BARBARA! AAHHH!! Haha no I had my camera with me , thankfully. I shoot with a FujiFilm X100T. :)

And thank you guys! I’m definitely not the first to say RT has helped me through some tough days.

It's spot-on (if this OP isn't lying): Canon PowerShot SX60

u/DonTago · 18 pointsr/pics

Actually, this was a simple point-and-shoot Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS. They have some available HERE at Amazon. They are really nice simple cameras for casual use and take great photos.

u/HybridCamRev · 9 pointsr/videography

Yes, that's an expensive camera. You can put an entire 4K studio together for less. Here's how:

As an amateur photographer with a nice DSLR kit, that drives me insane. I remember showing some people at work this picture and that's all I heard, "Wow, your camera is AWESOME!!". Another guy said "Of course it a good picture, that's like a $2000 camera isn't it?"

I think on my next trip out scouting for streams I'll take my Powershot S90 instead. I'd like to see their faces when I tell them I took the pictures with point and shoot (albeit one with manual controls).

u/recaotcha · 5 pointsr/artemiskitten

A higher quality camera would make a massive difference, that and learning how to use it/lighting.

Something like a bridge camera might be your best bet because it's half way between a point and shoot and DSLR meaning it gives you a certain level of manual control but it's not as much as a pain in the ass as a fully manual camera.

Also the price point is a lot cheaper, something like the Canon Powershot SX60 would be a good option.

Its $450 which would put you in the range of an entry level DSLR

So something like a Canon SX530 or a Nikon Coolpix L340

might be a better option and more affordable.

> long battery life / replaceable batteries

Generally a DSLR will be your first choice here, since they tend to have longer battery life than mirrorless cameras do. Unfortunately, that makes the "not too bulky" proposition more difficult.

> weatherproof & rugged

Pentax tends to be the manufacturer of choice when it comes to weatherproof and rugged.

> under $500

The Pentax K-50 with 18-55mm weather-sealed lens goes for a little over $400. For about ~$100 more, you can add their 50-200mm weather-sealed lens into the package.

If you want something smaller than a DSLR, some mirrorless cameras are weather-sealed, like the Olympus OM-D E-M5 but unfortunately their weather-sealed lenses will probably blow past your budget unless you find an amazing deal. For point-and-shoots, the Olympus TG-4 is rugged, has a timelapse feature, and also comes in under budget, but I'm not familiar with its battery life.

Canon:

Canon S90 or S95 - S90 does 480p video, S95 does 720.

S90/95 was upgraded to the S100 which is currently regarded as the 'best' P&S fixed-lens camera out there.

Powershot G series, not listing them all...

Panasonic:

LX3 or LX5, LX5 has a lot of various tweaks that make it better than the LX3.

Samsung:

TL500/EX1 (regional naming) Worth noting that though not a 'big brand' camera, this one has an ultra-fast f1.8
Schneider lens, legendary optics.

Nikon:

P7000 or P7100, P7100 is pricey and afaik has no game changing changes compared to the P7000.

*Ricoh

GR Digital III and predecessors.

----

Personally, I'd go for a S100. If I wanted that extra partial stop faster lens, I'd go for the TL500, note that the canon has more zoom range.

I used to have a nikon, but I didn't like them that well. I've had 2 canons after that. I've loved them both. This is the new version of the camera I have.

I think you'd be fine with pretty much anything- make sure it has a good macro setting.

Take a piece of your jewelry with you to the store and take pictures with the different cameras you're looking at and see which one you like best.

Good luck!

u/nathanaz · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

We have this one and its pretty awesome - nice quality pictures and (so far) unbreakable.

u/dumbassthenes · 3 pointsr/surfing

I've had this Canon for a year or so, and it works great.

If you're looking to shoot surf photos from the water, it will not work. Look for used stuff, and get the camera and housing separate.

u/jseliger · 3 pointsr/photography

I'm still trying to figure out why the D50 and D70 are so similarly priced

Cameras appear to lose their value more slowly over time, and eventually reach about ~$200, which is about as low as you'll find a working dSLR.

So my question is would the extra $100 or so be worth it for the DSLR/Lens over the point and shoot or would the quality of the images be too little to notice the difference

Depends on what you're trying to do. A modern point and shoot will probably offer video and, possibly, better low-light performance in some circumstances. A DSLR with a 50mm prime will offer much better bokeh, decent low-light performance, better flash performance (if you buy a flash), and, probably, more manual controls (for, say, very long or very short shutter speeds), as well as manual focus (if that becomes important).

