I am really sorry this happened to you, if you can make it to harrys hill this weekend I will give you a small care package.

It won't make up for your plants in any sort of way. But it will be something, and I believe sunday is donation day, so won't have to pay anything for admission.

edit: If anyone else is reading, remember rules 1 and 2 of growing cannabis; don't tell anyone. Doesn't matter that it's legal now. Best case scenario when ripped off is it happens like OP, worst case is you end up dead or with a gun in your face over some plants.

https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Motion-Alert-System-Chamberlain/dp/B00YAIACR4/

That with extra sensors works very well for motion detection with very minimal false alerts, I believe this model works comparably, but haven't used it personally;

https://www.amazon.com/Guardline-Wireless-Driveway-Weatherproof-Detector/dp/B00HFZUKGM/

If you got tons of cash to throw at this issue, the best method of detection is with Seismic sensors like the military uses, however these are fairly hard to find and very costly.

Do what others are saying. In the mean time get and install a security flip lock to show CPS that you have taken measures to secure the apartment. For CPS make sure your pantry is full of food, it’s one of the things they look at.

Someone else said get an alarm. I used this magnetic alarm for my doors and windows.

u/Phoenix1294 · 19 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

I would send her a proactive text: "we are not giving you our address, we do not want contact with you for the forseeable future, if you show up at our home we will consider it trespassing and call the police."

THEN, when she does show up (and she will, like you said public records and all that jazz) you not only have it on cameras, but you have that text to show the police that this is NOT a concerned mother this is a woman throwing a fit because she's losing power and control over her son.

I'm sure a lot of people have pointed you to homedefense or security stuff but I would also recommend a driveway alarm for the extra head's up.

u/ziburinis · 14 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

Can you put in a door chain? Or the bar lock/latch that hotels have? These won't keep out someone trying to rob you (you can release them with a string or an envelope or a rubber band, depending on the type (chain or latch). But it would prevent his mother from just walking in.

Or better yet, and this way you don't have to drill into anything, get a wireless door alarm. They sell them so that you can hear if a kid gets a door open or an adult with dementia opens it. If you're not in the states, there should be something similarly available to you but this is the kind of thing I'm talking about. You stick them to both sides of the door, they are magnetic so when that magnetic stops touching the other one (when a door opens) the alarm goes off. https://www.amazon.com/Wsdcam-Wireless-Anti-Theft-Control-Security/dp/B00PYG7LH0 You can get two, one for the front and back doors, that way you each have a remote control to turn it off before you open the door when you get home and you can leave them on when you are gone. Easy to turn on and off for visitors, should scare the shit out of MIL first time she tries it.

Your next place, have some keys made that you keep in a special spot, like in a safe or a safe deposit box or heck just locked up in a file cabinet. Make copies at the key copy place that use blanks stamped with "no copies allowed" and use those as your daily keys. That way if he "misplaces" his keys at his mother's (like she hid them) she can't get a copy made because the key is stamped with that. Your master key is kept locked up in case you need to make a copy for some reason, definitely don't get rid of it.

u/Hydrangeas0813 · 14 pointsr/LetsNotMeet

Get some of these. You can get them even cheaper at walmart. I set our windows to alarm mode and doors to dong mode when I was in a ground floor apartment.

u/Vermonter802 · 12 pointsr/CCW

I have a stand alone alarm system that I installed in my apartment and I also had one in my previous apartment. Nothing gets screwed in to the wall, I use industrial strength two way tape. I also have stickers on all windows and doors on the first floor.

I have the alarm for their safety. If it sounds off, they should not, I repeat not, enter the premises. I had one land lord tell me that I could not do that, and I explained to them that I could and they should check the state laws. If I needed repairs I would sometimes get up to three calls from them asking if my alarm was off before entering. It makes for a great relationship and sets the boundaries. I mean, how would they like it if you entered their home unannounced.

Just my 2 cents.

