Comes PRE-PACKAGED with 25 cable clipes

You probably just don't have the sophisticated hearing of the OP. I bet you don't even have audiophile ethernet cables.

u/greenzr · 8 pointsr/networking

> Cat7 will include a chip and some silver plating to protect it, which is technically a GG-45 connector.

People still call it RJ45, even though it is GG45. When you find Cat7 cables with a metal shield around the connector like this, it's GG45 with 8P8C termination. If you called it what it was, no one would buy it for not knowing they are compatible or what it was.

As long as you see 8p8c termination, any end is compatible with the form factor you are familiar with.

So something to know about 5GHz because not all 5GHz is the same...

Point 1: 5GHz is a narrower frequency (higher), meaning it can't penetrate walls as much. So while you'll get higher speeds from it, you'll actually reduce your range.

Point 2: You can have slow 5GHz because of the WiFi standard it's outputting. E.g. 802.11n (WiFi 4), can transmit over a 5GHz band, but it'll still be restricted to 802.11n speeds. (<=300Mbps).

Point 3: You can have fast 5GHz speeds by using a newer standard like 802.11ac (WiFi 5) and get 1300Mbps (3x faster).

Point 4: You shouldn't be relying on WiFi for fast speeds, it should be for mobile devices and occasionally IoT.

Point 5: To ensure you're not over-using your 5GHz channel, put every IoT device and non-essential wireless devices on 2.4GHz where the difference won't be noticed, leaving the devices that do matter, on the "better" standard.

Point 6: Get a CAT6/7 cable like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B4705I4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and get 100+ feet, and never worry about WiFi again :)

Man you guys and your cheap-ass cables.. I only trust my computers with the best.

u/TravisLabs · 4 pointsr/homelab

If you are a real homelabber you will only use Audioquest cables. Only plebs use Monoprice.

My solution to exactly this issue:

Flat Ethernet cable, tiny 3m cable clips.

The skirting boards in our house are white and the cable is halfway down below the carpet, so most people don't even notice it until I point it out to them. Goes through a doorway without getting in the way, too.

Those flat cables may or may not be great for long distances, but I've got that 25' / 8m one running gigabit and ~11W of PoE and have no issues whatsoever.

Why are you spending so much on your cables? $25 for cat7 flat cable

Is this the product you’re using:
Network RJ45 Splitter Adapter, 1 to 2 Port Ethernet Socket Connector,RJ45 Male to 2 x Female LAN Ethernet Splitter Adapter Cable Compatible with Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat7 (Network Cable 1-2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QFJ4SHQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_0lnlDbXYVJHCQ

If so, the description states that you can use only one port at a time. If you want to provide more active ports on your network, you probably want to buy a switch. Even if that’s not your exact product, I imagine yours has the same limitation.

why did you pick the F class cat 7 cable? why not the tera or the Fa or 8... I dont think you understand the cable. the connector only a part of it. cat 5/6 have those cheap plastic ends. a cat 7 has metal and gold tips.

( these work pretty well; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CLWQIKQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

again no. data drops all the time. it even gets fake data from simple static. it just sends it again. you can have an unlimited number of pairs of wire to check against, if you have outside radiation its not going to matter. This is also happening at near the speed of light, so again exponential loss vs linear.

no. different game assets are loaded differently. remember those animated images you could inject. some api dosnt even load until in the middle of the game. (the dns change will help with initial load and decrease waste again)

sometimes it is overclocking. however what if it is a 120hz panel? then we are just making it visible in windows. those 3d tvs, heck many modern panels can hit 75hz

yeah lets both agree wan-lan is outside the scope. we could argue that discussion for years XD (the whole docsis argument alone would be months)

u/BurningBagofShit · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

Correct, Anything above a cat 5 would allow for enough speed. I use cat 7 simply because I liked the braided cables on Amazon.

u/gpraceman · 2 pointsr/HomeNetworking

I have a feeling that your the cable tester you ordered does not have a built-in tone generator. It will likely just tell you if a cable is terminated properly, not which cable out of a bundle of cables is the one that you are looking for.