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably try to stretch for a Canon s95 or s90 (about $250 used or refurb'ed). But then, I value the portability; if you value the other features (especially the ability to produce bokeh in pictures of people), an older dSLR will serve you better.

u/truckerslife · 3 pointsr/Cameras

Until you get up close to the cost of a DSLR... an iPhone or Samsung I'd about on par quality wise.

Canon SX530 HS 9779B001 PowerShot https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RKNND2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IpFjzb12BXN0B. Point and shoot that is better than an iPhone or Samsung phone

Little over 100 more and you get

Nikon D3300 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Zoom Lens, Certified Refurbished, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZWSJBS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3qFjzb2WNXKFW. 100x better camera

u/krunchynoodlez · 3 pointsr/a6000

The kit lens can definitely fit, but depends on the jacket pocket. Typically if you're carrying it on the go, you want some flexibility with your gear, I'd go with the kit lens.

If you're looking into just a compact camera though and don't plan on buying any more lenses. Look into the Sony RX100 Line. Compact powerful cameras with a zoomable zeiss lens. Will definitely fit into any pocket. It also has a selfie friendly flip screen :D I recommend anything between the 3rd and newest edition so you get that flip out screen. It takes great pictures too!

u/ltredbeard · 3 pointsr/photography

If this is the same camera then I'd go with a mid-level Nikon or Canon.

For $100 more you can get a Nikon D5100. I have the 5100 and use it for night/star photography. Best choice I ever made. Even my local shop recommended Nikon for night photography. They said Nikon's noise cancellation was superior to Canon's, but I've never used a Canon so I don't know for sure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_T90

:(

The T90 is incompatible with EOS (The lens system on modern Canon cameras)

You can use an adapter, but it won't be as good.

If you're going to adapt lenses, I think the Nex system is best, because they have peak focusing which is fucking awesome. Other camera systems should get this in a few years... in fact they could get it from a firmware update tomorrow.. but for some reason nobody else is implementing it :(

With this adapter and a Nex 5 you could use your old FD lenses quite well... (Nex 5 is a slightly older model, the Nex 5N is the newest version, but it's not actually that much better, the old one is still good) it seems slightly out of your price range, but I see them on sale second hand quite often, so if you keep your eye out on craigslist/gumtree/etc. you could get lucky. Or you could just go for the Nex 3 (I think this would be best, since you should have some kit lenses with autofocus, manual is fun, but it's better to go out and take photos and not worry about fiddling around with manual lenses.....)

u/jam6618 · 3 pointsr/videography

Sony w/ the features you want, Panny with the features you want. Panny in your budget. This panny one is probably the only one at the price point with the features. It seemed kind of silly of you to be asking for a similar camera for less money and the g80 has only been out for 5 months, not quite long enough for many releases.

u/yesimalex · 3 pointsr/photography

Canon S95 can be had for around 250 I believe.

Oly E-p1 about 200 with lens

Sony Nex 3 about 350 ish

Fuji S4200 A bit cheaper still

Hard to narrow it down any with the only known criteria being sub 500 dollars. But the above are all (in my opinion) very good cameras for the money. I'm a fan of buying used because you can get a little bit more for your money since digital stuff just depreciates like crazy.

I think for an upgraded P&S the Nikon is a solid camera as well. You can nab it used for a pretty deep discount.

Thanks again for the response! That camera I linked for the #2 is really nice, and I'm agreeing with you it seems badass! But...

For the point and shoot, I decided to go with this sucker: Olympus TG-4 16 MP https://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Waterproof-Digital-Camera-3-Inch/dp/B00UKV5D4C/ref=sr_1_5?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1472719881&sr=1-5&keywords=Olympus+TG-4

The reason is that the person who is going to use it is very, very prone to dropping things. So that camera seems to have decent features + can handle some drops. So I think that'll work :)

For the #1, the Pentax K-70, maybe you could answer another question! I see on Amazon for $900 you can get the camera + 18-135mm lense, or you can buy just the camera for $650.

Do you think the extra $250 is right for the lense, or should I buy a seperate one instead for the same price?

The person will be using the camera to shoot buildings, city random things, some up close, some far, general stuff.

Many thanks!

u/paidaimai · 2 pointsr/photography

I'd consider the X10. I bought this and the X100 when I was in Asia. Didn't regret the decision at all. Portraits on the X10 (especially with the flash) really impressed me.

For P&S, I use the Sony HX9V
16MP, 1080P HD and 16x zoom. It's exactly the size of a pack of cigs. Great little "travel zoom", and you'll find a used one for about $150

Most people on here don't know that I have a disease I found out about last year that affects both my esophagus, stomach and overall health. When I found out about it I made the biggest significant changes in my life. First and foremost after smoking for almost 10 years I quit cold turkey and never looked back. I was also only a social drinker but decided to never drink again. The third change I had to make was to cut out foods that irritated this disease and lose weight. I hadnt been able to lose weight since having my first daughter because of a few significant medical issues including a broken jaw, sprained food, bruised hip, and the disease I'm talking about. Losing weight would not only make me feel better but minimize symptoms and make me feel better. Anyway, long story short, this disease was the reason my husband and I decided to have our 2nd baby sooner than later. Prior to getting pregnant I lost a decent amount of weight, gained minimal during my pregnancy (due to eating healthy), but here I am now.

Tomorrow I have my next endoscopy so this contest and start date are that much more significant to me. I'm continuing on the path I set for myself after I found out about this stupid thing. If its going to attack me I'm going to attack it from every direction. So I declare that I'm raging war on this thing and making myself better in all forms.

-food: I declare that over the coarse of the next 6 weeks I will be eating no fast food. I rarely eat it but I can count once or twice a week where I eat something absolutely horrible for me whether it be a hot dog or taco bell. I will try new foods and recipes that are healthy for me and my family or make variations to our classic recipes in order to be healthier. I will step it up with my healthy eating so that at least at the end of this challenge I will have formed a better habit for myself.

-stress and happiness: one of the things that affects me in a bad way is stress. something that makes me really happy is art. I declare that I'm going to produce one piece of art a day. Now you're thinking 'well hey cthulhu you just had your 2nd baby and this may be a big challenging with two little ones, two dogs, and a house to take care of'. I'm not setting myself up to fail here. I'm not expecting to paint the mona lisa. Whether its a doodle or a painting I will work on something every day. Also I will try meditation. I've tried it a couple of times without really following any direction but its something I think is worth giving another try to see if I can relax to hopefully rid myself of some unnecessary anxiety. Third, I will stop going from 0 to 60 in .2 seconds. I need to relax a bit and tell myself that its not worth being angry or unhappy.

-overall health: I couldn't work out while pregnant due to some complications. As of today I should've been able to start working out again but a couple of days ago my incision decided to re-open. So for now I need to follow doctors orders and take it easy. I really, really need to listen to this or I wont get better. For the first time in a long time I need to take it easy. This has never been easy for me. I wanted to start climbing stairs and doing laundry a couple days post op and I would've if I could have. I'm not sure if at all I will be able to work out during this challenge but if I do I'm going to start with some yoga and walking just to slowly build myself back up. Either way I'm going to make sure that I take my medication for my stomach daily. I have to take it a couple of times a day and occasionally I'll forget or it'll get late and I'll already be in bed and decide to skip it until the morning.

  • this is a song I always found motivating and inspirational

    I'm going to summon:

  • /u/G0atly - We can cheer each other on. You're amazing and I know we can really help each other.

  • /u/bunnylebowski1 - send me that meditation track! also help me keep calm

  • /u/KittenAnne - you're someone else who's great to talk to so kick my ass and keep me in check :D

u/Ask_Seek_Knock · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This camera is the most expensive thing on my list.

I actually added it today because our old camera stopped working and I keep forgetting to put it on my wish list so I remember to replace it. I found out the old one was broken when I went to take pics of my Abritrary Day Gift, I was a bit upset by that. I'll be okay if I never get it. I mean, Yes, having a camera is very nice for all of our projects, but I can always look up at Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

u/Zyper · 2 pointsr/photography

In that price range I like the Fuji X10 as a point in shoot mostly because of aesthetics to be honest. Canon G-series is usually the standard, however. Alex Majoli uses a Canon G9 if I remember correctly.

u/poops_mcgee · 2 pointsr/photography

The fuji is basically a compact camera in a slr-like body and not the best value. There are some decent bridge cameras similar to that one but they usually cost over $300.

If she only wants to spend $200, I'd recommend something like this Canon or something in the Panasonic Lumix line - possibly the FH25 or the ZS8.

If she shell out a little more money, there is a great deal on the terrific [Canon s95] - all my camera needs are taken care of and yet I am tempted to get one at that price.

u/idosillythings · 2 pointsr/photography

Hello everyone,

I'm going to be traveling to New Orleans this summer and I'm looking for a good travel camera.

As a photojournalist, I already own a couple high end DSLRs but have to admit that when it comes to "going down" in the build department I don't really know what I'm looking for, especially since I'm looking at mirrorless cameras with EVF, something that I've never worked with.

