Amazon has a ton of awesome stuff for kids for pretty cheap. Anybody who only has ~$5-$10 to give should take a look at this list and organize helping someone in need from this thread. It comes with a Barbie and a whole bunch of color coordinated stuff. It’s pretty great.
As a kid my favorite toy was my bicycle. I rode that thing all over the place with my buddies.
And you're never too old for toys. My wife picked up Moonlight Halloween Barbie about a year or so ago because she loves Halloween.
We also collect Funko Pop figures and get those Blind Box Funko minis for different fandoms that we like.
They also sell collector Barbie dolls, I had a friend in college who used to spend hundreds on Bob Mackie designed Barbie dolls that came in original dresses.

Bought this on sale on a whim (50% off - $24.99 on Amazon.ca & Toysrus.ca) and it's giant: 5.2 x 10 x 13 inches in the box. The figure is about 11". I'm not sure where I'm going to put him.

24 year old male here. Saw a shaving magic Ken doll on clearance last year. Wanted to buy it. Didn't. Never saw one again.
A shaveable doll with little heat sensitive stubble is just so gosh darn campy. Helps that Ken was fucking hot with stubble and a flannel short.

Edit: a few are being sold on eBay at a shockingly inflated price but I’m unsure why. I’d advise to steer clear of them as the amazon edition is far more affordable. I don’t think these were limited so I’m sure because they’re new they haven’t began putting them in regular circulation quite yet.

Go to Toys R Us if you can, ask someone to show you to the MLP section and point out the Twilight Sparkle toys... should give you some nice choices to pick from. Maybe take your daughter and see if she can find the exact one she loved. There are quite a few choices, and if you go at the right time, they do have sales quite often.

I've never heard anyone say "hot dog" when they're on display is likely for the luck, I found it. Can you point to it if you boil the bagel it will be tostadas and store brand.
My daughter has this Melissa and Doug set. It's ok. Not terribly cute and the dolls aren't terribly easy to pose, but they are a little flexible and the scale is correct. Looks like it's out of stock, anyway, so ymmv... This may be exactly what you're thinking of when you talk about dolls that look cheap.
