Not really Ubuntu tweaks but I run Ubuntu onthis...

Couple years ago I bought a Lenovo w540 (i7 CPU)

Added RAM to Max it out at 32GB

Since I don't use CD/DVD any more I took out the DVD tray, bought a HD tray for the DVD slot ($30 on eBay new). It's simple to remove (1 screw)

Bought 2. 500GB Enterprise Intel SSD used/refurbished on eBay (maybe it was Newegg) for $100 each.

Replaced the W540 HD with 1 SSD and put the other into the new drive carrier in the former DVD slot... giving me 1TB of SSD.

These Intel Enterprise SSD are rated at 2 Million hours of use so they will/should long Outlast this laptop.

One last cool thing I found my W540 had and maybe your Lenovo does too is a SATA Express card slot. Mine was covered by a punch-out plastic cover on the left side of my laptop near the front.

I bought this...

Amazon.com: Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro 6Gb Expresscard/34 Storage Controller - Plug-In Module Components Other TSATA6-PRO2-E34: Computers & Accessories

https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Tempo-Expresscard-Storage-Controller/dp/B0082FI3C2

It was cheap and is a simple push-in to install/remove it from the laptop.

It has a USB 3 connector which I plug into a 2 bay thermaltake BlackX external drive bay (about $40).

[best buy BlackX](
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/thermaltake-blacx-duet-hard-drive-enclosure-docking-station-black/9062073.p?skuId=9062073&cmp=RMX&extStoreId=1453&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=10d13a00-28fd-4352-9572-46de3abd9f11&ksprof_id=3&ksaffcode=pg269160&ksdevice=m&lsft=ref:212,loc:2&gclid=CjwKCAiAt8TUBRAKEiwAOI9pAEj-lVOGvJyeJFkvh1pM2E3rLVZvCUxK_GHNNoAIjzAVaH5TWvAfXRoChQoQAvD_BwE)

I bought a bunch of 250GB 7200 rpm 2 1/2 Seagate drives for about $30-40 each to plug into/out of the BlackX bays.

Now my Lenovo has 32GB ram, 1 TB internal SSD virtually unlimited external hard drives.

If I need win10 for some reason... I installed it on one of the 250GB external drives & at boot press F12 on the Lenovo to choose boot device.. and pick the external drive w win10 on it.

No need for dual booting off a single drive

I'm w you though. Lenovo laptops are built like tanks, easy to customize like I did and the fortune 50 tech company I just retired from has only used Lenovo for past 15 years.

Firewire is super cheap too, I got mine for $18 through an Amazon seller.

u/phenolic72 · 3 pointsr/protools

As for firewire being obsolete, my guess is that is coming from the Thunderbird community. The Saffire's will connect to either, so you could always upgrade to a Thunderbird card in a couple of years. BTW - I use a Saffire Pro 40 with PT11 with no issues. If you go firewire, do your research and make sure you get a compatible card. I bought this one and it works great and was cheap.

With regards to 3 monitors, I put my instruments on the 3rd monitor and sometimes lyrics if I'm writing. It comes in quite handy but certainly isn't necessary.

u/DinckelMan · 3 pointsr/VFIO

Hi there! This is the hub I have. It's Renesas based, doesn't require extra power, and is much cheaper relative to other cards out there, which use the same platform.

It will show up as a PCI-e USB controller, and you passthrough the whole thing at once, like you would a GPU or any other similar device. Doesn't need drivers on Linux or Windows, but does not have any MacOS support, if you need that.

u/n17ikh · 3 pointsr/homelab

I wouldn't bother with "official" Linux support. There are only a few manufacturers of USB3 host controllers and the drivers for all of them are in the modern kernel. Most of the USB card manufacturers (especially the generic China ones) don't list Linux compatibility but the cards usually work just fine.

Before the self-powered cards were available, I had a USB3 card in my Poweredge with a self-made Molex splitter/extension off the DVD drive's power connector.

The selections of self-powered USB 3.0 cards (as opposed to 3.1) is a lot larger.

