent and accurate, but even the formula used for BMI seems slightly off, not to mention that there's zero chance that any of the many other data points are accurate and it would be unrealistic to expect them to be.

u/GetOffMyLawn_ · 4 pointsr/ClotSurvivors

your issue isn't clotting, it's OCD and anxiety, and I don't know that we're the right people to help you with that. We can give you all the reassurances in the world but your OCD/anxiety will say "yeah but what about...". Have you tried posting in r/OCD or r/anxiety?

If you're not on hormonal birth control now and you don't have any genetic factors and you don't have other risk factors (as listed on the sidebar) you're unlikely to clot. your doctor felt you were well enough to come off anticoagulants.

you know what the symptoms of a PE are, and you know what they aren't. you remember what symptoms you experienced when you got your PE, that's what you need to watch for. you know that finger pain is not a symptom of a clot so remind yourself of that in a positive reassuring way. Remind yourself that you are okay, you are safe, and you know how to get help if anything does happen.

What some folks do is they get an inexpensive pulseox device to monitor their blood oxygen and reassure themselves they are getting enough oxygen.

At this point you probably have some PtSD from your experience and your therapist is the best person to help you work thru that along with your other anxiety disorders.

I do box breathing for anxiety, it can help with mild to moderate anxiety, I don't know if it helps panic. you might also benefit from a mind-body practice like yoga or t'ai chi or qigong. they are not a quick fix, it's something you have to practice regularly.

For what it's worth I have anxiety disorder as well, been dealing with it off and on most of my life. I do know it has a life of its own and does what it wants, logic be damned. I did a lot of medication, a lot of therapy, and do a lot of yoga and meditation. It still rears its ugly head now and again.

u/grooviegurl · 4 pointsr/nursing

A CNA probably doesn't need a stethoscope. Most places use electronic blood pressure cuffs to monitor that stuff and a CNA never listens to lungs or heart sounds anyway. She would definitely use a pulse oximeter every day though, and those things disappear like no body's business.

u/lord_tommy · 4 pointsr/ems

Eh, my work is pretty cheap and bought a ton of $20 ones to give to us… that way if we lose it we have to pay to replace in the future… they work pretty well, actually. They take a bit longer if the patient keeps flicking their finger or moving it up and down to try and look at it themselves.

http://www.amazon.com/50-DL-Pulse-Oximeter-Neck-Wrist/dp/B004BJT9OE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420650946&sr=8-1&keywords=pulse+ox

that what we use… comes with a nifty little pouch, two separate lanyards for the device and the pouch, a loop on the pouch to attach to your belt (my favorite) or wherever.. and the display has little bars to show the strength of the pulse by pulsing up and down. about the same quality as the $60 ones I see RNs use.

u/whiskeyandredwine · 4 pointsr/loseit

If by doctor's scale you mean something like this, then yes. They are very accurate.

Let's just say I would trust the scale in a doctor's office over my bathroom scale any day. Think about it. You question the accuracy of the doctor's scale but how often do you calibrate your bathroom scale? If you're like me then probably never. That said, if you do want to calibrate your own scale it's quite easy. Use weight lifting plates (at least 25 lbs but 50lbs would be better). If you don't have those then use water. 6 US gallons of water ~ 50 lbs.

u/Paulingtons · 4 pointsr/loseit

Something like this will do the job just fine. I personally use a Withings scale that is an investment but the app makes it worth it in my opinion.

EDIT: I should wear stronger glasses.

u/cooking_question · 4 pointsr/xxketo
u/taielynn · 4 pointsr/TryingForABaby

I have been loyal to the easy@home brand myself. Never had any issues. Others may have different opinions.

I have a box of 50 pregnancy tests, I havent used them because getting a negative sends me overboard currently. When I finally have a moth that I hit my window square I will try it - but until then..

Here's some links:
Thermometer I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0764LHSNM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Opks: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F3IH58Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_6VRroiyrDBvYd

The thermometer attaches to the Premom app, and although I dont prefer it - it picks up the bluetooth temps and you can take pics of your opks and the app will tell you if its positive or not, and keeps a picture log.

I recently bought a home blood pressure machine (this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KW4PO82/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and have been taking my blood pressure first thing every morning. Additionally, i have been keeping a recovery log (i.e. intangible aspects of lifting such as rate of fatigue, motivation levels, quality of sleep, etc.). Its been interesting to see fatigue from a quantifiable perspective. When I see spikes in blood pressure and resting heart rate and look at how i felt lifting that day, they are strongly correlated. I find it useflul to know if you have a monster day coming up, you can gauge how fatigued your body is from the BP/Heart Rate for that morning.

