Going to the gym really fucks me up (bright lights, loud noises etc) so I exercise at home too. I've got one of these bikes at home, a weight bench and a squat rack. The mix of weight-lifting and cycling is the best thing for my mental health. It really turns down the paranoia and helps with some of the medication side effects.

Can someone with a general understanding of stationary biking and physics check my math for trying to figure out how to quantify my stationary biking performance?

I have this stationary bike. Its odometer and calories burned are completely garbage. A stationary bike should have enough information to calculate wattage, depending on the resistance level and flywheel weight, however mine produces an output which is directly proportional to the number of revolutions with no consideration for user's weight or resistance level. Because of this, I can assume it to be precise but not accurate at any given resistance level.

I road for 38:04 yesterday and it said that I burned 240.8 kcal and went 10 miles. As a sample, I road for 50 revolutions and it said that was .13 mi, 3.2 kcal. That means that my ride was approximately 3762.5 revolutions, a 99 RPM cadence.

I measured the pedal radius to be exactly 7 inches. That means that 1 revolution is 3.66519 feet. I used a luggage scale to measure the static resistance to be 18 lbs and the dynamic/kinetic resistance to be 12.5 lbs. That means that 1 revolution is 12.5*3.66519=45.814875 foot-pounds/revolution = 0.0148462308378 kcal/revolution. At 3762.5 revolutions, this gives me 55.8589 kcal of energy produced (102.5 Watts). Through a bit of Googling, it looks like the consensus is that humans are about 20-25% efficient while riding bikes. Splitting the difference at 22.5%, .0148462308378*3762.5/.225 = 248.26 kcal burned.

So it turns out that, at the resistance I was using, the calories-burned readout was pretty accurate (248.26 calculated vs 240.8 readout kcal), but would be far less accurate at other resistances, since the readout doesn't scale.

As for the miles-traveled readout, it seems to be calibrated to a 100 lb person. At an effective training weight of 185 lbs, I'd likely be traveling somewhere on the order of 5.4-6.4 miles instead of the reported 10 miles.

Does all of this sound correct/reasonable? I am a complete novice to biking but suppose that I expected my caloric expenditure to be slightly higher than that in 38 minutes but suppose that my limiting factor was muscular, not cardiovascular, and I thus was not actually respiring much more than the equivalent of a fast walk, which would make that figure reasonable.

Stamina 4825 Magnetic Resistance Recumbent Bike. Checking my order history, looks like I've had it for just over 4 years. I've never had a problem with it. I noticed the other day that some bolts could use tightening, but that's to be expected.

It's pretty basic, its programs are just varying speed targets, it can't automatically change resistance for you. But overall I like it.

Edit: On this model I shoot for 13-14mph for a brisk walk pace and 16-17 for a jog. That might be a bit high, not sure, but I outdoor bike all summer so I'm used to it.

If anyone is interested I've had a great experience with this bike:

The display is low enough that it is not in your line of sight, and you could get it under a desk for pc gaming, depending on the type of desk. It's very quite, easy to put together, and inexpensive. The only downside is the lack of arm rests, but I find it just as comfortable to hold the controller against my stomach while pedaling. I also have to put a small pillow between the two seat pads because the gap hurts my back (I kinda fall into it). It's worked well for my height, 5', and my husbands, 6'3".

We use the Sunny SF-B1709. It sits in the corner of our smallish bedroom. We have the app paired up with a Wahoo Cadence sensor. We don't use tablets and instead just use our iPhones. I love the bike as it is quiet, sleek, sturdy and it wasn't too expensive. Before buying this bike we used a free Sunny felt resistance bike that we got on Craigslist. We liked Peloton so much that upgrading the bike a bit seemed like a great idea.

No problem at all. My exercise bike at home just looks like this, so there's nothing very extreme about it.

I got a mini-exercise bike that you can use sitting down. I would listen to a podcast while I did it that matched how long I would work out. I started with 5 min at lowest setting. If it was easy I would do it 3 times a day and if that is easy I go to 10 min and repeat and if I can do it with no effort 3 times a day I would increase the time. Once I could do 30 min I would increase the resistance.

Also if I may - ditch everything you drink but water any maybe coffee, juice and soda not only add calories AND salt.

>I looked it up, it said the average household one can hold 250 to 350, but special ones can hold up to 500, if you know someone who can weld, they could probably reinforce it

There are "under desk" bike options: https://www.amazon.com/EXERPEUTIC-Bluetooth-Exercise-Extendable-Height/dp/B07PDHZDLK?ref_=ast_sto_dp

For bigger people, watching what we eat is way more important than exercising for weightloss. It's a lot easier to not eat 500 extra calories than it is to burn it off. Although exercising is great for your heart / cardiovascular fitness and mental health, so def. try to fit some in, but be kind to yourself.

I'm 6'1" and I've been using a https://www.nordictrack.com/exercise-bikes/s22i-studio-bike .

I've liked it plenty. With my height and weight I try to bike for most of my cardio, but I do switch in some treadmill and stair stepper stuff (too much weight currently so my knees hate me if I do too much of those). I don't know how long your legs are compared to the rest of you though which might make a difference on the bike? I felt the adjustments you can make are more than adequate for me.

I've liked this bike a lot. I came from an Echelon bike that had worked pretty well, but I think I prefer Nordictrack anymore.

The amazon reviews are limited if that's whay you want to base it off though https://www.amazon.com/Nordictrack-Commercial-Studio-1-Year-Membership/dp/B07TGQZGGZ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=nordictrack+s22i&qid=1567011331&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzSDJMTEJVN0pFWVVBJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjg0ODU0R1dYODQxUzMwQkRWJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxMzk5NDMyVVdVSUdQOFJDNk81JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

And FWIW I got mine cheaper thanks to a coupon if you do go the purchase route.

My doctor recommended stationary cycling and I've found it to be valuable. My ankle doesn't bother me at all and I can get a good little workout in. I didn't want to spend money for a gym membership just to use the bikes and I don't have room for a full sized one in my house but I did find this and it works wonders. Compact and can be slid under my bed when not in use.

I just bought the cheapest one I could find in my local gym supplies shop. It was similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/TODO-Exerciser-Peddler-Foldable-Monitor/dp/B075JDLM3B?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_7 but got it for cheaper.

No 40 lb. flyweight (flywheel?) but we've had good luck with the Marcy AIR 1 Fan Bike

How about this one

I just set the display to speed and watch that I don't let it fall too low. I would still say that a treadmill on an incline is probably going to burn calories faster. I went with a bike over the treadmill because it's smaller and easier on my knees, and I can keep my upper torso steady for holding using a mouse or holding a book.

I know there are motorized pedal units that I think are intended for therapeutic use, this one has decent reviews:
