Start with Diagnostic Targets you can print or buy. These were of great help.

Edit: There are some caveats

Edit pt.2: Pro training, if it can be afforded is a great plan, too.

Honestly just stick to the good old fashion ones, these things are actually incredibly durable. Apparently Caldwell Makes some as well though I haven't used those yet.

I've put a LOT of rounds through my first ball, probably close to 500 at this point, and there's a few that hang out at my range near-permanently, that have probably seen well over 1000, and still "work".

You'll probably end up paying as much if not more for the dog toys, but I suppose for $8-10 it isn't a very expensive experiment.... I'll shoot one of my puppers old ones this week.

I've read this thread all the way down. There seems to be something not understood here. It's because they want to. You might not want to, but they do.

For example, my first rifle was a Marlin 60. I have 5 Marlin 60s. I like to shoot them, I know how to work on them and I like to collect the old Glenfield variants of them. Do I need 5? No. Can I shoot 5 at once? No. Are they my primary gun for anything? No. I still own 5 and I shot one of those 5 a couple of weeks back for fun at a range. I was shooting one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Do-All-Outdoors-Dancing-Bouncer-Caliber/dp/B004MXGQ36

I spent two hours and about 300 rounds plinking at that little orange ball from 50 to 100 yards because I enjoyed it.

Not all my guns or collection have to be serious or about anything more than I like having them, owning them, working on them. In other words, it's because I want to. Just like you don't want to or don't see a practical need. If we're talking actual practical need I could easily limit myself to 5 guns. I have no desire to do this and I'm north of 75 myself. My collection just happens to shoot bullets.

What kind of lighting were your readings taken under? Improper lighting can lead to inaccurate readings. If you don't have one an IR lighting set like this works wonders and I know for a fact that this one will work with a ProChrono.

I usually just print it out on standard A4 paper and keep the target close (smaller targets are similar to hitting larger targets at range), but they [sell them in the standard target format] (http://www.amazon.com/Diagnostic-Handguns-Visibility-Analysis-Correction/dp/B00KJQF4U6) if you're not a stingy bastard like I'd be.

u/Georgy_K_Zhukov · 3 pointsr/guns

If he only has a hand thrower, get him a real one! A nice one would be a bit over your price range (electric thrower is over 200 bucks min), but they make small ones that can be had for under 60 bucks, and there is plenty of in between to be found.

So far the best way I've found without having my target break or drop is using the following:

  • 2"x4" x (however wide you want the stand)

  • These stand brackets

  • 3/4" black pipe (or galvanized, black just stands out better in my opinion), get whatever length you want the height of your target at, I went with 6' and happy so far.

  • 1/2" bolts to attach to both the 2"x4"

  • 1/2" chain to attach from the 2"x4" to the targets.

  • I had tried this set here and the 1/4" chain did not hold up after 20+ shots of .308.

  • These also work pretty well, but if you're shooting larger caliber rifles or handgun and hit them, they will tear a bit. I've hit them with .22lr and 9mm and they pass right through, but the .45acp and .30-30 left some nasty rips in them.

  • for my silhouette target, I use this when shooting 200 yards, it's on a 2"x4" with a box frame at the bottom, I also thrown a small 25lbs bag of sand on the base to be sure, it's worked amazingly well so far.

Someone on here pointed them out the other day on Amazon, when they were on sale. They were 10.00 for 60, but are up to 14.00 now. Still a heck of a deal in my opinion.

You can get the fancy kit: Birchwood Casey Sight Touch-up Set.

If that's too expensive, you can go down to the craft/hobby shop and get individual paint markers. Clear nail polish, or super glue, helps prevent rapid wearing away.

I second Caldwell Precision. Lots of bang for your buck. If you're going to be chronoing inside or at night I'd also recommend the lighting kit.

I've had really good experiences with the [Caldwell Magnum rifle gong] (https://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-Magnum-Complete-Certified-Diameter/dp/B005CF1TMG)

It's AR550 and very durable, I accidentally loaded a 62 grain green tip steel penetrator in with my 55gr ball ammo in my Mini-14 and even that didn't go through the plate.

Edit: Remember to not shoot steel closer than a minimum of 10 yards with a pistol, and 75 yards with a rifle. Probably 100 yards if you're shooting something crazy like .338 lapua. .22 is ok to shoot at pistol distance.

u/TwoHands · 2 pointsr/guns

Amazon link to the Top Hat shape.

For some reason, the solid ball isn't available on amazon, but there's plenty of fun stuff.

These are also a helluva lot of fun for pistols.

(Note: These are for outdoor type ranges only for the most part as they necessitate aiming in directions that aren't strictly down your lane).

albeit 60 targets would be 10 bucks IF you didn't have to get anything besides neon paper

To expand what /u/CrunkleRoss said a little, there are a number of formal clay shooting sports (at least 20), which are generally grouped under three disciplines:

  • Skeet
  • Trap
  • Sporting Clays

Skeet, sporting clays, and (sometimes) trap require two shots as part of the game (called a double), making a single shot impractical, to say the least, for any formal clay shooting sports.

If you say "skeet," "trap," or "sporting clays" you are talking about a formal clay shooting discipline.

Informal clay shooting (bustin' clays), is where you're using something like this, or this, to throw clays out in the wood/in your back yard/at the gravel pit. You can do whatever you want, and a single shot will work just fine, but you'll only ever be able to throw singles.

