It was recommended on here a few months ago and Im so happy I got it. Love this group. Its called Pageturnerz from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WZ1DRH2?ref=myi_title_dp If you have any hand pain or want a better grip on your Kindle I really recommend it.

u/chock-a-block · 9 pointsr/ADHD

Breaking up with your phone is a real thing!

I read library books with one of these and leave my phone in the other room: https://www.amazon.com/Likebook-Reader-7-8300ppi-Touchscreen-Audible/dp/B07H4GF6HD/

Definitely use a timer and set your bed time to be the same every single night. When in bed, read a boring library book. What happens is, your body gets used to the routine.

Unfortunately for us, flexibility around your bed time doesn't work very well. You cannot vary the routine.

I've owned a second-gen original-flavor Kindle (2009), a Kindle Keyboard 3G (2012), a 6th-Gen Paperwhite (2013), and a 7th-Gen Paperwhite (2017, my current Kindle).

The Kindle Keyboard was definitely a big improvement over the earlier design, but the only thing I miss is its pageturn buttons, and I wouldn't sacrifice the Paperwhite's built-in frontlight to get them back—especially not when paired with a touchscreen that makes navigation and highlighting infinitely easier than a D-pad. (I literally didn't even use the highlight feature until I got my first Paperwhite; now I use it pretty frequently.) The old lighted cover was nice, but it really doesn't hold a candle to the build-in light. While 3G connectivity was a feature I aggressively sought out in earlier models, since switching to WiFi-only, I found I haven't once missed it. And the speakers I used exactly once, when I tried using the auto-narration feature while doing some cleaning, and it was so jarring I stopped after maybe 5 minutes.

Get yourself one of these and it'll be twice as good. I just got one and I love it. Perfect holder case. PageTurnerz 5-in-1 Grip Case for Paper White 10th Generation eReader - (2019 - Current Model) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WZ1DRH2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_I8AFDbSG54YQH

Oasis has touchscreen & turn buttons.

I much prefer using buttons, but that's a personal preference.

u/zobger · 5 pointsr/kindle

I have the Oasis 2 which has the same aluminium frame as the 3 and yeah it's slippery. I've dropped it a few times.

Ended up getting this TPU cover and it's great:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791BBNKV

Think it will fit the Oasis 3 as well since the dimensions are very close to the 2.

I much prefer this fabric cover - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079BG3LQF/

Mi serve questo per questioni di università

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072FP9VWD/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

https://www.amazon.it/Sony-DPT-RP1-Digital-Paper-System/dp/B072DXXXN1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538719219&sr=8-1&keywords=rp1+sony

If you can shell out an extra 100 the new 10th-gen Amazon Kindle is better suited if you'll be using it for reading: https://www.amazon.ae/All-New-Kindle-Display-Built-Light/dp/B07FQ4DJ83/

u/viper_in_the_grass · 3 pointsr/kindle

Yeah, from what I'm seeing in the aussie store, with that budget OP will have to get a used one. The cheapest Kindle is the All-new Kindle, now with a built-in front light, at $139.00. Ouch! I don't see any options for Special Offers either.

Can't find anything on ebay after a quick look. There's a used Paperwhite 10th gen and a refurbished 6th gen for $120.

u/lizcat · 3 pointsr/kindle

I've only ever used 3rd party covers for my kindles (touch, PW, and now Oasis2017). And with the reviews the Amazon cases have received I don't think that will change. I've been searching everyday and it looks like MoKo has one available for order now.

MoKo Case for All-New Kindle Oasis (9th Generation, 2017 Release) - Premium Ultra Lightweight Shell Cover with Auto Wake / Sleep for Amazon Kindle Oasis E-reader Case, BLACK https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0771GQ3X3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NORaAbACW3K0W

Not eligible for prime and only in black, but as of right now it seems to be the only 3rd party case. There are also a few sleeves (but it doesn't sound like you're looking for that).