I would not be putting any electronics up in an attic, if I could avoid it. Is there anyway to reroute those cables into some other location inside your house, like a closet, laundry room, or utility room? If not, maybe just put RJ45 ends on the ethernet cables and use couplers to join them with new cables that are run to a better location in your house. I would certainly use a coupler over that crappy splice job on the incoming line.

u/WakaFlockaFlave · 2 pointsr/homelab

No prob, here is the link with what I got for the short runs/patch.
As for the long stuff I bought a roll and punched the ends.

u/PGZ4sheezy · 2 pointsr/PS4

So, after a good hour and a half of research, I decided I really liked the ones you linked me for the price, but I gotta go all out on this. Especially since I may be moving out with a friend soon who will also be a heavy Internet user (Destiny, anime, Netflix streaming, etc).

Ended up going with this model and some surprisingly cheap CAT7 Ethernet cables in the hopes that they will be heavy duty and future proof. From what I've read, both the top-of-the-line adapters and the high-grade cables are super overkill for what I actually have as an Internet setup. But after 3 years of being mocked as the lagging guy in raids, I will do anything for an upgrade.

If these work, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for opening my eyes to this solution!

u/am385 · 2 pointsr/Ubiquiti

I didn't realize those MoCA were only available to ISPs currently. I would assume that they would be out sometime soon since they are an official product now. But if they are being offered only to ISPs that is sad. I couldn't find any others out now either.

The 2.0 device will probably be fine. It is a 1Gbps device and should be fine for every day use. It would well exceed the speed of your ISP currently. You could always upgrade later if you want.

Also it looks like everything you mentioned is download based instead of upload based with the exception of the two TiVo's that can record. That should be plenty of bandwidth. Since MoCA is backwards compatible you should be able to use your TiVo system on it if needed as well.

It looks like TiVo streaming to another TiVo uses less than 20Mbps. Netflix streaming 4k says they require at least a stead 25Mbps internet connection.

I think you will be fine.

If you do go with Ethernet that is not in wall, you can get flat cable to make it more hidden.

This is how I have my setup.

Difficulty: Requires a managed switch.

GPON plugs into switch on VLAN10, router outside plugs into switch on VLAN10.

Router inside plugs into VLAN20, all other wired clients plug into VLAN20.

If you have a managed switch, just make sure that the outside has a different VLAN as the inside.

If you have a non managed switch:

Option 1: Coupler

Get an ethernet coupler and eliminate the switch for the WAN side altogether.

https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Coupler-Ethernet-Extender-Adapter/dp/B016B13UBM

Search: Cat6 ethernet coupler

(I searched for illustrative purposes only, there maybe cheaper ones available)

Option 2: Buy another (cheap) switch

Get an unmanaged switch and use it ONLY for your WAN connection.

I like and use this one in my house for various purposes...

CAT7 is a higher speed than you'll need but it'll future proof it and you'll avoid having to rerun it in like a decade or more. lol.

That would be actually making a cable. Below is a 50ft Cat7 cable on amazon that is 16$. It's not worth crimping the cables.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Just buy a cat 5 cable and plug it into your modem directly and the other end into your pc.

Wifi is only good for browsing the internet and porn. If you're trying to game through wifi you're going to have a really bad time. Use a direct connection and you'll have a far better experience playing online games.

Edit: fuck a cat 5 cable.

Get this instead. I'll just post a link so I don't have to explain this.

How much should I be spending on RCA interconnect cables that'll be linking a Modi 2 to a Magni 2 Uber? Amazon's top result, here, is only £6 (~$8). Will this do the job or should I invest in something a bit higher up price-wise?

I have both my servers. An r810 and a r320 vertically mounted on their own vertical wall mount racks. Just make sure you hit the studs and you'll have no problems. If it's in the budget and you have space in your patch panel, think about installing at least five Ethernet drops just below or just beside the server. Makes for nice cable management. Shouldn't cost too much. I get most of my gear off Amazon in that regard.

The only cables I can recommend. Get 10 of them for the length you need. /s

For reals though take a look here Monoprice is great on the price and quality. Plus you can get any colors you want.

If you want to get a custom length the tools can be had for pretty cheap along with the bulk cable and connectors. I make new cables fairly regularly but i have a toddler and two stupid dogs that like to break them.
