Wireless doorbells are fairly cheap and easy to install. Use a command strip so you can take it off without damaging anything.

Ring 2 is battery operated. It can be charged off your existing doorbell, or just pull the battery out and charge via USB. Ring says battery will last without charge up to 6 months. I'm guessing that's generous. If you go the battery only option you'll probably want to throw a chime in so it can be heard in the house.

I don't get the weird information in this thread. This particular door chime is still manufactured.

The reason it was so well hidden is because a previous homeowner didn't want to mount it on the wall where it could be seen. The current for the doorbell is low voltage 12v DC. It is usually supplied by 18 gauge wire. The step down transformer is usually installed in some utility closet or attic with the 18 gauge wire going to the button and the chime.

There is nothing particularly old or unsafe about the door chime or where it is installed.

I use this one

I can't hear people knock on my door so I got a doorbell. I got 2 fobs with programmable tunes - one at the door for a quick "I'm here" and a longer tune for the fob by my desk to give the kids a countdown to shutup town.

LPT: don't raise your voice. Let the bell remind them to zip it, wait for quiet, then start talking.

Edit: almost forgot, it has adjustable volume. Be aware of students on the spectrum, the noise may bother them, so I have mine plugged into the ceiling.

Yes... his name is youtube and his buddy google are suppose to be the bees knees. JK ... don't mess around with home wiring unless you know what you are doing. Dont ask how I learned that lesson....

but in all seriousness I would like to know as well.

Been wanting to install one of these bad boys by skybell. spore also makes a legit looking one but they are not as skynet cool as the skybell. Problem is there is no existing wiring on my door.

u/chrisbrl88 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I don't know if that's an old house thing or some homebrew fuckery by a previous owner. Even in the 40s, doorbells were wired to a 16v or 24v transformer somewhere by the breaker box or the doorbell itself. I wouldn't expect to see batteries in any doorbell setup older than maybe 2000. If you find a transformer, you've got the option to replace with a proper wired doorbell (even one of the video doorbells, if you so choose).

Otherwise, just get yourself a wireless doorbell. They range from basic battery operated units to slightly fancier with multiple plug-in chimes for different areas throughout the house and garage.

I did it with this:

The con is that I had to disable my doorbell's chime box. Maybe there's a way around this but I didn't care enough to try. The pro is now I can spam a doorbell.mp3 to all google home devices in the house (I couldn't hear the doorbell in the basement) and I send a notification to my phone.

u/MagicJMarker · 2 pointsr/homedefense

You can do exactly this with a Skybell. They just released the newer 2.0 version that fixes all the bugs in the 1.0 version. Here is the link. They are currently out of stock, but they have bumped up their production so it may not take long to get it.

u/brianbmb85 · 2 pointsr/Nest

I'm not an electrician, but it definitely sounds like a transformer issue. At least that is where I would start. You can get one for under $20 and it's a 5-10 minute job assuming yours isn't too hard to get to.

If it helps, this is the one I went with for my Nest Hello and it's working fine with no issues at all - Newhouse Hardware 30TR Door Bell Transformer, 16v 30va, Compatible with Ring Video Doorbell Pro UL Certified https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HKQ4GC3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GTpyCbZ73Q8BV

Thanks! Did he 3d print himself or did he buy it somewhere?

I'm thinking to try this https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Doorbell-POPMAS-Adjustment-Mounting/dp/B077YBH3LD/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=vinyl+ring+2&qid=1562869301&s=gateway&sr=8-1

But the freaking vinyl side is angled and the door bell would slightly face up...

u/hello_josh · 2 pointsr/whatisthisthing

It's a wireless doorbell. The base unit would be plugged into an outlet somewhere. Not really a "smart" doorbell. They probably took the rest of the doorbell with them not thinking about it or it got thrown away.

Here's one on Amazon for $15.99

I was going to suggest this. You or someone in your home is sleepwalking. Or someone in your home is playing a prank on you.