At the moment, I've found myself torn between the Olympus E-M10ii and the Fuji X100T.

The price of the Fuji is really the biggest thing stopping me from jumping in on that. But it seems to have a better viewfinder and better image quality. But the Olympus appears to be great for the price, but I'm curious how that M4/3 sensor will do when I want to get nice wide landscape shots.

Any ideas?

u/Pepperpwni · 2 pointsr/photography

Renting a good camera doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to get good pictures; how good you are with a camera and how much you are willing to learn are the most important factors. If you're looking into a DSLR then you need to take time to learn the camera and what settings to use when before you depart. Additionally, you'll probably need to get a better lens for it as well (whether renting or buying).

I guess what im trying to say is if you want a DSLR you need atleast a few weeks learning it + $1000 entry cost if purchasing, if you go for the low end model (Rebel XS body and, lets say, Tamron 18-270mm 3.5-6.2 VC Lens with rebate) and Understanding Exposure (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-3rd-Photographs-Camera/dp/0817439390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310284264&sr=8-1 ) is a highly recommended book for learning how to get started.

I don't know renting costs near you.

If you're looking for something less sophisticated but still want some power behind your punch look into something like the SX30IS (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-SX30IS-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B0041RSPR8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310284110&sr=8-1) or http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX130IS-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003ZSHNG8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1310284168&sr=8-10

u/eskachig · 2 pointsr/Deusex

It's kind of like when you put a filter on a camera with a non-interchangeable lens, like the X100 - it's a hell of a lot cheaper to replace a scratched up disposable filter than having to get a new camera.

u/Ballparkfrank17 · 2 pointsr/photography

Hey guys I'm planning on buying my first camera soon, but i don't know a lot about cameras. Im interested in getting a compact camera instead of a DSLR camera. I'm torn between the Samsung NX200! and the Fujifilm X10!. Both are on amazon and under $400. My question is which camera takes better pictures? Any feedback is appreciated!

u/XcentricOrbit · 2 pointsr/photography

Craigslist (or eBay, as others have suggested). You can find older DSLR bodies and kit lenses for around $200. I'm guessing a Canon EOS 20D or Digital Rebel XT. Maybe an XTi depending on prices in your area. In central Florida, I see 2 Rebel XTs for $200 or under; One of them is a great deal with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses AND an a Sunpak Flash (doesn't say what model) for $200.

I've seen some amazing deals on Craigslist. Two years ago, my dad got a Canon 40D with 3 lenses (one of which was a 28-135mm IS USM) for $400. The lens alone cost more than that new (and about a month later, he snagged one for me for about $200... again off of Craigslist). Some people just want to get rid of stuff, have no idea what its worth, or overestimate depreciation.

You don't have to buy a spiffy DSLR now, but if you can buy a cheap one with a couple lenses, you can still use the lenses when you finally are able to buy a spiffy new body (assuming you stick with the same platform, of course).

Just make sure you test out the camera and lenses before you hand over your money!

EDIT: If you just want a compact camera right now, check out the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS or SX150 IS. Both are under $200, and offer Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Full Manual controls, as well as manual focus. I'm not sure if they have a "bulb" mode on the shutter (i.e. - it stays open as long as you hold down the release), but the standard longest shutter speed is 30 seconds.

Here's a review of the SX130 IS, and one for the SX150 IS.

Bear in mind that most compacts with manual controls are really designed for ease-of-use in manual mode, so you may have a lot of looking at menus, holding 2 buttons down at the same time, or various other quirks when adjusting aperture and shutter speeds with most compacts that offer those features.

u/jaymzx0 · 2 pointsr/solareclipse

Awesome pic. I love sunspots - too bad there haven't been to many lately. As a ham radio operator, it hurts (limits long-distance radio contacts).

I bought a Canon SX530HS a few months ago on sale, currently $250 at Amazon. Here's a moon pic I took when I got it. ISO 100, F/6.5, 1/80 sec. It was racked out at 215mm or '50x' optical. I actually had to keep tweaking the tripod to keep the moon in frame since it was moving so quickly. I haven't tried with my SLR, but given the size of the sensors in these new cameras and the size of the lenses, I seriously doubt my 200mm lens would get anywhere near this level of magnification.

Now to see if I can find a filter or piece of viewing film that will fit over the lens!

u/RawPacket · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Looks like these are going for between $260-$350 on eBay. If you do sell it, you'll probably be looking to sell in that range, unless you're a good up-seller ;) Good luck on the choice/sell!

