Honestly, it is completely unreasonable for the landlord to expect you to live with this. The situation creates risk around the clock. Risk to your person (especially when sleeping), your belongings, and your sense of security. I don't know where you are, but in my state there are very specific laws about how many/what types of locks must be on entry doors. Violation of these laws is actually considered justification for terminating the lease (in my state). Please look into your local rental laws. I know it can be uncomfortable pushing for your rights with a landlord, but this one is important. If she is unwilling to fix something so obviously inconvenient/dangerous, what will she do when the roof starts leaking or the heat stops working?

That being said, these exist. They are a minimal solution. However, as you seem to have an unreasonable landlord, I would caution you not to drill any holes yourself. You do not want to be on the hook for a botched job or a hole on the exterior of the door if/when she gets around to reversing it. Good luck OP, I hope you can get this worked out.

Ok here's the plan.

hasmat suit 7.50

Mesh tape 3.99

rubber gloves 5.99

Weapon 1.99

Total: 19.47

Suit up, mesh tape gap in gloves and over face hole. Swat at ants like my life depends on it. It's going to be a tough fight with such a constrained budget but it's the best plan I can come up with under budget. I splurged on better gloves since the low weapon budget left me with a rather short melee weapon.

A slightly higher budget would have allowed me to suit up and spread Diatomaceous earth $12.97 (replace the gloves with cheaper ones and skip the swatter) instead of resorting to melee attacks. 30 bucks would greatly increase my chances as survival as i could spread it around and just avoid the ants as best i could.

If survival isn't a win condition then

undiluted Bifen i/t $16.02

spray bottle $2.24

total: $18.26

This shit is serious stuff. Cover all the floor surfaces as wide i can. No ants will survive the room for the next few years.

Op

door stop with alarm

window stop in case you have a window near the door

ip security cam with mic

probably a bit overkill, but since you live alone id suggest having them anyways.

u/RikerOmega3 · 3 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

ditch the curtain and do something like this on the window

Its really simple if you get a window kit. You clean the window, spray it down with soapy water, then peel the clear film off the back of the window film (think peeling the white paper off sticky velcro) then use the squeegy to flatten out all the bubbles

You don't need a curtain by using this, and nobody can see it. Right away this will make the room feel larger cus you don't have a dark curtain in the way.

My next suggestion would be to find a crafty person who can sew and have them hem a shower curtain so it doesn't drag the floor.

The register in the floor could be replaced with a decorative metal version in stainless steel...and it would end up looking like a drain.

As for color, I think a nice light blue grey would work.

We have a glass sliding door in our son's room too. The hardware store has things that you can affix to the door to prevent it from sliding too far open. We have one that you can tighten and loosen manually to take it on and off (similar to this one). I have it fastened at the top of the door track such that the door can be opened around 2 inches, so that we can get a bit of a breeze in there when it's hot.

They make cat resistant screen material now.

Just replace the screens and open the windows!

u/AbsolutelyPink · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Yep, they can be removed. If you're strong, you lift the door up and out.

One way to prevent this is pin locks https://www.amazon.com/55201-Window-Guard-Sliding-Windows/dp/B0036UFTVQ/ref=asc_df_B0036UFTVQ/

I'm not really sure how they're useless if you are complaining about bugs right now. There's a use for them occasionally, and they're just a thin mesh screen, they can't be that expensive, even in Europe.

Some of the windows in my US home don't have screens, but I got some adjustable screens you just pop into the open window space, voila! Problem solved. Something like this although with more visibility.

I have an Allway glass scraper, I've been using it for everything since I've got it.

Cleaning putty knives, cleaning plasterweld off tile, paint off glass, whatever. It's pretty damn nice. Just don't make any sharp turns with it and you're solid.

Amazon link for one if that's allowed:

EDIT: Kinda funny to see Goof Off here today, I spent the better part of my afternoon cleaning up after the other maintenance crew's sloppy work. They stained a floor and then painted the ceiling, getting paint everywhere. Fun stuff.

I used these window locks on all of my windows. They make them for sliding windows as well.

u/TheToolMan · 1 pointr/vegas

Any window retailer can order custom sizes. Also, have you considered some thing like this.

u/K6Panzer · 1 pointr/homedefense

If those little sliding window locks don't work maybe something like this? I guess you could screw it in at the top and just leave it.

u/XandalorZ · 1 pointr/battlestations

It's next to silent. Actually, the only thing I can hear from it is the hard drive motor, but I think the only reason why that happens is because I have both of them mounted to the bottom of the chassis.

There isn't much in the way of built in dust protection, but I bought a roll of fiberglass screen replacement and cut strips to cover each vent. Every other month I pull them out and clean them off.

Edit: Not sure why my formatting isn't working properly

It's real easy to do and actually looks pretty good. Make sure you get the application kit. Gila RTK500 Window Film Application Tool Kit, Complete https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002YXPITY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fX1Rzb03PRD9R

No problem, I'm happy to help, ambiguous packaging like this really annoys me.

