> a passive adapter here should in theory work as i believe (don't quote me on this, and not you either quote bot) does the same thing as a hdmi to dvi adapter since they're all digital signals. If you don't feel like trying the only other thing i would recommend is an hdmi switcher and use the output to an hdmi to dvi adapter.

In CrossFire you won't get any video output from the second card so you have to use an adapter to hook up the third monitor via mini displayport:

Just to clear something up. The laptop variant of the 1060 is slightly less powerful than a desktop based 1060. The 1060 was designed to play games at 1080p at just about 60 FPS so you wont be getting any sort of smooth performance with a 3440x1440 100hz output.

That being said, the only VESA certified cable that has been tested to work is this one

https://www.amazon.com/Accell-B143B-003B-UltraAV-DisplayPort-Locking/dp/B0163LN18M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499259430&sr=8-1&keywords=accell+mini+displayport+to+displayport+1.2

They use the same cable that comes with the X34 (DP to DP) just rebranded. There are cheaper ones on amazon but there is a high chance they wont work.

I use this one: Amazon

I've got this cable, just checked and unplugging the cable fixes it, turning off the monitor doesn't though.

Thank you for your help!

EDIT: Cable Matters is sending a free replacement.

Here's a solid looking one for $10 http://amzn.com/B007NJ3WI8

If you think you can get by with a 6ft cable that's cheaper.

You are pretty farked as to how this setup will work.

Way 1: $160 HDMI->mDP scaler + another $86 active mDP > DVI-D (that supports 1440p, there a lot of $30 1080p DVI-D scalers). Who knows if this chain will work with two sets of processing fucking up your origina, less than glorious, 720p output.

http://www.amazon.com/AT-HD620-Mini-displayport-Stereo-Audio-Scaler/dp/B003WT9SY0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1345435900&sr=8-5&keywords=hdmi+scaler+1440

Way 2: Return your Korean monitor ($100 shipping + restocking). Pay $100 more for one with a built in scaler, hdmi, displayport.

My VG248QE came with a Dual-link DVI-D cable in the box, so if you have that then you should be good to go. Otherwise, something like this should be what you are looking for. You can also use Displayport cables, like the one found here.

edit: Also, another thing to be aware of is that you will need to tell windows (I'll assume you're on windows) that you want your monitor to display at 144hz (truthfully I don't know if this is a global setting i.e. it will affect your games too, or if it is specific to the windows GUI). Navigate to the screen resolution settings, click on your monitor, go to advanced settings --> Monitor --> Screen refresh rate and choose 144hz.

I believe your Mac has a mini display port connector. You can purchase a display port to DVI or HDMI connector to connect it to your monitor. Here us one to DVI

The following is an excerpt from Stack exchange. I cannot confirm if this works, but it might be worth looking into for you.

User - Tohster
Apple's specs show that the late-2014 (which is still being sold today, October 2015) Mac Mini can support up to two displays using its HDMI and thunderbolt ports.
I've confirmed this by trying to plug in 3 monitors directly into the ports on the Mac Mini (two via thunderbolt, 1 via HDMI), with the same results as the OP...one of the monitors is not driven.

The following 3-monitor setup worked for me:

  • Late 2014 Mac Mini with 8GB RAM (purchased Oct 2015)
  • 3 monitors, each with 1920x1200 resolution
  • Monitor 1: driven by Mac mini HDMI port (HDMI-to-HDMI cable)
  • Monitor 2: driven by Mac Mini thunderbolt port (I used this thunderbolt-to-DVI cable)
  • Monitor 3: driven via USB 3.0 adapter (I used this one from CableMatters and have had zero issues with flicker/performance, although I am not trying to play games or watch video on it...I use it for work).

    Some notes:

  • You can use a different USB adapter (there are several on the market) but make sure that it's Mac compatible. I previously tried one that had "beta" Mac support and it was terrible.
  • Thunderbolt-to-HDMI and Thunderbolt-to-DVI cables are really mini-displayport to DVI/HDMI cables....the Thunderbolt ports accept mini-displayport connectors.
  • For the two natively driven monitors (#1 and #2 above) you can use any combination of HDMI<->HDMI/DVI or thunderbolt<->HDMI/DVI cables depending on what your monitor accepts.