Welp, I have been using my old sturdy and what I thought to be reliable analog scale to track my weight for the past few years but last week got a hankering to get a smart scale to track my body fat and bmi so I ordered this scale. It arrived yesterday and I just used it for the first time. If this scale is accurate, my analog scale was weighing me in significantly less. So I am up 6lbs since yesterday. At least I know where I'm really at now, in bright blue digital numbers...

30 bucks and it blue tooth connects to your phone... so you can literally temp and go back to sleep. I could do it with my eye mask on and then later in the day can look at the app to evaluate the data... along with OPKs.

By doing both temping and OPKs I was able to determine that I have a short luteal phase (technically called luteal phase defect) After experiencing chemical pregnancies my OB was able to agree with my data and put me on progesterone after I would ovulate .... first cycle on the progesterone and I’m currently 9 months pregnant.

I highly recommend adding in temping :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_fat_percentage

You can read about various methods used to determine body fat.

My opinion, for a person whos goal is to try and lose weight and track their progress, as opposed to a person who is a doctor or medical researcher or practitioner and needs accurate readings, is that the simplest no hassle method is the best.

As a person trying to lose weight, it doesn't matter if any 1 single reading is accurate to within 0.1% or not, or whether the readings fluctuate based on your current state of hydration, rather, what truly matters, is the average trend over time .... ie the average rate at which you are losing body fat.

This leads me to recommend buying a scale like this one ( note thats a random inexpensive model i found with a search, not endorsing that specific units quality ) that makes it super easy to check ones weight, and body fat percentage, and log it to an app on ones cell phone or PC.

Good luck on your goals.

How scary! I'm so glad you are here. I had my PE a little over a year ago. Massive bilateral, no known cause (maybe birth control). I don't know what the future holds, so I can't tell you that the worst is over, but I can say that you are getting treatment, so bad things are very unlikely to happen right now. I'm guessing that your doctor will have you on anticoagulants for life. That can be both good and bad. Coping is hard. Research about clotting helps me a lot. Contributing to this board helps. You have every right to be scared. Fear is normal, especially at first. You have gone through something terrible. Trust me when I say that I really do understand. You may want to look into getting yourself a pulse ox for those times that you are afraid. you can check to see that your oxygen is ok. That you are really breathing. I know that has helped me. You may also want to look into genetic testing for your children. If they are factor V also, it would be good to know early. Your daughter is likely at least heterozygous (a carrier).

Did your doctors find any clots in your legs? Were you sick at all before this? You really will be ok. You have a loving family to support you through this. You will get better. Feel free to ask us any questions or make any comments you need to!

u/vote100binary · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Sorry I didn't include a price -- I paid around $175 for mine, but obviously the price has gone up. Looks like around $250 now.

I found this health-o-meter scale at amazon which is of similar design for just $158, but I haven't personally used it.

Yes -- cheaper mechanical spring scales, or electrical load-cell based scales may work fine for a long time -- but I'm a fan of precision... you can't beat the accuracy/repeatability of a beam scale.

Maybe not for everyone, but BI4L nonetheless.

u/redson · 3 pointsr/keto

Escali BFBW200. Remembers multiple profiles, pretty intuitive, and has been accurate compared to when I go to the doctor.

I should admit that I've got a Withings scale on my xmas wishlist.

u/deletedLink · 3 pointsr/steroids

Get yourself one of these, or similar.

Monitor that shit every morning before you take your coffee or gear or whatever.

Your BP can, most definitely, affect your vision if it gets too high. And if it is affecting your vision, it's way too high and you need to see a doc.

Go and give blood today.

>If I was you I'd just buy some Withings scales

Just looked up the one I have - yup it's a Withings. Works great, syncs with my Garmin and Strava apps (compatible with lots of different health apps), can do multiple people, and it's $60. If OP just likes DIY, knock yourself out, but considering there's a product on the market likely as cheap as you could DIY, why not put your time into other projects.

Edit: here's one for $25 that has over 11k ratings.

u/motleybandit · 3 pointsr/loseit

Wait, so how does this work? It weeds out the fake positive reviews to show you the number of real positive/negative reviews? That's interesting. The scale I have is apparently an F, but I love it. It always seems consistent with what my doctor weighs me as, so I'm fine with how accurate it is.

Although now that I look through the reviews, I do see a number of people saying that when they step on it three or four times, they get a number of different readings. They also say the WiFi connection is wonky. I've never had either of these issues. This is the scale I have if anyone is curious.

Anyhow, thanks for sharing! :)

The most consistent scales are the doctor's office style balance scales like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Healthometer-402KL-Physician-Scale-Height/dp/B0009MFUZY

One nice thing about this type of scale is that you can leave the slider at your previous weight. As soon as you step on, you'll know if you gained or lost without having to adjust the slider since the indicator arm will tilt up or down (or stay the same if your weight hasn't changed).

These are much pricier than the spring or strain gauge scales, but more accurate and more consistent.

For digital bathroom scales, I've found that this one matches my balance scale results fairly well:

http://www.amazon.com/Eatsmart-Precision-Bathroom-Technology-440-Pounds/dp/B0032TNPOE

Bonus is that it handles up to 440 pounds.

What I started with: Stethoscope, sphygmomanometer or a sphygmomanometer for the lazy, pulse oximeter, reflex hammer, tuning fork, a pen light, notebook, Maxwell, pocket medicine, clipboard, 48 pens (of which I somehow only have 2 left), and finally a pack of decoy pens to hand out to people that need to "borrow" a pen but never give back.

Seriously where do all of my pens go??? It turns out half them went into my gf's bag x(.

What I was given or picked up along the way: scalpel, needle drivers, tweezers, scissors, various types of vicryl, bandages, gauze, alcohol wipes, surgical lube (that I took from the hospital when no one was looking ;) ), and a pocket CPR mask. I took a bunch of normal saline and IV kits as well but they don't fit in the bag.

this is highest on my list because I need it to help my husband and I to concieve a child together. I have PCOS which unfortunantly has left me infertile without the help of fertility drugs. I have 2 step children who I adore, but we would love to create a life together.
This is second on my list because I need to help me to lose weight so that I can possibly cure myself of PCOS (it's been done before).
This is 3rd on my list because it is for work and up there in importance.
And last but not least This I need due to the PCOS making my hair fall out. It creates high levels of testosterone which makes the hair go bye-bye. I have some bald spots I cover with my own hair.

Sorry if it sounds like a sob story lol But, these are the things I feel are a priority. Creating life, work, and fixing some problems with myself :) Thanks for the contest, you are VERY generous. <3 Sort my priorities :)

Alcohol wipes

Just put it in

No, though I only started temping on CD5 of each cycle because by then I have a light flow. It's a personal preference if you want to temp through your period or not.

Yes. The thermometer I have beeps while it's taking your temp and then it beeps 4 times when it's done.

If it's a BBT thermometer, you can use it vaginally.

On one of my cycles, I switched mid cycle to vaginal temping (right before I O'd too). All I did was make daily notes that it was a vaginal temp.

Remember, the individual data isn't really important. It's your chart as a whole. You may find that your temps are a lot more consistent with vaginal temping as less factors affect vaginal temps vs oral temps.

This is what I use.

This is a similar version.

u/HallowTree · 3 pointsr/TryingForABaby

I started off with just the ovulation strips but I decided to try temping too after a few unsuccessful cycles. I live in a small town and didn't check my local stores for this reason but I ordered this thermometer off of amazon and so far I love it! I love that it has a recall function so I can just pass back out after I hear it beep and then record the temp when I wake up for real.

> Sorry if this is a mundane question but the sub for NFP barely has any people. I am seriously confused and overwhelmed by all the options for thermometers.

We use this one. Make sure you buy two. Mark one as the base and the other with the offset. For example, If the base reads 98.6 and the other reads 98.8, mark the other as being +0.2 so if the first one gets lost or stops working, you can continue to measure with the second one and correct to match what the other would read.

> I am thinking of sympto-thermal method and it requires measuring temperature (preferably in the vagina) and I don't know which thermo to get.

I don't know anyone who does that. Internal temperature is internal temperature. We always take temperature orally.

I'm currently looking at this Innotech scale: https://www.amazon.com/Innotech-Digital-Bathroom-Scale-Backlit/product-reviews/B01MFBUSEB/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews&sortBy=recent

It has 670 reviews, of which 95% are 4 or 5 stars (90% at 5 stars). It seems that the people who have problems are taken care of by customer service. The only real trouble I see with it is someone mentioned that if you step on it over and over again, it won't show a weight change if your weight has changed less than 3/4 of a pound. While to some extent I could see that being nice for my mental health, I also see myself being skeptical of it.

I have mixed feelings about Eat Smart scales, which are usually under $20. Their kitchen scale has been fine but this isn't the first time I've had problems with their bathroom scale. A few months into owning it, it had this problem. I called customer service, we troubleshooted it, it was broken and they sent me a new one. This was several years (3+) ago and it's been good until now. I'm halfway considering buying another because $20 for 3 or more years isn't bad, IMO.

You can even set it up so it tells you how many lbs' you lost instead of your actual weight.

2. I’m assuming that you mean this one? Backlit ones are very useful.

3. Were you recently on hormonal birth control? I think once you start temping the random EWCM will be easier to interpret. It comes when estrogen (secreted by developing follicles) levels rise and can also spike again midway through your luteal phase.

u/Un_impressed · 2 pointsr/funny

That's what I was thinking. I mean, >300 for cardiac monitoring? I could probably buy my own EKG machine (ok, well, it's for kids) for that price.

