My niece has a lot of mega bloks. She's had them since she was tiny (she's now 2 1/4 years) and we love playing with them together. Usually, her first words to me when I visit are "Uncle Misha, can you build a robot?"
They are great for the very young kids, because they are quite easy to use without much fine motor control - there is just one big sticky-up bit that you slot other blocks on to.
However, I am really looking forward to graduating her onto Duplo, and eventually Lego. Duplo and Lego are made to a very fine tolerance level, so that they always snap together with a minimal amount of force, but then stay together under modest stresses. Mega bloks aren't of such great quality - some pieces just won't stay together properly, and structures collapse when picked up or knocked over - I spend as much time repairing the robots as I do building them.
N.B. I realised after writing this that Americans may not mean the same thing by "megablocks" as I do - I get the impression that it is American for Duplo. I have added a link to what I mean by mega bloks.
See noisy toys are great but most parents can figure out how to get the batteries out eventually. What every 2 year old needs is like a mini drum and some cymbals. One of those wooden peg toys with a hammer where you beat the blocks down and then flip it over and do it again.

I purchased my little niece some mega bloks for her birthday last year. She loves to unzip the bag they came in, dump them all over the floor, and... then run off to play with something else. I love her so much :P
It caught me by surprise when I was purchasing those things that they actually had a set clearly aimed specifically at young girls. I know this is not exactly what the article is referencing, but I was still caught off-guard by this.
I opted for the more generic "Classic" color scheme instead. After all, I can step on them and curse just as easy in the classic colors as I can the pink ones.
Pretty good deal on this exact replica Terry Robiskie Play Calling Computer System.
My daughter loved (and still loves) Mega Bloks at that age. She got those at her first birthday.

I got rid of this one I'm so much happier. That stupid thing would go off if I tiptoed by it, or my husband dropped a spoon on the other side of the room. A friend came over and her kid loved it. I told her she was welcome to have it if she wanted. lol I also told her I hated that stupid toy and wanted it to die in a fire. My life is so much nicer knowing I wont set it off :)
It was a gift so I have no idea where it came from but it looks like this one on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Fred-Friends-BUFF-Dumbbell-Rattle/dp/B00UB8BEEM
For our firstborn, we had a self-moving electronic ball. You turn it on, and it makes noise and rolls, and the kid wants to follow it. This one. https://www.amazon.com/VTech-Crawl-Orange-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B00FD3PVXA
We got my 1 year old one of these on her birthday. She adores it. It is $6.98 on Amazon right now if you have prime.
Yeah, seems like some of the objects in the UI have always been oversized. It’s like they copied toys for toddlers. The issues you describe are not limited to PCs. An applet will not fit on the full screen of a 12.9” iPad if you hold it in landscape orientation. Worse, the app wastes lots of space when you list your applets. If they made good use of screen space, you should be able to see about 2x the number of applets on screen.
Having said that, the browser version gives you at least 2 things you cannot get through the applet;
This ball is demonic - it would go off on it's own, rolling around and making noise. Baby loved it, husband hated it.

Yes! I hate the snail. I lived with friends and their kid had one. It would go off without any movement and it would somehow turn on by itself. The kids I nanny have one and it still freaks me out.
This one http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-1-2-3-Crawl-Along-Snail/dp/B002OSY2T6
Has to be the MEGA BLOKS for his niece.
Edit: Bloks not Blocks!
Totally agree. We got this fisher price toy piano (Amazon link, not an affiliate link) and it has been the best music toy I have ever seen for kids. All of the notes are in tune and there are settings where the keys make normal piano sounds and where they trigger a recorded voice (on pitch!) that sings in solfedge. I wish it had more than one octave and that it played any notes outside of the C Major scale, but it's still very good. We also keep a cheap normal electric keyboard plugged in nearby so we can play together sometimes, and the kids sometimes play on it too.
Ours has survived 3 kids and my almost 5-year old (the oldest) still uses it. She plays music along with me and can pick out tunes from nursery rhymes on the keyboard or vocally using fixed-Do solfedge. I've only needed to change the batteries twice. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I would also advise you to stay away from instruments that can't be tuned (unless they are already on pitch and cannot lose it) or instruments that won't hold pitch long unless you plan to retune frequently. Examples of instruments that frequently have these problems include: recorders, harmonicas, whistles, ukuleles, and xylophones (that doesn't mean these are automatically bad, just that these instruments have a high percentage of poorly performing products for kids). Cheap pianos toys also frequently have a number of problems.
Cheap and toy instruments vary dramatically. If you know a lot about music, check before you buy. If you don't, avoid them or enlist a trusted advisor.
Here's is a few things I got for my daughter at that age that she still plays with now at 18 months!

