There should be a lot more discussion on this topic. Bullets and beans don't mean anything if you can't dispose of waste in safe manner. My solution / thoughts below, and I live in a rural area but on a municipal system so this may or may not be as applicable.

For urine, pee in something like a bucket , or build a urinal that drains into a french drain. In general urine can be disposed of fairly easily. Gallons and gallons can go into a rather small area which you can cover later with dirt. Except for the fertilizer burn there's really no issues here. As others have noted keep the urine and solids separate.

For solid waste, relatively easy is:

  • a 5 gallon bucket (which you probably already have for storage).
  • a lid kit for the bucket.
  • some biodegradable bags that fit into the bucket. You can just clean out the bucket each time but this makes a little easier and you can just bury the whole bag.
  • some type of absorbing material to dry out the solid waste, and handle any urine that gets in there too. I have a pellet stove so I literally have tons of wood pellets which absorb a lot of water. Other good ideas are coir, sawdust, shredded cardboard, or kitty litter.

Regarding the municipal system, eventually it will back up, it's a question of time. Where I live it's a straight downhill shot to the municipal waste treatment center, no lift pumps required. The waste treatment facility has backup generators and overflow ponds so provided they can still operate things will work. Shit flows downhill, as it was.

In an extremely prolonged sort of situation where the crews weren't out doing maintenance or a large earthquake actually ruptured the pipes, things will back up. The folks at the bottom will experience it first.

You can install a backup prevention device. It has regular maintenance and the install could be easy (in the crawlspace) or terrible (you have to dig). If you're preparing for generalized disruptions it's probably overkill but if you're on a municipal system and want to isolate yourself, it's a good idea. /u/parametrek 's PDF post is terrific, that's something every prepper should have.

  • I recommend Arm and Hammer clumping Dust Free litter to start. The dust-free part is great and Arm&Hammer has a solid rep.

  • Keep plastic bags by the litter box (7$/Package of three hundred or so for the store bought and free if you use grocery store bags).

  • Clean litter box every time you see something in it. Multiple times per day.

  • I recommend Bissell Enzyme Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator product for smells. It even gets rid of unneutered cat smells, which are probably the worst cat smells that exist. - - Make sure cats are out of room when you spray it.

  • Vacuum once a week at minimum due to extra foot traffic from animals as well as hairs. I vacuum more though, whenever it looks like it could use it.

  • DO NOT leave wet food out after feeding. Feed enough that they eat what is there and put the rest away, like in a ziploc or something. Wet food can get really stinky when left out and attracts bugs like crazy. Don't even leave the dish it was on out.

  • Wash the water bowl every few days. Stagnant water causes smells and attracts bugs - it will also be healthier for your cat.

I appreciate cleanliness and have tried a bunch of stuff and this is what seems to work. I will often test for smells using other people just to make sure.

The specific odor eliminator I mentioned took a while to settle on and find something that actually works for cat smells. I went through a lot of that 'natural' bullshit and it was absolute failure every single time. I'm still salty about the wasted money and feel scammed.

The only cat litter that I know of is 'Sophisticat Pink'. They sell it in Pets at Home, sometimes buy one get one half price kind of deals. Looks like it is now called 'Sanicat' on the bag.

Can't do mobile links from pets at home website, but it is £12.50 a bag. This is the old branding: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00366WP80

Forgot to answer the other questions, yes you can just use it 100% as is out of the bag. For tiny trees I sieve out the smallest particles and use those. It is easier to pour it around the roots when the cat litter is dry and then water well. The first time you water, you can hear it fizzing. Water retention is not a problem at all, just make sure to use fertiliser most of the year as it is completely inert.

I store my extra substrate in our old cat litter jugs, like this one. Even if you can't find a way to keep it from drying out, it'll still be fine to use in a year. If you're buying Eco-complete, the only downside to allowing it to dry out is that it'll take longer to cycle the tank.

u/Double-Up · 4 pointsr/pics

It's not good. Go kick it around woth your scooper as much as your cat does then stick your face as close to it as your cat does and breath in. Then do it about 4 times a day. You could go a step further by then licking your hands like a cat does cleaning itself. The dust gets everywhere.

That's what your cat is breathing in.