-- Edit --

Here is a link to the alarm system I have:

u/DeeDee304 · 8 pointsr/homedefense

I would put up the 'Chunky doesn't live here' sign with a nice big red store bought 'No trespassing' sign underneath it on every window and door in the back of your apartment. I think that even illiterate crackheads would probably know what 'No trespassing' means. I would not mention anything about the police; someone might consider that a challenge.

I would also think about some inexpensive upgrades to security, especially on the back of your apartment. Use a security bar like this, or cut a piece of broomstick to block the track if it is a sliding door, and get longer screws for the doorjamb. Amazon also has some cheap, 120db door and window alarms that have excellent reviews. They are battery operated with no wiring. Could you do more with more cash? Most certainly. But for $50 or less you can upgrade your security pretty significantly. edit:formatting

I think what you want is an electric strike plate. This one uses 12v power so you'd need to install a power supply and a switch. You could even use something like this and control it from anywhere in the house.

u/Ziac45 · 7 pointsr/SeattleWA

Tell the landlord, you could probably file a police report but it won't do anything. Using a board to stop a sliding door/window from opening is actually better than a lock for them. I picked up some of these to put on windows around my house. They are incredibly loud and just stick on so that you don't have to hope to wake up should they try again.

u/Bmorehon · 6 pointsr/breakingmom

Dropcam is kind of expensive, but it is loaded with features and apparently works with something called 'nest' which controls your lights and monitors your smoke detectors and shit, which I didn't even know was a thing. So apparently I've been living under a rock, but I know dropcam is highly recommended for a multi-purpose baby/nanny/security camera. I first heard about it when looking at video baby monitors (which are a rip-off in my opinion).

I've got a pretty fun set up in my Sunroom

Lights: some basic string lights, and a couple Ikea MAGNARP lamps plugged into some iHome Smart Plugs, along with Hue Full color bulbs in the ceiling with a Hue Dimmer Switch

The dimmer switch can not control anything but Phillips Hue bulbs but I wanted to use it to set a scene that turned on the string lights and lamps so I set the second press of the dimmer switch to turn the hue lights to a 1% brightness.
From within the Elgato Eve App I set an automation triggered by the Hue lights being set to 1% that turns the lamps and string lights on.

Fans:

It can get pretty hot in the sunroom in the summer with a lot of activity from booth the people and the cat in the house. So I set up a system with Eve Room Sensor, Eve Door Sensor (used on windows) and iHome Smart Plugs to automate 2 fans set up in windows on opposite sides of the room. The Room sensor tracks the air quality and if it is low the fans will kick on, as long as the windows are open, (tracked by door sensor)
when the quality is good again, the fans turn off automatically, and they don't turn on while the string lights are on, since they are kinda loud.

Unfortunately our AC unit has a NEMA 6-15P plug so its not compatible with HomeKit.

The Eufy Doorbell Camera is what I’m leaning towards. It saves video locally (to 4gbs of internal storage), though there is an optional subscription.

There is no wireless option, and it doesn’t ring your current wired doorbell.

Again, I haven’t used this, but is what I’m leaning towards.

OP, you can easily install electric doors with smarts for way less.

The key ingredient is an electric door strike.
https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Mechanism-Security-Intercom-Systems/dp/B00164SFFQ
Ever get buzzed into a business? They were using an electric strike. Emergency exit handles and such work like before.
Usually you get a lock that's always locked, power or not (fail secure) - then when somebody wants in, current is applied to the strike's electro magnet, which opens the strike, and bam, you can open the door.

Now. What do you want to be smart? How do folks come in? Keypad? Biometric? RFID smart card?

Google around for DIY access control smart door strike. Also, this solution is called "access control", instead of "smart Lock".

Here are some kits on Amazon: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.com/slp/door-access-control-system/pt3mx6t56dan6vv&ved=2ahUKEwjD-OCZzp3iAhUJ2qwKHfbfDh4QFjARegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw0NDQnHOO_PZzQl8j2BpaNt&cshid=1557925988852

No traditional dimmer will work. But I suggest the Logitech POP switch system. Everyone in my house and guests find it simple enough to use and understand.

And my POP switches work more consistently than even Lifx own app. Works every time, and fast.

I have found non-smart but programmable items (like your roomba) tend to be much more affordable and much easier to install and use.

You can get sensors for lights (bathroom humidity, movement, etc) that are pretty cheap/easy to install (even timers aren't too bad).

Look into more programmable items than wifi/connected if you want to save money. A Nest is a great start, and you can connect lights/garage/etc to it, but it goes way beyond that. Set it and forget it are great!

Various links below for ideas, but not necessarily these products. I've bought some from Amazon/Lowes/etc and have had mixed success. I'd check product reviews.

For Hallways and stuff

Bathroom fan/light

Wifi/Remote Lighting

Locks for Front door

For Blinds/etc
-- I've not used this, but my friends have something similar and its pretty neat

Good luck, let me know if you do any of these, and have any success with them.

Any of the Circle 2 Wired cameras will support this (Wire-Free/wireless variants do not).

The HomeKit Secure Video update is also compatible with the Window, Magnetic, and Plug mounts.

I got in home automation for two reasons: I want lights/music on when I get home and I want my door to unlock itself safely and reliably. Lights and music have been a breeze, but unfortunately the Schlage Zwave lock I want is $200 so when you tack on a controller and apps you can get into a pricey situation pretty quickly. Here are some options I've gone over.

NFC/BTLE. As someone else mentioned you have things like the Locitron, Kevo, and my personal favorite, Samsung's NFC deadbolt solution. Combine it with the NFC Ring and you have a pretty succinct solution, albeit still not hands free. Plus, rings aren't everyone's bag. That said, you can either just use the keypad, your phone (if it's NFC equipped) or use the included RFID tags. I'm sure you can also get aftermarket NFC tags and have them sewn into a jacket, bag, or just throw one in your wallet if you want. Again, though, you have to be close to your door to unlock it. Same with the Kevo I believe, you have to physically touch it for it to unlock it.

On the Zwave side of things Schlage, Kwikset and a few others make very nice digital keypads. I worry about the security of these in general. Not because I think someone's going to sit outside my house and hack into the door lock through my SmartThings hub, but rather because I worry about false triggering. There are a number of combinations and variables you can utilize to make sure you and only you can access your front door:

  • Cell tower recognition
  • Home Wifi connectivity
  • Z-wave Sensors
  • Strategically placed multi sensors
  • NFC tags (i.e.- if your phone is connected to wifi, your phone is within your home cell tower range and you scan a tag before you leave your car, the door unlocks)
  • Geofencing (not all that reliable and uses a ton of battery)

Keep in mind I've not implemented any of this and my advice is purely speculative but the ideas are sound :). I'm sure you could set a timer to have the door lock after X seconds, but I prefer manually locking just to make sure it's actually done right.
u/bookish_mama30 · 4 pointsr/beyondthebump

Ohhhhh I see. I’m sorry, I’m running very sleep deprived at the moment and didn’t realize it was a lever. Even though it’s a rental, can you change out the door knob and put the original back on when you move? Explain the extreme safety situation to your landlord? Sorry, you’ve prob already thought of this.

Alternately, you could get one of those cheap alarm systems that are just magnets and make a really loud alarm when door is opened. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Personal-Security-Window-Wireless-Burglar/dp/B0727QX9SC/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=alarm+system+for+home+magnet&qid=1555162573&s=gateway&sr=8-5

The best I've been able to find is the Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Multi-Sensor (DSB05-ZWUS). Note: not the newer models, for which the motion sensor doesn't work outdoor. You'll also need a zwave switch to control the lights (I use a GE 12724).

With a zwave dimmer switch, a zwave motion sensor, and a normal outdoor light fixture, I've set mine up to turn on the lights at 30% brightness at sunset, and off at sunrise. When motion is detected and the lights are already on, I have the brightness increase to 100% for 10 minutes, then back to 30%.