Also any baby books are great mine loves good night moon and she also loves her small blanket that came with it! You could also do some bath toys too! And clothes is always great at that age!
Jellycat Soft Books were the first things my baby played with. He loved the crinkly pages.
He loves this Fisher-Price owl toy. That one had held his interest since he was really tiny. He liked how it jingles when he was really little. Now, he loves the balls.
This Melissa and Doug shape sorter is another favorite. He still doesn't know how to put the shapes back, but he loves to play with them.
This Baby Einstein music box is another one that he's loved for a long time. (It's battery-operated though.)
This black and white picture/mirror really caught his attention as a newborn. The black and white drawings on one side really capture newborns' attention because they can't distinguish colors well. The mirror side is better for when they're a little older. These Wimmer-Ferguson toys and books are designed especially for newborns.
Of course, he liked (and still does) O-balls.
Edit- Added a couple more.

Does she have something in her room that makes noise or has a light? We've had a white noise machine running in my sons room since he was born. He has also had a glow worm in his crib with him since he was probably your daughters age.

I'm just going to say what are big hits at my house :) blocks, dress up, spooner board, bililbo, any art supplies, books, doll house/farm house, pretend kitchen and dinnerware as well are all big hits with my kids. The local library has the spooner and bililbo in the kids section and these are huge hits! Also they have a magnetic wall that has a litle tree meadow scene and buckets of toys that kids can stick on the wall. Big big hits!
My kids LOVED the toys that suction to the table top. this one
and this one
were favorites. In fact, these along with this high chair are my go to baby shower gifts.
amazon most likely. it's not hard to find actually. https://www.amazon.com/Sohapy-100Pcs-Yellow-Decorations-Birthday/dp/B07PLVMDGZ/ref=sr_1_5?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=rubber+ducks+100&qid=1562937233&s=gateway&sr=8-5
Sorry but I have no idea what's the best thing to gift to a 1 yr old. Toys comes into mind but there are so many of them that recommending any 1 would not be possible. Anyway I did some Google search, read a few articles, checked out the reviews and selected these 5
Plus this tent looks really cool to me. Although the recommended age is 3+ years:/ I wonder why would it be not safe for a 1 yr old. Or you can take your boyfriend and her niece to a store and let her decide what she likes the most. It could be fun. Best of luck:)
So I just got home from a cross-country trip with my 14 month old (12 months adjusted, she was a preemie). It wasn't 11 hours but it was a total of 8 hours on a plane plus a couple hour layover. So far this year we've done three long trips to other states so we've been able to experiment some. I don't know what your budget is, but this is what worked for me:
Also if you didn't already buy her a seat, ask the gate agents at check-in if there's room to take her car seat on the flight (assuming you're traveling with one). So far on our nine flights (counting layovers), our "lap infant" has had a seat on all but I think two. It's SO much easier putting her in an infant car seat and pulling the hood down a bit if you have one, makes it way easier for them to sleep. Stock up on bottles or pacifiers for take-off and landing, but if she doesn't take a pacifier try not to overfeed her so that she's refusing the bottle. With any luck she'll hopefully have a couple decent naps on the flight but it's still hard. Good luck and you can do this!
This weird toy was one of the most successful toys I got for my kids. Ec n at 8 years ild they still pull it out and play with it this thing
Non-mobile: one of these

Others have answered the seatbelt question. I've flown with a 2.5 year old a few times--be sure to bring some small toys for him to play with. Those little hotwheel cars are a good idea, or stickers. I also bought [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Fat-Brain-Toys-Squigz-Starter/dp/B00DEBB3N0) for my (then) 2.5 year old daughter to play with during a long flight. You can stick them to the window or the seat in front of you and they are surprisingly entertaining. My daughter is now 4.5 and still plays with them now and then. I also have 9 month old and plan on bringing these with us when we fly in a few months. Also, snacks. Even if it's a short flight, snacks snacks snacks.
I had a carseat screamer too, I'm sorry, it's the worst! I promise it won't be forever, honestly what helps the most is just time/age, and practice. Mine didn't get better until she started going to daycare at 12 weeks, and had to ride in the car twice a day every day. Until then...
My five year old got these things for his first birthday, and we pulled them out again for #2’s first birthday and he loves them just as much. :)

