How fucking hard is it to design a microwave? This may be the worst thing I've seen on this sub.

No, I mean it. I've seen a LOT of bad designs, but I feel like this one takes the cake.

This one, actual engineers and designers looked over and said "Yes, THIS is the way a microwave should be. No one who uses a microwave has any fucking need for a NUMBER PAD."

This is like designing a car with the fucking Donkey Kong Bongos instead of a steering wheel.

Nintendo Super Smash Bros. Black Classic Gamecube Controller https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O9GW8VK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xlstzb5FM9CV3

Also, you'll want one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Honbay-128MB-Memory-Compatible-Gamecube/dp/B011HMIVJ6/ref=pd_sim_63_20?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B011HMIVJ6&pd_rd_r=GJ44Z55TGX4ZPE9KWCE4&pd_rd_w=3u86I&pd_rd_wg=iYIzW&psc=1&refRID=GJ44Z55TGX4ZPE9KWCE4

Do your research though, some won't work properly.

Games (in no particular order):

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Metroid Prime, 1 and 2 (recommend playing prime 1 first, prime 2 is Nintendo hard at times. Also IMO Prime 1 is better for popping your cherry between the two. There is a third game for the Wii and the first two games were ported to the Wii with updated graphics and controls, in case you would prefer to play the Wii version. Def play Prime 1 first however)

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (pick one and play the other if you like it. Also TP was ported to Wii with motion controls, and the whole game was mirrored to accommodate for that. IMO the 'cube version is better. That said, Nintendo tried for a more realistic stylization and thus it hasn't aged nearly as well as WW)

Starfox Adventures (if you liked the Zelda games, def check this one out)

Starfox Assault (absolutely nothing like Starfox Adventures. But a good game nonetheless)

F-Zero GX

Super Monkey Ball 2 (don't bother with Monkey Ball 1, Monkey Ball 2 is just straight-up superior in every way)

Super Mario Sunshine (This classic has aged like fine wine. Graphics were good back then and still hold up today, thanks to its stylization)

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (if you are only going to play one game make it this one. Absolutely fantastic unique and creative game, everything about it is perfect; years later and nostalgia still hits HARD for this one, so many memorable moments)

SSX Tricky, SSX 3, SSX On-Tour. (Pick one and play the others if you like it, they all have their own charm. Tricky is arcadey but entertaining. 3 has a more serious tone to it)

Timesplitters Future Perfect

Luigi's Mansion (it's the Ghostbusters game we didn't ask for but oh so desperately needed)

Resident Evil 4 (this game got ported to the Wii with extra content and with Wii controls. I can't speak to it's quality but you should consider looking at both versions)

Mario Kart: Double Dash

Viewtiful Joe

Soul Calibur II

Pikmin 1 and 2

Beyond Good and Evil

Kirby Air Ride

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness/Pokemon Colosseum (Pick one and play the other if you like it. These are sort of a 3D proper Pokemon game. Not quite but close enough)

Chibi Robo (Never actually played it myself but it has a very loyal fanbase)

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (probably the only superb 3D Sonic game ever imo. Feel free to call me out on it if I'm wrong)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (back when movie-games were good)

Honorable mentions:

Geist (a unique FPS only held back by it's lackluster writing and production quality)

Mario Party 5 (not a huge fan of the series myself but a lot of people like them. Wii games are prolly better tho tbh)

Animal Crossing (the Wii version is so much better)

SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom/The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game (BBB IMO is much much better but the movie game wasn't terrible and features very similar gameplay)

Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures (fantastic game but you really need to play it with friends... Which necessitates at minimum 2 GBA's/SPs and 2 GBA-NGC adapters and optimally 4 of each)

P.N.03 (good luck finding this one. Best description I have for it is that it is a Bayonetta shooter game on the gamecube)

The Sims

Lego Star Wars games (really should play it with a friend)

Need for Speed Most Wanted

Mario Golf

Super Mario Strikers

Mario Superstar Baseball

Timesplitters 2 (IMO Future Perfect is better but this one is worth checking out)

Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater 3/4 (Never actually played but I'm a huge fan of THPS2 on the N64 so I imagine these newer ones are also good)

Wario World (Sort of a hidden gem. Like a 3d Warioland. IMO the Warioland games are better but this is worth looking at)

Other games as well but this is the cream of the crop IMO and they all exemplify what made the 'cube such a great console. I'm sure there are fantastic games that I missed, of course explore everyone else's comments as well :-)

Congrats on the decision to play some GameCube games. You are in for a treat.

u/derrick81787 路 9 pointsr/wii

I'd also like to point out that a Wii can play Wii and Gamecube games, but a Wii U can play Wii U and Wii games (but not Gamecube). Which you want I guess really depends on what you are wanting to play. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are Wii games, so that limits you to the Wii or Wii U if you actually want to play those, but Super Mario Odyssey will be a Switch exclusive.

-------------------------

If you get that $38 Wii, here is what you can do.

The Wii I linked to includes everything you need to play:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii
  • Mario Kart Wii

as well as most other Wii games. The only thing it doesn't have is a Wii Motion Plus accessory, so you can't play any game that requires those. Controllers that have that built in aren't expensive, though. It also comes with Wii Play which is fun little game that comes with a bunch of mini games like air hockey and stuff like that.

Buy a Gamecube controller to go with it, and now you can play:

  • Mario Kart Double Dash
  • Super Mario Sunshine

as well as every other Gamecube game. There are lots of games for both Wii and Gamecube, but I'm sticking with Mario and Mario Kart since that is what you mentioned. Luigi's Mansion is also a Gamecube game that isn't strictly a "Mario" game but maybe it's close enough.

From what I'm reading online, the Wii virtual console is still running. That means that you can buy and download some NES, SNES, N64, etc. games. I have no idea how long that will continue to work since the Wii is so old, but you should be able to play the games you've already downloaded even if they shut down the download service in the near future. [Edit: here is the listing of available Wii virtual console games. I guess it is still running.]

The Wii is a good budget option that does let you play quite a few games.

    ---------------------------------------------

If you get the $200 Wii U, you can play:

  • Mario Kart 8
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • New Super Mario Bros U
  • Yoshi's Wooly World (maybe close enough to a Mario game?)

as well as any other Wii U game.

If you get a Wii controller, then you can also play:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii
  • Mario Kart Wii

as well as any other Wii games that you could have played on the Wii. You can't play any of the Gamecube games, though.

The Wii U's virtual console is still active for sure, so you can also buy and download some older games for older consoles. I don't think Gamecube is included in that, though, but NES, SNES, N64, etc. will be. Not every game, but a lot of the good ones will be there. You can browse your options here. Additionally, the Wii's virtual console will be available on the Wii U as well, assuming that it is still running. I doubt that it has much that isn't already in the Wii U's virtual console, though.

The Wii U is more expensive than a Wii. You still get all of the Wii's games, but you are trading the ability to play older Gamecube games for the ability to play newer Wii U games. You're also getting a virtual console that will for sure work for a while as well as the ability to use off-screen play on the gamepad.

    -----------------------

The Nintendo Switch is $300 and is brand new. It can't play Wii or Wii U games, however, all upcoming games will be for the Switch. You can play Switch games, and the virtual console that lets you buy older games isn't out yet but will be coming soon. Anything new that comes out will be for the Switch. The Switch is also portable, kind of a mix between a console and a handheld. This is the current generation's console, and it was only released in March of this year.

The highest quality picture you can natively get out of the Gamecube is 480p (enhanced definition) using these: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-GameCube-Component-Video-Cable-Pc/dp/B00005QDJU

They are very rare (due to limited production quantity) and such, very expensive. But, in layman's terms, that is the best picture you can naturally get out of the gamecube. All modern TVs have component input (Red, Green, Blue), and they look pretty great, even by today's standard. That said, only about half the Gamecube games are even capable of out putting in 480i 480p. You can find a list and more on the component cables here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GameCube_games_with_alternate_display_modes

The other option, you can mod your Gamecube to install a HDMI out. It's difficult to do, requires a lot of knowledge, skill and tools. The easiest way is to find someone to do it for you. All that to say, it's not cheap and is more risky 9what if it breaks?).

Finally, there is a company called Bad Ass Consoles, that is "supposedly" releasing an external HDMI plug for the Gamecube called the GCVideo X, but it's still in development and has been for a while. I'm sure it won't be cheap, but all the games will look good.

The cheapest non-Gamecube-console option is to buy a Wii, which will basically do the same thing the component cables will (480p R,G,B), but much cheaper, using Wii's component cables.

Bottom line: You have options to get the gamecube to look great, but none of them are really cheap. I have the component cables. They are reliable, and I love them. It's all a matter of taste. I play the cube all the time, so even though it was expensive, I have no regrets.

If you are looking for the less expensive route, get a Wii and Wii component cables.

I got one of these at a pawn shop awhile ago and it works great!

If you use a full size cd binder the disks will slide around and get scratched, plus this one is licensed by Nintendo so I don't see them licensing something that wasn't tested thoroughly

I've heard nothing but good things about the 2008 white controllers. You could also take a gamble on the ones they sell on amazon, like this one. I bought one of these and it was in damn near mint condition, not sure of the seller tho.

This is a bit expensive, but you can buy this which fit Gamecube games very well.

u/alsoodani 路 2 pointsr/gaming

If you had a Gamecube and a couple of Gameboys lying around Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals is one of THE most fun Co-ops to play with friends/special lady friends.

It's a hack and slash, action RPG that has 4 races with different strengths and weaknesses (but very simple, straight forward). '

The gameboy is your controller and everyone has a different map on the gameboys (treasure map, monster map, etc) so it forces you to work together. You could combine your attacks or magic to dole out bigger damage (It takes a team effort as some bosses actually require certain combos be fired at them!).

It is one of the greatest co-ops ever not just because of game play, nice graphics, and awesome musical score but also because you could literally have a non-gamer addicted in seconds. It is so easy to get into yet it has depth if you want that as well.

This is the Co-op game you and your girl are looking for. You can buy it new in amazon for about $20 and the gamecube gameboy link cable for about $8 each.