The Aeon sensor is definitely not ideal. I looked far and wide for a better outdoor motion sensor but wasn't able to find one. Others have suggested using a traditional outdoor light that has a motion sensor built in and detect the load increase to trigger an event. I decided not to go that route.

u/BradliusMaximus · 3 pointsr/SelfDefense

First off: IANAL. I have several points to make in response to your post. Before I make any; however, I want to start by saying that I am not trying to hurt your feelings, offend you, condescend you, etc., so if I write anything that comes across to you like that please give me the benefit of the doubt and assume it's accidental.

For starters, I get the impression based on some of your comments that you haven't read or studied the relevant self defense laws in your area (each state has some variation). This is something I'd highly recommend you do. Your attitude on weapons (firearms in particular) may change after you do, but more on this in a bit. One of the best sources for this information that I can recommend is a book titled: "The Law of Self Defense" by attorney Andrew Branca. This book covers the legal aspects of self defense and is written for the lay-person (non-lawyers); primarily from the point of view as a gun owner but he also covers other weapons and non-deadly force. This book also isn't very expensive (the kindle edition is $10 for example) and you might find the hard copy at your local library. The reason I recommend it is that I believe it will help alleviate some of your fears about owning a firearm--specifically as it relates to getting into trouble with the law, and you will learn a great deal about self defense. I'll give you an example:

As a female you can argue in probably 99% or more of circumstances that you are in what the law will call a "disparity of force" situation if attacked by your average male aggressor. What disparity of force means is that if attacked by someone who is significantly stronger than you, even if they don't have a "weapon," (as most men are assumed to be when compared to a woman) you can legally use deadly force to defend yourself because their strength advantage over you reasonably creates the fear in your mind that if you don't use deadly force to defend yourself you will lose the fight and face death or grave bodily harm (grave bodily harm includes things like rape, loss of consciousness, broken bones, etc). There are many other important legal concepts to know, so, again, I'd highly suggest the book.

Another point I'd like to address are the 4 weapons you've listed. Of these 4 weapons,3 of them are considered deadly weapons in the eyes of the law. I'm afraid that you're guilty of the misconception that knives and bats aren't as bad as a firearm in the eyes of the law--this is not true (I blame Hollywood and the media for this). Edged weapons and bludgeons are considered deadly weapons alongside firearms since they're all capable of causing death or grave bodily harm. Pepper spray is the only less lethal weapon included in your list. For the record it's worth noting that pepper spray has and can kill people (mostly people that suffer from respiratory problems like asthma), but in self defense situations it will most likely be regarded as a less than lethal weapon.

Based on all that above and for 100 other reasons I can't emphasize enough that you reconsider your position on firearms. It's my strongly held belief that every responsible woman should own and be trained to use a firearm. For one thing they aren't as expensive as you might think (a good one can be had for as little as $3-400 new), and your life is certainly worth more than a few hundred bucks. It's also hard to argue that there's a better or more effective deadly force tool for protecting yourself from a violent attacker. It's the single best tool for giving women a fighting chance against violence. Even if money is tight I'd still highly recommend that you save your pennies and invest in a firearm ASAP.

As for other suggestions, you definitely need some form of an alarm to alert you if your doors or windows are opened. Dogs are definitely a great option. Crime data shows that dog owners are burglarized less compared to non dog owners. Monitored alarms are also good for being loud and auto dialing the police if in trouble. Many today have a feature where if you're forced into your home under duress you can punch in a special code that appears to deactivate the alarm but is actually recognized as a distress call and will dispatch police. If you can't afford a monitored alarm system get something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M30SKM0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_gbsIybF9THZ54. I'm not necessarily endorsing this particular model but you want something that will let off a loud sound if a door or window opens after you arm them before going to sleep. Also, I'd get something like this to make it difficult to open your door to begin with: http://m.homedepot.com/p/Master-Lock-Dual-Function-Adjustable-Door-Security-Bar-265DCCSEN/100210730. I have a heavier duty version that I can't quickly find a link to but this should give you an idea--something to make the door hard to open.

I use SensorPush. Got it on Amazon. The sensor itself is $50 but it is only bluetooth unless you buy the SensorPush gateway. I need the wifi option because I'm away from home at least half the year so I had to buy the wifi gateway which is $99. It was easy to set up and I've never had an issue with it. I can't speak to the bluetooth abilities because I never used it but I'm sure it's 1000 times better than that crappy Boveda Butler I had before.

Alright! So if it were me, I would do a camera covering the front drive or the windows to the basement if you have any.

Cost: $36

This little guy supports a range of programs and email alerts.

Then I would cover the windows to the basement with these. They scream if they sense the glass has been broken or vibrated.

Cost: $25 for two.

Add in 10 magnetic alarms on windows and any door you want.

Cost: $11

And to finish it off, setup this wireless motion detector in your basement and you can it set to email on motion alerts. You can even set it for certain times when you know you are not home.

Cost $40

Total: $112

Or you could do an all in one system.

Get a wink hub. This thing will connect to your smart phone and will tell you everything that is going on in your house by whatever you attach to it. Its pretty cool.

Cost: $70

Get the door/ window alarms for it that connect to the hub.

Cost: $65 for two

Add in a motion detection in the basement that connects to the hub.

Cost: $28

Total: $163 Barely over budget.

You can even connect that camera to it thats listed at the top of this post. Wink connects all the compatible products and allows you to control/access them from your smart phone with alerts.

Let me know if you have any questions! Hope this helps.

u/sweharris · 3 pointsr/smarthome

A sliding door, as in the supermarket, would be easy to make "smart". Just replace the motion sensor with a wifi controlled unit. So instead of having a smart lock, the same type of logic could slide open the door.

That's not too helpful for a home, though. For this you would need an electronic door strike (similar to some office security systems - eg https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Mechanism-Security-Intercom-Systems/dp/B00164SFFQ ) and a motor. So when triggered the latch would let the door open and the motor would swing it; a heavier version of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLzhKSH5cBc perhaps.

Just to give you a pricing idea, I got quotes from Serena and Hunter Douglas. Serena was $900 per window and Hunter Douglas was about $600 per window. I don't have the measurements anymore but these were very average sized windows especially for a 1950s house.
I've been looking for some cheaper versions on Amazon without a lot of luck.
I was thinking about trying MySmartBlinds. It's $204 per window if you get the solar panel and switch. Otherwise $99 alone per window. Anyone tried these?
MySmartBlinds Automation Kit Motorized Blinds for iOS Devices, Turn Ordinary Blinds into Smart Home Blinds https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M9G5Y7C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_btpPzb8F04E4P

I really wanted the the top down bottom up blinds but those are even more impossible to find. Hunter Douglass said my windows weren't wide enough for them.
I know this doesn't answer your question but hope it helps.

Edit: just adding that Hunter Douglas is supposed to work with both Amazon and Smartthings

SmartThings Motion Sensor

u/AdamDe27 · 2 pointsr/homedefense

I live in an apartment as well and was unsure about how to add things to make the place more secure while not breaching anything in the lease.

  • First thing I decided on was the Skylink SC1000. It's completely wireless except for the main panel, and everything goes up with Double Sided foam tape. You can add sensors on, add an additional siren (I have a second one in my bedroom window cutout so I hear it in the middle of the night, and its also audible outside for passerby's to hear). I also have a second panel in the bedroom for arming/unarming. It also has "home" and "away" modes so you can set a 0 second delay on the siren and not include motion detectors when home or locking up for the night. Super affordable and very easy to install and use. They also offer a remote dialer but check with your local 911 PSAP to see if they are ok for use. (in my area they are not, but the dialer calls a relative). I've given the code to my landlord although with 24 hours notice required for non-emergency 'drop-ins', it hasn't been needed.

  • Number 2: I spoke to the landlord and changed the locks and upgraded to a Schlage deadbolt and knob. You know they aren't changing the locks when people move out so there is no telling who has a key still. I just had to give one to my landlord. Schlage also gives you the tool to 're-key' a lock if you key should become lost.

