So cute! We use one of these things. You can even bend it like a hook.

Uh, I think grabber tools are designed for exactly this sort of thing: https://www.amazon.com/NoCry-Pick-Up-Tool-Set-Telescoping/dp/B07D23614P/ (ignore the magnet tool, look at the claw tool)

the best magnetic tip flex light i have seen not breaking the bank on a tool truck. https://www.amazon.com/VIBELITE-Telescopic-Extensible-Flashlights-Batteries/dp/B01HHRDXWK

20degree offset long nose pliers with a notch created by a chain saw file about 3/8 back from the tip can get amazingly heavy tubular items out .. https://i.imgur.com/FKFjIg9.jpg https://i.imgur.com/d0s4U5V.jpg

probably won't reach all the way down there. but you may have a stack of uniform coat hangers you could use to go fishing with..

Wow, it depends on how far it went. I only have a 1st gen, so yours may be different.. but that vent typically goes down just a bit, then has a very gentle slope toward the front/windshield, and at some point, bends downward toward the middle of your dash and down to your blower (which is typically above the passenger's shins).

The vent grill just pulls off; it's secured by a couple of tabs and is easy to remove. Because the contacts on the USB drive are metal, I would attempt to snake this:
https://www.amazon.com/36-Flexible-Magnetic-Pickup-Tool/dp/B01M0GU8AE/ref=asc_df_B01M0GU8AE/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=366352853698&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8820055218071282934&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019496&hvtargid=pla-792309941440&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=76503872856&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=366352853698&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8820055218071282934&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019496&hvtargid=pla-792309941440
down there, and hope that your metal parts are pointing toward you where this will pick it up. Be gentle when attempting this, and listen for contact! Because... see below.

If the metal part is pointed away from you, this will push it down even more, so... If there's quality porn on that flash drive and you really really need it, you'll have to disassemble the dash to get to the ducts. The only other option I can think of is to remove the blower motor assembly from the car, and direct (via flexible ducts or something) a high pressure blower (such as a leaf blower) into your vents where the blower was. Close all vents except the on that contains the flash drive... and blow. This may have enough force to blow the flash drive back up. FWIW, I'm only thinking off the top of my head, have never done this.

Good luck, and I kid on the porn thing. ;) Just trying to make light of what probably is a bad situation for you.

EDIT: I might add - the more you drive the car, the more the flash drive will vibrate, the further it may go into the vent. Avoid driving the car until you've found the solution, if possible.

If you shoot on public land, consider buying and bringing a magnet on a pole. The shotgun shell husks are the worst problem, and magnets pick them up super fast. You can fill up trashbags of them quickly.

They're the worst part of the problem for two reasons. 1.) They incriminate shooters more broadly and 2.) they're super colorful and noticeable which makes the area look dumpy inviting more dumping. Most people won't junk a clean place, but if it's already dumpy, theres quite a bit of people willing to dump. Even large cleanup efforts go for the big stuff (containers, furniture, cans, etc) but leave the shell husks because there's an overwhelming amount of them and they're hard to pick up without a magnet and most people don't know to use magnets. Clear the husks and people will stop littering.

Brass will get picked up eventually because it's valuable, husks and steel cases need to be cleared and can be done so fast.

Remove spark plugs and use a Vacuum cleaner.

Many different flexible magnetic pickup tools exist, plus cheap USB borescopes as well

What about a soldering iron, could probably just use that on the magnet directly and try your other magnet to pull it off while hot. That may work too and a cheap one will be less than a torch. Looking at it closer not sure needle nose pliers would be able to grab so probably will need to use another magnet I find these really useful as I'm always dropping nuts/bolts/screws.

If you have a Harbor Freight near buy, I think their cheep soldering iron and telescopic magnet could be had for under 10 bucks total. It is possible that a grill lighter could also work, but would need to be careful not to melt the plastic.

If you aren't worried about some cosmetic damage on the inside, you could also heat a needle and melt it into the round side that surrounds the magnet at the depth that the magnet touches the plastic and try pushing it to come from under the magnet to loosen the grip the glue has. If that makes sense.

-deleted DIY approach as impractical-

I don't know what you've got, but many of those magnetic sweepers are very low-power, intended for a concrete floor. Buy a high-power magnetic sweeper.

This gets good reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-53418A-36-Inch-Magnetic-Capacity/dp/B000HGH09G/

NEPS

Also, these are a good idea.

Glorious magnetic bowls. These changed my life. They're awesome. Also an EXCELLENT way to magnetize screwdrivers. Something I have to do like 10 times a day.

I guess i was just never that worried about screws. Most laptops only have one or two kinds of screws now days and I usually get them all back in and if I miss one it doesn't mean it's the end of the world. So long as all of the plastic stays tightly together and isn't showing any cracks, I'm good. I also have a ton of these spare in a drawer which I will go through if I've lost a couple of screws, and replace them.

My process for heat treating a blade is as follows. All very low tech.

I have two propane torches lined up in a way to get the blade to a suitable temperature. Bring it as evenly as possible to cherry red and quickly dunk in a tank of vegetable oil.

Do the "skate test" as I call it. run a file gently over the metal. If it skates off the blade instead of biting in like normal you've done it. If not do it again.

You can use a magnet to tell if your metal is hot enough. Touch a magnet on a stick to it and see if the magnet attracts the steel. If it doesn't then you're almost hot enough. I use one of these pickup tools https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rolson-Magnetic-Pick-Tool-2-2/dp/B001MJ0JVS

Tempering is simple. Chuck it in the home oven at 400F/205C for a couple of hours. Allow to cool in air. I use a separate oven thermometer as my ovens controls are a bit vague.

Try not to introduce any heat in final finishing.

I'm sure others will use more refined methods but this has worked for me.

It's just that, a telescoping magnet tool, handy for getting dropped bolts out of a car engine and so on.

Do you have Amazon Prime? If so there are lots of magnetic sweepers with free delivery by Sunday. Amazon has a pretty generous return policy, so you can easily pack it back up it ship it back for a refund.

u/someomega · 0 pointsr/WTF

Just run a Magnetic Sweeper over the area. They are made to pick up metal objects like screws, nails, and will get caltrops.
