It'll be a while before I'm back over where it's installed. I'm pretty sure the electrical was a combination of this, which recesses the outlet nicely, and this, which is a high quality outlet with USB ports.

Spotted that in the listing for this on Amazon.

In the same listing is also this gem. Apparently this is how Tim Horton's get their music.

Good to know, thanks!

Any recommendations for safely dealing with ridiculous numbers of wall warts? Currently (ha!) using something similar to this.

Yeah, I do not see the appeal of these things. Maybe if I'm building a coffee shop or an airport terminal and I want that extra "wow" factor… and if it's 2010…

For your house, just get something like this.

It's cheaper, easier, provides more 120V receptacles, provides some surge protection, is portable, and when it breaks or becomes obsolete you can throw it away much more quickly.

Something like this maybe? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MAZ8GVA/

It's sometimes worth getting a travel USB adapter.. since most gadgets these days are USB charged. This looks pretty decent - https://www.amazon.com/Outeam-Adapter%EF%BC%8CWorldwide-International-Converters-Charging/dp/B07149NBFX/

I've got a 6 socket USB multi-charger, that can accept a range of voltage inputs, and has a swapable power cable. It's very useful when traveling and you have limited outlets.

Watch out with non-USB stuff.. make sure it can accept our 220/240v supply.

Yeah but only when plugged in. I don't leave certain appliances plugged in when I'm not using them. Once I had a blender that just had sparks fly out of it and started spinning uncontrollably. And it wasn't when I was near it or just after using it. It was about 30 minutes later and was very scary. If I wasn't home, it would've caught on fire.

Now imagine an oven with a heating element that takes commands from the internet...... Yeah, that's getting power cut off when I'm gone. Using something like this:

The outlet you choose is cool, but this one is hidden:

Yes, a new power brick might solve the issue IF its because of your power brick malfunctioning and being unable to discharge the build up. However,

> I have some questionable power outlet hub/duplicator whatever you want to call it

leads me to believe that you are using something like this and have removed the grounding plug on that so that it would be compatible with an ungrounded outlet. I see students do this a lot, especially in old dorms and apartments. This can be initial cause of the damage and unfortunately could have damaged the internals to the point where a new power brick won't fix your issue now.

The electrical outlets in my master bedroom are causing problems for me. The bottom plugins work all the time but the top plugin of every outlet is controlled by a switch.

Is it possible to reverse this so that the top plugin is always on? That way I could buy an outlet extender like this which plugs into the top plugin.

Anyone tried this USB Charger:

https://www.amazon.com/Quirky-Magnecharge-Magnetic-Desktop-Charging/dp/B074ZQSVD7

It's called the MagneCharge and it claims to have a built-in magnet so that you can attach it under tables and desks.

Ahh gotcha, I do know you have to be pretty particular when installing outlets in the top of something like a table/counter. Depending on codes in your area there are lots of options for popup outlets. first thing that comes to mind is the office desk type: https://www.amazon.com/Pop-up-Power-Data-Station/dp/B00FBU3VHS/ref=sr_1_4 (probably find a cheaper one somewhere else) or https://www.amazon.com/Pulling-Tabletop-110-220V-Meeting-Geckone/dp/B017QZQAOG/ref=sr_1_1 I do know that installing a normal plug just flat on the top of something is a definite no no anywhere. The easiest solution in my mind are metal or plastic (the outdoor conduit kind) under the table with plugs.

For grounding the metal boxes, if you go metal, just tie the ground from the wire going to the wall to a screw along with wire nutting all the grounds together. It's often easier (and proper) to cut a small piece of wire to go from the wirenutted bunch and run that to a screw in the box. Just make sure its the ground and not the neutral/hot wire (generally the ground is the bare copper (romex) or green wire (extension cords))

I use a mix of Velcro ties and cable clips, but these cable organizers do all the heavy lifting.

I also use this mountable power strip so there is only one cable leading down to the outlet.

Finally, I have 2 grommets in my desktop, so I have 2 of these to provide easy access for powering accessories.