Also, you could literally buy two pulse oximeters for that price and still have change for a cheeseburger. I know, I have one.

I was in a position to be looking for these a while back.

Avoid the watches that measure from your wrist - they are not reliable. Use one that relies on a chest strap. Here is one that I use and LOVE. The battery on the watch lasts for friggin' ever, and the strap is rather comfortable as far as these things typically go. You an also download the data to get an accurate idea of how your heartrate fluctuates.

Alternatively, just get one of these, if you aren't moving your finger too much or just want to check intermittently. It gives you info not only on heartrate, but on blood oxygen level, which may give you a better idea of when you are close to fainting.

(I admit that I just read the TL;DR)

Automatic cuffs are nearly always inaccurate for me, especially when my blood pressure is misbehaving. I switched to a manual cuff made to be used on yourself; the stethoscope is sewn into place on the cuff to aid in one handed use. I had no clue how to take blood pressure when I purchased it, and was a little intimidated at the thought of learning how. However, as it turns out, it is simple!

Omron Adult Home Blood Pressure Kit

I figured out my automatic cuff was giving me inaccurate readings when I took it with me to the doctor to check it against their manual cuff. Prior to that, I had no clue! The systolic measurement was off by 10 or more each of the 3 times we checked it. My cardiologist said automatic cuffs are inaccurate for a decent sized chunk of the normal population - by far not enough where they are useless, but enough where it is worthwhile to check if they provide you with the same reading as someone gets manually at a doctor's office.

I use a pulse ox for my pulse.

You can eat, what you can eat. That said, as you lose weight, your reflux may improve.

If you are having trouble working out what to eat, just start with what you already eat, but control the quantities with calorie counting. You will want to do a few initial days of just counting what your current intake level is, so you can slowly lower your intake.

The easiest way to generate meals is to start with some good lean protein, then add some vegetables to that, and some flavouring, but don't forget that sauces count as calories!

Frozen food has the useful benefit of having very detailed nutritional information on the side of the box, and snap frozen vegetables have high nutrient value.

> How do you guys go about snacks? I usually eat something, be it some chips or something microwavable every few hours.

Chips are generally not great, but if you need them, count their calories into your budget. There's definitely a range of microwave foods out there with decent nutritional value (good amount of protein and essential fats).

> Also, what do you do at night when you're trying to sleep but it feels like you're starving?

When you get your eating right, this may be less of a problem. The right balance of proteins and fat help with satiety, whereas not having enough of those in your dinner meal may leave you hungry as you go to sleep.

> it says that I should consume no more than 2290 calories a day. I've used other calculators online though and have seen anything from 2600-2900 calories a day.

You probably have relatively little muscle mass because of your issues with your flatfeet. The main determinant of how many calories you should have is muscle mass. (%bodyfat measurements will let you determine this far more accurately though).

2300 calories per day is probably a good eventual target. However, first you need to measure how much you are currently eating, then work down from there.

> a bit of weight training.

I would suggest with working towards bodyweight squats and lunges. You may or may not be able to do a full movement with your current size, but a few partial squats are safe and will start conditioning your knees and muscles.

Also, try to get your hands on some cheap dumbbells and learning what movements you can do at home. You don't need the gym to lift weight!

Overall it sounds like you have a good attitude and an openness to learning. With patience, time and the right feedback, you can definitely achieve not only your temporary goals, but more than you thought possible!

Essential Tremors are common, and run in families. Totally different part of the brain, and doesn't effect activities. My grandmother and mom both had ET, but not Parkinson's.

Sleeping is something she should tell her Doctor about.

My MDS (movement disorder specialist) had me see a sleep disorder specialist due to my lack of sleep. Ended up doing two sleep studies, Sleep Specialist (A Neurologist who specializes in Sleep Disorder... so additional years of medical school) commented 99/100 of the clients he just see's Apnea issues. I was the 1 in 100 who has brain issues, including central apnea when I just stop breathing for a while. They monitor your oxygen levels to also help see what is going on. I have a fancy little CPAP machine to help me keep breathing at night. Going from three hours of sleep to five hours is a huge difference how I feel.

Pulse Oximeter. For $20 everyone should have one. Super simple to slide of someones finger at night and get a reading. Oh, first one I got was bad... inconsistent readings, returned it, next worked fine. Take it to your Doctor's Office and compare with their fancy machine. If Mom is reading below 93 when napping/sleeping.... keep a written log and bring it to her next Doctor's appts.

I hated my CPAP the first month, but later realized I didn't have those headaches when I woke up. :)

Wow, that is disconcerting. Obesity is a disease of many causes, and keto mostly addresses the metabolic/dietary cause of excess glucose & insulin. Ever thought about getting your thyroid levels checked? You may want to consider getting a BIA device; that way if you are losing fat and gaining muscle, you may have a better chance of noticing it and keeping up with your plan.

