If you want to experience Miyazaki's nuanced and beautiful take on good, evil and all other things, I recommend reading his 7-part manga "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind". It took him 14 years to write it and despite his reputation as a filmmaker, this book is his masterpiece and probably his most personal work. Reading it changed my life.

u/Weirdsauce · 30 pointsr/coolguides

This is one of many books that was done by B. Kliban, aka: "Hap". While best known for his book, Cat (i think this drawing is from this book), Kliban was a prolific cartoonist for Playboy and had several books published as well. These are all cataloged in the wiki article, linked.

Much of my humor is derived from Kliban. He had this wonderful, hilarious and sometimes profound way of seeing the world. I miss him.

u/toodleroo · 16 pointsr/Catloaf

I have this book, it's called "Cat"

u/HertzaHaeon · 13 pointsr/feminisms

Nausicaa of the Valley of The Wind by Hayao Miyazaki (creator of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke). It's a post-apocalyptic fantasy epic in the true sense of the word "epic". There's also an animated film that's good, but the comic series is absolutely awesome.

Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan series. Alternate history/steampunk for young adults with good female characters.

The Hunger Games series could also work.

u/RevLoveJoy · 13 pointsr/politics

He's got a Trump book out now. It's glorious and under ten bucks. Link.

u/[deleted] · 12 pointsr/pics

Maybe it contributed, but in one of his Sunday collections he says this is the reason for quitting.

u/pornokitsch · 10 pointsr/Fantasy

I'm with you... it is not 100% comfortable. I'm sure the legality is immensely complex, so, to me, it is purely an issue of the morality being on thin ice. Most fan art comes from a wonderful place of love, and many - if not most - authors love it. But when stuff starts getting sold, it gets dodgy.

Generally one way to sort it out is to start with the authors and see where they link - Pierce Brown, for example, helped support a Kickstarter of some badass Red Rising gear. A lot of them have friends or fans that they're totally happy to support in this way.

Randomly related story time!

I wanted to represent my favorite comic at NY ComicCon a couple years ago, but there's not a ton of Fell gear out there. Fortunately, Red Bubble had a hoodie with the Snowtown insignia on it. Fan-made, but, yay! I got to wear it!

Then I ran into Ben Templesmith at the Con. And I was SO HAPPY.

My gibbering fanboy monologue went a bit like this:

>"Ben Templesmith! I love your work! I love Fell! I love it so much that I bought this hoodie! Isn't it awesome? It has your work on it! And it is a bootleg! So you didn't get any money from it! So I'm going to buy everything on your table now! Because I feel like absolute shit!"

Oops. Fortunately, he thought my stream-of-consciousness was hilarious (I hope), and, hell, now I have a whole (licensed! official!) Templesmith wardrobe...

So, lesson learned: If I'm not comfortable wearing a fan product in front of the property's actual creator, I probably should've thought twice before buying it.

Boxed set: http://www.amazon.com/Nausica%C3%A4-Valley-Wind-Box-Set/dp/1421550644/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1457228263&sr=8-2&keywords=nausicaa+of+the+valley+of+the+wind

Individual volume 1: http://www.amazon.com/Nausicaa-Valley-Wind-Vol-1/dp/1591164087/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1457228263&sr=8-3&keywords=nausicaa+of+the+valley+of+the+wind

I have both the boxed set and the individual volumes. You can't go wrong with either. They're from Viz and the Studio Ghibli Library. They're totally unaltered, the translation's fantastic, and there's a sound effect index in the back that translates the Japanese comic sound effects ("boom" or "bang" or whatever) into anglicized versions. If my house were on fire and I could only save one thing, it would be the boxed set. It's that good.

This is the officially canon, post-show comic list. There's more canon comics that take place during or before the shows, but this is everything that comes after. The only pre-show comics on here are the 'Tales' comics, but that's because Joss had direct involvement and they're awesome. They're a collection of shorts about past slayers and vampires. There are some reading order issues involved with Tales, so make sure you don't spoil yourself. The final two Tales of the Vampires stories take place during Season 8. Also, Fray takes place in the far future, but it MUST be read before Season 8.

