We have these. A combo seat belt cutter and window punch. My husband keeps his on his key ring. Mine is attached with a little zip tie to the rear view mirror. I’d just have to yank on it and the safety cover on the seat belt cutter comes right off. Chances are high I’ll never need it, but it makes me feel more secure.

In case anyone else is like me and has this horrible fear of burning, or perhaps one of drowning in your car, buy a car escape tool for peace of mind.

u/dangersandwich · 6 pointsr/AskEngineers

Sorry about that, but we do legitimately get spam from people who want to profit from Amazon affiliate links.

Been happening enough around the area to make me wonder if it's a good idea to start carrying around one of these escape tools

u/Mylaptopisburningme · 5 pointsr/dogs

I have one of these on my keyring: http://www.amazon.com/resqme-Original-Keychain-Escape-Tool/dp/B0042VTYSW/ref=sr_1_8?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1377798294&sr=1-8&keywords=seat+belt+cutter

Depending on the condition of a dog in a car, I would take the risk of breaking someones window before waiting for police.

I keep one zip-tied to the parking brake handle, so I can find it even if upside down in the dark.

Haha, I got it off of Amazon. It's not the most comfortable. I usually use a thin pillow as a backrest for longer sessions. Still, for the price, it does the job very well.

Looks like it's unavailable right now, but I paid around $47 for the chair when I bought it a month or so back.

Get something like this from Amazon

Add in some ibuprofen, and some tylenol packets you can find at a gas station and you should be set.

throw in a spare blanket, and some water for good measure.

u/Trishlovesdolphins · 3 pointsr/bigboobproblems

I was going to suggest these. I bought some and they're a life saver. The only problem is that they are plastic and eventually, the extreme temperatures (in my area anyway) make them brittle and the clasp will break... at least the type I had.

I did find that Graco makes the same clip I had, in metal. It's really made to hold extra belt for when a car seat goes in, but they're far more durable.

The plastic model I had.

You could have probably saved a few bucks at urgent care by getting an actual survival tool: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000BMWXZM

u/misrepresentedentity · 3 pointsr/HumansBeingBros

Because the need for this type of tool is far below the need to equip every car with one. You can always get one of these for your key ring. Here is a how to explaining it's uses.

u/foxleigh81 · 3 pointsr/preppers

So my car has a hidden compartment in the boot which is effectively my 'Get Home Bag', in it I have:

  • 4 litres of water
  • Some basic food supplies (nuts, granola, pop tarts)
  • A foldable shovel/axe/saw
  • A heavy 100% wool blanket
  • A breakdown kit (this one)
  • Playing cards (easy to get bored)
  • A torch/ USB power bank which is always fully charged
  • A weatherproof jacket
  • A change of clothes
  • A heavy-duty umbrella
  • An empty backpack to shove stuff into if I need to abandon my car

In winter, I add the extra to my car:

  • My hiking boots
  • A heavy-duty pair of gloves
  • A woollen hat
  • A woollen scarf
  • Heat pads (the ones you crack and they get hot)

This year we've also decided to replace our gas-powered fireplace with a wood-burning stove in order to make our first real step to being able to survive off-grid. This is going to be done in the next couple of months and we can't wait.

Not sure where you are, but in the US and many countries I've been in you can buy them in auto stores or even places like Target or Walmart in the automobile department. They often come in 3-packs labeled as "Emergency Safety Flares" or something like that. Look like little sticks of dynamite! Once you remove the cap and ignite them they keep burning for 5-minutes, 10-minutes, whatever they are rated for. Be very careful not to get burned by the flaming substance on the tip. Just carefully push it into the hole and cover it with some sod or a shovel of dirt. It should do the trick!

EDIT: Just thinking... if you have never used a flare before, it might be wise (fun?) to ignite a practice flare during the day first, just to see how they work... before you launch your night-time attack, hehe. Note, they can be kind of smokey.

EDIT AGAIN: Just checked Amazon for you... and no more real flares? All LED stuff now? I still have some real old fashioned ones, but geez, can an adult not have any fun in this world anymore? Feeling a bit stupid now. Let me keep looking. Anybody else know where to get real flares these days?

FINALLY: Took some digging but I guess you can still get them: https://www.amazon.com/Orion-Safety-Products-3153-08-Minute/dp/B000LNQKGE/

Good swap! Must be so much fun to pile 3 friends in there! You will find they are a bit hard on the spine unless you wear a hoodie or eventually scoop up the pads that go with them.

I had a tomberlin crossfire I bought THESE SEATS FOR and ended up having to stretch my frame out 4 inches on each side to allow them to fit in along with continued access to the shifter.

Be careful on the knife with the glass breaker, I've tried a couple of those and they are not easy to use and some just plain don't work. Plus with the motion needed to use it and your hand being so close to the glass if it breaks, it can easily cut you. I'd use a spring loaded device (first link), a hammer (second link), or a piece of broken ceramic that you can get from breaking an old spark plug.

