That's only because an angle grinder is the wrong tool for a strip of titanium. One of these will do it in 5 seconds.

Proof.

Under exactly what circumstances were you, uh, angle grinding TiGr locks...?

Nah, I use actual brute force entry; [Tony Montana voice] say hello to my not-so-little friend! [/Tony Montana voice]

36" Bolt Cutters!

For the finale, put a different padlock on the box!

from left to right mini bolt cutters , cable sheers , pliers wrench , cobra pliers , electricians pliers $80 is a good deal. and you can probably get more re-selling since they are brand new. I would also bet good money they are stolen.

u/random_account_538 · 13 pointsr/videos

A decent 36" bolt cutter would likely cut through the lock in a matter of seconds. No need for all the noise of a grinder. Locks are for keeping the honest people honest, that's about all.

u/kinkdreams · 8 pointsr/BdsmDIY

came here to say this. get yourself a big red key for use in emergencies so you can still use mini-padlocks with peace of mind and without ruining the aesthetic.

> They are often treated by municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and are costly to remove

Um, what.

u/PilateDeGuerre- · 6 pointsr/bicycling

Ah, in that case, just wheel it into a hardware store and go at it with the appropriate sized bolt cutter. A 36" model should cut through it like butter. Best of luck!

u/PhysicsDude55 · 6 pointsr/Tools

8" mini bolt cutters are awesome for that sort of thing. They're definitely worth getting, even if you're not a Knipex fanboy.

Knipex also sells "Twinforce" double leverage side cutters that are supposedly good at that sort of thing, but I much prefer the mini bolt cutters. The "Twinforce" cutters are also really expensive.

u/Shubniggurat · 5 pointsr/hacking

Most halfway decent bike locks are some kind of hardened or case hardened steel. A hacksaw isn't even going to scratch them. If you really want to pop a bike lock, your options are things like really fuckin' huge bolt cutters, hydraulic shears, supercooled liquid gas (makes steel brittle enough to break like glass), or an angle grinder, which is gonna be pretty damn noisy. You can pop some older u-locks with a bottle jack, but that's iffy.

u/Corn0ffTheCob · 5 pointsr/bicycling

Always use the U-Lock to secure the bike to the stationary object (rack, sign post, fence, whatever). Use the cable lock to secure your wheels to the frame. That cable can be easily cut in under 30 seconds using a pair of these

Here's a video for the visual:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P32x3RqsNmY

U-Locks can be cut in about a minute with an angle grinder, but angle grinders are louder and throw sparks which raises suspicion. Non-brazen thieves stick to the bolt cutters.

At the end of the day, the best security method is to keep the bike in your sight. Keep it in your house/apartment. If you leave it in a garage, keep it locked to something in the garage. When you do lock up outside, lock next to a bike that has worse locks than you. Thieves are lazy (granted, this doesn't apply if you're locking a top of the line, all carbon bike next to a rusted huffy. It's all effort and risk vs reward). Make sure the racks you lock to are secured. I've heard of thieves loading an entire bike rack into the back of a truck and driving off.

No device is more secure than a nip or two from some bolt cutters. I've dubbed my set "the master key". Just watch for skin and be careful.

u/ayymerican · 4 pointsr/Austin
u/SOMETHING_POTATO · 4 pointsr/pics

Get a pair of these.

Those cables are braided wire. You can snip through the rubber coating and then cut each mini-braid. There's usually some kind of nylon rope or something in the middle, it's not even wire all the way through. You can get through the thing in about 30 seconds with a mini bolt-cutters like the one I linked you to.

This happened to me more than once. That was my solution.

u/trtsmb · 3 pointsr/maille

A jewelers saw is not going to be up to cutting steel that is that thick.

Some like this will cut wire like that - https://www.amazon.com/KNIPEX-Tools-71-12-200/dp/B005EXO81K/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1542121986&sr=8-3&keywords=knipex+8+inch+bolt+cutters&dpID=41fHxeM8n7L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

I can't comment on welders so I'll leave that to someone else.

u/TheMightyJizzler · 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

This should do the trick

u/Goodtobechief · 3 pointsr/multitools

Not really a multi tool, but hands down the tool for cutting anything is the Knipex CoBolt cutters. Cut any wire like it is nothing, including large gauge high tensile strength wire that is harder than any chain link. And only 8 inches long.

u/iant419 · 3 pointsr/Lineman

This is what I use and it works way better than dykes. They also easily cut nails and such.

If you use handcuffs make sure you have a spare set of keys, or a universal key.

u/Panfence · 3 pointsr/electricians

The cobras are amazing. The smooth jaw pliers are some of the best tools I've ever used. The small ones are really flipping handy.

Knipex Tools 86 03 125 5-Inch Mini Pliers Wrench https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8N282O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PA.FybHEQFVV3

The cobra 125mm small ones are killer too.

Also the little bolt cutters are amazing and have a great puller on them too.

Knipex 7101200 8-Inch Lever Action Mini-Bolt Cutter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SOSC4Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0B.Fyb2HKFKMJ

It's all expensive and I have a lot of their stuff. I'm happy every time I pull one of them out of my bag. Highly recommended

u/the_river_nihil · 2 pointsr/lockpicking

Center punch, small crowbar, feeler gauges, screwdriver set, socket wrench set, warded lock set, jiggler set, lifter set, modified extractor bypass tool for Master 175 / Sesame cobo locks, paint scraper, and a pair of folding bolt cutters on special occasions.

Should I let you know when I do a post for r/edc?

u/TheDunadan · 2 pointsr/maille

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm definitely going to second the recommendation for the Knipex Bolt-Cutter (amazon.com link).