Some more in-depth exploration of the science of obesity may be in order. This video is long, but you may find it highly interesting. Pay attention to the part about caloric intake, delta E, compensatory behavior, and so forth. This is the main reason I don't believe in calorie restriction.

Few explanations combined maybe:

(1) You sweat in the shower. You breath out a bit of water. This is probably the biggest difference. Also, you are a bigger guy, so you likely sweat more than others. Was it a long shower (>10 minutes)? That would give you more time to sweat off more water.

(2) Scale affected by temp, humidity, slight movement between calibrations could result in variation.

(3) You shaved or brushed your teeth in the shower ... spit out water and removed hair maybe worth a few oz.

(4) You cleaned off dead skin cells and other stuff ... a couple oz?

(5) Your scale may vary your weight based on how you stand on it ... too much weight in the heel may be recoded lower (or higher) than evenly divided weight. You could experiment.

I've had very consistent results with the Omron HBF-400 (in terms of weight, the body fat % check is less accurate though it is also consistent), but it has a 330 lbs limit.

u/HopNine · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

Cool site! I seem to fluctate between 17-22% BF. Measurements come from a Omron HBF-400 scale.

BF measurements can vary wildly between different products. The best advice is to pick one method and stick with it. The individual numbers by themselves don't really matter - you are comparing the numbers against themselves over time to identify trends. (If it wasn't obvious my day job involves data analyst stuff. :-P)

We purchased a Withings smart scale and it fueled me to lose 40lbs in 2016! Weighing myself daily and seeing the slow progression downward allowed me to visualize my slow weight loss. It worked! Their app is wonderful, super easy to use, and let's you track temperature and C02 emissions. We got it on sale for $99 and it was worth every penny. I got the Withings Active Pop watch to track sleep and steps about 6 months ago. Paired with the scale, this system works for me.

It's a Garmin Index Smart Scale. I like how fast and accurate it is--it's way better than other electronic scales I have tried--but I also recognize that it is more expensive than the competition while providing fewer features. I often see the Withings scale be recommended as an alternative.

I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3 so I like that the scale is Garmin too; it puts all my data into one place.

> Oh and has anyone used Nokia's Body+ scale? It sounds pretty cool but like all techy stuff it costs a pretty penny...!

I have no experience with the Nokia but it seems kind of mediocre for the price, I own this basic one while my parents own this one but if you want features I don't think you could go wrong with:

u/jminuse · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

I got a fat monitoring scale (this one) and, while I'm sure it's not accurate on an absolute scale, it's consistent. I can watch my body fat increase if I don't work out for a while and then go down after I pick up cardio again.

This relies on you measuring when you're at the same level of hydration each time, though.

u/Ephemeral_Halcyon · 2 pointsr/AskDocs

This one is super highly rated. Lots of great features. Omron over all is great, if you want an upper arm cuff instead.

u/The_Grid_Is_Up · 2 pointsr/Stims

A home blood pressure cuff like this one which is highly rated will allow you to check it at home.

As far as warnings go, since high blood pressure is largely symptomless it gets a little tricky. One thing I've personally noticed is that my ears will periodically get that high pitched ring that cuts out sound for a second when my pressure is high. That's not to say it would happen to you.

One way to tell with nearly 100% accuracy is to check the visual status of your vasoconstriction, and see how your heart is beating. If your hands are cold and purple, and your heart is beating at a relatively normal pace, but each beat SLAMS then your blood pressure is high. Not necessarily dangerously so, but definitely high.

Stims with a nasty reputation for vasoconstriction (like the seductive but malevolent Alpha-PVP) are risky. PVP was the reason for my 170.

u/davedawg2000 · 2 pointsr/loseit

I have this particular model. The weight readings are very consistent, as are the BF% readings. In terms of accuracy, the weight is spot on (calibrated/tested with known volumes of water). I'm going to do a BodPod test within the next week to see how accurate the BF% function is, but I can at least use it for trending purposes :)

Yes, diet soda is fine. I drink multiple cans a day and look at my flair for my stats. I consume an Atkins coffee shake now and again but not regularly. For the scale, this is what I use. It's great because it shows body fat and muscle compositions (as well as BMI, water and bone).

u/_karathrace · 2 pointsr/TryingForABaby

I have this one but I know I didn't pay that much for it, and I'd probably go for this one if I were in the market right now.

I've heard you can temp either orally or vaginally, but it's important to be consistent, since your temps will be slightly higher orally. I've always done orally.

edit: both of the ones I linked store the most recent temp. I don't know if any exist that store more than that, though. It'd be nice to have one that could connect to a phone app or something. Business idea, anybody?

I bought Withings WiFi-scale and really like it. It tells me when it's not on a level surface, it sends all the info straight to my app (and the website, but I don't use it) and it seems trustworthy.