That's pretty much it. If one plans to use displayport, it's uncommon that they come with monitors, even the adaptive sync types that require it.

I mean, I suppose if you were putting more than two SATA devices, you might need more than the two that are usually included in the motherboard box.

Fans are something that is worth considering. It drives me insane when I see folks putting like another 5 fans in their case just to fill the fan ports, but a lot of cases only come with one (or two). I like 2x intake and 1x exhaust fan, so I will sometimes recommend that.

That's pretty much it.

Edit:

> I didn't account for the 25 dollar DVI cable

25?! Damn! Shoulda gone back to Amazon!

Latest generation Intel Haswell i5 CPU, motherboard with a lot of features @ a good price, 8GB and a 1TB HDD. The GTX 770 is a really fast graphics card- it should play most games on High-Ultra with 2x AA no problem. The monitor has great specs (1080p, 2ms response time etc.), only lacks HDMI so you might want to pick this up. I have the same keyboard and for 18 pounds you can't complain. Everything else is pretty standard.

Any questions?

You need more than just DVI-D. To get over 1080p60 you need Dual Link DVI-D.

Unfortunately the conversion from DP->DVI-D(DL) is not common. It is also, because of pinouts and double the TMDS data, needs to be an active converter.

So you need something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MDP2DVID-DisplayPort-Dual-Link-Powered/dp/B004I6L6DW

Be careful of cheaper adaptors because some manufacturers will call their adaptors "Dual Link" just because the DVI connector has the pins. That does not mean those pins are actually being used, and that the signal is not dual link. For example this one looks tempting at less than half the price, but it will not work: http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-DisplayPort-DVI-D-Active-Adapter/dp/B00DYRQXNO

u/pistolsniper97 · 2 pointsr/WiiUHacks

a passive adapter here should in theory work as i believe (don't quote me on this, and not you either quote bot) does the same thing as a hdmi to dvi adapter since they're all digital signals. If you don't feel like trying the only other thing i would recommend is an hdmi switcher and use the output to an hdmi to dvi adapter.

u/Capital_Offense · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I don't think you even need a thunderbolt dock. Get two long DisplayPort cables (or 1 if your monitors can be daisy chained) and then a USB extension with a USB hub on the end. Plug your mouse and keyboard into the hub and plug any audio devices into your monitor. (I assume that they have audio, considering they are high end monitors)

Edit: Because I have nothing else to do, I looked into a single cable thunderbolt solution.
The idea came from this video, and it will be extremely expensive. Like is there really a good reason to not just move the PC by your monitors?
First, to use Thunderbolt, you need to actually have Thunderbolt on your computer. Luckily for you, ASUS has a PCI card to do just that. Your motherboard is not listed as supported, but your motherboard does have the Thunderbolt header that is needed by the card, and is a newer mobo from the same manufacturer, so there is a possibility it might work. Assuming it does, you would just connect the DisplayPort from your GTX 1080 to the Thunderbolt card.

The next thing you need is a long Thunderbolt cable. I don't know how far away the computer is going to be from the TB dock, but here is a 33' long Thunderbolt cable. If you need longer, you can get 100' for $600.

Next, you'll need the Thunderbolt dock. There are many out there. I have no experience with any of them Belkin and Elgato both make them.
An unfortunate thing about the Thunderbolt docks is that they only support dual display when one of the displays is a Thunderbolt display. Otherwise, you can only use one over HDMI or one over MiniDP to DP, but not both. So that would mean repeating the whole setup with 2 docks, or just going with the suggestion I made above.

Yes. Try a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter.

Edit: I don't know.