I've done a lot of work with 18SWG SS (around 20,000 rings) and they've been fantastic.

u/tarrbot · 2 pointsr/parrots

I would not recommend a screwdriver as a prybar. I've damaged my own hand doing something with a screwdriver like this.

I got this bolt cutter with the purpose of doing this for the Capes when they get chipped but we had to delay putting the chips off last month.

It would require the bird to be gassed unfortunately.

u/testmule · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

Are you talking Oetiker Clamps that look like this?

One time use, there are a couple of different special tools to do these.

  1. The cheap tool
  2. Carpenter/end cutting pliers work as a readily available substitute.
  3. Side dykes/diagonal cutters can be used in a pinch if you must
  4. CV boot clamp pliers can also be found at most auto parts stores and are the same as some of the more expensive Oetiker clamp tools.
u/imhousing · 2 pointsr/electricians

Yeah and that's a good price Amazon has them for 50. Curiously the nicer pair with a better handle is only 41 on Amazon

Is $32 cheap enough for you?

You can get bolt cutters that fold and easily fit into a gym bag or back pack for a measly $20.

Well depends on the vehicle.. but pretty much all of the ones I've ever owned had hinges similar to this type http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6591451-0-large.jpg

http://repairguide.autozone.com/znetrgs/repair_guide_content/en_us/images/0900c152/80/08/f7/bb/large/0900c1528008f7bb.gif
simple hinge in door.

When the doors are open the bolts are readily visible/accessible
You can technically cut through the bolt in the middle part#10 in image and smash the hinges them selves out of place.
If you can get rid of the bolt in the hinge it self the door will come off... though there are lots of different kind of hinges and a variety or protected/covered mechanisms that are not easily accessible

A few of my vehicles also had hexagonal nuts on the tops of the bolts so taking power tools to that part would be pretty quick.

Edit:
The door lock thing is just stuff you can find when searching for help after you lock your self out of a your car... as for the others basically i lookedup the government regulatory standards for minimum guidelines for stress/shear tolerances for the parts involved. that tells us how much force needs to be applied to break the stuff... at minimum so anything exceeding those numbers will get you results which may vary by car type and model etc. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/rulings/DoorLocks/DoorLocks_NPRM.html bolt stress tolerances are "11,000 N (2,500 lb) or a lateral force of 8,900 N (2,000 lb) is applied while the components are fully engaged" so technically getting bolt cutters or applying directional force exceeding that at a reduced surface area directionally can break the bolts. http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-Heavy-Duty-Bolt-Cutter/dp/B000GVCX94/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top/183-3227865-9997524 and some physics calculations involving the impact force of a sledge hammer as reduced to the surface area of a chisself/crowbar end.

Edit 2: Also I'm not promoting or instructing anyone on how to perpetrate a crime.. just talking about a subject from the perspective of how a car door could technically be removed really quickly with little to no regard to the integrity of the door it self with minimal tools.

u/DickyBill · 1 pointr/maille

Snips are alright but they do have a tendency to wear your hands down after a while... These are a little easier on your hands, although they have cut fewer rings at a time.

You do have an excellent way with words so good job with that, you make it very accessible.

Some of those cuts are REALLY wide which of course will lead to the issue you are having. What kind of bolt cutters are you using? I've had nothing but trouble (bad cuts) with anything other than knipex ones:

http://www.amazon.com/71-01-200-SBA-Leverage/dp/B001H1HJQO/ref=sr_1_1?s=power-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1415484122&sr=1-1&keywords=knipex+bolt+cutters

Same tactic here. I'm really happy with my knipex "mini bolt cutter": https://www.amazon.com/Knipex-7102200-8-Inch-Action-Mini-Bolt/dp/B000X4KOKE

u/smashworksfab · 1 pointr/Tools

You might want to take a look at compound cutters.

I tend to prefer Knipex, with a couple models in mind:

7371180

7101200

u/unclejunk · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Mini bolt cutters (kinpex makes expensive ones, I've seen cheaper ones). Don't use linesman pliers or side cutters meant for soft metals.

u/Jester217300 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

A reciprocating saw is probably best, but an oscillating tool could also do it.

If you don't have the power tools handy just buy a small bolt cutter. You should be able to find them in the electrical isle of any hardware store.

u/PixelOrange · 1 pointr/tifu

For future reference, bolt cutters have a hinge system that allows them to through thick metal quite easily. These 12-inch bolt cutters would snap through your padlock effortlessly. I've seen what you're wearing before and I'm sure of it.

I imagine that their warehouses will get some in up to two weeks before they ship. There are a few ways to score one early. My favorite method for getting early deliveries from Amazon requires you to spend a little bit more money. Add this, this, this and this to your cart and use your Amazon prime to get overnight shipping.

Now you've got a little reading to do (no big deal for us Kindle lovers though, right? LOL!) Give this a read. On your PC, I guess since you don't have a kindle right now :(. Maybe print it out.

You've still got a few weeks before they hit the warehouses. Give this page a once over. Which one of those is nearby you? Take a drive down to the airport and do a little Kindle-lover pilgrimage! Make some notes about what people are wearing. You'll want to get an outfit like that.

Go back a few more times at different times of day. Get a feel for the flow of the place.

Now we have some more reading to do! Pick up the Kindle edition of this and read it on your PC (you'll get to put it on your new Kindle soon!). (I <3 Calibre's reader for this sort of thing.)

Hold on, someone's at my door. Probably about that slick "free TV from Best Buy" deal I posted a while ago! BRB!