  1. Tales of the Slayers / Tales of the Vampires aka 'Tales' (there's an "omnibus" version coming out in October)
  2. Fray
  3. Angel: After The Fall
  4. Spike: The Complete Series (optional, but recommended)
  5. Buffy: Season 8
  6. Season 9 (Buffy, Angel & Faith, Spike: A Dark Place, and Willow: Wonderland)
  7. Season 10 (Buffy and Angel & Faith)
  8. Season 11(Buffy, Angel, and Giles: Girl Blue) [feel free to not read Angel or Giles. They're both very bad]
  9. Season 12 (just Buffy. This is the final season)

And there's like a ridiculous amount of tangential "potentially canon" comics that I could tell you all about too. Feel free to ask me anything.

I'd like to nominate /u/MeghanAM 's Cyanide and Happiness book:

link

Why? Because MeghanAM AND Cyanide and Happiness.

MeghanAM is one of the reasons I stuck around this place. Always friendly and helpful. I hold her and smartass tendencies partially responsible for the gift chain a few days ago. She gifted me a gift card for my birthday last week that I was able to use to gift seedingoodsoil.

Also, Cyanide and Happiness is hilarious.

Does he know he's a star? Because he has that "I'm James Corden, and I'm almost pissed off" look. Or is he just hungry?

The best cat that was ever under my aegis was a brown/black striped tiger named "Meatloaf" from the ancient poster by Kliban where the cat looked like one of these, but was shaped more like this.

Excellent cat. He sang all the vowels while seated in the hall just outside the bedroom. He was the Johnny Mathis of cats, I tell you. The only animal to wake me with vocal noise, and not make me angry.

I cant find complete sets of Buffy season 8 but here are some links:

Frey

Angel: After the Fall These are the canon comics of Angel: After the Fall. They did continue but were renamed to just Angel and the first volume is called Immortality for Dummies But as i said, this is not canon and Joss is not connected to this, AFAIK.

Spike: After the Fall

Spike: The Complete Series

And here i just searched for Buffy season 8 on amazon, you should be able to find all 8 issues here.

As i said, i just recently started gathering info about these comics, and i ordered all of this myself 1 week ago, aswell as this, which i couldnt find on amazon.

Willow: Godessess and Monsters

And here I sit, waiting for all of my comics to get here.

u/Thelonious_Cube · 3 pointsr/comics

"Shadow Puppets" is pretty cool, but it's also included in the IDW Spike Omnibus which, unless you're hellbent on getting a hardcover, gives you a lot more (mostly great) content for your money. In particular, it has Spike: Asylum, which I highly recommend.

I've read that "re-adaptation" (they used it as filler in one of the Angel Omnibuses), and it's just a shortened version of the episode with not-that-great unmoving pictures instead of live actors. So that's worth exactly nothing.

I can't say anything about "Mystery Date" except that it seems to be extracted from the Masks anthology. Maybe consider getting that one instead?

I don't know what exactly you're looking for or what you've read already, but the After the Fall series is actually pretty good. Or, if you're a Buffy fan too, the Tales or Fray are really awesome. They also lead up to (or, in the case of some of the Tales titles, are set during) Buffy season eight. Which, granted, isn't very good. But I hear it gets better in season nine.

u/VoodooDarling · 3 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

>just wish there was a better compromise between all or nothing

I suppose this isn't precisely the same thing as typical merch, but they definitely have collaborated with fans to make things associated with the show.

The graphic novel is being illustrated by Carey Pietsch, who was doing fan art and character designs for TAZ long before the comic.

They did a fan-art zine for charity, The Adventure Zine.

And the trailer they made for Balance was done by an artist who started off with animatics and stuff.

If that's the case I would also highly recommend Craig Thompson's other works - Goodbye, Chunky Rice and Carnet De Voyage. They are not quite as awesome as Blankets, but there are wonderful. His forthcoming Habibi is getting good early buzz as well. I've got it on preorder, of course. After Blankets I'll buy anything Thompson puts out for quite some time.

That's cool :) Buffy season 8 has 8 volumes to be collected and are all pretty easy to get on amazon, Season 9 and A+F are still being released so final numbers arnt known yet, but up to volume 3 have been released. I also suggest getting Fray

u/NoonToker17 · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

From Calvin and Hobbes--Sunday Pages 1985-1995, Bill Watterson wrote the following about this strip:

>To an editor, space may be money, but to a cartoonist, space is time. space provides the tempo and rhythm of the strip. Used well, it directs the eye to speed up or linger. The long drawing of Hobbes walking away is a sort of visual brake. It's empty, so the eye rests there and the panel creates a pause.

