We did 2 things - we added UV reflective stickers like this. We also added bird feeders that suction to the window like this. It helped, but hasn't completely resolved it. Plants should also help slow them down. Finally, I went to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary not too long ago and they have installed these things that they really like and have prevented a lot of deaths. Cheap and easy to DIY - so we may try that next year.

u/SecretSnack · 13 pointsr/evilbuildings

There are transparent stickers that birds can see.

This is the pattern I use in my bathroom window. https://www.amazon.com/CottonColors-Decoration-Adhesive-Blocking-35-4x78-7/dp/B00KM4FW5W I like it cause it sorta makes it look like it’s always raining.

u/vodoun · 6 pointsr/InteriorDesign

I bought this for the front hall window and it looks amazing. Makes a rainbow on the wall every morning!

u/BurningPlaydoh · 5 pointsr/flashlight

>it looks like it throws just as far, if not even a little bit further. Maybe it's the CRI coming into play?

That's because the emitter area of the SST-20 is even smaller than that of the X-PL HI (even considering that the HI is dedomed).

Only other thing would be that warmer tints throw better since they scatter less through water in the air.

I use this on almost every light to smooth out the beam and make if floodier if I want: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A6CM9D8/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You just breathe on the lens and push it down and it'll stick. Removable at any time.

u/no-mad · 5 pointsr/InteriorDesign

Amazon has transparent window stickers. Here are two I like.

So in order to achieve the sunset look (and the pic really doesn't do it justice) I attached this:
Amposei White Frosted Non-Adhevise Privacy Window Glass Film for Bathroom Bedroom 17.7 by 78.7 inches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FLVKLR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_54AdzbAGZ3Y9N
as a background. I back light the background with a cheap clip on desk lamp clipped to the stand.

ditch the curtain and do something like this on the window

Its really simple if you get a window kit. You clean the window, spray it down with soapy water, then peel the clear film off the back of the window film (think peeling the white paper off sticky velcro) then use the squeegy to flatten out all the bubbles

You don't need a curtain by using this, and nobody can see it. Right away this will make the room feel larger cus you don't have a dark curtain in the way.

My next suggestion would be to find a crafty person who can sew and have them hem a shower curtain so it doesn't drag the floor.

The register in the floor could be replaced with a decorative metal version in stainless steel...and it would end up looking like a drain.

As for color, I think a nice light blue grey would work.

u/fridgetarian · 3 pointsr/InteriorDesign

Definitely...don't block out the only source of natural light. Something like this link plus some sheer curtains should make an attractive look that allows almost all the light in and maintains total privacy.

As others have said, look for daylight to warm (~3500-4500K) lights that aren't overhead to light the room in the evening.

edit/update: This just appeared on Slickdeals

u/GotMyOrangeCrush · 3 pointsr/homedefense

You could create a custom interior 'storm window' of 3/8" thick polycarbonate on the inside to back up the stained glass.

u/kateesaurus · 3 pointsr/houseplants

Just as a side note, I bought this last year and have really good success with it. Easy to apply and keeps the light coming into the bathroom without our neighbors seeing anybody naked.

You won't get to see the clouds, but the light will still come through.

u/TreasurerAlex · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I bought some frosted plastic wrap, and I'm gonna add some more lights.

Yep. I have this one that I like very much. But there are lots of options to find one you prefer.

u/CasualNerdAU · 2 pointsr/vandwellers

What about the perforated window wraps ? Used mostly for advertising but it's stealthy and cheap, wouldn't help at night when there's more light inside than out though.

Instead of hanging something, order some of the privacy paper (or mirrored) and put it on the inside of your windows. You can do it halfway up the windows if you don't want to totally cover them.

As far as this 'not seen from the street' business, I have to agree that I think you are misunderstanding what it means and your landlord probably misunderstood you when you asked about hanging curtains and assumed you would make holes in the walls.
Go outside and look at other apartments in your building. Or your neighbors buildings. Are their curtains or blinds? If yes, go put some in your apartment in a lightweight, sheer, but still concealing fabric with a tension rod and quit worrying so much.

