(Part 2) Best computer memory card adapters according to redditors

The SD lines are brought out to test pads on the bottom of the RPi Zero. You need to check continuity between those pads and the large SD socket you've got + check it is wired correctly. My guess is that the pins aren't making a good contact with the micro SD socket. You can buy these adapters already made for you though.

I have seen CF card to IDE adapters before. You could possibly get one of those in there. Is there anything keeping you from popping one of these open?

I just went through this nightmare.

My setup uses a Supermicro X9DRi-F that "DOES" support bifurcation.

so okay i figured out what i did wrong, and found that supermicro makes a simple dual nvme adapter that should work with bifuraction no problems! The part number is AOC-SLG3-2M2 https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SLG3-2M2.php

What i didn't notice is that the X9 boards are not under the supported list. But looking through the pdf manual and in my bios i find that it does support bifurcation.

Welp, i could never get it working. I looked through some sites that did custom bios but most of those guys were trying to Boot from NVMe, not just use them as additional drives.

So i gave up and am now using BOTH cards with 1 nvme ssd installed in each. If i were to do it again, if you can spare the extra pcie slot, just get 2 of the cheap nvme adapters and call it a day.

I also get a lot of notifications of nvme "overheating" so some heatsinks isn't a bad idea and also might want to turn the threshold for notifications up a bit. NVMe will be okay for a little bit at warmer temps. But the heatsinks are actually nice for extended loads.

No, probably not. I assume you are looking at one of those USB to PS2 mouse adapters. You can try it, but I doubt anything will happen. You might be better off getting a PCMCIA SD card adapter.

Does your laptop have a network connection? Access to the Internet? If so, you might be able to copy files to or from your laptop over the network, either via a local network share or something like Google Drive or Dropbox.

If none of those options are viable, you could pull the laptop's hard drive and transfer your files using an IDE to USB adapter and another computer.

Usb card reader. Also to find the kernel go to the website located on the R4 card, then make sure to find the proper version for your card, for example your card is an R4i 1.4, so find the proper download for an R4i 1.4.

This isn't micro SD for phones, best use for this is cameras, and only a few cameras.

As far as authentic hardware, get an 8088/286 or a 386 with a turbo button. Optionally there are some DOS utilities that purposely slow down the CPU for games that run too fast, such as MoSlo.

A lot of vintage DOS PC enthusiasts still use floppies, but since old hard drives are hard to find and expensive these days it seems like most people are using either Compact Flash-to-IDE adapters or homebrew hardware such as the XT CF Lite. Once you install the OS onto one of these you can just remove the CF card and copy whatever you want to it from a modern PC, then plug it right back in the old PC and be good to go.

I've been trying to archive all my old floppies to disk images because they're finally reaching the point where a lot of them are going bad, especially the 5.25" disks.

hard drive is too big. get a cf card big enough to hold your os and a pata to cf adapter. also, a clarkdale chip will be much better than your cpu choice.

I'm sorry, but the vast majority of DSLRs up to ~5DIII/IV level have SD slots or SD+CF. There are lots of keen amateurs and prosumers for whom SD is more than fine. Fair enough if you're a media pro toting a 1DX or Nikon D5 then you're on CF but as you say - at that stage a card-reader is likely to be the least of your concerns in amongst all of your other bags of gear and realistically CF cards are far too bulky to get native support on a laptop. But if Apple is "for creative people" then stripping out a card reader for the prevailing standard is really short sighted.

Moreover, (micro)SD is also the storage expansion media of choice for phones and a variety of other devices, and a microSD>SD adaptor is trivial to carry in a bag or even your wallet. This change torpedoes the Nifty Minidrives which were a handy alternative to Apple's expensive storage upgrades for bulk storage.

I don't really object to them moving to USB-C. Apple has always been ahead of the curve on connectivity - adopting USB early, Firewire, TB, and ditching floppy drives before anyone else.

But I disagree with their relentless stripping back of ports and I/O overall.

As I said - if Microsoft can find space for an SD slot on a Surface (nestled amongst bulky USB-A ports), Apple could have found space for one on the Macbook in the space they've saved by using tiny USB-C slots.

I dunno, just feels like Apple are abandoning pro users. Aperture was abandoned in favour of third party software (Lightroom, CaptureOne, Raw Therapee), which now leaves photo users entirely OS agnostic - I can mix and match on Windows or MacOS. FCPX was always controversial. And their hardware lines are converging on things like the Macbook (with no dedicated I/O at all).