Your party sounds wonderful.
I have a prize suggestion: A goldfish (like Qwerty). A live fish is probably a bad idea, but what about a water-activated robot fish?
this!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HDATZ
My favorite breed of dog is a Labrador, Favorite cat is one that's not in my house. Non domesticated animal would be an orangutang . woof These would be awesome for my Halloween themed baby shower
For anyone looking for the toy, try this:

Our 2 year old boy loves books and anything that plays music. The Fisher Price Baby Grand Piano is a big hit at our house.
We got this drum for my one nephew, I just now noticed that it's got great reviews on Amazon.
And Playskool has great stuff for babies.
I plan on getting them the Bilibo next year, when they're a bit older.
For activites, I swore by anything Wimmer Fergueson. My LO loved to look at her "activity board" and mobile.

You can also read to him/her, and at this stage you can read just about anything. Whatever book interests you - read out loud to your kiddo. You'll get the satisfaction of a good book and interacting with your babe.

My daughter is 12 weeks old now and this is by far the greatest thing I've bought. We tied it on the side of her crib and she will just lay there staring at it until she peacefully falls asleep. We use the black and white side now and I expect she'll be amused by her reflection soon so we can flip it over. I didn't know this until after I had my daughter, but babies love black and white things. Apparently they can't see minor differences in colors so the contrast of black and white catches their eye.
Also, if your wife plans to breastfeed, buy either Lansinoh (or Target brand, if you're in the US) nursing pads. I was constantly frustrated by leaking milk all over my clothes everyday until I bought these. They absorb milk in the same way a diaper absorbs pee. These work better than any other kind, disposable or washable.
Swaddling blankets are a must. The Aden+Anais swaddling blankets are worth the money, in my opinion. I have other ones that aren't as big or as soft and I prefer A+A.

I got this one and love how it is so portable. Usually it's above his changing table but when he was a newborn it would always come with us clipped to his car seat carrier handle. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008ZB5E2K/ref=pd_aw_fbt_21_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2FV98PB5TYWYHWDKKKJY

DAVE! Get me my lawnmower! We got a shambler
We do tons of toys in the bath (two of his favorites: tube https://www.amazon.com/Boon-Building-Bath-Pipes-Toy/dp/B00R0V7PUU suction things https://www.amazon.com/Fat-Brain-Toys-Squigz-Starter/dp/B00DEBB3N0). I also let him bring certain non-bath toys into the bath occasionally which gets him very excited. Color tablets are good too (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004813L0S/).

Found it on Amazon. Thanks!
Honestly it's nice to give gifts but if you can't then don't. You don't have to give a lot. Peg puzzles, Books, Little People, and legos seem to last awhile.
Chutes and Ladders, candy land, go fish, memory, and other games are good too.
M and I flew two-plus hours when he was 13.5 months and it was rough. He was newly walking so he wanted to do that, and he wasn't old enough to care about toys or videos for very long. My husband and I also flew with J and L at 13 months actual, 10 months adjusted. Also not my favorite trip. Maybe N will sleep some? I'd ask her pediatrician about Benadryl or melatonin. Things that helped a bit on both trips: lots of snacks in a big pill organizer because the doors were fun to close (Plum Organics Teensy Snacks were brand new for M so he liked those, Cheerios, goldfish crackers, Annie's graham bunnies, etc.), random things like painter's tape, Post-its, the Fat Brain Toys' Dimpland Squigz (just the bigger ones at that age), those board books with finger puppets, Matchbox cars, Sesame Street figures all provided some distraction for some period of time.

VTech toys are solid and are pretty inexpensive and kids like the lights and songs. I'm not sure how much it helped him, but I feel like my son tried a little harder to chase the Crawl Baby Ball around while he was learning to crawl.
My son never gets tired of this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Sassy-Wonder-Wheel-Activity-Center/dp/B004AHMCKA/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501696598&sr=8-1&keywords=highchair+toy
You were right the first time, it's fake. Well, it's about as real as CGI and robotics get. Sony has plenty of marketing money, and I must admit they did a great job editing.
This is what gave it away though:
