Agreed. The hole was probably drilled behind the drywall with one of these.
If it's a vent pipe rather than a drain, it probably went completely unnoticed until renovations required opening the wall again.
You need this in your life: https://www.amazon.com/Werkzeug-Stripped-Extractor-All-Purpose-Extension/dp/B07VFM3Q5Y
If I was building from scratch, I'd use a keyhole bit on a router table. If I was trying to hide the screw holes that are already there, I'd counter sink the screws a little deeper, make plugs using a plug cutter like this, and then leave a little pin hole so that you could pop them back out if I ever needed to take the rack down.
You want one of these, too: https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-53715SEN-Flex-Placement/dp/B00D3QPTZO
Use nice drill bits inside one of these to help get it centered : https://www.amazon.com/Snappy-Centering-Spring-Loaded-Proudly/dp/B0014A454M

These seem to get pretty good reviews from a bunch of frustrated people
The Blum Ecodrill is awesome to use. Its paid for itself many times over for me.
Yeah the army painter drill is just a pin vice drill from the looks of it which is the kind used for magnetizing models.
This here is a set of 100 magnets and a matching size drill bit that I used to magnetize my smaller minis.
Stripped screw remover kit.

Lowes, Home Depot...or almost any local hardware will have one too if you don't want to wait for online ordering.
I have a stripped screw remover for these situations.

They bite into the metal and remove the screw. Slightly safer than drilling out the screw... but still some potential to damage the device if done wrong.
Good luck!
Alternatively, you could get a roto zip bit. This turns your drill in to an (admittedly hard to control) router and will let you do holes of any shape or size in thin plywood. http://www.amazon.com/Roto-SC4-8-Inch-Plastic-4-Pack/dp/B004NSKWDU
As others have said, the hole size you need will depend on what type of bird you're hoping to attract to the birdhouse. According to the RSPB guide here you'll need a hole that is somewhere in the range of 25mm to 45mm.
You could get a 25mm spade bit for only a few pounds. Or if you want more flexibility you could get an adjustable bit like this, which will allow you cut a hole from 22mm to 76mm.
No worries if they are metal studs. Just find the center of the stud and go through it with a step bit, pop in some toggle bolts and secure the bracket to the wall with the provided screws
I'm in the same boat! Agree with the consensus that it's not critical for every model all the time, but definitely things like carnifexes that just have so many options. I went with this Amazon listing.
MagNetSol Magnets Combo Pack Miniatures (Qty 300 Magnets - 3 sizes, 3 Drill Bits) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NHMCR9F/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_Kp0TDbQQB6TRJ

Im using these. The bit is kinda trash, but it works. Pro tip: make sure all of them are facing the same direction on the model! I didnt and it makes getting the right loadout difficult.

The 1/16" are good for sticking small weapons (stealth, crisis suit, etc) to suit arms and nacelles, while the 1/8" are better for heavier stuff like hatches, Hammerhead and other tank weapons, seeker missiles and drones.
You need a damaged screw extractor. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Werkzeug-Stripped-Extractor-All-Purpose-Extension/dp/B07VFM3Q5Y
I haven't used that set personally, so I can't speak to their quality, but they are well reviewed and go pretty small.
I also use 1/16" magnets for the subsytems, if you feel like magnetizing those.

harbor freight will have it or any hardware store just ask for screw extractor might be cheaper on amazon
If you wish to do it like a professional use a flexible drill bit with this tool then use poles to fish.

Pretty sure this was the combo I used for my furioso dred. It comes with the bit. You will want a pin vise to go with it. I've drilled holes without one (and it can be done) but it can lead to some rather nasty chunks being dug out of your hands if you aren't careful. Life is much better with the vise.

I also use a lot of the 1/8 x 1/16 for infantry arms.
Look for diamond drill bits, there are some inexpensive ones on Amazon. I don't know this brand but these seem pretty versatile and inexpensive. https://www.amazon.com/10pc-Diamond-Tipped-Drill-Bit-x/dp/B005NISFQA
How about a really long auger bit and a drill-guide with bushing? The obvious question is how would the bushing hold up over such a long distance through wood?
[3/8 by 54 inch bit]

Drill guide
if you have a nice drill you could always get a long 1"-1.5" bit like this one and drill a bunch of holes deep in and then chip it out. many rental places will not rent you a chainsaw if you are using it to cut out a stump as dirt will instantly dull the chain, and dirt grit will get under the chain and ruin the bar.
Tapping into the brick is only tricky if you don't have one of these. Your plan sounds great if you want the awning to fall on someone and kill them.
This is what I have for drilling cable holes. The bit is flexible and comes with a tool that allows you to bend it while it's in the wall.
