If you need backup, call in these laser guided scissors.

For $40? No thanks. A nomal xacto is like $4 on amazon. For half what that costs you can get an xacto bundle that includes 10 different blades, 3 handles, and a zippered carrying case. https://www.amazon.com/ELMERS-X-Acto-Zippered-Storage-X5285/dp/B00JWFIKOC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1465386610&sr=8-4&keywords=xacto

That version comes with a "rear blade release" tool.

Unsure how to use it, but that's what my limited google search found.

I used this one from Amazon

It's the circular glass cutter. https://www.amazon.com/Heavy-duty-Circular-Glass-Cutter-Suction/dp/B00D4LDFAO

His isn't identical, but it's the same idea.

To be honest, I did struggle between sharing this here or with r/ArtisanVideos but it isn't really a video and I'm not certain it is artisanal, but it certainly does take a bit of skill to do it as well as this guy does.

That said, the specialized tool just for this purpose does a lot of the work that people assume would be harder to do.

I use a X-acto #4 stencil knife. I like it because its smaller and has a nice clean turn radius.

Dammit I can only find those in black

u/revmamacrystal · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I'm a glass artist and a Wedding Officiant. This is an interesting overlap because art show and weddings happen on the weekends. BUT I get to be with my kids during the week. I love both those things because I got there on my own, both businesses were my money funding and my idea.

This is actually less than $25 and it's a tool that makes cutting circles out of glass much easier. Glass Cutter

Do people call you by a nickname?

u/frankenduke · 2 pointsr/foamcore

Not cheaper bit I think better.
The Logan stright cutter
I use it with my mat cutter but it works with a good metal ruler as well.

u/awmuhguh · 2 pointsr/Embroidery

Hi! I got a three-pack of those on Amazon for $5.99, and they’re great! Gave one of them to my boyfriend, who does a lot of hobby work on motorcycles, and he really likes them, too! The only thing is that they stay open like that when not in use, so you have to be careful because they are super sharp.

u/Runsamok · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

Trying to advocate for one set of side cutters vs another is the closest /r/gunpla/ gets to a holy war & I'm gonna sidestep that whole issue.

My current hobby knife is a NT Cutter handle from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/NT-Cushioned-Needlepoint-Burnishes-D-1000GP/dp/B004INTIEY

It's actually a little smaller up near the blade, a little closer to the size of a pencil. That, coupled with the much smaller blades, makes it a different sort of tool & far easier for me to work with. Blades are cheap at around $6 for 40 blades, enough for a whole whack of kits. Plus the burnishing & needle ends are handy for pushing down decals.

I too am new to 3D printing with the MP Select Mini v2 being my entry into the process. I have yet to make the bed reroute changes that everyone seems to keep suggesting, but that is next on my list now. I have done 2 things I think have made easy and "relatively" cheap improvements.

  1. Added glass to the print surface. As many people have commented both there and in this Sub the build surface can warp and/or comes warped. Glass can help resolve this and add to ease of leveling your bed. Additionally I find it much easier to get the prints off cleanly from the glass without issues getting the print to stick while printing. I do use a glue stick, which is cheap and easy to apply and remove. There are a few written guides as well as videos on how to cut/prepare the glass. I was a bit worried before diving in, but it was wayyyyy easier than I had expected. I purchased this glass cutter - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H4W6NMG and a replacement 8.5x11 glass for a frame $1.80 from a craft store. I was able to get 2 build plates out of this if only barely. Using some butterfly clamps to hold it to my build plate. Now that I have the tools and know how if my 2 glass plates break I am only out $2 and can create 2 more with another $2 rather than risking damage to the actual build plate.

  2. Octoprint (https://octoprint.org). The functional benefits may be argued, but I really enjoy it. I already had a Raspberry Pi 2, so I didn't need to purchase anything, although I did buy a WiFi adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014HTNO52) for it and a webcam (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FHO5Y6). This gives me the ability to monitor my prints from wherever and make sweet time lapse videos to make all my friends jealous with ex: https://imgur.com/8FANLEr. You can also use Octoprint as a server for uploading and managing your prints, rather than dragging your SD card between computer and printer. It also means you don't have to have a computer connected to the printer if you didn't want to go the SD route. There are also cool plugins that you can play with added for additional benefit. I added Pushbullet (https://github.com/OctoPrint/OctoPrint-Pushbullet) and configured it to send me hourly updates on the print, time left and image from webcam.

Personally I got a 3D printer to get into some of these more one off type projects, so it was well worth it IMO.
u/HAChaos · 2 pointsr/MPSelectMiniOwners

Yeah I don't know what you are seeing for 20 or 30. I got this on Amazon for like 6 bucks and it feels really sturdy.

Here is a link to some Star Wars cross stitch patterns ranging from simplistic to advanced patterns.

https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/star-wars-cross-stitch-4155787

I just recently discovered the use of needle minders. I love them!!! Here's a link for him a Star Wars one.