This is cheaper than a pro controller and will last longer, just go under 'used' because OG's are hella expensive new. You'll need the adapter too tho, so it'll be about 45 all together. I have a strong thumb too lmao, my knockoff's joystick kinda went limp after a few weeks

They also sell 2-packs of those stickboxes on amazon for $10. I can鈥檛 attest to whether or not they鈥檙e any good, but it鈥檚 a lower risk than buying a whole new controller if your thing doesn鈥檛 fix the problem.

Although I think the oldest controllers have them glued or soldered on, while newer ones just have clips that you can pop them out of.

Edit: this thing, though a couple complaints about the quality so buy at your own risk. Specifically a melee player says they鈥檙e no good, but they don鈥檛 explain why so...idk

u/moleman_dgaf 路 2 pointsr/smashbros

I don't think those ones are produced anymore, so you'd probably have to either settle for a used one or pay a ridiculous amount for a new one :\

This one is $90, don't think you could find one of the same quality for a better price.

Okay. So at the $50 price point the best card I know is the Avermedia c039. However, I don't know if it will perform better than your current card.

The first thing you should do that will give you a huge quality boost is deinterlace your video. You see those weird lines that show up whenever your character moves? There's an easy way to get rid of them in OBS. Under your capture card's settings there should be an option for deinterlacing. Yadif x2 looks the best imo. If your processor is too weak try regular yadif. This should make the video quality much better.

Also, are you using a spitter? For these capture cards the easiest way to get optimal capture with them is to use S video cables that have the yellow output and the s video like these and plug the yellow one in to the TV and the s video in to the capture card.

Here is a quality example of the c039 with Melee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2HoOTBunnE

Compare that to the results you get with your capture card and see if it's worth it to you to upgrade. I doubt the quality will be much better but who knows.

If you want to save up for something better you don't have many options. You could do an RGB or HDMI mod to your n64 to get the best possible quality. I don't recommend the elgato. It does it's own deinterlacing and I think it makes the picture look blurry. A cheaper capture card will give a better end result. Your next step up if you don't mod is probably the X Capture 1 or Micomsoft SC512 or maybe some cheaper PCI internal card. I'm not sure if there's a middle ground between $50 and $200+. Good luck!

I picked up a 30 inch vizio early this year and had no luck with using the comp cables. The only solution that worked for me was hooking up the n64 through the cable coaxial input, I bought an adapter off amazon and it works great (link is below) kind of a bummer, but hope this helps !

What is a 'real' Mario game? What is a 'real' Zelda game?

Mario 1-3 & Super Mario World (console) all had gameplay that is very very similar to Super Mario Land (Gameboy) & New Super Mario Bros (Nintendo DS) & New Super Mario Bros Wii (which is almost identical to the DS game). Side scroller, race to the flag at the end of the level, various powerups from question blocks and bottomless pits to fall into.

Zelda gets even harder since it has continuously switched between 2D and 3D and the only common element between the games is Link, the Mastersword, Ganon and the Princess. You can buy OoT (in 3D) for both N64, rereleased on Gamecube and Nintendo 3DS.

To further refute the claim that Nintendo doesn't canabalize their own markets look at how they are rereleasing all their old games for download through the online store and the fact that they offer backwards compatibility for legacy systems. How about the Game Boy Advance Cable that lets you play handheld games through the console?

u/Maspect 路 1 pointr/SSBM

If it's an RF port and you play on a Gamecube, you can get one of these used via Amazon for ~$10 https://www.amazon.com/GameCube-RF-Switch-Modulator/dp/B00005RL4L .

I used it with a CRT that only had an RF port, and after a few hours of play testing, found no difference in lag compared to other CRTs that use component cables. However, this RF switch only works for Gamecube, not for Wii. The closest equivalent I could find for a Wii cost more, and would probably introduce lag during the conversion.

for Virtual console hack you need to follow this tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vip4edkBAS8

This will let you play wii and gamecube games.

For wii u games you need to install Mocha : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnwB2Yfsnk8

Besides games on Loadiine you can install retroarch, its a lot of work but totally worth it, the Wii U is basically 3 consoles in 1 and everyone should have one, specially if you want to play gamecube over component or hdmi without purchasing that expensive cable : https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-GameCube-Component-Video-Cable/dp/B00005QDJU

I bought that brand before and it broke within a day from playing Smash.

Reaaaallly not the best idea to take chances with 3rd-party controllers over Nintendo ones. You really are not likely to see more than a month use out of them. Unless it's like HORI made, or you plan on fixing them after they break. And I say "after," because they will break.

If you need to go cheap, I hear this one is good for 3rd-party: http://www.amazon.com/CostBuy-Controller-Nintendo-GameCube-Wired-GamePad/dp/B00DHUBDME/ref=pd_sim_sbs_vg_14?ie=UTF8&refRID=00W7649TGCG357NW35J9

That, or look for used ones. There's a tons online for 20 dollars or less (and that's with shipping). Or look around at pawnshops, retro gaming stores, or garage/yard sales. You'll tend to be able to find them for 10 bucks or less each.
