Sitting in vehicle for really long fkn time Tip:

Plug one of these into a mod running a dna/okl/raptor/anything that handles>=12v and you don't need to worry about batteries anymore.

My van-livin' kit is the same kit I use backpacking and kayak-camping. I think of my van as a sort of mule with a treehouse on its back. I'm really just camping wherever I am, but with the van involved, there's furniture and a sturdy roof I don't have to build on-site, however elegant my setup is sans-van. Beyond furniture, the van is mostly just a lot of carry capacity for stuff I want to keep around to use regularly, but more, more bulky, or more heavy stuff than I'd carry on my person or kayak.

For a Camry setup, I'd probably remove the rear seat, 5% tint the rear 3 windows (assuming state laws where I'll be allow it), and build a single bunk behind the driver's seat, with various storage/activity setups alongside it, being sure to have it blend in well when viewed from the front windows. The front-most seating area of the back, I'd try to keep open; it could be used as a desk/nightstand while laying in the bunk, and will allow use of natural light. Being a thrifty one, I'd probably just toss a cheap plastic set of drawers behind that for clothes I don't hang right behind the driver's seat, a sideways trunk organizer for "housey" stuff, then the more "utility" items in a milk crate and/or bucket at the back, accessible from the trunk.

A power station wouldn't be out of line here, and while everyone's into solar these days, I don't see a lot of use for it with an active-enough lifestyle and a bit of mindfulness about energy expenditure. Have some extra power storage, but I'd see if I drive enough to just power my devices with the engine as a first measure; an alternator-charge circuit is really just a stereo amp kit with a switch and an extra fuse on it, with no RCAs or remote wire ran. It's a pretty simple, straightforward introduction to automotive electrical. So, run that circuit to under the driver's seat (a common amp location, so it's out of the way {meaning it utilizes otherwise-wasted space} and useful to normal people on resale), set a deep cycle on the floor behind it, and mount a manual isolator switch (if you're cheap and demand control like me) on its box below your bunk's headspace, and run something like a switched triple-socket off of it to the 'activity area' behind the front passenger seat. That way, that area is a sort of 'flex space' that's accessible by the driver or a bunk occupant, and can be easily cleared for interior cabin-to-cockpit mobility, should the need arise, while keeping attractive items out of view from an onlooker, and a boring, empty, OEM space up-front, where everyone can see.

With the setup down, and the frame of mind in place, the same strategies apply as dwelling in any other vehicle, really, but I think something so... "consumer-grade" actually has the most options for stealth. I like plain, white, boxy service vans for stealth when a van is assumed, but pickup/SUV/car dwelling is really more efficient, elegant, and rewarding when the dweller has it together. It has more focus on those kinds of elements that an average vandweller might only really get a taste of, if they ever actually see all three aspects.

> What needs to be considered as far as voltage and amperage?

Absolutely nothing. The solution already exists.

EDIT: Of course, amperage does matter. These adapters don't all deliver the same amperage. The amp requirement of the massager will be the determining factor in which adapter to get.

Right here. They have a few phrases to choose from. Takes a bit of wiggling to get it seated, but it fits snug once you do.

Here's what I did: https://imgur.com/a/eLx5m#05hYF6Z
I got a 12 to 5VDC converter (Amazon) and wired it to a USB hub, but I also hid a couple of USB sockets from home PCs like this:
https://smile.amazon.com/RIITOP-Female-Connector-Adapter-Bracket/dp/B01KJPUI5W/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1524239505&sr=8-6&keywords=USB+PC+panel
I just took them off the rail and zip tied them under the dash.
I also mounted a USB plug into an unused cover in the console, but that doesn't work as well.
The hub that I wired to the converter goes to my dash cam, I did have several other things in it, but it was easier to run 5 volts to different places than mange USB cable.
However my new S8 doesn't like charging off the 5 volts, so I ran 12 volts off the cigarette lighter, to one of these:
https://smile.amazon.com/Ginsco-Cigarette-Lighter-Receptacle-Motorcycle/dp/B074YVQPKH/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524239778&sr=8-3&keywords=cigarette+lighter+socket&dpID=41YKK92oIbL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Its, mounted under the steering wheel.

As it says in the description, they're 12v. They come with an AC to DC 12v adapter. But you could connect them directly to 12v, you'll just need to fashion a connector with a fuse preferably.

Something like this might work; it kinda depends on the size of the DC plug: https://www.amazon.ca/JacobsParts-Cigarette-Lighter-Adapter-Electronics/dp/B012UV3QI4/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1497716821&sr=1-1&keywords=12v+cigarette+lighter+led+strip+lights

He got a electric lighter for his birthday from my grandmother. I was making food and he was at the dinner table. He "lights" it and i seize up due to the noise. I had no idea right away because i was fixated on making food at the time and then he didn't believe that something could make a noise like that, that he couldn't hear. He didn't know high freq noises where a thing.