Ofc, it's a bit on the pricey scale (ha.ha.) and I don't trust the fat percentage at all, but overall I'm happy with my purchase.

u/PicoBeam · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

My grandmother was given one by my family while she was in the waiting room after a procedure. It very accurately predicted her heart attack as her BPM and O2 sat plummeted. She made it just fine, but I'm sure the early warning helped.

Just keep in mind that the first initial readings are usually a little off. If it makes you nervous, I would wait 5 or 10 seconds before actually looking at the unit or you might get startled by a high/low number.

Anxiety sucks big time- I'm sorry you're stuck with it. I can say that it definitely helps with my grandma's anxiety levels.

P.S. This is the one that I own and it works fine: http://www.amazon.com/50-DL-Pulse-Oximeter-Neck-Wrist/dp/B004BJT9OE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425918570&sr=8-1&keywords=pulse+oximeter

It was packaged wonderfully and setup was a breeze; the only "hurdle" is that each user has to setup an app account if they want to track anything. Since it's wifi the data will sync from the scale to my phone no matter where the phone is, and without having the app open. Data can sync from the Weight Gurus app to MFP, Fitbit, and Google Fit which is handy. More importantly, if you log in to the website for the app you can download a CSV of your entries.

u/SlowSteadyProgress · 2 pointsr/Steroidsourcetalk

Joking aside, I do actually like it. It is easy to use and it is simple (I mean that in the good way).

The one I've got (Omron BP 652) is supposed to be one of the more accurate ones. It's this one: http://www.amazon.com/Omron-Series-Wrist-Pressure-Monitor/dp/B004D9P1A8

Overall, I would recommend it... but you have to babysit it a bit to get an accurate reading. More on that in a second.

There is a reviewer on that Amazon page who claims that the proper way to use the cuff is to hold your wrist away from your chest, completely unsupported. As far as I can tell (from the manual and from watching some of Omron's promotional material demonstrating how to use the cuff), this is not true, and will in fact elevate a reading. (If you think about it, she's asking you to essentially perform isometric exercise, which would undoubtedly affect BP to some degree.)

Another thing about wrist cuffs: you have to be careful of the protruding wrist bone at the tip of your ulna (same side as your pinky). If you put the cuff over that part, it'll artificially lower the result. So in order to get the proper reading, you need to slide the entire cuff down about an inch.

Oh, one last thing: taking an accurate reading with a wrist cuff also depends on elevation relative to your heart. (the stat is that 1 inch higher than heart level is 8 mmhg lower [diastolic], while 1 inch lower than heart level is 8mmhg higher) Omron's cuff does an okay job of this, but it'll let you cheat a little if you're not paying attention. It gives you a blue light when you're supposedly in range, and an orange light when you're not. But be sure to check independently of that.

Oh, and be sure to check it against your doctor's arm cuff if possible. It's not unheard of for these things to be poorly calibrated straight from the factory.

If you were truly eating 1000 calories a day and working out, you would lose weight rapidly. Either you're underestimating the calories you're actually eating due to not using a food scale/knowing the exact nutritional content of food, or you didn't stay on the diet long enough to notice the effects. There's no tricks or gimmicks if weight loss is your goal, eat 1700~ calories a day and log it all for 2+ months with daily weigh ins, and the results will be there.

I would suggest purchasing a Wi-fi scale (https://www.amazon.com/GreaterGoods-Conductive-Technology-Measurements-Monitoring/dp/B01IFYLARO) and stepping on it at least once a day. The good thing about the Wi-fi scale is you don't have to look at the number on the scale if you think that may demotivate you, you could just step on it, listen for the beep to confirm its logged your weight, and walk away. It tracks all you weigh ins automatically, doesn't require you finnicking around with your phone's bluetooth like other scales, and has a web interface so you can access all your data whenever you want.

I would also caution you against comparing your scale weigh-ins on a daily/weekly basis. Water, diet and everything else will cause your weight to fluctuate 6lbs in both directions day-to-day, so you won't have any hard evidence you're actually losing weight until probably 3+ weeks in and you have enough data points to see the overall trend of your weigh-ins.

I got this one because it was the "best seller" on Amazon and was only $11.

It works fine, but it only goes to one decimal place if that matters to you, and even though it beeps to let you know when it's done taking your temperature, I temp vaginally so it can be really hard to hear under the blankets/my pajamas. Otherwise I've had no issues. It's backlit and saves your last temp in case you forgot to jot it down, and that's good enough for me right now.

Want to be 99% sure you're healthy during a trip?

http://www.amazon.com/Omron-UltraSilent-Wrist-Pressure-Monitor/dp/B004D9P1A8

$45. Accuracy is very close to what doctors use. Sit down near a table or other flat surface, slip it on, press start, and it does all the work for you.