Good reviews on Amazon.

The shoe camera is just a cheap point and shoot (cheap as in ~$400). The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

Although I blurred the background since I had a personal e-mail account opened on the screen and my name was on there. So that post-effect Photoshop blur might make it look nicer because that is causing a possible faux Depth of Field look.

The main photo was taken in studio with a Canon EOS 70D ~$1000 for the body alone. Coworker took the photo as it's a camera for work. Although I do a lot of video, etc. in my free time as well. I'm likely buying the Panasonic GH3 soon.

u/stupid_horse · 2 pointsr/Cameras

Don't know what your budget is, but a Sony RX100 and maybe a Ricoh GR would fit in your pocket.

u/YellowOrange · 2 pointsr/rva

[FOR SALE]: Canon PowerShot SX30 IS - $100

It's a point and shoot camera with pretty awesome zoom, great condition. The screen does a nifty pop out/rotational thing so not only is it protected from scratches, but you can move it to pretty much any angle you need to take your shot, including selfies. Comes with battery (still good) and charger, and I could probably dig up the manual if I needed to.

Have a sampling of pictures taken on a Peru trip a couple of years ago with this very camera. It's done us well, but I picked up a mirrorless camera the wife's Christmas gift this year so we'd have something a little more compact to take hiking and whatnot, so it's time for this guy to go.

u/badjoke33 · 2 pointsr/promos

A nice Point and shoot camera so I can take photos of friends, family, and interesting things I see.

u/jamaicanbeercan · 2 pointsr/photography

Have a look at a Ricoh GR

I bought one because its a compact camera but its image quality rivals, or betters, the cameras similar to the ones you've listed comparison here

It has 16 megapixel, which it very good for a small camera, and it has a good sized APSc sensor. It has fast shutter speeds for a moving baby subject and it has a pop up flash.

u/jvanderh · 2 pointsr/photography

I posted awhile back about upgrading from a point and shoot to a used four thirds for food photography. You all were super helpful, and I'm looking to make a decision in the next few days, so I thought I'd ask again about the options I'm looking at. I'm basically looking for under $200, with a lens included in that. Amazon would be ideal, because I have a gift card.

I have a few different PENs in my cart (E-PM1, E-PL1, E-PL2, E-PL3) as well as a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 and a Sony Alpha Nex-3.

I'm not married to those models, they're just the ones I found in the price range. I'm especially wondering: would the increased resolution of the NEX be noticeable? And even though they're all four thirds, do some have bigger/better sensors than others? Any advice or alternate recommendations much appreciated.

Edit: I do care about it being able to do video.

If you have good lighting one of the cheap super zooms such as canon's SX50 or whatever the nikon/pentax equivalent is are ok for this sort of thing and would cost less than a lens for the A6000. I got my dad the SX50 for his birthday a few years ago and he's always emailing me nice pictures of the birds at his feeders.

search for birds on the amazon user reviews will give you a lot of folks with similar experience:

u/hamcake · 2 pointsr/photography

I've always had good experiences with Canon cameras. Even the point and shoots give you pretty good manual control.

The clincher for me is that the Canon has the 'wink timer' -- so when you wink at the camera, it starts the self timer :)

Even $300 is a small budget for a nice compact, at least by current standards. You'd need to look used. Image quality is first of all about the size of the sensor. The Canon S100/110/120 has a little larger than average sensor, definitely a step up from camera phones, and as mentioned can perhaps be had used starting under $150 (they're not available new). I would myself look at a used Fujifilm X10, which is a step up in quality and a delight to shoot with. It has an even larger sensor than the Canon and produces, like all Fujis, spectacular images right out of the camera. It also has a very fast lens for low-light photography. You can get those used off of Amazon Marketplace for about $250.

u/Fafoah · 2 pointsr/photography

The new Ricoh GR just came out at $800 if you want a camera that can still fit in your jeans pocket. Its pretty much the same size as your S100 (A tiny tiny bit bigger all around but still jeans pocket worthy), but it has an APSC sized sensor and a 28mm f/2.8 equiv lens. Seems like a perfect lens for Street, Landscapes, and Cityscapes.

u/SlopeDude · 1 pointr/photomarket

Yes it is!

u/seanprefect · 1 pointr/WhichCamera

I'mm sorry to say it you won't get anything better than a moderately recent phone camera for that range. better to save up.

At around 300 USD you can start getting something decent. You can buy an old Sony Nex 3 for around 300 USD new and probably less used.