I hate to say it, but MS have stolen a march with the Surface Pro and Surface Studio - Apple always said they wouldn't do a touch-screen iMac because the ergonomics of a touch-screen desktop simply don't work - but MS have made it work with clever hinges.

When did Apple last release a new product? The Macbooks have iterated to be slimmer/lighter but they haven't fundamentally innovated (that glass touch-strip thing doesn't really count). The iMacs have been pointlessly slimmed down (seriously, I can't see the depth when I'm sat in front of it. It's an all-in-one desktop. It's allowed to be bulkier). Bluetooth file transfer isn't a thing on iOS. I'm losing faith with Apple just as I lost faith with MS many years ago.

What MBP do you have? Because I just got one of these to expand my storage it sits flush in the SD slot so you don't notice it and read and write speeds are pretty fast.

Theirs also Onedrive I have heard good things about and if you are a student theirs a way to get 4 years for $99.

I’m using this one and my only real complaint is that SD cards can be a teeny bit wiggly in the slot. But I think it’s actually related to the specific type of SD card I’m using.

I bought this because I upgraded to an SSD and wanted some extra permanent storage. If you are interested in the measurement, a 23mm card seems to fit the best.

The OWC ones work well when they work. I've installed maybe 7 or 8 of them and had 1 failure after a few months. I've heard from other people who have installed many more that defect ratio is accurate. They have a good warranty policy if you bought direct from them, but it's a hassle and you really need to make sure you are diligent with keeping Time Machine backed up because when SSDs go, unlike hard drives, they are usually completely unrecoverable. There is no need to enable TRIM, since these drives have TRIM enabled by default.

It may not be the solution you're looking for but you can augment your internal storage with a short SD card that doesn't stick out of the side of your computer. You can put 2 microSD in it, I think I put 2 32gb in mine.

Don't get the PSPGo unless you have tiny hands. Anything over 15 minutes and my hands cramped up. I'd recommend a 2000. Many people love the 3000, but the interlacing really bothers me. You may not notice as much.

PSP is great for PS1 and PSP games. It's good for NES and Genesis, Neo-Geo and some 2d arcade. It's not good for SNES, N64, and more demanding arcade titles. So, if you want pure emulation and don't care too much about the PS1/PSP, you might be better off with some of the Android alternatives.

Not necessarily a new console, but a new SD card. The save data is tied to the SD card. This is the reason why it's kind of a big deal that the New 3DS will use Micro SD cards, because you'll have to switch to a new card. And I think Smash Bros isn't even the only game where the save data is tied to the SD card. Someone in another thread mentioned it's the same for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

One thing you could try out to future-proof your Smash Bros save data (if you're planning on buying the New 3DS) is to use a Micro SD card with an adapter like this. I'm not sure if the current-gen 3DS will be able to read that, but it might be worth a try.

Well, I meant two single NVME adapters, since there are three PCIe 3.0 slots on that board. GPU in the primary (x8), two NVME in the secondary(x4) and tertiary(x4), and it'll all work as well as it can.

That kind of adapter (which is the most common dual m.2 adapter I've seen), only has one nvme slot. The other m.2 is a sata connection, which needs a separate controller, thus the plug on the end.

If you can find a dual nvme to pcie x8 adapter, that will work, too, but just getting one nvme to pcie x4 (I like the ones in x16 form factor, like this, which I used in a z77 build) each time you get a new NVME will probably be cheaper and easier.

It's pretty bad, on par with a mid range laptop of a decade ago in short bursts, then gets slower when it hits power/temperature limits from being fanless.

For multiple tabs being slow, yep, this is your main limitation. Can't upgrade it though, it's soldered to the motherboard and there's no slot for expansion.

I have an MSI gaming laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 port. I didn't like constantly plugging/unplugging the USB sensors. I also wanted the ability to use my TV as the second screen instead of the laptop. That's much more fun for other people who may be watching.

I've got a 256GB MBP and I partitioned 125GB for Windows 10 for GW2 and Overwatch. No regrets at all since everything runs SO much better using Bootcamp, and yeah it sucks not having a ton of space but a cheap external hard drive or even better something like this will help a lot as long as you're okay with managing your large files.

I have a Mushkin Atlas Deluxe mSATA 120GB SSD with this adapter So i upgraded my motherboard and it didn't have mSata SSd slot. I ordered that adapter so it would access my SSD which has my OS on it. But all that shows up in the bios boot list is my hard drive. I cant figure out why my SSD wont show up.