I'm using an Amazon Basics sleeve until a larger variety of 3rd party cases are available.

u/CountSpankula · 3 pointsr/backpacking

They aren't waterproof at all but that being said it wouldn't take much effort to seal one up in a waterproof enclosure for transport.

http://www.amazon.com/Version-TrendyDigital-WaterGuard-Waterproof-Generation/dp/B0026GJHVY

u/dmetzcher · 3 pointsr/kindle

This one is worth considering, but I don't think it is waterproof: Leisure Jacket for Amazon Kindle

Another option is to check a sporting goods store. I found these in a local store. They are similar to this one, but significantly cheaper.

Here's an Amazon search for Kwik Tek Dry Pak. Lots of different sizes and features there.

u/RememberMe_theBitch · 3 pointsr/india

Here you go. I was looking for one too. It's insanely expensive. If you can let go of e-ink, I would suggest 6th gen iPad with apple pencil.

u/Angeldust01 · 3 pointsr/suggestmeabook

I don't have a book suggestion, if you want to to travel light as possible, you might want to consider getting Kindle Oasis or some other ebook reader. It's tiny, only weights 133g without the cover and has it's own reading light. It can hold thousands of books and battery lasts for weeks or months, depending how much it's being used and if the wifi and lights are on. If you can charge the battery once or twice, you should be fine, reading a hour/day with light on and wifi off. It's possible that Oasis wouldn't need charging at all on months trip, but better be safe than sorry. Only downside is the price, but it's the lightest and nicest one.

I own the basic Kindle and it's been great on backbacking trips and travels. It's only $80, weights 161grams and battery lasts weeks if you want the cheap option. Basic Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite($120, 217g, has led lights), hard cover for it and battery pack like this wouldn't be terribly expensive, and would probably weight less than three books and would take less space in backback.

u/blorgon · 3 pointsr/kindle

Holy crap! I got a new Paperwhite for my birthday a few months ago but this is soooooo tempting!

Edit: Nevermind, the German Amazon refuses to ship this outside of Germany, just like last year during Black Friday sales :(

Edit: Well, I've just found this, so back to the dilemma!

u/Albertican · 2 pointsr/Calgary

Yeah but there's the other side to this too. I was looking for a Kindle, a brand new basic one is $80 (+ tax I guess). So I ask some woman who has listed a Kindle Touch (i.e. 5 years old) on Kijiji for $100 if she'll take lower because it's cheaper on Amazon, and she's like "yeah, I know how to Google", so I say "ok, I'll take that as a yes, would you take $40" and she says "No $80 is as low as I'll go". So she apparently knows a brand new one is $80, but feels that her old model is worth the same, if not more. I think it is a great demonstration of people getting attached to their things, and valuing it more than an impartial third party would. Sometimes coming to an agreement with people like that is impossible.

Anyway, that Kindle is still listed if anyone feels like picking up a Kindle Touch for $80.

That's certainly the cheapest way, but you get what you pay for ;)

A Boox Note Pro is much better equipped to handle big PDFs.

A Boox Note S is a little smaller (and therefore cheaper) and you might be able to get by with a Boox Nova Pro.

If you don't mind used, I've got a Boox N96ML that I could part with for about $250.

Amazon has kindles with light that were designed to reduce blue light, assuming you mean that you read on your phone or tablet.

They've had front-lit, non-led kindles since 2012 and their most popular kindle model (Paperwhite) isn't much more expensive than the one in the article (79.99 vs. 119.99).

u/Rawffle2 · 2 pointsr/kindle

I've searched extensively as well and could only find three choices, two of which don't match your preferences unfortunately. But I'll still list them since they have the flexible tpu backs instead of a hard plastic shell. Please let me know if you find any others!

  1. Young Me Shell - Just the silicone/tpu back shell without the cover.
  2. Ayotu v1: Flip-book cover with silicone/tpu back, but has a fabric/print cover.
  3. Ayotu v2: Flip-book cover with silicone/tpu back, but has a faux leather cover.