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Digital-18-55mm-F3-5-5-6-Interchangeable/dp/B003MPOLX2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524840091&sr=8-3&keywords=sony+nex+3

That's a good beginner interchangeable lens camera, the kit lens gives you several options and you can build up your collection over time for more specialized lenses.

Newbie here. I am looking to purchase my first nice camera. I've done some research, but I'm a little overwhelmed with information and was hoping /r/photography could help me out. Feel free to call me Jon Snow, because I know absolutely nothing. ^((This is me trying to be funny...is it working?))

What I'm looking for:

I will be traveling abroad for a year, so I am looking for a great camera that is light weight, takes high quality pictures (Not grainy or super digitized looking), has high quality zoom, good battery life, and records decent videos. I want to be able to point and shoot, but also have manual features to play around with. Since I will be living in a very densely populated city, I would like a camera that is able to capture action with limited blur (so I'm thinking a camera with lots of shutter speed options). From my research, I think I would like to try my hand at a DSLR camera. My budget is $400.

So far, I've thought about purchasing The Canon PowerShot SX50, The Nikon D3200 with 1 lense, The Olympus 14-Megapixel 40x Optical-Zoom Digital Camera(SP-820), or The Sony a3000. Have you guys had any experiences with these cameras? What camera would you recommend for a traveling newbie?

u/blaurot · 1 pointr/photography

Would buying a Canon SX530 be a good idea? I like it because it's cheap and has great optical zoom (I like taking photos of birds).

A little background info: I'm a poor college student (redundant, of course) taking a beginners' level digital photography class. I'd love to turn it into a proper hobby, so maybe a DSLR would make more sense for when I'll want new lenses down the road, but I can't see myself being able to afford much for at least a few years.

Any advice would be appreciated.

u/Logical_Phallusy · 1 pointr/philmont

13 seconds, f/2.8, ISO 1600, 18.3mm (28mm equivalent). I wanted to use a longer exposure but my battery was on its last legs. I had to push the exposure 2-3 stops in post as a result. I shot this with a Ricoh GR.

u/down_view · 1 pointr/flyfishing

I have. Several years ago I was faced with a dilemma: lose a very big fish on the Dream Stream, or go in above my pack and drown my iPhone. So, when I bought my new phone I also purchased one of those Lifeproof cases and it didn't turn out to be as waterproof as advertised. Now I just keep it in a higher pocket and in a heavy duty zip lock bag (sometimes..usually not). I really wanted one of those Galaxy Sports, but my unlimited data is tied strictly to an iPhone, so until AT&T figures out how to get rid of us Grandfathered data hogs, I'm stuck.

Edit: This is the camera I'm going to get, for now

u/dreyesceron · 1 pointr/videography

It really depends on the type of video you shoot, what you intend to make out of it and create in the end.

The GH5 can do some excellent photography so it depends on how often you plan to use that side of what the GH5 offers.

The X1000 is sweet for outdoor video and sports but it's definitely less appealing on the Photo side with a bulky body like that.

I would also recommend looking at the FZ2500 and comparing that which features aspects of both the GH5 and X1000 at a lower cost such as the built-in ND filter, built-in zoom lens, V-LOG and 4K shooting at a smaller budget.

u/willseeya · 1 pointr/backpacking

I like to leave my DSLR at home also. I carry around a Canon Powershot SX150. Bought it off a friend and have been satisfied with the pictures I've taken. Here are some shots from a hike earlier this year.

u/p_s · 1 pointr/travel

That's exactly what I'm looking for - a simple point and shoot that's waterproof and will withstand occasional drops and such. This has been super helpful, thanks so much!

Also, just to make sure, this is the Canon you're talking about, right?

u/urza32725 · 1 pointr/pittsburgh

Canon PowerShot SX530 HS. It's a good little starter camera, step up from a point and shoot, lots of settings you can adjust manually if you want.

Haha, of all reddit of course you would be the only one to respond. Anyway, that does look pretty good. Getting some b-day money soon and grandma wants me to buy a camera with it.

EDIT: What do you think about this one?

u/acciocorinne · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Wow, you're being super generous right now!! Thank you so much for this, whoever you gift is so lucky <3 If reddit raffle chooses me I'd love a camera or this iPod (there's a used one from the Amazon warehouse for $110 with all the standard accessories)! Or seriously, whatever things from my expensive things wishlist you want to gift me--there's a bunch of $50 things, so two of those would be just as amazing.