I have successfully used the following 3' and 10' passive DisplayPort extensions:

StarTech.com 3 ft / 91 cm 20 pin DP DisplayPort Extension Panel Mount Cable - DisplayPort to DisplayPort - Male to Female:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YKX6JK

Cable Matters DisplayPort to DisplayPort Extension Cable (DP to DP Extension Cable) 10 Feet

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L1K1KDE

Note: I have occasionally observed static/sparkles in the video feed when using the 10 foot extension. Since the Rift S cable is 16 feet, adding another 10 feet seems to be on the verge of the limit for what we can do with passive extensions.

The following did NOT work:

StarTech.com DisplayPort Cable - 30 ft / 10m - Active - 4K DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable - DP Cable - Active DisplayPort Cable

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IFZN2O8

I connected this directly between my 1080ti and the Rift S. I had to use a female-female DP adapter.

The Oculus software showed the DP was connected, but the screen was totally blank/dead - nothing at all.

I did test the 30' active extension and female-female adapter with a 1080p LCD monitor and it was working fine, but no go for the Rift S. Either it can't handle the bandwidth, or something about this cable (perhaps the fact that is a unidirectional cable) prevents it from working it with the Rift S.

The StarTech was the only active DisplayPort extension I could find -- if anybody has experience with any others, please comment!

u/Chronos___ · 2 pointsr/apple

Thanks for your answer - do you go over 60hz?

i use the normal dvi-d (looks like this) and this Adapter (sorry it's in germen) - i'm not sure if there is a way to get over 60 hz with thunderbolt (found really nothing in the internet).
I tested the monitor on my roomates windows7 and he can go at 144hz with the same cable but without the adapter (so the monitor isn't broken). Even in bootcamp I just can't use more than 60hz.

The grafic card is an intel iris pro 5200 - but I think that it should be able to handle a higher refresh rate, when it can handle a retina display :/

u/ESCAPE_PLANET_X · 2 pointsr/techsupport

You need a dual link adapter. Like this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16812329326

Notice it says "Active adapter that converts both Single-Mode and Dual Mode (DP++) Displayport output"

You will need a dual link DVI cable to make the adapter work as well. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/BlueRigger-Digital-Dual-Link-Cable-Black/dp/B009WA4EBU/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_23_tr_t_3?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=S0JADZRX48B3Y2NH5GW6&th=1

All in all, the gist is. You are crippling your cards output by using the wrong cables/adapters.

If your card looks like this one: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages/Article/2471/content/small_nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-5.JPG

Get a DVI-D Dual link cable for Monitor 1. Then get a DP-> Dual Link DVI-D active adapter for Monitor two with a Dual Link DVI cable to complete the connection.

You can ALSO try using HDMI, but that is a monitor specific mess I don't recommend wasting your time with.

This is the one I ended up getting: Accell B143B-003B UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 Cable with Locking Latch - 3.3 Feet (1 Meter), Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0163LN18M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.7u9ybTV2AME1

I think it was recommended on here somewhere. It works fine for me on a 4K monitor. I would think any that have good reviews should be fine.

u/xPURE_AcIDx · 2 pointsr/hardware

get a mini DVI to DVI cable, and a DVI cable. Convert the 3.5mm to RCA then pick up one of these(there is a DVI/RCA input HDMI out)

Edit: just noticed it was mini dvi out and had grammar errors.

u/nickolision · 2 pointsr/buildapc

So you need Display Port to DVI because those two only supports 144hz. That's for your main monitor. HDMI to HDMI is fine too. I provided links to the cables.

You would be better convert the DVI on your GPU to HDMI on the monitor.

Going from DVI TO DisplayPort I believe requires an active adapter that will be more expensive.

The many DVI to DisplayPort are uni-directional when you look online and can only go from a Source (Displayport) to Destination (DVI). Like this one

I bought a brand new one but wouldn't have any issues going with a refurb...you may have some physical blemishes but they should be minor scuffs, if any.

What happens is that you can get a brand new computer from the apple store and return it within 15 days. At that point they can't sell it as new so it goes back and they clean it, inspect it and certify it.

Another thing would be having to buy a video cord in case you want to work with a larger screen. You would need HDMI, DVI, or VGA but the cost is minimal!

Let me know, either here or PM, if you have further questions.