You can also consider vinyl skins. Decal Girl and Skinomi offer some, and there's probably a handful of other brands too.
u/hector031 · 2 pointsr/kindle

I have a case made by TrendyDigital that works great. It has a double zip opening for added protection.

These are the two links at Amazon for Kindle-Touch Cases with built-in light (but none are available...if someone decides to sell a used one there, it may show up in the future)

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Paperwhite/dp/B004SD2562

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Paperwhite/dp/B004SD26E8

The only other option I have seen is to go to ebay, search for Kindle Touch Case with Light, then go through each one to compare the pictures carefully to decide if you think one will fit... the non-touch Kindle of that same era (the one with the big physical button at the bottom) also had cases with a light, but don't believe they will fit the Kindle Touch... the case picture above that you posted is for the non-touch Kindle

I also own a Kindle Touch that I bought used from Amazon in very good condtion, and did some looking but decided trying to find a case was just too iffy

Maybe think about using the money you had earmarked for a case into a good used or certified refurbished Paperwhite 1, 2, or 3 if you need a built-in light for indoor/night use

Of course the exact case you want may show up on ebay from a private seller... just make sure it is for the Kindle Touch... good luck!

Even better, you can get the "Without Special Offers" version of the Paperwhite 3 for the same price. ($79.99)

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Paperwhite-6-Inch-4GB-eReader/dp/B00QJE3MGU/?th=1

u/isdnpro · 2 pointsr/london

Yeah that's with currency converted.

Here's two products I compared:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07741S7Y8/ - £129 (without ads) = $236.50 (was $238 when I checked earlier)
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/ebook-readers/kindle/kindle-paperwhite-6-waterproof-ereader-8gb/346788/ - $199 AUD (~£108).

I'm not actually sure if the JB sold model would have ads or not... but the model with ads in the UK is £119 anyway so regardless it's cheaper in Aus.

I often find duty free is more expensive - sure there may not be VAT/GST etc but the markup seems higher.

In my experience, US is cheapest for electronics, then AU then UK. Depends what it is though, and media is different again (although my Spotify AU subscription is cheaper than a UK one)

I wanted the thinnest and lightest case possible so I picked this one after reading some other reviews on reddit. It's an easy to remove magnetic cover (adhesive available if you want something stronger), but it doesn't cover the entire back. Meets my needs.

I have a likebook mars. It's really nice, also has access to the play store so I'm not locked into Amazon's stuff.

u/fucha1981 · 2 pointsr/Android

This is the top end. 13" screen, more ram, higher spec CPU.

They start between £100-200 for a basic type spec.

When you look at what Sony are offering for £700
(https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072DXXXN1/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_QUNVDbC1A5HQM) and how limited it is (also ReMarkable, https://remarkable.com/store/reMarkable-and-marker) the bigger price tag for the larger ones make more sense.

u/zstone · 2 pointsr/minimalism

A drybag for every purpose.

Man did I already mention the time when I was 19 and I had to cut myself off from used book stores for a hot minute? Was working at an outdoor facility for a minor pittance after room and board, spending a large chunk of my miniscule checks at the nearest used bookstore. Picked up a ton of gems there, in fact many that I kept through my initial book purge. Got several of the serialized edition of Essence of Alan Watts, Kahlil Gibran's 'The Prophet' in pocket size, so many more. I was big into this idea that bettering myself should be my first priority, and that one of the best ways for me to do that was to acquire knowledge, to read voraciously.