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Resin-Needle-Minder-Notion/dp/B07N6KDNDY/ref=sr_1_50?keywords=needle+minder&qid=1565287373&s=gateway&sr=8-50

Another item that I have found extremely useful is a disappearing ink marker. If he is working on counted cross stitch, once the center of the cloth is found for the pattern, the grid can be marked in relation to the center and it makes it extremely easy to know where the pattern is according to the grid lines. The ink disappears in less that 24 hours without any residual color (I use purple to contrast the aida cloth and the thread colors).

I hope he finds it enjoyable and relaxing.

This is the best answer, Olfa is pretty much the standard for good quality snap off blade knives, tajima is maybe slightly higher quality tools but blades are the same. If you are cutting heavy thick stuff i recommend the type with a thumbscrew for blade lock instead of the faster slide lock style as they sometimes can come unlocked when you are pressing down hard.

I use this one for light duty precise cutting: OLFA 5019 SVR-2 9mm Stainless Steel Auto-Lock Utility Knife https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006O87O6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Qqthyb2DSX0Q5

This is what i have for heavier stuff: New Olfa Limited NL LTD-07 Paper cutter knife from Japan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017M6QSI2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_otthyb8RK59QF

Both are excellent and the blades are noticeably sharper and last longer than any other knife like this ive found.

Scissors link. It’s quite inexpensive, to be honest.

EDIT: Fixed broken link. Stupid phone!

There are DMC Marbleized Scissors. I got Spiderman/Ironman wibe from Golden Copper ones. But it might be just me.

Edit: What about something similar to these? They are quite cool looking.

Pretty much this! Also, if you're really getting into it the next best purchase would be a hot wire cutter similar to this. https://www.amazon.com/Cutter-Genround-Styrofoam-Electric-Cutting/dp/B01MZ3VE4J/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1549932564&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=foam+cutter&psc=1

I can't think of what else you'd need to start making great pieces. You can pickup various acrylic paints at your local hobby store for pretty cheap too.

For tablet repair, the tool I found myself most wishing I had was a flat-bladed x-acto knife. I had an iPad that was seriously, completely shattered. The worst of it was cleaning the glass that went to tiny shards where it was adhered to the metal bezel with tweezers and a menda-style spudger.

I bought myself this kit so that I don't ever have to go through that without tools again.

I use this with the blades
it comes with.

u/pth · 1 pointr/photography

I would think something like this would let you cut a hole in the glass tile and just place your lens into the hole. That said, I never tried it, so I could be full of crap.

u/jwaldo · 1 pointr/Gunpla

I ordered it and the blades from Amazon. With a couple 40-packs of blades I qualified for free shipping, and I'm set for blades for quite a while...

u/ThaneofJudgement · 1 pointr/pcmods

You could hold the sleeves on with some zipties. Cutting a slit through that material will be tricky however. Maybe something like a hot knife would do the trick? There's also this style. I know that stuff will fray like crazy if you cut it with plain scissors.

EDIT: added second link

I like Iris Scissors for em, but you don't need any particularly special pair. I have these, they're pretty good!

u/dialtoneplus · 1 pointr/stencils

There's a lot of ways to approach stenciling. I just started about 5 months ago and have a decent number of pieces completed, but i'm still learning each time I cut and paint.

I'll be happy to share a list of what I use, but just keep an open mind and remember that there's not just a single way to do this.

[] Materials []

  • I use #11 blades [Link]
  • I alternate between these two knives [[link]
    ] [link]
  • Painters tape [Link]
  • Spray Mount (Not spray adhesive - I just learned this last week) [link]
  • 110lb cardstock paper
  • Clear scotch tape

  • As for paint I just started using Montana, which is a nice-to-have but definitely not necessary. I did a lot of my first pieces with Rusto - in general just stay away from gloss, super gloss, high gloss (it can work, but in general you will have an easier time with flat/mattes.) I went through a lot of trial and error with paint - I bought some Krylon paint which was at a higher price point and it was absolute shit (very watery and runny no matter how long I shook my cans.)

    [] General Tips []

  • Making your stencils is definitely a part where people's methods differ (specifically in photoshop and breaking up your layers.) Just search YouTube and find a method that works with you.

  • For larger pieces I use rasterbator. Stich them together with clear scotch tape and cut as usual. I tape both sides of the seams/edges.

  • Take your time with your cuts
  • Make sure your workspace is clean
  • Let your layers dry
  • Make sure your stencils are laying flat
  • shake the shit outta your cans (especially with cheaper paint.) When you think you've shaken enough, shake for another 60 seconds.
  • Mind the distance between your cans and the canvas (or whatever medium you're painting on)
  • Take it easy on the paint, you don't need much to create a solid layer.

Hope this is helpful, remember to share your pieces!
u/IArtThereforeIAm · 1 pointr/stencils

That's narrow!

I did some stencils a while ago where the radius were 5-10 mm and I used the X-ACTO #4 Stencil Knife Set (X5204) on heavy bond paper. It took me a while, not easy, but at the end it came out OK.

I have to re-do it soon and I am dreading it.