If it is DisplayPort 1.2 then you can technically get a 2560 x 1600 monitor to do 120Hz off of a single cable (of course, your graphics card will need to support it) [source].

The R9 390 might be your bottleneck for this device, looking at benchmarks for it, where in Tomb Raider specifically the average fps for a 1080p monitor at max settings was 50 and the average for a 1440p monitor was 30. You will sit somewhere inbetween there with your resolution on the highest settings [source].

I use these DP 1.2 cables and haven't had a problem yet.

u/MYCRAFTisbest · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

OK. So you can ether by a DVI converter for the display port or for the HDMI port. HDMI and DVI cables are actually very close.

EDIT: Also just as a note, this isn't a question of maybe this will fix the issue. The GPU 100% needs the monitor to be plugged into a port on it, not on the motherboard. This is your issue and the GPU cannot do anything until you plug something into it.

u/nonelot · 1 pointr/wacom

AFAIK, the only way to get 1440p (aside from native USB-C support) on that device is with a Display Port to Mini DisplayPort cable. HDMI converters won't work.

From personal experience, even with the right DP to mDP cable, the Cintiq Pro 16 is extremely finicky about staying at 1440p. Every time you boot Windows/Linux, you'll have to manually go through a routine which includes power cycling the device itself to reach 1440p resolution.

Unless you have a computer with native USB-C + DisplayPort Alternate Mode support (mostly newer laptops), I definitely do not recommend getting the Cintiq Pro 16 if you have the intention of using the device at 1440p. If you're still intent on 1440p and have a mDP port, then I can recommend this cable since I know it works (with the previously stated caveats.)

Even at 1440p, high DPI was an issue for me. This was my fault, but I thought the experience would be better than it was. For example, I prefer Krita over Photoshop, and Krita has limited support for high DPI on Windows/Linux. For the most part, using the device at 1440p when app support was limited wasn't an encouraging experience.

I ended up trying the Cintiq Pro 16 for a limited time and simply returned it because of how disappointed I was. It has some potential, but when you pay $1,500 for something like that, then I expect a relatively seamless experience.

u/pincushiondude · 1 pointr/Surface

I'm sure it can, but you will almost certainly need an active MDP-DLDVI adapter (the one that requires the adapter to be plugged into a USB socket for power as well as the mini displayport port). The Apple one runs $100, there are others but they're not much less when new - you might be able to find them for less on ebay, etc.

The ~$20 'claimed active' cables won't give you WQHD or 30" panel native res. They'll only go up to the single-link limit, i.e. FHD.

u/tomatogoatee · 1 pointr/wacom

First off, and I found this out the hard way, simply buying a PCI-E USB-c card would not have worked. It needs to support DisplayPort 1.2 and not just USB 3.1.

I'm using the first-gen Link and I use an Accell miniDP to DP cable to get 4K on my MSP. It's my understanding the Link Plus doesn't need anything fancy to do 4K out of the box, but if you're looking for a cable that is known to work with 4K@60, the I suggest this Accell brand cable. It's the one that I use and have zero problems.

Do both of your monitors support DVI? If so, think about a second cable.

u/99_Problems · 1 pointr/Monitors

Your monitor won't accept 144 Hz over HDMI, so you're stuck using DVI. Keep in mind we're going to need DUAL LINK DVI, single link can't do 144Hz.

Now, since your PC doesn't have DVI, this is gonna be quite expensive.
Mini-DP to Dual-Link DVI adapters are active, which means they have a bunch of electronics inside. Looking around a bit it looks like the starting price for a legit adapter is at least $75.

EDIT: Here's an adapter with good reviews and people reporting it will indeed do 1080p@144Hz. (Amazon link)

For that extra $75-$100, you can return the monitor (if you just got it) and get a better model like the XL2430T, which includes Displayport. Then you just need a cheap ($10) adapter for MiniDP-to-DP.

tl;dr Do your research next time before you go out and buy stuff you can't even connect properly to your computer.

u/gzunk · 1 pointr/buildapc

Not quite a "simple" DP>DVI converter, since it has to be active like this one for single link DVI (up to 1920x1080), or this one for dual link DVI (up to 2560x1440) or this one for HDMI.