A healthy cat is important so I recommend to avoid dry food and favor canned food (I personally decided against plastic pouches) or even homemade if you have the time to do it and make sure it is balanced for cats. I found this site very eye opening and I think it's a good read although you can see the author (Dr Pierson) focused on the content more than on the form but the points get across.

For litter, I'm using this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U0OVT1U?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details. It's a large amount of wood based litter in a cardboard box. I still use bags to clean the litter box though.

u/TehWeezle · 4 pointsr/ferrets

Long post, sorry!

Litter can be difficult. Some ferrets are rather picky with their litter and maybe don't like the smell of one kind, the feel of the other... In some cases ferrets have very sensitive respiratory problems so they can't use certain kinds of litters because it causes them issues breathing - this is ESPECIALLY true with most cat/clay based liters and these are DEFINITELY to be avoided - and other ferrets have allergies to certain wood typed liters (pine being especially common allergy). Litter is also important because you need to take into account the previous factors, as well as odor control (not only in the aspect of waste but some litters based on what they are made of can retain the ferrets oils making the odor of the ferret itself more prevalent), how easy it is to scoop, etc. I've tried a couple different kinds for this one, and the one I have listed is the be all-end all of litters for me, and I will never go back. I've used the Marshall's litter brand before, and it does well for odor control, but as for scooping - I always end up wasting so much because it can be difficult to not only determine whats clean and what's dirty but even after doing so singling out and only scooping the soiled litter. I tried another one made of of shaved newspapers, but it had a dusty residue which caused my ferret to sneeze, so I threw that out quickly. The Blue Buffalo in my opinion is perfect. Before I go anywhere else with this, I will say the one con of it is at first my ferrets dug in it because of it's consistency, however after about a week of using the bathroom in it and realizing it was for potty not for play, this problem went away (as an edit sidenote: making a digbox for the cage also helped immensly!). Now, the pros are MUCH more: First off, it's a clumping, sand like litter that makes scooping/sifting easy BUT without the dangerous dust aspect that other cat litters do because it is made of walnut shells. I have it from a fellow fuzzbutt owners' personal account that she has a fert that has serious respiratory problems - that is to say life threatening - with very sensitive lungs that uses this litter no problem. I also have a ferret that as I mention earlier sneezed and coughed with a litter and another with allergies but both use this one without any issues. Secondly, the odor control is perfect. It doesn't retain the oils of the ferrets as walnuts have natural oils in them so they basically psuedo-repel each other, and it clumps so well around the excrement that no potty odor gets out as well. I have friends and family come over who don't even know there are ferrets in the house until I tell them or they see them because they can't smell them - can't say the same about all ferret households ;p

Vinegar won't necessarily stop them from pooping/peeing in any corner - it will clean it away and get rid of smell, but short of actual potty training/blocking off corner by stacking books or something there, it is a corner to be pooped in.

Treats can be tricky, but they aren't really hard. Again, no sugars/carbs/plant matter (aka starch) should be used in their treats, so you should focus on things like freeze dried chicken livers or salmon, or even slamon oil. Again, if you're on a budget, some raw egg that has been beaten to mix egg whites with the yolk works well, and can be fed to them through a bottle while you hold them as a bonding exercise.

Hope some of this helps!

I've (51,M) been using a pee bottle in my tent since '98 when I read Up in the Air by Jon Krakaur (mountaineers use them because it's freezing outside the tent obvs.)

Pee bottle tips:

- Should be opaque! (nobody wants to see your pee—seriously, one year it was a real buzzkill as people kept walking through our camp on the way to the Portos carrying clear milk jugs full of their orange piss. Super gross.)

- I like these 20lb. cat litter jugs — the wide mouth and handle are ergonomically designed for this use (for dudes, at least). Here's the cheapest opaque version on Amazon:

- practice at home and use caution in your tent — an untimely spill can put a real damper on your Burn…

Allez, taxe chat pour me faire pardonner.

u/NotClever · 3 pointsr/funny

I have this PetSafe one. It's kindof infomercially, but it works quite well. I've never had the rake get stuck or mess up or anything. There is kindof a weird thing where the little lid that covers up the poop-holding compartment sometimes will get stuck open, but I can't figure out if that's a design flaw or if my toddlers are messing with it. It could even be the cat messing with it (he likes to clean his paws after using the litter box by rubbing them really hard on the sides of the box). Also, it doesn't make a big difference because the silica gel litter takes care of the odor well enough that I don't notice any difference in that.