31.5 weeks and I haven't had any major episodes yet. I do feel the urge to cry at stupid things (but so far have managed to keep it together) or I'm unnecessarily snappy with people, but nothing really noteworthy.

I hope no one minds my saying this, but I think the stigma about pregnancy hormones is similar to the one about pregnancy diet. It's definitely a thing, but I don't think we're as out of control as we and others make us out to be. Maybe I've just been lucky not having it as bad as some unfortunate ladies!

edit: urge to cry today came from watching this product video.

A couple of years ago, I found a can of helmet specific cleaning product that shot foam out of a nozzle. Smelled nice and not overpowering, and was easy to use. I have no memory of where I bought it or what the brand was. I wish I had more.

Just FYI those seatbelt cutters are often too dull or not placed right to cut through belts, at least in my experience. And for a window punch I can't recommend this enough: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00768MLGK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YAvExbYMM2AHB
It's spring loaded so you don't have to actually punch through the window with your arm.

Dango Designs Gripper Mount
I’ve seen a lot of youtubers promote these and they actually are really good! I made a short vid with my hero7 on YouTube that shows off the camera angle here . I love it!

There is also the Pro Shot
People also really swear by these. The reason the dango is cool is that it clips onto your mouthpiece so there’s no Velcro or anything once you remove it.

u/flunky_the_majestic · 2 pointsr/Roadcam

I carry something like this for just such an occasion. From the shoulder of the road, it would be pretty easy to toss a few of these into the blocked lane for 100 yards back, to at least give traffic a clue to be aware in that lane.

u/OmniHito · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

I live in Chicago and use a HelmetLok

I haven't had any issues yet. I have the cable that goes with it and put it through my jacket sleeve and helmet and make sure the cord is visible. I understand it's not foolproof, but it's a good deterrent. Of note, I use it when I park for concerts and music festivals, so where there is a LOT of foot traffic and to date after 3 years of usage, nothing has been taken.

u/way_down_sloth · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

Honestly I don't recommend it unless you're... narrow. The thigh bolsters are VERY firm.

u/MyLittleGrowRoom · 1 pointr/IdiotsFightingThings

By the edges they mean the actual edges themselves, not the far end of the glass.

However, the key to breaking tempered glass like this is to have a point on the thing you're hitting it with. This way when it hits it forms a crack to get the breaking started. That's why those emergency hammers are so small, yet effective.

If you were looking to spend a little more then the YI Action Camera works pretty good. I personally use it on the trails and it works well.

Along with the camera I would get the Proshot Helmet Mount System if it works with your helmet. I also use this on the trails and it hasn't moved at all since I put it on due to the heavy-duty velcro they use (I've also crashed a couple times while it was on and it hasn't budged). The chin mount also has no wind resistance, so when going fast speeds your head wouldn't get pulled to a side and branches wouldn't knock it off your helmet.

A Sandisk Extreme MicroSD is what I use and it is fast enough to do 1080p 60fps.

Overall this would cost you ~$140 for all three items. The camera also comes with a free battery offer on amazon so you would have two batteries to get you through a couple riding sessions. (Each battery lasts a little more than an hour)

Here is some footage at 1080p 60fps

As for the phobia of driving into water and not being able to get the seat belt off you should buy one of these. They are very easy to use, cheap, and simply place it in your glove compartment. They even come with one that comes on a key chain. Solve your phobia, save money from tickets, and give you the responsibility to help break your habit.

Edit: Here's the key chain one

u/queenannechick · 1 pointr/IdiotsInCars

I drive over a bridge a lot and drivers here are dumb as hell so I've definitely researched it. You need to wait until water stops coming in to the car so the pressure is equalized. To speed this up, roll down the window or use a rescue hammer. You won't be able to break the windshield with a hammer. Its much stronger than side windows. Once water stops coming in, you'll be able to open the door (before that the pressure is too strong), take a deep breath and open the door. The air in your lungs will propel you up. Hopefully, you know how to swim.

They make window hammers for this reason. I have one super-velcro to my door. It also theoretically cuts the seatbelt if I can't unbuckle for some reason.

Some of the things I've gotten that have made my life a little easier.

