A high-quality pepper spray should be more than adequate (foam is good for indoor use as the probability of area contamination is much reduced).

The extreme emotional trauma associated with shooting someone, especially someone known to you, even in self-defense is no where worth it. A non-lethal option that stops a bad actor is much preferred.

[Here is the full video](
https://youtu.be/FPMCkdD54VA) which the news have been reporting on. I found it by searching up the credited person's Twitter account.

The armed MAGA klan members pushed their way into the crowd then went to work inciting violence. There was the first spray as one of the MAGA hats rushed the crowd. Then he came back to spray a man on the ground point blank.

Here is the news report that other agencies like CNN have been citing. Found it by searching for the reporter's tweet.

>David Nicholas Dempsey, 32, who was also accused of violating his parole stemming from a prior weapons violation conviction, was being held without bail pending his initial court appearance, according to Santa Monica Police officials and Los Angeles County booking records. He was described as an Orange County resident.

>He was booked on suspicion of prohibited use of a tear gas weapon, assault with a caustic chemical and violating parole, police said.

Here is a brief sample of California pepper spray laws which I posted in another submission:

California rules and regulations to consider:

  • Devices cannot contain more than 2.5 ounces of pepper spray
  • Devices must expel pepper spray in aerosol form only
  • Pepper spray cannot be used as a projectile
  • Pepper spray must be used for self-defense only
  • Pepper spray products must include a shelf-life date, usage instructions, and first-aid instructions

Bear spray is typically 8 ounces or so. In the full length video of the incident there is a close-up of the spray the attacker used showing the brand to be Frontiersman, which comes in 7.9 or 9.2 oz. You can see the attacker has the 9.2oz version due to the spacing on the bottom text.

I just wanted to finish by saying CheeseFingers2 is a wanker for parroting some iNdEpDanT fReE tHiNkEr script without putting in any legwork himself.

Great start! Feel free to x-post to /r/bugout, as they'll have some more suggestions. Here are my thoughts:

  • I agree with gittenlucky: if the first-aid kit is mostly off-the-shelf, you may want to consider adding some pain killers, anti-diarrhea, and any prescription meds you might require. Some people also recommend iosat tabs, if you're concerned about nukes. If you're comfortable collecting and using them, also consider minor surgical gear, antibiotics, etc. Maybe some sun/bug protection? If you're walking, moleskin and foot powder?

  • Although I noticed you have at least one pull-top food can, the P-38 can opener is lighter and surprisingly effective. If you're interested in lightening the load, they're available cheaply. Lighter than carrying cans, you might alternatively consider a stack of Datrex bars.

  • While the candles might be romantic on a calm day, I'd swap them out for a flashlight, head light, or a pack of chemical glow lights. Each stick lasts about 8 hours and is pretty bright.

  • Have you considered any defensive items, even if it's as benign as pepper spray?

My parents had a dog before I was born. the dog chased a motorcycle, got hit and died. Lol. I've been thankful for it doing me that favor for about the past 25 years.

Anyway, I recommend this pepper spray gun

I've used SABRE, they make a gel that's really good too. Personally I carry a knife and a kubaton and pepper spray, but I've seen the gel in action and it's really good.

Or if you wanna go budget, you can buy a 4pack of pepper spray for like 50$, I'll edit with a link

first one

two pack of the same product

I wouldn't recommend keeping these in a bag if you intend to use them to defend yourself. Get something you can attach to your belt or fit in a pocket for easy access. The amount of time you spend on drawing any kind of self-defense weapon is a disadvantage to you.

I have one of these:

I had gotten my wife some of this stuff to keep with her when she goes biking and what not. Supposedly works better than just OC spray since it is a combination of OC and CS(tear gas), legality varies by state though.

I can't even count how many people I've given these to. Men and women. I won't go into detail, but it's helped more than a few in some scary circumstances. Sorry for your ordeal, prepare yourself just in case it happens again. Pepper spray will cripple anyone

u/marbledog · 2 pointsr/MensRights

Holding your keys like this while punching someone is an astoundingly good way to break your fingers. The bones of the fingers and hands are very fragile and can be easily broken in an unprotected punch. (Incidentally, this is why the death rate in professional boxing went UP after the adoption of gloves. Bare-knuckle boxers threw very few punches to the head.) Adding keys between your fingers does not improve the situation. When that punch connects, all those wobbly little bits of metal are going to slide laterally and act like little levers on your phalanges. You may succeed in giving your attacker some nasty scrapes, but you're going to have trouble finishing the fight with all your fingers broken.

A proper knuckle weapon gives rigid support behind all four fingers, like this, or this, or the old prison guard trick of palming a roll of quarters.

If you don't mind some unsolicited advice, I'd recommend a defensive spray if you're really concerned about your safety. They're inexpensive, effective, non-lethal, easy to use, and don't require contact with your aggressor. It's a shame that most men don't even think about them when they're considering self-defense weapons. I personally like Freeze + P, a combination CS and pepper agent, but I don't think it's legal in every state.

Stay safe, Brother!

Don't use an airsoft gun. If you point a gun shaped thing at someone it escalates the situation in their mind; i.e. what to them might have just been a robbery now in their mind it becomes necessary to fight for their life because they don't want to die so if they didn't want to fight you before they will now.

I am a gun owner and I was for a time a pistol instructor I have taught hundreds of women how to shoot a gun so understand this when I tell you if you don't have the inclination, time, or money to get some training with a gun (it doesn't take much but it is still recommended) then you should not have a gun. If you aren't willing to live with the idea that you might end up killing someone then you should not have a gun.

Contrary to what anti-gun advocates seem to think almost no gun owner I have ever met wants to kill someone but the by product of shooting someone is that sometimes they will die so if you aren't comfortable living with that as an option you shouldn't have a gun. (Statically about 25% of people shot with a handgun die so unlike the movies generally depict.)

What you should get for yourself as an absolute minimum is some pepper spray and maybe a taser. A taser will stop an intruder for about 30 seconds max but then they are right back in the game, pepper spray will burn their eyes for hours after, they will be fucking miserable. On top of all that most pepper spray has a dye in it that shows up under UV light that is difficult to wash off so the police will be able to identify an intruder easily for the next day or so without much issue. (Hard to lie about not being in your place when you are glowing like christmas tree under black light)

To that end I've been told Fox Labs OC spray is some super serious shit. Get yourself one or both of these

Either buy a few cans and leave them in various rooms of the house or buy one and make sure it's within arms reach of you. As long as it is legal in whatever state you happen to live in anyway.

Well I don't carry it off duty but I do carry it at work. I recommend a spray with a mixture of CS gas(tear gas), stops the threat quick and has the burn of pepper spray and the choking effect of tear gas. I'll try to find a link for civilian spray for you.

Edit: quick search found this:

https://www.amazon.com/Defense-Technology-56045-Stream-Pepper/dp/B01AKFFH66

It's a MK4 so it's a bit bigger, if you can find it in an MK3 it'll be smaller and more pocket friendly

I'm from a extremely small town maybe 2 murders in like 20 years or more. Break ins unheard of etc. I'm in a place literally over 200xs bigger I'm was so paranoid all the time. I know the wireless alarms won't do much to protect but it's an awesome deterrence.

Bake some cookies and give them to your neighbors extra eyes are always welcome. Our apartment has security and everyone is pretty nice.

Hi, I attended college in NYC as well so I understand your concern. NYC is super exciting but there definitely some sketch areas and you can't be too careful these days. One thing that I carried then (and still own now) is this. It's not terribly big, fits in a purse, and is pretty easy to operate. There are even practice cartridges filled with water that you can practice spraying so you know how it works/feels.

And I agree with the other poster who mentioned about running/getting away. I practiced Muay Thai growing up through high school and even I wouldn't fool myself into thinking I could fight most grown men. You just want to know enough to get yourself out of a tough situation and with enough time to run away and put distance between yourself and someone. But if you're able, definitely take a defense class so you can have some piece of mind and feel more confident.