It has to be active, because passive converters rely on the GPU sending out DVI or HDMI signals from the DisplayPort (using DisplayPort++, that's what the ++ means), so it's not really DisplayPort.

Technically, some Radeon cards only have two clocks to drive external monitors, so you can only use two legacy (DVI, HDMI) monitors at the same time. If the monitors share the same resolution and refresh rate they might be able to share the same clock, depending on the board manufacturer.

DisplayPort is clockless, so you can attach as many of those as you can fit, or if you use an active adapter then the clock on the GPU isn't used and it's generated by the adapter, so again you can use as many as you can fit.

look for ones that have "Active" in the name. Also look at reviews. Check that they specifically mention using modern cards that only have digital out, like the 1050 Ti, and that it works with that card. They often also has a box around the VGA part that houses the translation chip.

Here is an example of what to look for.

Note: I have no idea if the linked adapter is good or not. Active adapters have a chip inside them that translates the signal. Because of these chips the cheaper ones can break quite easily. Normal prices are 10-25 euro.

I run three monitors, all different resolutions, for multitasking. I have my main, center monitor connected to my GTX 970 via DVI. My 970 has one DVI, one mini HDMI, and 3 mini DP outputs.
To run the other two monitors, I'm using my processors (i5 3550) integrated graphics. One monitor is connected via DVI, and the other by VGA/D-Sub.

I want to connect all three of my monitors to my 970, so I don't have to use the iGPU at all and avoid some driver and compatibility headaches. Preferably, I would just want to use an adapter to have the mini DP ports on my 970 go to the DVI in ports on my other two monitors. None of these monitors support HDMI or DP of any variant.

Oh damn, it didn't replace the link. I noticed that it was DVI-D and found another one. Maybe this could work for you?
Yeah, well then the only way is to live with it, since the ports are prioritized in the hardware / driver and thus you can't change their order. :/

u/Yaahh · 1 pointr/techsupport

So I got this one. I guess it's not one with a chip if it was this cheap..

https://www.amazon.com/DVI-VGA-GANA-Converter-Supporting/dp/B06XFR74K2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527100500&sr=8-1&keywords=gana+dvi+to+vga

So lets review my options:

2nd monitor has a VGA and DVI-D port. So far used VGA-DVI-I but new MB only has DVI-D and GPU (1070 ti) has 1 DVI-D, HDMI and DP ports. Since it's bad to use onboard and GPU my only option is to use the DVI-D cable of my main monitor and the port on my GPU for my 2nd monitor and get a DP cable for my main monitor to still have 144hz?

Just as Streichholzschachtel said you would need active DisplayPort adapter.

Just a few hours ago, I replied the following on a similar thread, which could help you pick adapter if you decides to get one:

A while back, on a multi-monitor setup, I've used this HIS Mini-DisplayPort to DVI Adapter AMD Eyefinity-ready and it worked flawlessly right out of the box(at first i tried this Accell B087B-006B UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Single-Link Active Adapter ATI Certified, which did not work, even though it was ATI certified).

Hey r/buildapc! I just finished my build including the GTX 1080 and ran into a small issue. :(

My monitor hookup used a VGA connection which is not supported by NVIDIA anymore...So I bought this adapter...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009MPB2M4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

...in hopes it would work. Silly me didn't read the reviews before purchasing cause it was so cheap I don't really care, but it turns out the adapter simply does not work for converting VGA to DVI 24+1 pin since the GTX 1080 doesn't support DVI 24+5 connections.

My question is...is there any adapter or device that can allow me to hook up my VGA monitor to the new GTX 1080?

Thanks in advance, I hope this question was simple enough for this thread!

EDIT: Since the masterrace is rude. I have an HDMI Monitor, the VGA one is going to act as my second monitor. I just need to know if it is possible.

You just need $20 in adapters. This one and this one.

u/radman0x · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

alright, I'll give it a go, do you possibly have a link?

EDIT: NVM, already ordered this and this.