EDIT:
OK I think I've solved this,

I looked on amazon.com and found curtain rings matching your pictures here It looks like they are nickel plated, and according to the Agency for toxic substances and Disease
>"The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that nickel metal may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen and that nickel compounds are known human carcinogens"

So in conclusion it appears that these rings are nickel plated and that since they are a moving part (i.e. curtains drawn repeatedly) there is a potential of creating Nickle dust which is considered by the OEHHA to be a carcinogen (which is why it has the warning).

My opinion on this matter is that you should return them or throw them away and get some wood or steel ones.

Thank you for the Gold whoever gave me it!

u/zombienoms · 1 pointr/cosplay

I have no idea what they are specifically or if there's a proper name/designation for them but looking at the picture I offer my best guesstimates as to what you could use as a solution

Clip rings: with these I figure maybe a small incision along the collar line that you stick them through so the clip "mouth" faces out (instead of the back part that's the V which could be hidden inside the coat or lining)

I know you said you didn't think it was a zipper but looking at the picture I think maybe you could use one? though you could take off the zipper slide
So just in case you go that way

In the world of zippers I also found these top pieces (which seem to be clips for the bottom/top of zippers to act as stoppers)
Size option A
Size option B These seem like you could get use out of them, they come in packs of 10 so buy a bunch and then I think you could clip them on tightly to the fabric)

Since all the things are silver you could I'm use just weather/paint them a bit to get the match to the brass/gold in the picture. Like I said I have no solid idea of what they are but best estimate as to how you could do it this is what I offer

Here in the US, we have [collapsible screens] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00133J0NG/ref=pd_aw_sim_86_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SG1PYE2QG32PCX5FQ84X) that we can pop into open windows. Unless a cat is particularly tenacious, this should be enough to keep them inside.

u/projectortime · 1 pointr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I used something like this when I didn't have AC in NYC in the summer. It slides into the window without any damage and is adjustable to width.

http://www.amazon.com/Thermwell-Products-AWS2445-24x25-45-Screen/dp/B00133F8VY/

For mosquitos, I would suggest not scratching (for me they seem to last longer when you do) and afterbite or a calming lotion applied regularly.

u/sky033 · 1 pointr/whatsthisbug

If you are just leaving the window open, and you don't have built in screen windows, try something like this -an adjustable window screen. Just make sure there are no gaps for them to crawl in. Be sure to check around for any other possible cracks or gaps they come thru and you should be ok. Be kind to your spider-bros and other predatory insects, [because they do what they can to help] (http://www.fishpondinfo.com/photos/other/arachnids/stinkspider.jpg). Just be glad your house isn't [covered with these buggers.] (http://hyg.ipm.illinois.edu/photos/brown_marmorated_stink_bug_house.jpg)

Any time you want to display something and protect it from UV just get something like this.

I'll tell you one that happened to me. A couple of years ago my friend and I decided to drive about an hour to a larger city near us on a whim. We thought it would be cool to walk around, visit a nice restaurant, etc and it really was. We had to take a different way back than the way we came and ended up getting a little lost. Long story short her tire blew out and we ended up almost crashing on our way to a patch of shoulder/grass. Luckily no one was hurt but picture two girls in heels, dressed like we were going to a fancy dinner, trying to figure out how to change or fix a tire. Her phone didn't have service and anyone I tried to call was already asleep (it was well after midnight). It was getting a little hopeless when all people did was honk at us as they passed by and we tried barefoot to change the tire. Finally someone pulled over and we got a little nervous because it was just a guy so I got my pepper spray out of my purse and put it in my coat pocket just in case (yep loser). The guy asked if we needed help. He quickly came over and told us that we needed to put a jack under the car before we tried changing the tire. We ended up not having one so he used the one from his car and with a lot of struggle told us that we probably wouldn't have been able to get the tire off by ourselves because it was rusted on. He explained that he had a sister around our age and it made him feel better to know there was a good guy helping out. It actually helped me out in the long run because about a year later I ended up getting 2 flats in one week! At least I knew the basics of how to change a tire those times.
Glad we both got tire help and thanks for the contest.
This is under $10

We used this to get paint off the sides of our tank (it was a craigslist purchase, think it was originally for glo-fish as it came with neon plastic plants & blue light and all sides but the front were painted black) and it was really effective.

u/Fog_xyz · 1 pointr/DIY

You can probably get away with this plus this.

u/Exaskryz · 0 pointsr/LifeProTips

You can go one step further. There are small portable/external (for lack of a better word) window screens that you can put a laptop on to elevate it and give even better ventilation underneath.

https://www.amazon.com/Marvin-AWS1033-Adjustable-Window-19-33in/dp/B0012RYGKU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1481058186&sr=8-2&keywords=adjustable+window+screen

10", 15", or 18" high on this particular amazon listing so you can fit it to your laptop's size.