Good luck on your 10k!!!! I'm training for my first ever 10k in August, you have to let me know how it goes! Girlsplaywow is a jerk (except not really)

Honestly, I've just taken my old Canon for the last three years, its never done me wrong, and it produces decent pictures.

u/IronFilm · 1 pointr/videography

The very small sensor of the FZ300 means too much of an image hit in my eyes. Personally I'd suggest the 1" sensor in the Panasonic FZ1000 or FZ2500 instead.

https://www.amazon.com/PANASONIC-Vario-ELMARIT-Megapixels-Sensitivity-DMC-FZ2500/dp/B01LX7JSPJ/

Especially for the Panasonic FZ1000 you can find a lot of bargains secondhand.

u/TygerWithAWhy · 1 pointr/videography

Sweet. Do you use it for still photography as well? Panasonic also makes a camera geared toward videotographers, the FZ2500. Is the G series of higher quality, or is it just preference?

That is the last of my questions. You have fulfilled more than I could ask :)

Now this is a bit higher up on the reasonably priced range, but I have recommended this camera to several of my friends and customers and they have all been pleased with it. 14.1 Megapixels, 12x zoom, 3' screen, still fits in your pocket, and has a manual mode for playing with more advanced techniques. The downside is that it takes 2 AA so a few sets of rechargeable batteries would be a must.

u/DoctorSteve · 1 pointr/photography

Not that I want a Sony, but what about something like this? What would you call it?

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cyber-shot-DSC-HX9V-Digital-Panorama/dp/B004HYFX0C

u/Zenn1nja · 1 pointr/photography

I personally use a nex-5n and it's great. the kit lens is a solid performer it just doesn't have many lens options right now. The fuji and gx1 are both solid performers. I would lean more towards the fuji personally. Also the Olympus xz-1 is a great little point and shoot with full manual controls, a great lens ( u can get a solid depth of field from it) and can be had for about $300. It also has a hot shoe so if u wanted to get an off cameras flash u could.

Edit: The x10 is on amazon for $420 here

u/TheForrester7k · 1 pointr/CampingandHiking

It's just a point and shoot. Sony DSC-HX9V. I'm a fan of the 16x zoom.

u/snuflswasmyslavename · 1 pointr/AskPhotography

I would suggest a high-quality compact camera like the RX100 line from Sony. The Mark III is $750. If you want to save money you can get the mark I for $450 (the III has a better lens). Don't get the mark II, it's an in-between model not worth the extra money.

Another outstanding camera is the Fuji X-T20 with 18-55mm kit lens for $999. The extra $250 over the RX100 M3 is worth for the excellent colors that come out of a Fuji (everybody is in love with them) and the ability to change lenses if you'll ever need to.

00You can also get the RX100 M1 for $250, RX100 M3 for $400, RX100 M6 for $900 and the X-T20 for $900 from Amazon Warehouse. They're open box items in very good condition, with Amazon's money back guarantee.

I have a sony alpha Nex-3 Camera from about 5 years ago. Somehow I've misplaced both batteries and the charger. Have been looking all over for them for months and have no clue if I forgot them somewhere or if the socks monster got 'em...but anyways...

Sony, of course, wants an absolutely ludicrous CAD120 for a single battery, no charger.

All the chinese knockoffs on amazon seem to have terrible reviews at best...Does anyone know of any reliable alternatives? Or am i just better buying a new camera?

u/starplaya · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I'll second the Sony RX100 suggestion. If that's out of your budget, here are some less expensive alternatives: the Sony DSC-HX9V or it's newer sibling the Sony DSC-HX50V. Also the Canon S100 or S110

u/steamwhistler · 1 pointr/photography

Hey guys, I'm guessing this question will be overlooked now, but if so I'll try posting in tomorrow's thread.

Anyway, I'm interested in getting myself an okay starter camera. I don't know much about photography, but I'd like to learn. I'd also just like a decent camera of my own to take with me if I travel in the next few years. In the meantime, I'd love to be able to take some really nice pictures of, well, my cat. And my family, I guess. Right now I'm really interested in the Nikon L330, because a local shop is selling their display model for $150 Canadian, (where I'm located, eh?) which suits my budget well and seems to be a great price. My budget is basically under $200 CAD, but assume I can get a pretty good deal of at least 25% off.

Main question is: does the Nikon L330 qualify as a "superzoom" that's warned against in your buyer's guide? And even if it is a bad superzoom, might it be worth it anyway if I can grab it for $150? It's listed as a top-seller on Amazon and people seem to love it. If I should really stay away from the L330, what should I be looking at instead?

Thanks!

u/bfplayerandroid · 1 pointr/photography

Hello, I am looking to buy my first real camera. My intentions are for just general photography and backyard wild life. I dont have a specific budget per say, I am more looking into the appropriate camera without over buying for my needs.