  1. Blue Power Ranger Figure Billy the OG blue ranger. He is part of the rainbow of power rangers throughout the years--the 1st and best.

  2. Summer Children's Book Learning starts as young as babies. We all had to learn about the seasons and this book teaches babies/kids the season of summer.

  3. Durian Fruit Mask Not actually food but...a mask dedicated to the stinkiest fruit in the world. Why? I don't know. :)

  4. Genji Action Figure I want to gift this to my brother because he really likes Genji of Overwatch but this one is a little more than my wallet can take.

  9. Speed The epitome action thriller movies that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats--one of the best in my opinion.

  10. Clean Water Straw If the zombies breech the ecosystem a drinkable water filter tool will help you survive the harsh climates, if needing a drink.

  11. Posture Corrector I have a really bad back and posture for someone so young, this would really help with my health and posture in everyday life.

  12. Lysol Disinfectant I always try to keep my house and workplace clean, so it's alwways important to have a clean environment.

  13. BBC Sherlock Shirt I enjoy the show and Benedict's Sherlock, every fan should have this shirt in the wardrobe.

  14. Lladro Nigara Chandelier Over $110,000 for a fancy chandelier. I thinkn I'll stick with my rusty light fixture.

>Is your definition of a word based on where you are currently located or where the action you are referring to tock place?

Legally, yes. If I get an alligator and want to chain it to a fire hydrant, I am fine, but not if I am in Michigan. So, where you are is important when talking about legal definitions, which is what has been happening.

>So you are telling me that the holocaust was not murder in Germany when it happened but became murder retroactively when the nazi government fell?

You are really stuck on the Holocaust and Nazi's. This started about taxation, wanna return there?

>Is it that you adopt the language of those that hold the most power over you at any give time? If you where held hostage somewhere by non-state actors, would you adopt the language and definitions of the hostage takers?

Language and laws aren't exactly the same. If I am visiting Poland, I would follow Polish laws. If I go to Japan, I'll follow Japanese law. I can't speak either of those languages, but they will still hold me accountable to their legal system. Language isn't relevant to this discussion. Again, this whole thread started with discussion of laws with some morality to be considered.

>Legal definitions are almost never relevant unless you are communicating with the government.

So, if you murder someone in the woods and don't tell anyone, you think you don't have to worry about legal definitions? Yeah, legality would still matter. Ok, now that you realize that legal definitions will matter when you are under the jurisdiction of a government, even if you reject that government, until the system is changed you will be under that system.

I'm 26, and love it. My parents and my great-aunt loved it, so I was raised kind of surrounded by it. We had several of the books* scattered around the house, and I loved flipping through them.

*ETA: Far Side Gallery, FSG 2, PreHistory of the Far Side which is probably my favorite, Weiner Dog Art (we had miniature dachshunds, so of course we had to have it), and The Chickens Are Restless - I grew up in a rural area and my family have always kept livestock, done 4-H, competed in rodeos, etc., so the large number of 'rural life'-based jokes in The Far Side was probably a large part of the appeal.

Here's a couple of comic books that will be up your alley:

  1. Wytches by Scott Snyder (http://www.amazon.com/Wytches-Vol-1-Scott-Snyder/dp/1632153807)

  2. Fell by Warren Ellis (http://www.amazon.com/Fell-Vol-1-Feral-City/dp/1582406936/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1459367957&sr=1-1&keywords=Fell+warren+ellis)

Witches is distinctly small town. Fell is about a detective dealing with the isolated crappy side of a big city. It's a detective noire story, but it might as well be horror based on the tone and the way the city itself is treated as a character.

Thanks for your reply. I was 15 back in 2012. These books weren't aimed at children, but rather for teenagers.

I can't really think of any more information other than the art in the books looked amazing! Each page looked as if it was concept art from a AAA video game. The closest I can think of is this book, 'Where's Bin Laden': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wheres-Bin-Laden-Many-Others/dp/1741103320. However, the art in this book is slightly simpler than that presented in the two books I'm looking for.

The books were originally published years before 2012 though.

Just a warning, season 8 feels pretty different than the show. Joss realised this and made season 9 have more of a grounded show-feel. You should also check out the graphic novel Fray, which is set in the distant future but ties in a bunch with season 8. You might even want to get it first as it sets up some plot points in S8 really well because it was published years earlier.