This is my scape with just regular LED white lights on top. There's no lights behind the tank yet. In the future I want to add a yellowish light to mimic a sunset

Lemme get you a link to the film I bought. Simple spray water and apply

Personally black would look great too but this would help make your black angelfish pop

u/Rain_Walker · 2 pointsr/Septemberbumpers2017

You're so welcome. I'm glad you're feeling a little better.

Your concerns:

  • Rails on the stairs not holding baby gate - We can figure this one out. If you post a picture, between all of these brilliant ladies we can make this safe.

  • Tall dress/cabinets falling over - same goes. If you don't know how to secure these to the walls correctly, post a picture of what it is and where it's located and we will figure it out.

  • Radiators not being covered/expensive to cover - I'm not sure what the landlord is responsible for in this case. Does anyone else know the answer to that? If they are not responsible for keeping the radiators covered there's a few things we can do. Again, post pictures and we may need to get measurements to help you find a way to cover them safely. Or b) I can donate personalized meal/workout plans for donations to help you raise the money to get proper covers.

  • Stained glass window panes breaking/the lead that separates the panes - I'm not sure how this would work on stained glass (I assume it's textured?) but there are products like this to help with glass breaking: https://www.amazon.com/Protection-Security-ShatterGARD-BurglarGARD-Burglars/dp/B008MZMSA0 If that wouldn't work, there are other things we can do to temporarily cover up portions of the stained glass to keep it from getting damaged.

  • Forgetful about phone/misplacing it in case of an emergency - You get get an Amazon Echo with Dialpad integration. You could call out to Alexa to make a phone call for you in case you were to lose your phone/unable to use your hands.

Any other thoughts, ladies, on how to solve these?

We're military, too :-) I grew up in the Marine Corps and I married into the Army (though part of our agreement before getting married was that he was to get out asap). It's shitty that your mom isn't there for you in a way that's helpful. Remember, "No" is a complete sentence. You don't have time for nonsense anymore. You can say no and walk away. If she is actually causing you stress despite good communication, then I would just take a break from her until you feel ready to try again. If you do. Get rid of people who don't add value to your and your family unit's lives. You are so, so strong. I know it's hard, but it'll be worth it in the long run to make your lives less stressful.

What you're feeling is totally normal. It's hard to realize that we are all in fact, mortal. We aren't untouchable. It's fucking terrifying. It's bad enough when we realize it about ourselves but it's soul shattering when we realize it can happen to our kids.

Keep communicating with your husband. Lean on him. And on us. We got you. ;-)

I also used frosted privayc film for my bedroom. Lets in plenty of light. I got one like this because i liked how the pattern scattered the sunlight ( d-c-fix Self-Adhesive Window Film, Splinter, 17.71" x 78" Roll, 346-0166 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007B9PMSS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_.yxNAbQCNR8G6)

Its cheap and easy to install, but double check the kind you buy is removable.

u/argleblather · 2 pointsr/InteriorDesign

I would personally go with curtains on a tension rod, that's what I've done in apartments in the past. If you're not up for that, you could try putting up removable window tinting to block some of the glare.

u/NotYouDude · 2 pointsr/LosAngeles

Finding one that fits your window exactly is gonna be reallllllyyyyyyy hard. I have a much better idea - A window cling film:
https://www.amazon.com/Artscape-Magnolia-Window-Film-24/dp/B000Q3QWRG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1505931224&sr=8-2&keywords=stain+glass+window+cling

You won't be able to tell the difference unless you're close enough to see that it's flat and not made of different pieces. Good for a high out of reach window.

Also, super easy.

u/morgan_mayhem · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Congratulations on the new job!!!

You should try this Big Train Chai. It is like drinking Christmas. You can mix it with water, milk, or milk substitute. It's good for mornings or evenings. You can make it hot, cold, or blended! By far one of my favorite beverages (coming from a barista who has tried countless kinds over the last twelve years).