The lighter would be something like this https://www.amazon.com/Windproof-Flameless-Electronic-Rechargeable-lighter-Silver/dp/B00Q6RZ9IY

Hes no longer allowed to use that lighter when im around.

u/GarThor_TMK · 1 pointr/carmods

You could get something like this to just split the outputs, but if you actually want to mod your car I think you are actually looking for something like this or this...

Not terribly sure what your dash looks like, or which button panels are available to tap into, but that's probably where I'd start... >_>

The wife has something like this in her car, but I kinda hate it 'cause it takes up one of the cupholder slots... >_>

ZHSMS 3.1A Dual USB Car Charger Socket 12V/24V Waterproof Power Outlet for Car Boat Marine Motorcycle 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNPWW9Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TQ1mDbSQA998Z

Most are 5V. This one has a harness with an in-line fuse already but there are ones without.

Let me think this through; If I put a voltage regulator on the output side of my charge controller, I could set it to deliver 12V to the car charger when my charge controller is delivering 9V to it. Then when my panel is producing 12V, that means (about) 15V to the car charger. Most cars are north of 14.5V anyway with the motor running, so that seems ok. The car charger does the handshake, making the camera happy, presumably handling its own voltage reduction to provide the qualcomm approved levels.

I pay an efficiency penalty, but my panel theoretically makes double the wattage I need, so I have some capacity to work with.

That might work. I’d be in $14 for the charger and $8 for the voltage regulator
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F835TCJ looks promising as a charger.

Get one of these and mount it near your charge controller...they also make them without the digital readout... I have one for my riding lawn mower and it works great...

Yes, with a cigarette lighter outlet, but it would also depend on the type of cooler. If you look at spec sheet, you should be able to find either the watts or amp it uses. Watts = volt x amp

Some coolers have built-in batteries too, which would help it stay cold without full sun.

cig lighter outlet, wired directly to panel or to battery (a charge controller in between those would be advisable) : https://www.amazon.com/Chanzon-Cigarette-Terminal-Accessory-Inflator/dp/B07CQNX7XH

If you do buy a panel that is over 50watts, you'll definitely want a charge controller to go with it. Either way, a charge controller is advisable:

Seconded. That's a somewhat weird and specific piece, so you'll probably need to keep the wire and connector part of the damaged one, and just replace the plug.

Buy this - https://www.amazon.ca/Camecho-12V-Cigarette-Power-Electric/dp/B073ZBNP7K/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=cigarette+lighter+plug&qid=1562004813&s=gateway&sr=8-5 - it'll be here tomorrow and then just join the old wire to the new wire in whatever your favorite wire-joining method is

you got access to the lugs that the inverter is connected to?

if your inverter is the standard kind, it takes 12v.

you can get a hard-wire 3 socket splitter and lug it to the same supply the inverter is using.

https://www.amazon.com/ONLINE-LED-STORE-Automotive-Extension/dp/B00PXAMYTC/

then you can get a PSU for your laptop

https://www.amazon.com/CHARGER-Latitude-E4300-Adapter-Listed/dp/B0046HU670/

your drone charger already takes 13v, so you just need a new plug.

https://www.amazon.com/CUZEC-Heavy-Duty-Cigarette-Inverter-CU10010B/dp/B072KDLH54/

get a new tv that uses a power brick, and it will take 12v instead. you'll just use another cigarette plug.

all that would be cheaper than a new inverter.

and you stop dumping heat into the cab by converting 12v to 120v, back to 12v :)

-

if you want to be extra swank, get a DC switched hub, and then you can hardwire your charger, laptop cord, and TV.

>I can say the Mavic is durable. I crashed it into a wall at 20 MPH, and it fell about 30 feet. I just unfolded the arms and it flew like it never happened.

nice! i would love to get one, for doing aerial photography, but i'm scared of dumping $1k into a lake.

u/UniversalAwareness · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

No, it doesn't matter at all, you just need a 12 volt power source like the cigarette lighter receptacle. There are also a lot of car modification shops if you want someone to do the installation for you.

If you want to just get one of the inexpensive backup cameras from Amazon you should check out some video tutorials to get started. Some people power the camera off of the reverse light (you know, the white lights on the back of cars when they go in reverse). That means that the camera stays off until you go into reverse. Personally I just leave my camera on, so I power everything off of my Cigarette Lighter Receptacle. Here are the parts I used:

A camera and monitor.

A cigarette lighter receptacle adapter.

A terminal strip. (This connects the cigarette receptacle to the camera and monitor).

Extension cable to connect your camera to your terminal strip.

Wire crimp connectors to connect the camera to your extension cable.

Optionally, but recommended: A cigarette receptacle splitter so you have extra power ports.

Sorry if my way of doing it is a little hacky, but it works. Let me know if you have any questions.

To piggy back off this, a cheaper solution might be to just buy a 12v portable battery pack and car port adapter to charge it, though a jump start battery and solar panels are definitely solid investments if you don't mind spending a bit more.
