If you bought him chisels, do you know if he'd have a way to sharpen them? If he doesn't, maybe buy cheaper chisels and also diamond sharpening stones. Chisels will eventually need to get sharpened and sharpening stones can be more expensive than chisels.

As far as leather, this one I got from Amazon that worked out ok:

Honestly, if you're in the States, I'd recommend checking if there is a Tandy Leather or Hobby Lobby nearby. Tandy will have a much broader, more cost effective selection. Hobby Lobby will have similar pieces to what's linked to Amazon, but at least you'll be able to see it.
You might be better off using some smaller pieces put together if you are try to save money. Regardless, 12x24 for ~$20 or 36x36 for ~$50 on amazon:

I bought some off amazon that could be hand sewn, though with some difficulty. I'm not really that knowledgeable on different type if leather, I generally end up using what I can salvage as I like recycling stuff like that.

This is the stuff I did buy.
There are many shops on Etsy that deal in leather, and if you PM the owners I am sure you could be more professionally directed tot he type of leather you should use.
Newzeland farm raised Deer hide for $55 on Amazon, I am sure CA could get a discount if they ordered in bulk : P
