Use direct burial ethernet, and seal the NAS in an underground enclosure. For power, chop off the end of the DC power supply and extend it with this. Voltage drop may become an issue, so an AC outlet may need to be installed in the box using this cable.

Sure, online backup sites are pretty cheap compared to doing this. I use OneDrive myself. But if you want both privacy and physical security; This is the way to go.

Based on this and your previous answer about where you are in the house, I'd try and get an ethernet to at least your room from the router in the basement. Use one of your old wifi routers just as a switch and access point in your room - that is plug the ethernet cable from the basement into one of the LAN ports (not WAN) and make sure it has it's DHCP turned off. You can now plug your desktop into any one of the other LAN ports of that second router to get a great hardwired connection and also turn on that router's wifi to broadcast to the rest of the house.

After that it's a case of trial and error - that might give you decent wifi throughout depending on the house. If not run another ethernet up to the top story and add one of your other wifi routers just as an access point again (just plug into LAN port, turn off DHCP). Might as well put it in the room of somone else who'd like a decent hardwired conneciton for their desktop/console if you are able to.

If running ethernet seems like a ballache, it needn't be - you can get flat cables such as this black flat ethernet or white flat ethernet which tuck easily under carpets and even just go around doorframes with a bit of blutac. Providing you keep it away from getting trodden on (so keep near skirting boards) and don't bend it too sharply it'd be fine.

Thanks for the compliments.

And I'm way ahead of you! The cables have color coded collars. I didn't have time to make my own patch cables so I bought them on amazon, and I must say, they are among the nicest cables I have ever seen. These ethernet cables are definitely expensive-overkill, but a major reason I built this system was for fun. And nice cables turn me on lol.

I'll probably get blasted for being a bit dick-ish but here goes, lets just answer ops question. I know everyone is an expert here but op didn't ask what cable to buy, he didn't ask if Cat7 was an officially recognized standard.... he just wants to trim the cables that he already purchased. fair enough.

Op here ya go

those pass-through style Rj45 ends are made for larger gauge Cat cable and should make terminating your cable much easier.

now the real question, can you explain your network topology so that we can better understand your needs? for example. Typically there aren't many uses that require terminating direct to Rj45. a couple of examples are CCTV and Wisp applications where you need to plug a terminated cable directly into your device. In almost any other use case its better to terminate to a patch panel or keystone jack via punch-down and then use pre-made patch cables from there.

I got this and it works great. Apparently you can go up to 100 meters without losing signal quality if you get a good cable. If you go with this route test it before installing it/hiding it so it works for your needs. Some people will still recommend power line adapters. I've never tried but I think they get a bit pricey, if you want it for gigabit speed.

Try the term coupler, something like this, or in colour

Another would be extender, which has mounting options, and as an alternative to those are panel mounts. The last one is pretty expensive and note, I havent used any of these myself as not from the US, but looks neat.

OK, here's what I suggest...

Find a central location with 2 Ethernet ports (preferably in one outlet or at least close to each other) where you think the RG would provide better Wi-Fi throughout the house. Then make new connections based on this schematic.

This will require purchase of a female-female RJ45 coupler like this one and a gigabit switch like this one. These can be purchased for $20 to $50 depending on the switch. There are cheaper switches than the Netgear I linked to.

I also suggest, before disconnecting or moving anything, that you find the two Ethernet cables in the cabinet from the location where you're thinking of putting the RG. Then connect these one at a time to the switch (yellow ports) on the back of the RG. Plug a computer into the corresponding port in the outlet and test that you have Internet connectivity from that port. Also test the speed by browsing to speedtest.net.

Google Wifi Mesh and Netgear ethernet switch. I don’t have ethernet wires running across the ceiling/walls.

I hide my Wifi Hub and Switch under/behind the sofa.

You can even do it on a budget by buying some old AC router and installing Tomato USB on it and turning it into a wireless ethernet bridge.

Addendum: Thomas & Betts zipties, Legrand Conduit, Surge protector w. long cord, Echogear mount, DeWalt 20v cordless drill, 2-inch hole saw, DeWalt Bits, you might need an HDMI switcher if your TV has limited ports, short ethernet cables for the modem, router, and game consoles since they will sit in view on the shelf. Maybe a short coaxial jumper cable depending on how far the existing one can reach up the wall.

When you affix the Legrand conduits, have one open to the left and the other to the right. It leaves them easier to open in the future. The conduit on the right is the one through which we ran the power cord for the surge strip. We spaced the segment (gap) at that point by about two inches so that the power cords coming down from the electronics could exit and plug into the surge.
