It's based on a twisty puzzle called the Gear Shift and it's pretty cool even though it's not very difficult to solve.

u/rdewalt · 48 pointsr/EngineeringPorn

Looking at the cubesplosion video in another comment below, and the structure of the cubes themselves as they disassemble, they look like the MoYu WeiLong GTS series ( https://thecubicle.us/moyu-weilong-gts2-p-9150.html ). Or the Gan 356 ( https://thecubicle.us/master-p-6974.html ) They're about $25 each. They have decent corner-cutting, and that would be beneficial here, however at that speed, Definitely want to get as close to perfect as possible...

EDIT: I opened the video and dove into the blog, turns out they're using this one;
https://www.amazon.com/Yulong-Smooth-Stickerless-Speed-Puzzle/dp/B00H9FSS58/
An incredibly expensive $4.55

Nice job! You would probably love working the Mirror Cube. It's solved exactly like a Rubik's cube except that instead of each face having a different color, each face has a different height away from the center. You can definitely solve it using tactile methods. Here's a link to amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Black-Mirror-Cube-3x3x3/dp/B004D0C5WY

Amazon has it.

There are interesting topological problems that can be made into wire puzzles, but none of the puzzles I've seen IRL have been topologically interesting at all. Each of the puzzles here, as far as I can see, are two or three unlinked unknots. If they were topological problems, you could just bend the metal and take the pieces apart. Since you can't, they're geometric problems, sort of like the couch-in-the-hallway one.

It really depends on the individual. My personal favorite is an Infinity Cube.

u/RAHDXB · 5 pointsr/Cubers

Seems to be one [here] (https://www.amazon.com/GAN-Magnetic-Speed-Magic-Limited/dp/B07VL9G6NV).

Edit. There's also a Vietnamese shop that has a few, but seeing it on some actual pictures , makes it look a LOT less cool than those renders from GAN.

u/Robster4911 · 5 pointsr/Cubers

Link to buy off Amazon. Might wanna hurry theres only 8 left. ;)

edit: they restocked the kit on amazon! Now theres plenty to go around.

Gear ball is the best version of the regular gear cube.

I think they're called tactile cubes. Here's one by rubix

Rubik's Tactile Cube https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDMRRBC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qXl4CbH6GQW61

u/Tessaract2 · 4 pointsr/Cubers

Surprisingly, the QiYi Warrior W is less expensive than a Rubik's brand. It's my first speedcube, and even after only a few days it's served me well.

I did accidentally break it today while trying to put it back together (to be fair, I have no idea how) after a purposeful pop, so do keep that in mind

u/ChristianCuber · 4 pointsr/Cubers

I think its possibly an attempt to make a high quality one of these. https://www.amazon.com/CuberSpeed-Cubetwist-Bandaged-Black-3X3X3/dp/B0711LGKKR?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-ffab-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0711LGKKR

Edit: which by the way is a fun cube to mess with it you ever wanted to attempt bandaged cubes and didn't want to buy 20+ different bandaged configurations.

If my assumption is true, i will definitely throw my money at this one.

u/snowe2010 · 4 pointsr/educationalgifs

oh man, yeah i definitely wouldn't use vaseline then. Graphite is really easy to apply and it works its way into the cube just by playing with it. But then again, you don't usually need lube for any decent cube. I use these. https://www.amazon.com/Shengshou-White-Base-Core-Puzzle/dp/B00CG3A8UG/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1494170938&sr=1-2&keywords=shengshou+cubes

u/SirVoe · 3 pointsr/Cubers

Amazon link. It turns just fine. Not a speed cube, but fine for the methodical pace suited for bandaged mods.

u/Nilpferdschaf · 3 pointsr/EngineeringPorn

I have one and they're really cool, but are much easier to solve than Rubiks cube. The gears force a symmetry that eliminates a lot of possible colour combinations.

There's also a dodecahedron (which has a total of 8 different states), different cubes and an octagon. Which is the hardest to solve imo.

It's actually nice that they're a bit easier to solve. You would be a bit lost if you had to solve a Rubik's cube without a tutorial and once you know how it works it's a matter of repeating the same algorithms over and over. These are easy enough to solve in a few hours without any help.

I found this set of puzzles which look awesome! It's a great test for your brain and also looks really good as a collection :)

There's quite a few cubes that look like that, just look up stickerless 3x3 on amazon. Here's a cheap one I own, it's very nice: YJ Yulong

Interesting. Beginner here, I played a bit long time ago.

If I want to casually play with a cube again, what type/brand do you advise?

I was looking at these 2:

u/Bwian428 · 2 pointsr/gameofthrones

No worries. It didn't take me that long. Maybe 12 hours for each one? Here is Westeros. Here is Essos. They make a 3D puzzle of the Red Keep too.

u/TheDopeGodfather · 2 pointsr/IAmA

For a cheap but quality speed cube, I recently ordered this one. It's much faster than a standard Rubiks brand cube and it's only 8 bucks. But shortly after I splurged on one with internal magnets for 25 bucks and it feels REALLY nice to use.

u/DrinkMe101 · 2 pointsr/Cubers

the Gan Air SM is the exact same price on amazon, get that instead if you want to get a magnetic one. best cube on the market, guaranteed. I've tried a GTS2M, not nearly as good.

although let it be known, the first ever ao100 you do with a Gan cube will be really bad, the second one will be a PB

u/Exolent · 2 pointsr/Cubers

They're only $10 USD on Amazon

I just gave a quick google search and came up with this:

https://www.amazon.com/Puzzle-YM-N020-Movable-Models-Jigsaw/dp/B01MY1UJ8P

There's more out there for assembly too it looks like. Siege tank, Viking, Immortal.

Prices range from 20-50 for these bad boys.

u/Somebody__ · 1 pointr/Cubers

> QiYi Warrior W

I just got a stickerless one for $8 and I really really like it. The corner cutting is amazing and compared to my shitty first cube it turns loosely enough for me to do turns with fingers other than right index and right thumb.

---

For that 4x4 parity I use the alg from Chris' 4x4 Reduction Method on speedcubing.com. It's probably not the best one time-wise, but I found it easy to remember for something so long so I stuck with it.

I remember it like this -

  • r2 B2 - Setup
  • U2 l U2 r' - Move inner slices down
  • U2 r U2 F2 r F2 l' - Move inner slices back up
  • B2 r2 - Restore

I have a Ball of Whacks and a X-Ball, I greatly enjoy them. All the kids (and some adults) love them too, they are not expensive and encourage creative thinking in a way that also involves magnets, which are also pretty big so I don't think there's that much of a swallowing risk (don't take my word for it though).

u/jimgatz · 1 pointr/Cubers

Will they fit a cube like this

u/wait_save_bandit · 1 pointr/popping

I agree, if you like that sort of thing it's a great excuse to get your nails done. A family friend would to this to help with dermatillomania, because the length and texture of fake nails made it physically harder to pick at her skin. I imagine it would be more difficult to pick at the actual nails as well.

I don't bite my nails but I do mess with acne or pull at my eyebrows if my nails get too long, so I just keep them really short. Cutting them short with a few coats of thick polish (so you can't bite or tear at them) may be as helpful as fake nails.

Kind of the same but not really - my husband tends to take off his left shoe and sock when he drives and pick at the sock (why I have no idea). We bought him some nice, super comfy socks and an infinity cube to mess with instead. So far it's seemed to help.

Idk. Unsolicited advice, but I wanted to throw that out there in case something was helpful. :)

u/ItsmePhoenix · 1 pointr/Cubers

You can get it here. It's licensed by rubik's so I doubt any cube stores will have it. https://www.amazon.com/Rubiks-Miniature-Pocket-Sized-Puzzle/dp/B00TVM6CMS

u/ATriplet123 · 1 pointr/Cubers

Amazon. Used to be on Gancube shop but out of stock now (limited to 999 pcs) Also, correction, $70 not $90.7

EDIT: There's also a Christmas Red and Green Limited Edition but I wouldn't recommend buying it since it's UKCubeStore which has a very bad reputation for shipping and customer service (I, personally, have sent them multiple emails about my cube which I wanted to return and they've never replied) - also, it's $117.54 lmao. Third most expensive 3x3, by the way.