I would like one or two rolls of this decorative window film. My back door has windows that make me shiver every time I walk past it at night 😱, but it's too dark during the day with blinds, and curtains won't stay put! Same goes for my bathroom. Two small windows with plastic blinds. They need an upgrade badly! Edit: Look how pretty this reviewer's door turned out!

u/kmsilent · 1 pointr/PlantedTank

You know what I just realized? You need a background for your tank. Just go grab a bolt of fabric from the store, or maybe spray it with black plastidip. It'll look instantly way better.

EDIT: I used this stuff, it's awesome - https://www.amazon.com/Gila-PFW486-Privacy-Residential-Frosted/dp/B000CSN700 . You can put a light behind it and it diffuses nicely. https://www.reddit.com/r/PlantedTank/comments/5aj5o5/added_a_sun_to_my_tank/?st=j7queq6t&sh=d4ee2e95

u/feelingthis53 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I know that there are window films for normal windows and door panels, with and without designs, patterns, frosted, etc. If you type in "window privacy film" on Amazon you'll see a bunch. That would probably be a good start!

Example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HTGRXSY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qH1cBb0079G9E

u/orca9999 · 1 pointr/lifehacks

All these blinds and such are great points.

But I found a nice way to do so cheaper, without sacrificing the 'look' of the window.

I used the static film tints, not the glue ones and put them on my brightest windows, and the difference is HUGE.

[Here is an example on Amazon (click)] (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Magic-Insta-Cling-Jumbo/dp/B000EBKG9A/ref=sr_1_2/186-9252775-5158865?ie=UTF8&qid=1419201707&sr=8-2&keywords=window+tint+static+cling)

I took my time and really did it right and they still look great a few years later, but can be removed easily.

u/savorie · 1 pointr/WTF

I'm pretty sure this is just a vinyl window film made to look like stained glass.

Like so:
http://www.amazon.com/Artscape-01-0113-Magnolia-Window-24-by-36-Inch/dp/B000Q3QWRG

u/orange-blossom · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

Can you use door curtain panels like this?

I agree that privacy film would be the easiest option, and they make it in cute patterns: one | two. You can even go for a stained glass look: one | two | three.

u/Kaiakazai · 1 pointr/cosplayers

This link is silly but some mirrored film pulled tight between some thin black craft foam that has the mask itself you should get the iconic eye shape look I think. Have you hit up YouTube for some "how to make a Spiderman mask"? It may take a few videos before you fine the one you like.

Also buy more materials then you need and accept the first try or two won't look so great. I had to remake a lot of stuff before it looked kinda OK but I also suck at crafting things.

Nope. Just giving you a jumping off point. I use BDF EXS15 EXTERIOR Window Film Privacy and Sun Control Silver 15, Dark. This is totally not what you need, though.

u/lithaborn · 1 pointr/AskUK

Do this. Having a constant low heat throughout the house will warm it more efficiently than a two hour blast twice a day.

Alternatively, the three of you could invest in a £15 electric heater each and take the heating out of your landlord's hands.

Little tips and tricks would also include hanging blankets or quilt covers up at doorways to minimise draughts, making stews and slow roasting meat joints and casseroles will keep a heat source in your kitchen for hours at a time, invest in hot water bottles (if you go to Poundland, they have neck-shaped ones in the stores near me. Assuming it's a nationwide trend, your Poundland should have some), if you have a communal area, dump a load of fleece blankets in there to sit under, keep your curtains closed, ask your landlord if you can seal any window draughts with temporary plastic glazing...and get the hot drinks in and a toasted sandwich maker for hot cheap fast snacks.

We're a family of four in a three bed semi-detached and can very easily keep the place warm all month for £90 on top of our normal summertime usage, using electric alone. For how little heating he's letting you have on, he's takign the piss. We run a 1kw electric heater in the living room for appx 6 hours a day and a 400w halogen heater permanently on in the main hallway to keep the stairwell heated because there's a LOT of cold space there that keeps the entire house freezing if we don't heat it up.

Hey, I've been looking into frosted glass films and sheets, and was having trouble figuring out what would be appropriate or actually work. Here are some I found online:

So a slightly frosted window like this would be a bad idea? It wouldn't completely block out the sun, but would diffuse it

This is the stuff we used.

It will take 2 people to make a decent job of it, but once it's up you barely notice it's there.