Will something like this cheap generic card work for your purpose or do you actually need 10Gbps?

u/POLLODH · 3 pointsr/pcmods

it doesnt sound impossible, looking for your laptop model seems like you have 2 mini pci slots, one for your wlan card and another seems to be a mini pci ssd

http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Acer-M5-internals.jpg

you could get one of these

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Express-FireWire-Adapter-MPEX1394B3/dp/B004NNYJ34/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420823554&sr=8-1&keywords=mini+pci+firewire

but you would need to find where to get the energy and see if you can fit everything inside, you will need to mod the back cover, looks like fun work

This is the Fire-Wire PCI-E card I use: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002S53IG8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has given me no issues at all on Windows 8.1 and 10 connected to a 003 console/interface and a Glyph external drive both running Pro-Tools 11 and 12 and with the 003 acting as the system sound card.

Just don't use the drivers on the disk that come with it. Stick with whatever your computer automatically installs.

u/psimwork · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Literally any PCIe Firewire card will work. This one will do the job.

Edit: you said Amazon. Here ya go.

u/486217935 · 2 pointsr/beatsaber

Sure, it's called a PCI express USB 3.0 expansion card. I bought this one and it worked. You'll need to be able to open up your computer and install it in a PCIe (x1-x16) slot.

u/anon1880 · 2 pointsr/VideoEditing

The usb fireware ones are a scam...

You need this card.....i have bought this one and works fine with sony handycams 100% ---->https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-FireWire-Adapter-Digital-PCI1394-4/dp/B00006B8C3/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1496175292&sr=8-6&keywords=firewire+pci

No image quality loss...

It even includes a firewire cable to connect straight to your cam

As far as splicing i used the cheapest cellotape available in the store...i use my bare hands with no gloves...just watch the video i posted on where to apply the tape when joining broken tapes..

In my case i was digitizing a VHC-C tape and the cassete player chew the tape...i had to open the tape as shown in video and fix it

u/mistagaymer · 2 pointsr/VideoEditing

Ah, excellent. That makes things look simple, and there are D8 cameras on ebay with DNR and TBC for less than 100 (with returns lol).

One last question about this please: I have an ancient laptop (9 yrs old) which has a firewire port but is pretty slow. Would I be better served just buying something like this for my new computer? Firewire ports are ancient nowadays. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006B8C3/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Youve helped me more with a few posts than I learned in over 6 hours of research. THANK YOU!

u/DocTheop · 2 pointsr/hackintosh

[Update]: Bought this PCI-e card via amazon on Monday:

Syba Low Profile PCI-Express 1394b/1394a (2B1A) Card, TI Chipset, Extra Regular Bracket SD-PEX30009

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002S53IG8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Installed tonight, booted into Win7 first. Immediately recognized and installed drivers automagically.
Then booted into Mavericks with external FW800 drive attached, it popped right up on my Mac desktop.
Also, my original external iSight cam (FW400) plugged right in and worked in iMessage perfectly.

Could not be happier with the purchase.

u/sk9592 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Nearly any USB 3.0 PCIe card should work fine.

Something like this gives you 4 more rear ports: https://www.amazon.com/FebSmart-Self-Powered-Technology-No-Additional-FS-U4-Pro/dp/B072LS4JH7/

Alternatively, if some of your devices don't need the full 5Gbps of
USB 3.0, you can buy a USB 3.0 hub.

u/ChrisMill5 · 2 pointsr/Reaper

I'm glad you haven't had any issues. I have one unit connected to the computer with this TI card I installed last year. The other unit is chained to the primary unit by optical cable. The secondary unit is set as the clock at 44.1 kHz, the primary unit is set to sync via ADAT (all done through Saffire MixControl).

There are two modes of failure: when a project or application (Reaper or Adobe Premiere in my case) opens at any sample rate other than 44.1 kHz, the units stop making noise. This can usually, but not always, be corrected by setting the program to use 44.1 and allowing the program to resample from higher sample rates.

The second is more elusive. If either of the units loses power while the computer is turned on the default Windows audio driver steps in, as expected, but when the units are powered back on Windows doesn't allow the units to make noise even if the Focusrite drivers are selected as primary. If I switch back to the Windows audio driver, I can make noise through the built in headphone jack, but no amount of toggling will bring noise back through the Pro 40s. I don't know exactly how to fix this, but it's some combination of turning the units off, turning the computer off, turning the units on, turning the computer back on one at a time, and crossing my fingers that this will be the time it works.

Barring these two small issues I've got no complaints about the units.

This is a silence optimised build, that should work great in music production.
Should handle 1080p gaming flawlessly as well.
You can add FireWire with a PCIe Card like this one for $30-40.
Easiest way to save money would be to drop the 950 Pro, which is incredibly fast. The 850 Evo is nothing to scoff at either. I didn't include a HDD, because those make noises when in use and I assume you would want a silent PC for music production.

Looks good to me. The case you chose is awesome, I have a define r2 mid tower. It's great for audio work, if you combine it with some silent fans and a fan controller, it's basically silent. The FireWire card you want is this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000WCT5HK?pc_redir=1403896914&robot_redir=1 pretty sure that's the one I have, I'll double check tomorrow.

Why not just get the WiFi adapter for the wireless controllers?

> Receiving range up to 30 feet with 4 different devices.

edit: also if you want to stick to wired why not get a pcie card with extra usb slots so you don't need to use a hub?

Sorry for the late update. My server was actually configured with dual 570W PSUs, and I did confirm the P2000 worked in this configuration flawlessly, up until I added a four-port USB 3.0 card to the last PCIe slot I had.

After adding the USB 3.0 the server complained that not enough power was available, and under clocked my CPUs to ~1.6GHz. That's when I upgraded to the 870W PSUs, which haven't given me any issues (other than a bump in my power bill).

Otherwise, I've upgraded this to 96GB of RAM with 2x870W PSUs. As mentioned, I added a USB 3.0 card which pulls all of its power from the PCIe bus. I realized that not having a working battery in my H700 severely reduces its performance, so that's in the mail right now.

I'm doing a lot more work that requires a mid-range graphics card, and the P2000 has been nothing but reliable in this configuration. Highly recommended!

If your PC has expansion slots (PCI, PCI-E, etc) you can get something similar to this:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-FireWire-Adapter-Digital-PCI1394_4/dp/B00006B8C3

Keep in mind you'll need the right kind of slot and firewire port type.

Edit: Also, I don't think USB to firewire exists, it would be way too slow.

Wow. Reddit actually comes through for me! I had this issue. I thought I got a bad unit but checked on my Intel based laptop. Issue was gone. Switched back to my Ryzen based machine and <stutter, stutter>. So I took the advice and purchased this unit from Amazon and it worked! It worked like a charm. Thanks for all the folks that provided the advice. Putting the link to this item in the comment. It's great and cheap and bonus: I have more ports (not that I needed them on the ASUS Crosshair Hero VIII. Thanks again to all .

it will only use the pci slot on the mainboard, done.

h110 is the baseline of features, after that comes b150, h170 and the one with the most is z170 (memory and cpu overclocking if you own a 6600k/6700k).

u/theves · 2 pointsr/buildapc

The reason for the graphics card is because it supports up to 4 monitors. I know most studios will have 2 monitors at the desk and then another in the room sometimes if they do ADR for films. As for the SSD, pick whatever you like. There's no reason you should blindly purchase a 250GB simply because it's on my list. If you want a 500GB SSD, go and get one. I'm just showing you an approximation of what's tested and works. My interface is also firewire, this card is proven to work with OS X http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Express-FireWire-Adapter-PEX1394B3/dp/B000WCT5HK

I don't have any experience with USB to RCA adapters, but keep in mind that FireWire cards have gotten really cheap. The card I linked to is less than $20 and worked well for me on Windows 7 x64.

u/diablo75 · 2 pointsr/techsupport

There's plenty of potential slots an adapter card could be inserted into. You have 4 PCI-Express 1x slots. This would work: https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Firewire-Expansion-Controller-Connection/dp/B01NBQX1J6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536005350&sr=8-3&keywords=IEEE+1394+pcie+1x#customerReviews

The specs listed don't mention compatibility with Windows 8+ but a 5 star review from someone who bought one said it worked perfect in Windows 10, so this should do the trick. It comes with a low profile back plate you can swap out if necessary, if your computer case is of a low-profile size. All you should have to do is shut the computer off, pop this in any 1x slot, fire it back up and the OS will likely find and install drivers for it automatically. Then it's just a matter of finding software that can handle the capture/recording of video from the camera.

u/mushsuite · 2 pointsr/techsupport

If the motherboard has only one internal controller. I suppose for the same price you could just install your own controller.

u/philroyjenkins · 1 pointr/techsupport

Thanks for the heads up on the cover. I took it off myself because it wasn't low profile. I'll set this project aside and just buy a new card with the appropriate cover.

So I managed to get this one to show up, but I have trouble getting it to recognize anything I plug in.

From my research, I found that switching to legacy helped alot of people.

Upon trying to install legacy drivers, I get a serious freeze followed by bsod every time.

The product I intend to use recommends TI chipset, so my plan was to buy one that had TI, which would concern me if this one had it and doesn't work.

What are my options here? Would win 10 fix this? How about a newer pci card like this one?

So I bought this PCIE USB expansion card and installed it yesterday. When I first tried to boot my PC afterwards, it would turn on, all LEDs and everything, then my PSU would immediately make a click noise, then it would shut down. So I took the card back out, then tried to boot and it worked as normal. Reinstalled it, and it booted as normal once again like nothing happened. Any idea why it was having trouble booting originally? I'm new to these expansion cards so I wanted to make sure there wasn't something about them I should know about regarding power or if this was just one of those weird random things that happen every so often.

With this $15 Firewire card fits nicely into your $800 USD budget. I'd look into downgrading the GPU and maybe PSU (but be careful!) if you need to decrease the price to include a monitor, peripherals, etc.

Nice find!
That was very... "entertaining" read. Sadly I already had Legacy USB disabled in UEFI setup. I am definitely going to check the mentioned usb mailing list later.

The thread also references it being used on a laptop, which throws in a sizable chunk of power management quirks and BIOS hacks, on top of it being ExpressCard device. I have PCIe x1 desktop card, but by pure luck I have same ExpressCard controller. I'll grab some spare SSD and drop Linux on my laptop later to see if issue exists there.

Just for the sake of completness I forced mentioned pcihp, but I am not going to rip out the card from my mobo

I am very, very close to abandoning this device altogether. But... you mentioned libvirtd and vfio, which happens to be my use case too, and yours works. Would you mind sharing some details? Whether the guest is linux or Windows, or does the hotplug works? In my case, the guest is also Linux, which just escalates the issue one level deeper, since power cycling the machine is a lot of hassle already.

You also dropped another gem in form of Fresco Logic - I think I recognize this company from its USB to VGA adapters, but you say they also make USB controller chips? I believe I have seen only VIA and Renesas solutions before (there's Intel too, but their design is internally based on Renesas one) What are your experiences with these?

edit: Found this one for $12, it doesn't have 19-pin internal connector, sadly, but as long as it works.

edit2: Orico makes Fresco 2+2 adapter :)

edit3: Well, Orico states Fresco is not compatible with MacOS and Linux, and suggests a SKU with VLI chip.

edit4: The ExpressCard behaves like a drunken madman, even in Windows. Like depending when I insert it to the system, it gets detected or not, throws PCIe errors or not, detects devices or not, but even if it works, it overheats quickly (i.e. when copying to USB SSD) and shuts down, disappearing until next power cycle. (including removing battery). I gave up trying to check it under Linux.

u/ConsciencelessJet · 1 pointr/thinkpad

I got this T460 only a few months ago, not sure I can afford to upgrade this quickly.

I've also just noticed some external cards, like this one but I'm confused as to where that would fit into my laptop. Any ideas on this?

Is there anything else I can do that I'm not aware of to simply get my cassettes into digital form, like another device? Because I'm sure those cassettes works on other camcorders too... The cassettes I believes are mini DV I believe.

Thank you and sorry for stupid questions. I did a Google search but I don't understand anything.

I got a FireWire PCIe card for my modern desktop for my Sony Hi8 camcorder and it works great with VirtualDub.

Couldn't you do that and not get another machine?

Remember, a USB to FireWire cable won't work because USB is packet based and FireWire is bitstream.

DACs are digital analog converters. They are basically really fancy sound cards that are good for recording. Low noise floor so you can turn them up really loud before you ever hear any hissing. This is essential for recording any outboard gear. It also will have proper outputs for studio speakers aka reference monitors. I don't record any instruments and work 100% in the box so I use a 2output for my speakers. This is what I use as a DAC to make electronic music.

If you end up getting a higher end DAC that has firewire read below.

Firewire will be its own separate card that goes in a PCI-E slot. Its a very common port in Apple computers, its become the defacto standard for high end DACs that have more than 4 in/out

This one I believe works right out of the box.

Fanless, more than enough power for a machine like this. Costs a little more but for an audio PC silence is worth the extra money.

Motherboards don't usually have Firewire on the rear IO these. The best option is going to be getting a PCI-E addon card for it.

Ok. for video editing the most money should mostly be put in the CPU. This build has a very good CPU and a good amount of ram. It has a Gpu that could be downgraded but It can help for rendering a little bit. The keyboard and mouse are not great but that is not an issue. Upgrade l8er. it has a boot ssd and a mass storage harddrive. having a boot ssd is the best upgrade ive ever made to my pc. You could even add a footage ssd l8er for faster editing. This would be a great editing machine and would serve your purposes well. Let me know if you have any questions. also hmu with those skate clips once you start editng them. Also, that firewire thing PCI card https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-FireWire-Adapter-Digital-PCI1394_4/dp/B00006B8C3

I am looking to do something similar and if you have an empty PCI riser you can buy something like this and install a NVMe SSD to use as VM storage. So you'd boot from the SD Card, store VM's on this device, set the current raid controller to passthrough mode and then use whatever software raid you want to configure the remaining drives.

Buy a 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter or if your motherboard has expansion slots, buy a 3.0 add-on card like this.

I would urge you to go with the latter if you have the space. The x1 card will work in an x16 slot.

CPU: Intel's 4790K @ 4GHz. The fastest processor on the 1150 socket. Will fare excellently on both games and apps.

CPU Cooler A CLC as you wanted. H100i and H105 don't perform that differently.

Motherboard Asus high end Z97-pro. Features AC wifi, all quality sub-components. This with the CPU is a bundle from microcenter.

The motherboard selection was predetermined I am afraid, since the budget called for dual graphics and you wanted both a firewire and wifi card. Thus a Z97 /w AC wifi was needed. It's a great motherboard but you might not like the gold accents

RAM 16GB of fast memory. Black.

Storage 500GB of SSD and 3TB disk. No need to get two separate 1 TB mechanical disks, you can partition the 3TB in two parts easily. 500GB SSD should be more than enough to store your O/S, games and apps.

Graphics Dual 970's will perform great at whatever you throw at them.

Case I have the CM Storm trooper, which is the black version of the stryker you like. While it's a good case, the price point isn't that good to be honest. The enthoo pro I've selected (again white) has more features, space and is cheaper.

PSU 750W of good power from EVGA. Gold rating and modular.

O/S Windows 8.1

Monitors Instead of dual 1080p monitors, I've opted for a 27" 2560x1440 and a smaller 22 1920x1080. Both IPS. If you care, for the same amount of money you can grab 3x 1080p monitors for surround (3x Acer H236HLbid if you want suggestions, they have a thin bezel and IPS panel).

Keyboard Before grabbing this, make sure that you like the switches. This one has MX Blue. Either get a tester, or head into a store with mechs on display to test one with the same switches. Anyway, this keyboard is at a great price, it's not a "gaming" one with aggressive colors and plastic crap left and right.

Mouse A mouse with the Avago ADNS-S3888 sensor = great. Though Razer isn't a brand I especially like, this mouse + sensor is nice.

Firewire ieee 1394b as you wanted. It's pcie 1x, you will put it into the first pcie 1x slot of the motherboard, above the 1st graphics card

Feel free to ask any questions.

PS. This is the 3rd time I've written this post, so many open tabs for research, closed it by mistake twice :/

Thank you, Though I need at least one or two Firewire 800 ports for my audio interface, and my glyph (which can also connect through eSATA).

My rationale for the chosen products:

---

  • CPU: Intel Haswell refresh quad-core, locked CPU clocked at 3,3GHz with a turbo boost up to 3,7GHz. This is more than fast enough for your needs. You don't need a quad-core, but I decided to include it, just so you will have no problem running some more intensive programs all at once. The required system specifications for your software is all very low.

  • CPU Cooler: Review. Very easy to install + very quiet. This is all I want from a CPU cooler. The temperatures of the CPU will stay more than low enough for this cooler to even drop a sweat.
  • Motherboard: Review. This is one of the cheapest motherboards that I could find that is compatible with the Thunderbolt expansion card. This motherboard does have a lot going for it, which makes the cost a little bit justifiable. Connectivity; 6 SATA3 (6Gbps) connectors, 4 DIMM slots for up to a total of 32GB of RAM, M.2 (10Gbps) SSD slot, 3x PCI-e x16 physical slots (x16/x8/x8 electrical) & 2x PCI-e x1 slots. It also got a DisplayPort (required for the Thunderbolt connection if you use it), HDMI & DVI port. It also got a VGA port if you would for heaven forbid need it! Then it also got solid on-board audio, which I highly doubt you'll make use of, but hey! It's there..
  • Memory: RAM is RAM. Speeds don't matter, only capacity. So I went for 2x8GB, 1600MHz, CL9. This is considered the standard speed. You'll be able to upgrade to 32GB later if needed. But for now, this should be more than enough.
  • Storage: First look (SSD). High quality 240GB SSD for OS + most used software. This SSD is just released and seems to be very good, especially given the price. It's a no brainer.
5TB HDD for the rest. Should be enough?
  • Case: Review. A full red case is hard to get, there are a few but they either don't have great cable management or are very expensive. So I went with the Corsair Graphite 230T. Not a terrible case at all.
  • Case fans: I decided to include 3 higher quality, more silent, red LED fans. They're pretty much inaudible at low to medium speeds. Compared to the Corsair stock fans that you can hear rather quickly. So I would remove the stock fans completely and replace them.
  • Power Supply: Review. 3 year warranty, 80+ bronze, semi-modular, 520W PSU from Antec made by SeaSonic. This is a pretty high quality PSU and more than enough power for this system, that will pull about 100W~ during full load. This means that you can later add a video card if you ever intend to play video games on this PC.
  • Thunderbolt card: Review. It's about as good as you can expect from thunderbolt.
  • Firewire card: Amazon Customer Review. This is the best I can provide you with. I can't seem to find a real in depth review of it, but it will very likely just work.

Hope you like it and If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

It's as easy as looking at Focusrite's website for supported chipsets and finding a card with one they support.

I've played this game before, it really isn't that bad. There's even a bunch of positive reviews on Amazon from people using that FireWire card with the Saffire Pro 40.

u/computix · 1 pointr/buildapc

No, that card is PCI, it won't fit. I recommend getting a new PCIe one. Here's a suitable one. It even comes with a low profile bracket in case your system is low profile.

I am looking to build in the Silverstone FT03 Mini but I am needing both a discrete GPU and a Firewire connection. Is it possible to replace the onboard wifi adaptor (which seems to connect via mPCIe) on a Mini-ITX motherboard with another mPCIe device?

It seems as though I could replace the wifi card with this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Startech-com-Port-Express-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B004NNYJ34

However I am relatively new to home builds and this is not something I can find much information on.

Any help would be appreciated!

I can use my old P4 desktop tower for capture: it has a FW to PCI port-thingy I installed. Is that any good? It's like this one.

What software and video settings do you think I should use for capture?

This card works great for my Oculus sensors when using passthrough and has for months.
