IIRC they've recently updated rules on "bring your own cup day"; to where it has to actually be something a person would actually drink from. IE: No inflatable pools, but something like this would be allowed

New addition to my keychain. It's a US army issue can opener first developed back in the 40's. They will last pretty much forever, stories abound of guys still carrying (and using) their grandfathers P-38 which was passed on to them. It's super compact, it pretty much disappears on a keychain and it can be used for a number of other purposes - flat blade screwdriver, scraper, the blade is perfect for cleaning under your nails or opening packages. The name comes from the 38 times you have to puncture a can with it to open it. There is a larger version called the P-51 which is a little heavier duty and easier to operate, but either will open a can easily.

Amazon sells two of them here for three bucks, or you can get a twenty pack here for ten bucks. I bought the twenty pack and scattered some around the house and in my vehicles, figure I will never have to worry about not having a can opener again.

Excellent question! I'm Jeff Who. In the government, if you want to move money to black ops, you use loopholes in regulations for federal contractors to shift money between divisions outside federal oversight.

Amazon uses secret products that if you buy them, it funnels profits directly to my BO. The BO project is funded entirely by sales of this product.

Goes great with giant Solo cup. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DJAYRIO

Commonly known as an "ah so" probably because when you use it someone in the room always says "ah, so that's how it works!"

I swear by them - once you're used to them they're easy to use and don't tear the cork apart.

If his favoriate game is Omaha hi/lo then he knows what he is doing, even if he’s an old geezer playing limit. There aren’t many mixed games/Omaha books out there.

Just get him poker swag. Something like nice plastic Copag or Kem cards would be more thoughtful and innocent on your part without having to endure too much agony to decipher what’s what in the poker world.

Or a seat cushion for the novelty sake of thinking about the comforts of his live table play. Maybe a cool chip protector for him to use. I’d seriously avoid getting him poker literature (especially that it could be rendered redundant upon receipt) if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I don't think it would work very well. I'd just pick up a few P-38s for just a few bucks

u/sew_butthurt · 2 pointsr/EngineeringPorn

I have this one and have given probably a dozen as gifts. They're definitely cool and tough, but I've had difficulty with caps sticking in the opener after opening. Totally worth it though.

This is my preferred opener, the church key/speed opener/bar blade:

that bottle opener isn't just a gag for bike tool manufacturers, its a gag with all tool manufacturers. Klein tools (electrician gear) makes one. And so does Channellock

u/Dburingr · 2 pointsr/woodworking

I just bought mine from Amazon, but there are tons of places that sell them now.

edit: here it is on Amazon.

We use this. Works like a charm.

Use either your shirt, or one of those grippy jar opening things.

I just use my shirt. Takes significantly less effort to open this way.

OMG, but check this! No one ever washes these =)

P38 or P51 can opener. Open up the delicious, scrumptious, and absolutely important cans of Hatch green chilis the first night out (mentioned in another reply).

But it opens boxes for resupply, tightens screws on poles, clears out iced up bindings on skis, will open a beer bottle in a pinch when you buy some local craft beer (that has not transition to cans), scrapes out a pot, etc. etc. etc.

The P51 is easier to use if slightly larger than the P38. I tried weighing them once. They did not show up on a digital scale.

Where to get? Local surplus store, hardware store, or Amazon (of course). A 20 pack of 10 ea of the P51 and P38 can be purchased for $12. https://www.amazon.com/U-S-Opener-Pack-Military-Issue/dp/B00DMSQT5M (non-affiliate link). These are the US made Shelby ones that last. At this price, no reason to buy the knock-off brands.

Besides outdoor use, it is always on my keychain and comes in handy more than I would think.

u/billbillbilly · 2 pointsr/Bushcraft

You gotta be more specific in your original questions buddy.

First of all, there are 2 reasons to remove an animal from a trap. To rescue (and minimize harm to the animal), or to harvest (and minimize damage to the trap). Here in bushcrafter land, I wouldn't usually assume you aren't planning on eating what was caught in the trap.....

It does sound like you are looking for the rescue side of things, and this is for a film, and you are looking for realism..

A swiss army knife or basic folding pocketknife are fairly realistic options for what a typical person might have with them with just a general plan of being 'prepared'. Something like 4-5inch Condor Bushlore is a decent approximation for what a more bushcraft oriented person might have with them in a wilderness setting. Someone who is going out intentionally to rescue animals from traps though, that is an entirely different question! For that you'd want a blunt tip, the type found in rescue knives, and/or EMT scissors.

For realism, most of us here know enough about the various types of knife that we could likely give you good answers - but you really should explain what kind of realism you are actually going for.