If your resting blood pressure and heart rate are reasonable (blood pressure below ~140/85, heart rate below 140), then you know you're fine and can carry on safely. Do it about 5 times on a normal sober day to know your usual levels.

It's normal for many drugs to raise blood pressure and heart rate though, so don't be too paranoid about it. You'd only have to really worry about it if blood pressure is starting to rise over 155/100 for more than a few minutes. If that happens and you start feeling very light-headed and unable to think, then you know it's time to get help.

Same goes for if it's less than 90/60, especially if your usual blood pressure is much higher.

I've got one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Salter-Analyser-Bathroom-Measure-Percentage/dp/B003X3A3EY

I only use it for the body weight, as the body fat measurements are never accurate with electronic readings, and I don't care about the other information. Your body weight will change daily, and some days your body will have increased in weight, even at a caloric deficit. That's just how it works, but the scales should give the same readings if you step on and off.

u/Dragon_Slayer_Hunter · 1 pointr/loseit

I have a Withings body scale and it connects to both Libra and MFP. It is a bit on the expensive side, though (but there might be cheaper Withings scales that can sync, not sure).

u/phloating_man · 1 pointr/MealReplacements

A body fat scale like this makes it easy to get an approximation.

u/Scoot_Ya_Boot · 1 pointr/loseit

I do! This is the one I use.

I just bought [this](Innotech Digital Bathroom Scale with Easy-to-Read Backlit LCD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MFBUSEB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MJqXzbZFRNPPM) scale on Amazon a couple weeks ago and it’s been great. I get the same readings on the scale as I do on my doctor’s fancy scale, so I’d say it’s very accurate.

u/avanti8 · 1 pointr/keto

I have a Withings digital WiFi scale, and I like it. I'll tell you, though, that the body fat measurements on this thing are right out. I mean, even by normal standards for bioelectrical impedance measurements. However, they do provide a good indication of the trend of fat loss, fat gain, so they're not completely useless.

I particularly like that it comes with little "feet" for the carpet. It's very consistent, and it syncs to the online dashboard and phone app via WiFi so my measurements are automatically imported into MFP. And a really nice feature is that if it detects you're not centered over the scale, it will flash arrows at you to tell you to lean more toward the center. I think this contributes to its accuracy.

Only downside: it's a bit pricey.

Edit: It appears the max weight is 396 pounds (well within your range) and it has been supplanted by the much less dear Nokia scales: https://www.amazon.com/Withings-WiFi-Body-Scale-Black/dp/B002JE2PSA

u/siriuslyserious · 1 pointr/TryingForABaby

It's both, you can set up an account on the website and log into it on the app, and vice versa. I use this thermometer. But you just need to find a Basal Body Temperature thermometer that goes to the tenth of a degree (not a regular thermometer to check for a fever). To really understand how it all works I HIGHLY recommend this book. If you have further questions I'm sure you can make a post here or feel free to PM me, I'm happy to help!

I use one of these scales, measuring body fat % every day. It may not be accurate but it's precise and consistent which is enough for me. It's also quite cheap compared to the Aria / Withings ones etc.

Do you have this one? Withings / Nokia | Body - Smart Weight & BMI Wi-Fi Digital Scale with smartphone app, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0728K4371/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kNoRCbM0WH54Y

The Wirecutter says the app is bad now but if I don't use that as my dashboard and instead use Apple Health or Gyroscope I don't see a problem.

I had a DXA recently but I can find body fat percentage on the report.

The nutrition data. It's definitely an issue with Gyroscope and not MyFitnessPal because when the data in Apple Health is correct (no duplicates, etc) it's off by about 1,000 calories. It only happens every once in a while.

I recently got the Omron HBF 400

are you saying scales, going through soles of feet, are less effective? it might not be accurate, but it seems to be fairly good telling me when my body has changed for whatever reason

u/mlambie · 1 pointr/bjj

I use a Withings Body Scale and like the fact that it sends the data wirelessly into other systems like RunKeeper and their own Withings app. In my experience it's been accurate.

Congrats on -10 lbs!

Don't be scared, that will just heighten your anxiety which will raise your blood pressure right before you test it. Look, it is whatever it is! It's not something you like or dislike. It's not your judge, it's just a condition. If you've got high BP, you have it whether you measure it or not or whether you know it or not. Not knowing is not preventing it. Hope will not affect it.

http://www.amazon.com/Omron-Wrist-Blood-Pressure-Monitor/dp/B004D9P1A8/

This is what we bought. I suggest you test it frequently until you get over your fears of seeing it. It's just data. Knowing your BP and getting used to testing it can only help you. Do it when you're just sitting there calmly for a while, pull it out and test. Keep a pad nearby and write down your results. Ultimately, you'll want to test once a week or so. Being calm about it when it's tested is going to improve the readout. If you still get anxious during a BP test in the doctor's office (resulting in a high false reading), you can show your calm home results to the doctor for comparison.