Get a door lock like this or this and a door opened chime like this.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/arduino

Why not just buy a doorbell chime? Like what stores use when a customer walks in the door so they know to come out of the back? https://www.amazon.com/Operating-Adjustable-Indicators-Receiver-Magnetic/dp/B07HSLB3BL/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=door+chime&qid=1564768575&s=gateway&sr=8-4

Something like this should work. Similar or the same to what was installed at my house.

Broan BK125LWH NuTone Chime Kit (2 Lighted Push-Buttons, 1 Transformer) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VH5ILI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Gp-0AbH2VDCZN

u/Adamator77 · 1 pointr/ringdoorbell

So a bit more information. I took some time to check all my wires and they all look good from what I can tell.

A few notes: Our ring is pretty warm to the touch. I don't know if that's normal.

Anytime I check the device health, for voltage it's always green. I've never seen it be anything else.

Our condo is at least 30 years old and I would guess the doorbell wiring is about the same.

When we got the ring, I ended up getting a new Doorbell chime, this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VH5ILI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and even though it came with a transformer, I didn't use it. I had forgotten that til this morning when I was checking thing. The existing one was rated with enough power so I left it. But more than that, I didn't know how to replace the old one due to its location. (See photo below.) The transformer is located in our hot water heater, just outside the front door.

I'm now wondering if I need to somehow install the new transformer after all. The question is how?

Thanks for any help.

> but are you saying there's sensors like that but the output ('sound') can be set near me or something?

Yup, that's exactly what i'm saying. Something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Fosmon-WaveLink-51004HOM-Wireless-Operating/dp/B01CIYQUBS/

Up to 110 db should be plenty loud I would think. :D

This is the one I’m looking at so you know if this would work? I’m assuming there is some way to connect the Nest Hello to this wirelessly?

You can buy a wireless doorbell system with LED mode for pretty cheap.

I moved into a house that didn't have a doorbell. I bought a power supply that plugs directly into wall outlet. Works perfectly.

The Wisenet Smartcam D1 doorbell has an ONVIF video feed which allows you to connect to a local NVR to view and store video.

So this works in addition to the cloud based app for doorbell press notifications, motion, two way talk, etc.

I could not find it documented but I ultimately figured out to the username and password to connect to the ONVIF feed.

username: admin

password: <the password for the camera>

Thanks.

The technician guy recommended this itemfrom homedepot, but I am not sure how to wire or anything home repair.

So my idea is to just forget about everything and just put two ring plug-in doorbell chimeand connect with wifi so it can ring when someone push the ring.

In order to do so, what should I need to do?

u/Massive-Johnson · 1 pointr/Nest

You need a transformer like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GND8RMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OHYvCb5X5BV7X

EDIT: Fixed link.

u/Derptato · 1 pointr/Ring

You could probably look into something like this.

https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-AVANTEK-Waterpoof-Doorbell-Operating/dp/B076X3HRRF

Would be way easier than DIY something. But definetly pick up some esp8266/esp32 and have a lot fun with them anyways. :D

u/mnkjoe · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Yeah this is what I did, I have a two wire boiler system and it works great. I bought this power supply and wired it into my existing system. It took a little work but in the end it powers the best just fine. If your board doesn’t have a 24v transformer the best will occasionally cycle the power on the board so it stays charged which can apparently fry the board.

u/sqweak · 1 pointr/Austin

I went with this one that works for both ring and hello.

There’s another that’s hello specific, but I was concerned that design would leave the wires exposed.

u/Ask_Me_For_EVGA_Code · 1 pointr/Ring

Yea the app is set up correctly. The transformer is 16 volts, but I doubt it's 30va (amps?).

As for the pic i'll upload it in a couple of minutes!

Here!

Would this be fine to buy?

You can just get an 18V transformer to plug into the wall and snake the wires through.

Does the wifi reach the woodshop?

You can get an ESP8266 and use Arduino code to program up a few buttons and a door sensor for <$20.

Actually, just searched for "IoT garage door alarm" and you can buy premade solutions for just a bit more.