The only catch is that you must use silica gel litter for it to work (clumping litters will fuck up the rake, I think). And the only issue with that is that stepping on tracked-out silica gel litter is one step below stepping on Legos. Otherwise, it contains odor very well.

On that note, their official refills are basically just cardboard boxes filled with silica gel litter (and lined with a liquid-impermeable material). I bought the reusable plastic liner along with the official litter packs and it's worked great. I initially was buying a different silica gel litter in larger bulk quantities to save a little money over using their official refills, but I never found a source that was that much cheaper than the official refills, and the convenience of (1) having the refills be measured out to a good amount to just dump in the box and go and (2) setting them up on Amazon Prime subscription is worth the premium to me.

u/muggleinthecupboard · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

You should try this cat litter instead, just do not pay that price for it. I spend less than five bucks at Walmart for this brand, and the entire bag lasts me a month, with no odors at all.

It seriously is nice to not have cat smell even after a fresh poop. I used to spend 40ish a month on premium cat litter that did not work nearly as well.

u/BeeBeeHunny · 2 pointsr/pics

Uhh, cheapest I can find on Amazon Prime. Also, it has horrible reviews.

u/alwayspickingupcrap · 2 pointsr/rheumatoid

If you have the resources, there are automated feeders that only need to be loaded every month or so HERE . Also automated litter boxes or lighter wood based litter that is easier to manage than the extremely heavy clay litter. And water dishes that self dispense HERE

I think a single adult cat would be easy and very therapeutic!

u/Kradchand · 2 pointsr/SiberianCats

I hate Worlds Best. My Siberian liked it, but it got stuck to his butt and legs, so he left pee stains all over our apartment. I also think Worlds Best stinks as f***.

So we have had Soft Cat for 10 months right now and it works great. We have a litterbox in the bedroom and the living room, and there is never any odour (exept for poop smell for a minute or so sometimes). Seems like it is called SmartCat in the US. It clumps, smells almost nothing, just a hint of wood. It is a bit on the lighter side, so if your cat likes to jump out of the litterbox, some of the clean sand will fly out, but the litter can be recycled at least. I clean the box everyday (who wants to take a shit in a used toilet?) 600 sq ft apartment. http://www.amazon.com/SmartCat-Natural-Clumping-Litter-10-Pound/dp/B00LN70DZ6/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

u/samdeed · 2 pointsr/Pets

When I lived in an 850 sq ft condo, I put the litter box in a closet I didn't use. Worked great because I could close the door far enough to keep the smell inside, but open enough for them to get in/out.

Tip: Get litter that is dust free. If the container says it's dust free, go to Amazon or another site w/customer reviews and see if reviewers agree that it really is. I bought some that claimed to be 99% dust free from Costco, but it left dust everywhere. I ended up buying this grass-based litter from Amazon that has worked really well.

Also, get a Litter Genie or Litter Locker to put the waste in. They are airtight so you won't smell anything.

u/sml-ktchn-vgn · 2 pointsr/hoarding

Also, I don't know where you live, or what cat litter you use, but I use this cat litter and it is awesome at controlling odor, and has super strong clumps. There's no smell. Like none. It's also pretty cheap here and it works better than the premium Ultimate Care version of this same brand.

Here are three products that I find to be invaluable in my life as a cat lady:

FURminator: This little tool removes so much hair, you'd think you could make another cat out of it. It's really useful during shedding season. They make them in various sizes for long and short-haired cats, as well as for dogs.

SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post: This post is very solid and sturdy, which is great, since my cats like to launch themselves at it after running full speed from the other side of the house. If it were to be knocked over, they would freak out and never use it again. We've had it for three years with two cats that have all their claws, and it's still in great shape.