As an example, my sister in law has this [camera] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009B0MZ1M/ref=psdc_330405011_t1_B00M0QVTOS) which works really well for her, and when I have tried it, it worked well enough. It did feel a little slow when taking pictures, but that could have been the resolution she has it set for.

My main focus will be family pictures and some birds in the backyard my phone cant quite focus on.

If i can get away with a $200 camera i'd be more than happy, but if say, a $300 camera would be leaps and bounds better, im open to that.

I was thinking about this one and wanted to check here first before I made a purchase

I do not want to spent >$500.

u/CockEyedPierce · 1 pointr/videography

This looks like it might be slightly overkill for my needs (960fps max). But at $698 new, we are getting closer to an affordable amount.

Is there another model, perhaps, that would be more affordable with a lower max fps?

Thank you for the suggestion, by the way. This is my top choice at the moment.

What about a bridge type camera? Has look and feel of a dslr but is point and shoot. Not expensive like dslr and is easier to use but has features if she does actually get into it more than you anticipate.

I'm a Canon girl when it comes to cameras. I have a Canon PowerShot SX130IS which is a few years old already, but I love it! I think they are up to 170 in that series by now.

I bought that because I wanted something with a big zoom, that wasn't an SLR so I could still take it into concerts. It wasn't very expensive (I think I paid $150 for it at the time) and it takes AA batteries, which I like because if my battery dies I can easily find more.

As for polish pictures, I just use my Galaxy S5 camera.

The Canon Powershot D10 is a great camera. I've had one for a year or so, and we use it as our every-day point and shoot. It's done quite a bit of water work. Mostly kids in the pool or the lake. I don't dive but it's rated to 33 ft. The hinges/seals are good quality, you just have to keep them free of grit.

The only thing I don't like about it is the video mode is SD, not HD, and video doesn't have a continuous autofocus. Even with that the video is pretty darn good, and the stills are reliably great, both out of water and in water (water-clarity dependent). IMO it's absolutely worth the $300.

Quick question - do you want waterproof as in can go underwater or waterproof as in can withstand rain? If you want underwater I would personally go with the Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch LCD. It's rated to like 33 feet I think. My friend has one and the reviews on Amazon are phenomenal.

If you're going underwater PLEASE buy a nice wrist strap. You WILL drop your camera otherwise. OP/TECH USA 1801021 Cam Strap QD- for Compact Cameras and Binoculars -Neoprene (Black) is relatively cheap and has the added bonus of having a quick release. This means you can keep the strap on and just release the camera if you need to. This is really convenient if you're wearing gloves. If you get a second strap for a friend then you two can conveniently pass the camera back and forth and just click it in and not worry. You definitely don't want to lose a new camera and you certainly don't want to lose the memories.

I'd recommend a point and shoot super zoom camera that also does video like these...

  • Canon PowerShot SX50 (~$350 USD, 50x zoom, 24-1200mm, 1080p24)
  • Canon PowerShot SX60 (~$500 USD, 65x zoom, 21-1365mm, 1080p60)

I was looking for a similar camera and decided on the Canon Powershot D10 (available at Amazon) - I haven't bought it yet, so I can't offer a review of it's quality.

According to Canon's material, it's has 12.1 megapixel sensor and is waterproof to 33 feet. It's operating temperature is 14-104 degrees F, and it's shockproof to 4 feet. It's also got 3x optical zoom and image stabilization, as well as all sorts of onboard software features.

It has a solid 4-star rating on Amazon, with 55% of those reviews being 5-star.

My wife and I added it to our baby registry - we're going on a vacation to Hawaii in February, and we figure once our little boy is old enough to start using a camera in a few years, one that's shock, temperature, and waterproof probably wouldn't be too bad of a starter camera - you know, so he can be like his dad :)

Really? That's what tipped you off? The big hint to me was using a camera with a non-changeable lens....

I wouldn't recommend starting with used unless you're buying from a place that has inspected it to make sure there are no problems.

I'd recommend starting with a point and shoot camera that offers some manual features so that they can learn more advanced techniques before graduating up if they decide to do so. If you want to save some money, buy an "older" model that's been replaced - prices typically drop until the inventory is gone. Take a look at something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Wide-Angle-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B005I6DVC0/ref=sr_1_35?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1410105285&sr=1-35 - it's got the Aperture priority, Shutter priority and Manual modes like more advanced cameras, but you don't have to use them if you don't want to. And it's a lot of features for the price since it's an older, replaced model.
