Talk about perfect -- just... a bit pricey.

Here is a link for the combo. You would need two sets. The wire for this machine could be purchased from any home Depot. Stinger and ground clamp from home Depot or harbor freight.

All total about 100$ to actually get it running. You could probably find a new Chinese arc welder with leads already for that if you look hard enough.

Tools? Welders' chipping hammer, a wire brush, and a set of mig pliers. A combination square and a tape measure. That's all I really needed in my first year.

My first year welding, the journeyman I learned from would not let me use an automatic shade. I learned to start an arc in the dark, by feel. It was hard and frustrating but it made me a better welder and I now insist those I teach start out that way for a least a few weeks.

Practice? NO PRACTICE WITHOUT PRIOR INSTRUCTION. The men who taught me were insistent about this. If you don't know what you're doing or why, you're just going to develop bad habits trying to figure it out on your own. Practicing geometry and layout skills, and learning about welding electrode/wire selection and work positions, machine setup, etc. are a different story. They're important knowledge for a welder who wants to go places, and are a skillset many don't have.

I'd be a little wary of the rocker switch to kill power to the element. Your taking that pretty close to its listed capacity. If the switch doesn't have a UL or other appropriate marking I'd be skeptical that it could handle the 12.5A. Speaking from personal experience, I'm building a control box as well and (stupidly) selected a DPST toggle switch that could 'handle' 25A...yeah right. Let's just say there was a puff of smoke and I lost two fuses. For myself, I'll be installing THIS to kill power to the element.
Good luck!

I wonder if a torch striker would work, like OK one of these:

That torch looks a lot like the tweco mini mig. So just as a guess, I think you need this diffuser: http://www.amazon.com/Diffusers-Lincoln-Tweco-MIG-Welding/dp/B004HAZOGY

A couple car batteries and a welding stick. It's not particularly safe, but its used in 3rd world countries all the time.

More realistically, you can get arc welders for pretty cheap:

Anti spatter. Keeps stuff from sticking to the inside of the nozzle.

The coating can get a bit funny if they absorb too much moisture, it will be more prone to cracking and spalling off while you're welding. As far as the puddle, that doesn't change significantly. Just keep them as dry as you can, something like this rod can will help. Throw some silica beads in the bottom to help.

Im still a beginner, but I saw a chucke2009 video where he compared the cutting rods to just running 6010 way hot and poking through with the rod and the cuts were extremely similar, and the cutting rods were like 2$ a piece or something. So really you could achieve the same effect with any stick welder ran hot.

Edit: the rods he used were not the ones in your link. I'll find them on Amazon real quick. The Hobart ones in the second link are the ones he used

The guy at my local shop recommended 6011 1/8" to start out. He said it burns through almost anything and is fairly easy to work.

I planned on ordering this when I ran out of the 10 lb box I bought locally.

Its probably the same one I am using. This it?

It seems to be capable of producing a decent looking weld.

Some turned out better than others. I wasn't working with the cleanest parts and it was also thin metal. I just need to get some time and practice under my belt.

>You probably already know this, but be careful moving up a tip size. You can only draw acetylene out at 1/7th the tank size/hr. I've got a B tank, which means I can only go up to about a #1 on the Victor chart. As seems to be the case with everything else OA: If you ignore this rule, you explode.

Wow, I didn't know that, thanks for the tip! I can now thank Reddit for me not dying an explosive, fiery death! :)

I actually don't know what size of tank I have, so I need to go home and measure before I start buying more accessories. My tank is pretty big (got it from a guy who owns an auto body shop) and I think it's what's pictured in this example. I think that makes it a Size 4 tank but I should probably read all the markings and commit them to memory so I don't kill myself.

You didn't miss much with the sale. It was basically just free shipping for the rod. Most of the deals were on arc welding stuff.

If you want to step it down you can get a #00 on Amazon pretty cheap:
