ATM the bus is stationary but I do plan on on using these ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PLTQ5CN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BaD0DbWCMVJ18) with some L brackets mounted to the roof and the panels to keep them from flying off !
Search for "kme knob" on amazon.

That finds this for example:

Unfortunately they want $9 to ship it, so not super cost effective, but the description has the thread info you'd need to source it locally.
Does this look like it might work?
Mine are t-track bolts which I’ve put together backwards and locked with regular 5/16” nuts. A threaded insert is placed in the outer leg for the t-track bolt to thread into. Ideally you’d use something like this
It look like these or something similar: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006M70BM2/
I found this control knob on Amazon that works great.
https://www.amazon.com/thds-Tapered-Plastic-Black-Insert/dp/B002DGC426/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=kme+knob&qid=1556131213&s=gateway&sr=8-1
That's almost certainly a custom machined piece. You can see in the breakout in the lower-left corner that it's 3 pieces: a pivot rod and two endcaps.
You might be able to use something like this along with a short piece of threaded rod: https://www.amazon.com/JW-Winco-Stainless-Threaded-Diameter/dp/B00A9N0DUU/ref=sr_1_6?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1483477353&sr=1-6
These knurled M3 nuts share the same 12mm head, 7.5mm length as the eBay nuts OP linked to

I know it's cool to print your own, and these are a little smaller in diameter, but if you don't have M3 nuts readily available (and have Amazon Prime) and will have to buy nuts anyway, you may as well just get all-metal screws like this and be done with it. They work great on my MP-i3.
I got them off Amazon as all I could find in the stores was wing nuts! Innovative Components ANH1-HEX5S3A 1.75" Snap Lock Star knob hex hole to accept 1/4" nuts and bolts, black pp (Pack of 10)

it's a printed knob for use with a 0.25" bolt and nut. you press the nut in and it becomes a knob to tighten. we use them a LOT in woodworking for making jigs and tools. this set of 4 is for a router table fence.
instead of spending $3 per knob

So I don't know whether these will work or not yet, but I ordered them and I am going to stop at Home Depot and get the rest of the parts when they come in and I will report back how I manage with these....

Yup, I actually bought an XT8 base off ebay and had to return it because it didn't fit the XT8i tube at all.
I did just purchase an XT8 Plus base off ebay and the XT8i tube fits almost perfectly but the threading on the tensioning knobs is different than the threading on the XT8i tube. The XT8i tube has 1/4-20 threading and the tensioning knobs that came with the base are something different and larger.
Also unfortunately, the side bearings on the telescope do not line up perfectly with the holes for the tensioning knob. I guess the XT8i tube sits a little higher than the XT8 Plus tube.
This weekend I will buy something like these that will actually fit into the side bearings of the tube. I will also need to drill holes in the side panels of the base about an inch higher then the ones there now so the tensioning knobs can reach the side bearings on the telescope - otherwise I think it will work!
Amazon. Around $1 a piece. Make sure they are metal threaded not just plastic entirely.