I think it's because I love books so much, because I already went through the cognitive dissonance of book-ownership and minimalism, that the anti-kindle sentiment always throws me off (even though if anything I should understand it more). Kind of like in Starship Troopers...ok, I hear the snickers, in this context it should be apparent I'm referring to the excellent novel by Robert Heinlein, upon which the movie was very loosely based - ie it had the same title and both were set in space. So anyways, Troopers, the book is all about the mental transformation of the protagonist, it's really a brilliant character piece. So we start the novel with Johnny viewing all these wounded army zealots as ludicrous, thinking that what they had attained was not worth the sacrifice that they had made. Spoiler alert, the book ends with Johnny so much a citizen, so much a 'wounded army zealot,' that he can no longer understand his own ideology from the start of the book, he has changed that much. A completely different person. Now that I am an ebook zealot, I no longer fully comprehend the incredible symbolic power of physical books. But damn do they still smell great...

Own a Nova and it's great. A little bit overpriced tho.

u/HiG33k · 2 pointsr/books

I'm not savvy on all the e-reader technologies, nor am I made of money. I like my nookbook because it was the cheapest at about $70. I like it better than the kindle because it reads .epub and .pdf. I do not like how kindle uses its own file type.

However, some downsides to my model include:

  1. laggy response time when touching the screen
  2. hard to push flip page buttons on the side

That said, I would not trade my nook for a "better" model because you get used to those downsides. Although if I would change anything, I would want a slightly larger screen. I do really like how the idle screen shows pictures of different authors. :D

If/when you get an e-reader, download Calibre as a computer ebook organizer application, as well as a file converter. That way, after you download your book you can look at the inside and make sure it looks right before your put it on your nook.
u/ruckis · 2 pointsr/kindle

I ordered this case after seeing it suggested on here. Works great, my hand and thumb don't get tired.

u/MidnightPlatinum · 2 pointsr/CasualConversation

They all have a different feel to them. The only one I have ever liked is the Kindle Paperwhite, current generation HERE. I've enjoyed using my mom's B & N "Nook" device before, but found it distracting. I also don't like full color and have read the studies that show plain black and white eReaders increase how much people read, but the cheap tablet color type don't.

With the paperwhite I have that nice screen, crisp custom font, high contrast, fast processor, and that perfectly adjustable backlight which has 20 very fine-tunable settings. Mine is one of the models with the page turning glitch, so on some days it will turn two pages at once, but even then I love it so much. So much.

I lay awake reading it.

Best purchase ever.

u/mike413 · 2 pointsr/minimalism

Strangely, I have a kindle DX with the amazon black pebble skin leather cover and it feels exactly like a book when I close the cover. It also looks and sits like a book on the shelf.

They've changed the cover since than and it's not quite the same.

I also have a kindle touch, and the amazon lighted cover for that is smooth curved leather and doesn't have the same satisfaction.

u/frizface · 1 pointr/latterdaysaints

I was thinking the kindle without the digital screen. My mom really doesn't like charging batteries :) Do you have Amazon's Fire tablets, or this kindle?

u/Spongi · 1 pointr/Survival

Ahem. I'm sure there's a more rugged model available for outdoor usage though.

Incase you're not super familiar with battery terminology - AA batteries have between 2000 and 3000 mAH's. Depends on what type of battery and what application it's used in. Your typical Alkaline or Lithium batteries run about 3 am hours (1000 milliamps = 1 amp), however Alkalines have a high internal resistance so if you try to use any high power uses, like a digital camera, the resistance converts a lot of the potential energy into heat, effectively wasting it. Using alkalines in a digital camera you can expect to get maybe 200 mah's out of it, if you're lucky.

Rechargeable nicad's will run about 2 amp hours. So 4, AA's will net you about 8000 mah's. My smart phone will last a good 12 hours of e-reading on a single charge and it's battery holds about 1.5 amp hours.

If I were to use that charger, I would want a USB AA charger to go with it to power my headlamp too and/or any other devices I might want.

The charger I linked has an internal battery pack that holds 7.2 amp hours, so that alone would run my smart phone for about 60 straight hours on a single charge.

The current generation of rechargeable batteries (eneloops), can be reused around 2000 times as well, with a low self discharge. Guaranteed to hold 70% of their charge after a year, 50-60% after 3 years iirc.