World's Best Cat Litter: This corn-based litter is more expensive than its clay-based counterparts, but it has many advantages: 1) It's not harmful to your cats if they ingest it--this can happen during grooming, or if your cat just randomly eats it. Same goes for kids. 2) It generates much less dust and offers good odor control. 3) In my own anecdotal experience, it lasts longer. 4) It's flushable, which is especially nice if you live in a small apartment (but I don't recommend flushing from a sub-level toilet that uses an ejection pump--learned that the hard way). 5) It's better from an environmental standpoint, since the clay for litter is gathered via strip mining.

u/PJsAreComfy · 2 pointsr/Pets

Maybe get a bigger ferret litter box so if the cats use it it'll work? There are higher walled boxes with low entrances like these: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Or if the ferret's smaller than the cats maybe enclose it so the entrance is big enough for a ferret but not a cat.

u/ToySpyder · 2 pointsr/cats

Scooter is a litter-thrower and a tracker so I bought a high sided litter box and no track mat. Works like a charm!

Feline Pine Platinum Natural Pine Original Non-Clumping Cat Litter, with Baking Soda, 40 lb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NPHGL79/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XP2JDbGKPF2YA

That is what I use. I'm personally pretty lazy at times when I have a long work week and this is very easy to clean and masks smell very well. It also doesn't make a huge mess and when some does make it to the floor it is very easy to clean. I have 3 cats and they don't make much of a mess so I can imagine that a single cat would make even less of a mess. To save money you could buy this type of litter as natural pine bedding at hardware or barn stores but I prefer just to pay more for the amazon subscribe and save thing. Another benefit I have found with using pine litter is when you go to change it the bags are significantly lighter and don't rip and spill litter everywhere.

u/I_must_be_a_mermaid · 1 pointr/confession

It does!

The litter you have isn't available on Amazon prime which means shipping times will be really long. But I did find this one which is also lightweight and might be easier for you to manage

Edit to say: If you agree please add to your list :)

One of my cats used to miss the box a lot too. He pees like 8 inches high, it's insane. I ended up buying the pet genie litter box and he's only had like 4 accidents in the past 6 months: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07FDHBM5N?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

It's like an over glorified laundry basket, but the walls sit up high, and the box bends to make litter easy cleaning (I use non clumping pine litter after using clumping litter for years, so this makes it easier to dump the litter).

The other replies had some great suggestions too.

You said she's a big girl, if she is having problems stepping high or into the box, perhaps a very low, shallow and large box would work better. Depends how she pees.

u/mks113 · 1 pointr/Justrolledintotheshop

FYI, Silica gel cat litter is readily available and works better than rice at absorbing moisture.

I've seen lots of discussion on the overall effectiveness of drying out your phone, but if you are going to do it, this is the right tool.

u/voteferpedro · 1 pointr/AnimalsBeingJerks

It's probably the Corn cob stuff. that stuff is 100% flushable and safe for septic. Wouldn't wanna dump a ton in there but bits here and there should be fine.

u/greenavocado2000 · 1 pointr/cats

I had the same problem when I first got my kitten. She would stink up the whole bathroom where the litter box was.

After a lot of trial and error with boxes and litter brands, I found that getting a hooded box with a door flap and charcoal filter on top worked wonders (they sell them at PetCo and Target), as did the Arm and Hammer Clump and Seal litter (this one).

The previous litter I had been using (Walmart's Special Kitty Lightweight litter) wasn't covering her poops up very well so they'd smell for hours. The Arm and Hammer covers them up completely. However, you said urine smell is a bigger issue for you. I don't have that issue with my cat but I did notice that the Special Kitty litter was really, really good at absorbing urine (after she'd pee there'd only be a little dot of urine visible) but the Arm & Hammer litter isn't, so maybe Special Kitty would be a better bet for you.

I also struggled a long time finding the perfect litter for my asthmatic cats. Everything I tried still had dust and they also refuse to try the newspaper pellets. I have been using SmartCat litter now and it’s been a god send! It is made of grass seed and clumps like clay but has zero dust. Like literally none. And I have tried so many “dust free” types including ones made of walnut shells that still were so dusty! Odor control is also excellent with the SmartCat litter. I have been using it now for a year without issue. I scoop twice a day and do a full litter change every two to three weeks. I order it from Amazon or Chewy.

Life-long multi-cat owner. I’ve used World’s Best for years, but very recently switched to this stuff (below) and it’s amazing. Best odor coverage and clumping ever. Not cheap, but worth it. Infinitely better than Tidy Cats and the like (gag me). Lasts well because it clumps so well.