My spouse was on meds for BP. He was and is a ritual exerciser. He lost about 15 lbs. and was able to cut the dose in half.

I was not a ritual exerciser. I had a very high BMI, much higher than the spouse, but was only on the edge of needing BP meds. I've lost a lot of weight and my BP is even lower and no longer borderline.

We both walk for exercise now. 3-4 times a week, for 30+ minutes usually. Nothing much.

I have this scale and it's frustrating. Says I am 9.6%, when Bod Pod had me at 20% (and that seems accurate based on my stomach). It's consistent, but so dumb because I know how glaringly inaccurate it is...50%!

Do you think it's probably just because my lower body is more lean (hold lots of weight in stomach) or the scale just sucks for me and another BIA scale would be more accurate?

u/Paxtian · 1 pointr/progresspics

Congrats, keep it up!

I don't have a goal weight, but a goal body fat percentage. I am trying to avoid losing lean body mass as much as possible while burning fat, but some loss there is inevitable. In any case, my goal body fat percentage is 10%, or just below so I can claim single digit body fat percentage :). Then I'll start a reverse diet up to maintenance calories (add about 50 daily calories per week until hitting whatever my TDEE is at that time), stay there through summer, and then start a bulk in the winter (TDEE * 1.10 calories, i.e., adding 10% of maintenance calories).

Rather than assuming it's going to muscle, I'd encourage you to get some calipers. This is the one I use. I measure myself with them once a week, and calculate body fat using this site.

All the best!

u/MilkMan71 · 1 pointr/keto

Perhaps a mechanical scale? Something like this.

u/nate451 · 1 pointr/Fitness

I've got a Balance High Accuracy Digital Body Fat Scale, sold by Greater Goods. It's not super expensive, so it could just be a bad scale.

I thought mine was accurate for a while, too, because it's not always easy to compare yourself against pictures of others. There are so many different ways our bodies can be composed. I had way more visible muscle than the 20 - 25% pics I saw, but I figured maybe I just carried my fat in different places. (I do carry most of my fat on my legs, according to DEXA.) But I was way off.

It's not that big a deal unless you're planning goals around your weight and body fat percentage. I thought I needed to aim around 165 lbs, based on having 22% BF. Turns out anything below 175 - 180 would be crazy.

u/DrGamut · 1 pointr/Fitness

Consider purchasing some calipers the barrier to entry on having any real idea as to what your body fat % is.

I found these for $10.50 on amazon. You may even do better if you shop around.

How much short-term weight fluctuation is normal?

I just got a new scale and have been weighing myself a couple of times, and it seems to believe I have lost 12 pounds in 2 days (in which I've changed no significant eating/exercise habits, mind you). I don't see any way this could be true, but I've also been ruling out technical causes, and the data doesn't seem random enough to just be measurement error.

I have been weighing in at different times of day, which can account for some of it (in fact, in part I wanted to quantify the daily fluctuations before actually making changes), but 12 pounds is way out of the question, right?

From what I've read daily weight fluctuation is more on the order of 3 pounds or so. Anyone have any explanations?

u/buttmogul · 1 pointr/xxfitness

I have this, which is not expensive at all, and I love it. I'm not sure how much I trust the actual bf or water % but it's great for tracking trends.

u/DEDmeat · 1 pointr/Fitness

I didnt go through a huge amount of them but this is the one I use. They make one with bluetooth which I wish I had because the most annoying part of my routine is trying to remember the numbers and get them recorded to my spread sheet. But for the most part this has been consistent for me. This along with a measuring tape should be all you need to track progress.

u/irishchug · 1 pointr/loseit

I got this withings scale that I am a big fan of. I really like the auto weight sync. Even though it isn't a big deal to enter it yourself, in the morning when I weigh myself I don't want to have to worry about anything more than I have to.

u/justsomedude78 · 1 pointr/loseit

I just got this last week and like it a lot:

Supposed to measure a lot of things like bone density and fat %, but I don't put a lot of weight behind those measurements (no pun intended).

Previously I was using an old analog scale that I basically had to zero-out each time I would weigh myself and it would still give different weights each time, lol.

u/Kuraishi · 1 pointr/keto

Google Sheets, for tracking I used an app called Weight Guru's which syncs with my bathroom scale. The graph in the app isn't as pretty, but it can export the data, so I threw it into Sheets and made the graph in there.

u/Cohnistan · 1 pointr/loseit

I have this one from Amazon. If I get on and off repeatedly the weight is the same sometimes the body composition numbers will change .5+-

How about, hold everything else constant like exercise routine and sleep patterns etc. Take fat caliper and tape measurements and post before/after measurements?