  • 12v 2-way splitter for the truck
  • Small Moleskine notebook (I write down addresses, run numbers, pertinent info because we do not have an MDT in our trucks)
  • Slim Wallet (I don't carry a purse to work and I will transfer my debit card, ID, and keep all my licenses in the wallet I linked, great for keeping in a pocket while at work. As a bonus, the company who makes the one I linked is from the city I live in.)
  • Window Punch These are pretty nice, not many places non-fire around here provide them on the trucks and they come in very handy if you need access and have beaten fire to the scene. I prefer these over the pen style.
  • Key Holder Good if she has a lot of different keys, some places still use keys to access their narcs, different parts of the building, etc.
  • Bluetooth Transmitter/Charger I have a new iPhone that does not have an aux port, these work great on our ambulances and have two fast charge ports to charge whatever you need. I use the splitter above to plug this and my GPS/Dashcam in.
  • Snack Subscription These are pretty cool a bit pricey in the long run though. Get pretty good/healthy snacks monthly with various price plans. Cuts back on the urge to grab that candy at the gas station if you have something better in your bag already.
  • Rite in the Rain Notebook Just ordered these and they haven't come in yet, they are awesome for onscene quick notes. Since we've moved to EPCR software I find that on really sick patients that we need to move and work on I still manage to keep physical notes which get shredded after the run is finished and it's transcribed to the computer. We use a normal flip book but these help organize things a little bit more, plus they're waterproof. Supposedly works best with their pens or just a normal pencil. Was a neat product I thought I'd try out and go from there. Also don't have to get the EMS version, plenty of other versions/styles to choose from.

I'm sure there are more and I'll come back and add them as I can think of them, these are some of the non-medical quality of life items I add to my every day to make things more bearable.
u/MightyBundleofSticks · 1 pointr/LandCruisers

Okay so you're looking for a seatbelt that didn't necessarily come with the 80 series but you want one that will work like a newer model car?

Sounds like you want an ALR type belt: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/lockincss.aspx

They never really offered those types until 1996. (http://www.cpsboard.org/pdf/techmanual/StudentManual_R1010_Ch5.pdf) When it became mandatory for passenger seatbelts to have them, You could try going to a yard to find one just make sure the cruiser is like a 97, I cant really find anything that shows the seperation of seatbelts for purchase.

They make locking clips for seat belts that don't have a ratcheting feature, but keeps them tight. http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Seat-Belt-Locking-Clip/dp/B004XJ0EF0

u/lemon_tea · 1 pointr/LandCruisers

Buy a seat belt locking clip for each of your car seats. I have an '89 FJ62 - same belts as you in the rear and I have two in car seats. These clips are designed to pinch the seat belt near the buckle and force the buckle to hold fast. In the event of an accident the normal locking mechanism in the belt will engage and, together with the locking clip, hold the car seat fast.

I would say it’s a window punch then. Something like this

I’m not sure if the window would remain held together for that long (based on description) but it’s possible.

Just watched the video. I’m wrong, OP is probably right but I have no idea how. Can’t find any examples.

u/PM-me-your-vehicles · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Used to do chin, but it blocked the front air vent too much which sucks in my hot climate.

Got a side mount and it works great, I dont feel anything weird even at high speeds.

If you do go chin mount, there are some that are essentially a giant V shape, with the legs of the V being flexible and they stick to the sides of the helmet. That should work on anything imo. Example

These are pretty cool: Helmetlok HelmetLok II Lock - Black Rubberized https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BLPS29E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_UV79jJTCXjntF

I keep it in my side bag in case I do want to leave my helmet with the bike. I'll put my helmet over my sissy bar, and secure the helmet to it using that. My sissy bar does not come off easy either. You'd have to jack the bike, drop the tire, get a wrench on one side and an allen on the other. Not a quick thing... Anyway, the lock comes with a metal t-bar that goes through your d-rings. Not the best solution in the world... But aside from having a lock box on your bike (something the big baggers would have), not sure what else you could do. I usually take mine with TBH. A $400 helmet is too expensive to have stolen. When possible, carry it with you.

Got one of these in my boot -

AA breakdown and safety kit plus

Contains most of what you’ll need you need and has Velcro pads so sticks to your boot floor and side.
I also have a boot organiser on the other side with essential fluids in plus a bottle of drinking water I replace every so often. Add some of the other stuff people have mentioned as you see fit.

Something like this?

u/MooseOnTehLoose · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

When I'm playing Elite I don't sit at my desk, I don't find it comfortable to use my hotas setup from a desk position, especially the pedals. This is my current flight setup to give you an idea of why a keyboard doesn't work so well: https://imgur.com/4z8nWRV Without a reference position for the keyboard, its not a reliable input method for me.

Of course I still use a keyboard for text input, but there are other issues with using keyboard buttons as shortcuts. The main difference between my controller and a keyboard is that Elite treats these inputs very differently. Any text box can steal focus on a keyboard key. If you're trying to perform an action and look at a text box while performing that action, there's a good chance you'll just start typing into that text box instead. That was one of the first changes I made, switching the cherry mx keys on the controller from "keyboard" to "joystick" inputs so that I don't have this issue any more. Of course since every key is programmable you could set them individually as joystick or keyboard keys, or as a macro key.

I'm going to switch from the current setup to a custom built solution using one of those cheap "racing car seats" on amazon so its easier to adjust recline and seat position: https://www.amazon.com/Reclinable-Type-7-Racing-Adjustable-Slider/dp/B0116D7DCW/ref=sr_1_49?keywords=racing+car+seat&qid=1567091518&s=gateway&sr=8-49