Average outdoorsy person with basic 'preparedness' is likely to have something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Huntsman-Leather/dp/B000IOI0NC/

Or this:

https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Spine-Fixed-Blade-Camping/dp/B07DDCG3HD

Average Joe who has no idea of what makes a knife good or useful is likely to have something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Tac-Force-Police-Assisted-Tactical-Rescue/dp/B01LZ0T3N9

Average bushcraft subreddit user probably has something similar to:

https://www.amazon.com/Condor-Tool-Knife-Bushlore-Hardwood/dp/B002CC6BPM

but wishes they had:

https://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-162-Bushcrafter-Drop-Point/dp/B00B0E1MB6

Someone going out with them intention of rescuing persons or animals would probably be carrying something like this though:

https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Rescue-Tool-Pocket-Fluorescent/dp/B000PX0LKG

https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Assist-Orange-Handle-Rescue/dp/B0012G6KI2

https://www.amazon.com/LEATHERMAN-832590-Raptor-Shears/dp/B07N6P2RCB

https://www.amazon.com/DGX-Titanium-Coated-Stainless-Shears/dp/B01B2YF0AM

And then finally, I'll say this - pretty much anything sharper than a butter knife can be used to safely rescue an animal from most situations. Hell I could probably do it with a can opener or nail clippers. So just decide what sort of situation you expect your characters to have intentionally been prepared for, and go from there.

If you want to be artistic, mount it on a block on rough hand sanded wood stained to match the friend's ascetics. You'd still be under budget and your manliness scale will go up.

Buy a bunch of P-38 and P-51 can openers. They're small so you can pack a couple as emergency can openers in your car, home, office, or wherever.

I actually bought these. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005EAIXAU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They're cheap and they are the real thing from the company that supposedly made the army ones. The other ones I posted, I think they were the wrong ones. Sorry.

That's actually an under the counter bottle opener. You'd spill your beer if you tried opening a bottle that way. It's actually a pretty common occurence for these to get bad reviews because people don't realize they're not supposed to be mounted that way.

Example 1 and 2

u/moosigny · 1 pointr/wine

i'm pretty much with the crowd of get a decent 2-step one like this: https://www.amazon.com/Prestige-Rosewood-Coutale-Sommelier-Spring-Loaded/dp/B00659W9UE

great call on the durand, but that's really for old bottles where the cork is going to cause problems. you can approximate that, however, with just about any ah-so. https://www.amazon.com/DeVine-Wine-Opener-Vintage-Bottles/dp/B00TNSV4DC/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1537730169&sr=1-7&keywords=ah+so+wine+opener

but as for actual best, it's gotta be the Code 38. Absolutely a stunning piece and great engineering. if you're opening a ton of bottles all night, this is what you'd want. https://www.code38.com/

Moet & Chandon Imperial is a good choice and it's not that bad in price, either. As for a complimentary gift... CHEESE! Or if she likes pasta, make her a dinner and a have wine night :)
These are also good finds that go with wine!

I bought the 'B' Letter and mine is filling up! The napa wine chiller works amazing too!

u/SpyCake1 · 1 pointr/Cruise

Technically it's a weapon, but checking CruiseCritic real quick seems like a hit or miss - some people say no problem as long as the blade is <5" , others say they've been stopped by security for less.

To not risk your knife - you can try one of those cheap corkscrews that look like a pen that cost a $1 at the liquior store checkout line. I actually brought one of those on board a HAL ship before with no trouble. Another option would be a butler's wine opener - less "weapony" than the other options.

u/bolts-n-bytes · 1 pointr/EDC

I especially like the real titanium version cause it seems to bend back if it gets bent out of shape.

I want to start woodworking, I was trying to make my own magnetic wall-bottle opener. I have wood and stain but I need a wall bottle opener and Neodymium Magnets although I could probably find magnets in old computers. I want to try something new.

u/smallfrie876 · 0 pointsr/Gore

Bought one of these off Amazon because I heard they were good practice for a real butterfly know. Will not buy a real butterfly because I can't make it more than 1 minute without hurting myself with a practice tool.

u/HalfWookie · 0 pointsr/ak47

Yes, but I can buy that Tapco, and use the remaining $8 on a regular, more practical $2 ( https://www.amazon.com/Giftguys-Credit-Bottle-Polished-Stainless/dp/B00D5DST0C/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1481697759&sr=1-1&keywords=bottle%2Bopener&th=1 ) bottle opener, and still have enough for a beer at a bar and couple bucks to tip the bartender.
And Yes, I have milled solid steel before, not that that would make me any more or less of an authority here.