A dedicated e-reader will be a lot more efficient at battery usage though. This one can last up to 2 months on a single charge. It's just a simple black and white reader though.

u/wadcann · 1 pointr/reddit.com

Two points:

  • Almost all of the things that you've described are features that work on a laptop, but can also be done on a tablet. Sure, I'm not saying that there aren't areas where a tablet can't be used almost as well or as well as a laptop. It's just that there are areas where they are much weaker.

  • You make a good point -- there are some tablets that use e-Ink. While I don't know of any reason that they couldn't do so, I don't know of any laptops that have an e-Ink display. e-Ink displays can't do a lot of things that LCDs can, but they're really good at one thing that LCDs aren't -- displaying static grayscale images that look good even in sunlight and use low battery power. I've usually heard these devices referred to as "e-book readers" or the like, and for them, I certainly agree that there are tasks that they are much preferable to laptops (and LCD-based tablets) for. If I want to go read something outdoors, an e-book reader with an e-Ink display is a no-brainer.

  • The price is a good point. I just purchased a $280 laptop (eee PC 1215P). Your e-ink reader, based on Amazon runs ~$149.

I should really amend my statement above. I can understand e-book readers -- those are indeed specialized devices that can beat out laptops in specific roles, on price, reflective display, and battery life (if showing mostly-static images). What I don't understand is the device class that includes things like the iPad ($499+, based on store.apple.com) or the color (LCD) "version" of your reader (Nook Color, $249).

The Onyx Boox line of tablets/ereaders are essentially Android machines. They run any Android apps, including their ebook apps, and have been around for a long time, many models with different screen sizes, etc., it can be a little confusing to sort through the different models, some are older, lower resolution.

https://onyxboox.com/

Termux and associated packages should run okay, but do a little checking to confirm, e.g.,:

Nova Pro model seems now like the 'goldilocks' boox model, good screen, recent android, not too expensive:

If you enjoy sci-fi at all, Headcrash by Bruce Bethke is fantastic. It's a send-up of Gibson, Sterling, Dick, Rucker, Tom Clancy, Ernest Hemmingway, and nearly every bad "Cyberpunk" movie of the last 30 years. Strangely enough, the actual plot's decent, too. That's rare for parody books.

Plus, you can find it in paperback for less than $4 at Amazon. I have to re-order regularly because my loaner copies regularly disappear.

u/jim653 · 1 pointr/kindle

Are you sure about that? The page for the international version of the new Kindle shows Mauritius as a country they deliver to. (The international version is just the Kindle minus the US ads.)

u/highorderdetonation · 1 pointr/ereader

You want an Android-based e-reader, which literally rules out Kindles and Nooks and Kobos. That list probably starts with the Boyue Likebook Mars and just goes up from there.

u/Jacky_1233 · 1 pointr/ereader

Why not get an e-ink reader? It will be friendly to your eyes and you will not need to install a blue-light filter by yourself. If you want a portable one and you may read PDFs sometime, I'd like recommend a 7.8 inch ereader for you. Not too big to carry or too small to read. Boox Nova Pro or Likebook Mars could be fine.

u/garylapointe · 1 pointr/kindle

I've looked at something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KM2BDPP/ but $239 is a little steep.

I keep hoping for a discounted older version of something to try out for $99 :)

I'd mostly use it as an ereader, but I wouldn't mind being able to check my mail or news outside on a sunny day (throw a bluetooth keyboard in there and I could be being productive without the distractions of a laptop or full-color tablet). I'm also wondering if it might do PDFs a bit better (faster).

They actually redesigned their official Oasis covers, after a lot of complaints that the magnets on the old design weren't strong enough. Here are the new covers:

Official Amazon Leather Cover

Official Amazon Fabric Cover

there is a check box on the main oasis store page right under the price

It's an ereader. I have this one.

u/hnilsen · 1 pointr/Nexus7

It hasn't been released yet - due to release 20th of August. All the pictures I've got are the ones from the amazon site: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008NMCPTQ/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d11_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1F78MSBK1GFF5462M4KN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=317828027&pf_rd_i=468294

What makes this my choice (albeit I haven't personally seen it), is that it's got a hard back that covers the device, it's got a smart cover with magnets that close and turn off the screen that can also turn into a stand. And it's sleek as a motherfraker.