I got my SM on amazon for $40, and I got it from D-Fantix, which is a reputable seller. If you have prime, it will get here even faster, so it might be worth checking out. The one I bought is now $42, but this one is also reputable. In general, if they offer Amazon prime, it should be the product listed

The one on the left is how I learned. Rubick's brand from Target. Once I started to get better, I got the one on the right on Amazon.

It's this one. I didn't know about the Cubicle at the time so I bought this.

Perhaps the Elon Musk book - my dad really liked all the in depth tech info in it.

There are also these small metal puzzle things that a few men I've known have really liked - they are brain teasers and can be pretty difficult!

As u/Zibani mentioned above it doesn't actually perform well. It's not just super tiny, but it is finicky about how it moves.

Still, it was a really thoughtful gift and makes me happy whenever I look down and see it.

This is the one she got me...Rubik's pocket cube

Just bought the MoYu WeiLong GTS 2 and I love it. It will be a little too loose if you're coming from a Rubik's brand cube but you should get used to it.
https://www.amazon.com/CuberSpeed-WeiLong-Black-Magic-Puzzle/dp/B06XWDYSL3/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1503196508&sr=8-3&keywords=MoYu+WeiLong+GTS+2

u/World79 · 1 pointr/Cubers

I'm looking for my "first" 3x3. I bought a Yuxin Little magic but it was extremely loose ootb, so I tried adjusting the tension and one of the sticky thingies that holds the corner piece broke off.

Right now I'm trying to decide between the Yuxin Hunaglong 3x3 and the QiYi Warrior W 3x3. Right now I'm leaning towards the Warrior because it's cheaper and amazon prime. Would buying the Yuxin Hunaglong all me to be "future proof", if I start to take speed cubing more seriously? Right now I haven't even memorized the algorithms for the beginner method yet.

Or recommend a better cube if you think it'd be better. I just read through the FAQ to find those.

u/theybelikewhaaaaaat · 1 pointr/CompulsiveSkinPicking

I'll let you know! I'm super anxious to get it (I actually bought 3 of them). My therapist gave me one of the puzzles in [this set](yueton IQ Toys, IQ Test Mind Game Toys Brain Teaser Metal Wire Puzzles Magic Trick Toy, Metal IQ Puzzle Set of 8 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0140RKPY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_zE3MybC6TQ09R) middle row all the way to the left - and that kept me busy enough to not pick!!

u/wilk8940 · 1 pointr/DnD

Apart from actual little puzzles you can hand out to the party IRL I don't give puzzles to my parties. Too often puzzles are tests for the players not their characters and there is nothing you can really do in-game to provide any in-game push apart from an npc. Giving somebody one of these or something similar is just complicated enough to make them invest real attention to it but small enough that it doesn't detract from the rest of the group. Plus you can pass it around and the table and everyone can try it.

u/Discoverinq · 1 pointr/LSDTripLifeHacks

A couple suggestions, I might add:

Metal Puzzles: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QL2XRFD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4w8RDbSDA8Y6J

Super Spirograph : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KJLUTQU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7x8RDbNRC3FC3

I've used these as well as other variations for fun. I also play with uv reactive paint or markers and a black light

Solve time = move count / TPS (Turns per Second)

So to reduce solve time you need to reduce move count or increase your TPS. To reduce move count you can learn new algorithms and try to work on reducing your 4LLL to 2LLL. To increase your TPS you need to work on fingertricks and also getting "a chinese cube of some sort" could help. When I got serious about improving my time I started with a QiYi Warrior W. For $7 it's asking for that much dedication.