For hunting, a single shot is also fine, but not great, and how "not great" depends on the type of hunting you're doing (upland game, waterfowl, etc).

    -------------------

As for the gun itself, it's like any other H&R single shot shotgun. Here is a ton of reviews on those.

It will have a modified choke, which is okay for most things, but again, not great. Having a screw-in choke that you can change allows you to tighten or loosen your shot pattern which will help you hit a variety of different targets (with different presentations -- hunting or sport).

If you just want an extremely cheep shotgun, that will work just fine (but not great) for hunting and informal clay busting, that model 200 will do just fine -- just as good as any other single shot.

I have a 20 Ga single shot, break open, shotgun that doesn't get used much. It's mostly for teaching kids, or throwing in the truck as a truck gun. Either of my pump shotguns are better for everything and can also be had rather cheep ($350-ish new for the 'recommended' ones, < used).

for the 10/22, does he have a magazine preference? Ruger offers 10, 15, and 25-round magazines. can't have too many magazines. Also bolt release, magazine release, and trigger upgrades are popular. might be tough to get anything trigger-related for $50 though.

Ammo if you can find it. if he likes to target shoot, match ammo might be fun. and that brings up targets. if shoots cheap paper ones, maybe get him some shoot-n-c targets.

If he travels with his guns, maybe a nicer case?

u/themightytimmah · 1 pointr/longrange

They’re custom targets: https://www.amazon.com/Birchwood-Casey-Battle-Target/dp/B01MQQJLMI

The poker ones have a deck of cards, and you try to shoot the best hand you can in the time limit (10 seconds?)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HQQNZNK/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1517963578&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=poker+targets&dpPl=1&dpID=51VyY1QfZeL&ref=plSrch

Both of these targets are a bit pricey, but you can google around and find free PDFs you can print of both

I’ve used these pens to brighten up the sights of several handguns. I used the white & green on my daily carry (shield) and it still looks good after carrying/shooting a few years later.

Tip: I got pointy q-tips from the makeup section at the drugstore to do the dots on the shield, and to “brush on” the front sight of an older j-frame. It seemed like a cleaner application than applying directly from the pens, but probably isn’t needed if you have steady hands and patience.

u/CannibalVegan · 1 pointr/longrange

I've actually heard good reviews about the NCStar / VISM shooting mat despite the other crap they make.

They also make another that is a shooting mat / rifle case, also on Amazon.

u/TeamFatChicks · 1 pointr/longrange

As far as amazon ones go, I’ve been using this one

One thing tho, is that those four grippy panels get hot in the sun. Really hot.

I’ve had it a little over a year and it’s been fine but if you need one cheap and quick I’d get one that didn’t have the panels.

E: or you can just flip it over

unsurprisingly nazi zombie targets is actually a thing.

https://www.amazon.com/Zombie-zombie-Bleeding-Nazi-Target/dp/B00DC45W8G

u/ALargeAndMovingTorb · 1 pointr/airguns

If you want to shoot airsoft guns at targets, get some splatterburst targets and tape them to some cardboard. Airsoft guns can be accurate out to 25 yards, but these are lightweight projectiles with a muzzle velocity of 300-400fps, they don't have the energy to do make a metal target go ding!

As far as biodegradable, any airsoft gun will support those. A bottle of Elite Force Biodegradables is what you want.

For the guns themselves, it really depends what you want to spend. If you want a decent gun that will last and is accurate, you'll spend about $150 on a G&G Combat Machine. You can spend less but you get what you pay for. And of course you can spend more, oh yes.

Could check amazon.ca as another option for the caldwell magnum rifle gong without stand - http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00806C43W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages01

Price has gone up 15 bucks since I ordered it a while ago (probably the weak dollar), but shipping is free. Mine came with a white powdercoat and actually measures about 10" from top to bottom and 9" across the round part. It is AR550 and takes everything I shoot at it.

Looks like there is the 8" Iron Face steel target on there too for $70 plus $5.50 shipping - http://www.amazon.ca/Iron-Face-Steel-Targets-Medium/dp/B018813W7K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453181526&sr=8-1&keywords=iron+face+steel+targets

You rule! 1.21 Gigawatts of awesome!

my weekend will be cleaning, organizing, and grocery shopping, lol. Not too exciting, but maybe we'll have time to take the kid out to a park and take some pictures of her runnin around all crazy-like.

Linky link! This would be sooo much fun to play with (safely!) when I got the house to myself.

u/w00ticus · 1 pointr/guns

My father in law got one of the bouncing targets in the top hat style, and we wanted to see what a JHP round would do to it. All he had around were .38SPL +p rounds. One of them managed to cut a clean hole through one of the fins. After that we called a stop to the experiment for obvious reasons.

They're a lot of fun if you're outdoors and have some open space, and they seem to be able to take a lot of abuse. Based on that experience, though, I wouldn't use hollowpoints as they have a chance of limiting the lifespan.

u/Crow486 · 1 pointr/guns

something like this,.

they're rated for .50 cals, have a long life, and bounce around. easy enough to toss in a pack

Check out the top review, at least, but this seems to be what you are looking for, I just ordered it (along with a bunch of other shooting/target supplies) today:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PW8ZVO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm trying to avoid writing you out a book here, but you'll probably want spray paint to be able to tell where you're hitting and also protect it in storage, so here's the spray paint I bought to go along with it lol:

Happy shootin'.