What sort of issues were you getting with your setup? I'm also hitting an issue where the monitor won't ever wake once it goes to sleep, even when only it's connected...

u/tinselsnips · 1 pointr/buildapc

If your HDMI monitor is 1080p/60hz, any eight dollar adapter should do you; if it's more than 1080p or more than 60hz, you need a more expensive active adapter.

Just ordered this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0163LN18M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

someone made a vid & reddit thread a few months ago about how this works with the 16 and is capable for 4k if plugged into port 1. obviously i dont care about 4k because the 13 only supports full HD, i just need a minidisplayport to displayport conversion that works. because this startech trash does not.

I think supports 144hz as well and is a bit cheaper for a longer cable.

u/Bahamute · 1 pointr/hardware

I've used this and had no issues at 1440p 144 Hz.

u/LaRock0wns · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

If you need a longer cable, here is one that works at 3440x1440 @ 100hz

I had the DVI running from the monitor to my old Radeon 7770 and it worked fine. The DVI cable I use is a DVI-D Dual Link. I tried both DVI ports on the video card and neither seemed to pick up the monitor. Mind if you go a bit into more detail about the BIOS switch? Where would I find it for a graphics card? All I know about a BIOS switch is my keyboard's bios switch but that's about it.

I'm starting to think that the monitor might not be able to run at whatever the video card is trying to output. It seems to work on lower resolutions (I need to do more testing, I will get back tomorrow with results as it's already late here).

Hello!
that 1050 id say is a wothwhile upgrade, any 1050 with display port will do. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0163LN18M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 here is the brand of mini to full size adapter that I personally use with my cintiq pro 16 and it works flawlessly.

On your second point, they seem to cater to laptops more than desktop computers. You can go windows or Apple with your laptop and you will probably either have a mini-displayport or usbc with alternate display mode to save space, its desktops with far more IO space that always gets shafted in this regard.

I was in the same situation only with DVI instead of HDMI and went through two adapters before I found the right one. Here is the one I got (and works perfectly) http://amzn.com/B004RFGK30

Let me see f I can find an HDMI version...

edit: Here ya go. http://amzn.com/B00DOZHL82 That adapter will let you plug in an ordinary HDMI cable to it.

Some do, some don't. They look like this.

I have 3x ASUS VE248s, they cost me $200 a piece. 24" each, 1080P, and the picture quality is excellent. They also look beautiful. LED-backlit, no ghosting, etc. I think they even have built-in speakers, but I don't use them. I'd very, very highly recommend these.

By the way, you will need 2x ACTIVE DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapters. The "ACTIVE" is emphasized because plain passive adapters will not work. For example, the white Apple DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter is passive, and so is practically every other adapter that does not explicitly say "Active" in the description. Better yet, if the description includes "Eyefinity," then you know it will be compatible, e.g. "EYEFINITY Mini DisplayPort to Single Link-DVI adapter."

This goes for monitor brand/model you buy; one will be connected with DVI, and the other two with the active mini displayport adapters. Here is an example of an "active" adapter you can buy:

http://www.amazon.com/HIS-HMDPSDVIEYE-Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter-Eyefinity-ready/dp/tech-data/B004RFGK30/ref=de_a_smtd

or, if you prefer Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999033

You can also do what I did and use HDMI for one of the monitors since the ASUS monitor model I listed above supports HDMI input. This will save you $20 since you'll only have to purchase one Active/Eyefinity-capable adapter, but the downside is that you'll have to disable scaling in your Catalyst Command Center (a 1-minute task -- you literally drag a slider from the default "15%" to "0%" and everything works perfectly). I have 1 monitor connected with DVI, one with HDMI, and the last with an Active Mini DisplayPort adapter. With this configuration, you can add a fourth monitor (1x DVI, 1x HDMI, 2x active DisplayPort to DVI) if you'd like, but this is unnecessary for most purposes.

Hope this helped. Again, I'd put my balls on the line for the VE248's, I spend 8+ hours per day staring at these guys and I wouldn't replace them with anything else.

Send me a message if you'd like any more help with this.