You're definitely doing the right thing and thinking ahead! Let's hope all of it is never needed!

u/LionShep · 2 pointsr/dogs

The point was to lay out the cons of pepper spray and how to mitigate as much of them as possible if needed. And to assure that if you need to use it and hit your own dog with it your dog is rather unlikely to die or enter serious medical distress. Your dog might need a vet trip (and probably should be taken to one if paper spray was used), but if you're at the point where your dog is in enough danger you're willing to risk it, chances are you're already making a vet trip.

Use it if you need it, be prepared to use it, and know how to handle the after effects.

Pepper spray also comes in a spray-foam form, which susposed to be more accurate.

Pepper spray hurts. Trust me, I know. My mom once used a can of bear spray while we were in a tent. (She's done weirder. She's...also done far worse.) That being said (again): If you need to use it, use it.

This gives you stand off abilty as well as something you can deploy if you are in a grapple situation.

My Momma used to hit me with a section of Hot Wheels track. Damn that stung and left a mark too.

> What's the difference between bear and dog spray? Is it just a matter of strength?

That's what I would assume. You could also probably carry a high strength human pepper spray like this one. I believe Capsaicin is the active ingredient in all of them.

See if you can find an lgbt center for your town/school. They may not be your type of people, but you may be able to meet other people or get support.

Just keep thinking ahead once you leave college, there are so many new awesome people out there, and you can move where no one knows the old you.

Also, for walking alone at night, get a small thing of pocket mace to carry or put on your keychain. It can save your life in a lot of shitty situations.

I've been considering this. Here's my thinking on it:

When you carry, all of those sketchy, cold sweat, hair on the back of the neck moments are going to prompt you to think: "Am I in trouble here?" It's far more likely that you're going to be involved in a nondeadly force encounter, but as someone who carries, that can turn deadly really quick and, if it does, you're already behind the eight ball.

I'm thinking about carrying this because it might give me that tiny window in a nondeadly force encounter where I can land one shot and run, rather than worry about whether it's time to draw or not. It could have that same effect for your friend, but she's gotta understand that, just like everything else, she's gotta know how to use it and have a plan for what happens after she uses it.

u/LaserSailor760 · 1 pointr/ProtectAndServe

For your purposes I suggest any OC in a size legal for your state that sprays in a cone or stream pattern. Like this Defense Technology MK3 model or this Defense Technology MK4. The first link may not be legal in your state if you live in one that restricts the size of the canister. The second link is legal in all 50 states, but Amazon might not ship it to you because they're dumbasses.

A cone pattern puts out a mist or cloud of fine OC particulates that an attacking dog will get in it's eyes, mouth, nose and may inhale. It's easier to aim and use, but doesn't have the range of a stream model. It is also very susceptible to wind so be sure to try to spray it downwind. Spray it upwind and you'll have a bad time.

You could get the stream model, it requires better aim (think jet vs mist on your garden hose) but will put a more concentrated amount into your attacker's (dog or human) face. It is less susceptable to wind than the cone model and has a bit more range. Stream is the standard for most sprays.

Really it's up to you, those are my recommendations. I also recommend that you get a canister of the inert spray to practice with.

u/Bestketweave · 1 pointr/EDC

Hey OP, a big part of choosing a Pepper spray is knowing the laws. What state are you in? There may be restrictions on formula and size.

3 good ones would be: 1 2 and Sabre MK6

u/SomeChicagoan · 1 pointr/bugout

OK, thanks for the advice. I'm definitely going to add the 550 cord. Pepper spray is another good defensive option that isn't banned in the People's Republic of Chicago. You've also sold me on the stainless steel canteen, so consider that and some water purification tablets added, too.

u/ghost_waffle · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

My husband actually asked if he could buy me this pink pepper spray gun!

I opted for normal pepper spray instead... though I did opt for a pink one. Luckily, in the city we currently live in, I haven't had to use it.

Fits on your key ring, no one will know what it is, just say its helps keep the keys in your pocket with its weight. It can double as a striking device.

If you deploy it, BE PREPARED for the hotness that's about to be ALL UP IN YO' FACE, especially if in a room or if the wind is blowing against you (try to position yourself down stream)

In your car? Keeps the biggest fucking can of mace you can find. I keep a gun and a giant can of mace in mine.