If it fits into the Nexus 7 as well as the THIS fits the Kindle Touch, I'm going to be a very, very happy man.

Don't know if this works for you, but I have the Sony Digital Paper - DPT-RP1

It's a little pricey, and it only works with PDFs and is b&w only, but the pen is nice, you can highlight stuff, add notes, etc. It's not the most solid build (a little tape fixes it up nicely), but it's really light and the size of a sheet of paper.

I've had it for 2 years now, probably saved me $1000 in paper and toner.

Boox makes a version, too. Google "Digital Paper" - there might be more now.

If you want to go really cheap, maybe something like this??

Never tried this one, but it's on my shopping list. Don't know if it meets all the requirements, tho.

I got this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791BBNKV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it's been great. Gives it the soft touch rubber feel that most Kindle have.

I know metal is "premium" but I've always found high quality plastic/rubberized plastic to be most comfortable for devices.

Really thin case. Love it. Held on by magnet so you can remove it when reading if you like. Your hand is holding the soft felt when folded back over.

I just received the MoKo case two days ago. For the price it’s great. Fits tightly, covers the entire Kindle, has magnet so Kindle sleeps when the case is closed. Weight of Oasis 2 with the MoKo case is 11 oz.

I bought the GREEN LIGHTED COVER for my Kindle Touch and absolutely love it. The light is certainly bright enough and the case just fits very well overall. I was hoping to find 3rd party options too but I'm super glad I bought this one.

OH, I was also randomly complimented about the case on the bus the other day from a cute girl…so that didn't hurt!

I've been regularly searching for a TPU cover to add a little more grip to the Oasis 2 just like I usually do with my smartphones. There are a few choices for the 2016 Oasis and finally one has popped up on Amazon for the 2017 model: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791BBNKV/

The cover won't be great if you're looking for protections for a bag , but if you're looking for something easy to slip on and off by your bed for a little more grip than the smooth aluminum back offers, this might be something work looking at. It's easy to slip on and off by the bed and into a more protective case if I'm talking it in my work bag.

At 47 grams, it's about a quarter more weight, but is largely imperceptible. The fit and finish could definitely be more refined, as there are visible seams and a small bump where the case doesn't sit flush against the Oasis. The front face has a sizable lip (~2mm?) that should protect the face of the Oasis if you put it face down on a table.

As for grip, it adds a reasonable amount more grip, but it could offer more. I've had grippier TPU cases for phones. I'd say it it brings the Oasis from a 1/5 to a 3/5. I may experiment with roughening the surface up a little bit, but it's decent enough for now.

Headcrash is a humorous look at the cyberpunk genre.

I bought the official Amazon case

Kindle Oasis Water-Safe Fabric Cover, Charcoal Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079BG3LQF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_TtnrDb3QV9H6B

It has the magnets and puts it into sleep mode. What case are you talking about?

Already been mentioned but:

Neuromancer - genre defining, gritty, required reading. ;)

Snow Crash - Excellent, hugely enjoyable characters, good sci fi

Also good and haven't been mentioned:

Headcrash by Bruce Bethke - bizarre, silly, fun cyberpunk (for instance, full sensoral cyberspace connection is done through a rectally inserted probe..)

The Mind's I by Douglas Hofstadter - Excellent collection of short stories about cognitive machines

Wyrm by Mark Fabi - "Interweaving mythology, virtual reality, role-playing games, chess strategy, and artificial intelligence with a theory of a Group Overmind Daemon susceptible to religious symbolism, first-timer Fabi pits a group of computer programmers and hackers against a formidable opponent who may fulfill end-of-the-world prophesies as the millennium approaches."