  • Number 3: I put a Brinks outdoor locking lever on my bedroom door. I wanted to ensure a safe place to retreat in the event of a home invasion and I sleep sounder knowing the door is locked and there's a barrier creating a delay between the alarm sounding and someone being in my face.

  • Number 4: A relatively inexpensive IP Camera with Pan/Tilt/Zoom in the living room that covers the bedroom door and main door depending on angle, and another inside my living room window pointed at the walk up for the building.

The last thing that is still on my wish list is a Peephole camera. For now I just throw a hat over the peephole to keep the light from showing whether i'm home or not or if my face just got right against the door.

My last piece of advice is that if there is a landline phone, call your 911 center's non-emergency line and ask to test the information received by their system when 911 is dialed. With VOIP, the information could be totally wrong and even misdirected to the incorrect agency. If cell phones are the only thing in use at the house, make sure the cell phone company has the correct address on file. If a cell phone calls 911 and it sounds like there is an obvious emergency (eg: someone screaming) but the person on the line is unable to give clear information or an address, they can contact the cell provider and get a billing address. If the bill is sent elsewhere, an alternative address can usually be added to the account.

I bought a Fortress security system off amazon a couple years back after i needed something right away due to a couple breakins, but didnt have a big budget.

It was about 200 dollars, and came with 20 door and window sensors, 3 PIRs, and a couple sirens/keypads.

Its super old wireless tech, and obviously made in china, buts it alarms, and has monitored perfectly.

From my knowledge about the Boveda Butler, it's Bluetooth only and requires you to be within 30 feet to connect. There is no WiFi connection to use your home router to connect and monitor your different sensors using the Internet. Unless you left a device running next to it that updates the app? Correct me if I'm wrong but that's leaving a PC on with Bluetooth, monitoring 24/7 while you're away.

The only one that I've ever seen that uses WiFi is this: SensorPush Sensor with the EDIT-$100 WiFi bridge: SensorPush Gateway. A pricey combo however it sounds like it's what you're looking for. Not sure if it can track multiple sensors.

I stopped at the Apple Store after work, and they aren't even on the online store. They were in the back of the store still in boxes. It's cheaper to get it from Amazon . For $79.99 you get the hub and two buttons. At the Apple Store it's $59.99 for the hub and one button. An additional button is $39.99 . So you save $20 on Amazon.

Edit: The version on Amazon is the NON Homekit compliant version.

I highly recommend the Ring WiFi enabled video doorbell. It notifies you if someone trips the motion sensor and you can see and speak wirh them even if you are away from home. Even before I had this, I would never, ever open the door unless I knew it was someone I was expecting. You can still speak to people through the door if you don't want them to think the house is empty.

Hey, yeah I got them on Amazon. They're not super cheap, but much cheaper than losing product. They are not super fast so if temperature suddenly raises they will take probably 15-30 minutes, as the probe is encased inside, but for my purpose they're pretty great. At one point I was actually in contact with the company, talking about testing a new product they were working on that was faster, but I haven't kept on it.

I highly recommend that anyone reading this, if you have no security system at a minimum pick up some simple magnetic alarms.

Here are some cheap ones.

If you are not home the loud alarm may be enough to chase them away, especially if you live in an apartment building where people might come looking.

But the more important part is that no one can come in while you're home without you knowing immediately. No one can sneak in at night or (definitely a concern to women) attack you by surprise.

u/teshreve · 2 pointsr/gpumining

I am using these for temp monitoring: http://www.sensorpush.com/#products

They are not cheap or cheap but they are really sweet. The app is well thought out, responsive, easy.

They claim IFTTT support is coming, but for now I just have the app alarm me at a given temp. Combined with power monitoring plugs for the fans and the rigs I can fairly effectively avoid any doomsday scenarios. I am able to see if fans are drawing power and shut rigs off remotely. Using TPlink HS110 smart plugs.
Also have my GPUs thermally limited to 75c w/ Afterburner as a backup.
Tested this by remotely turning off the axial fans. The GPUs throttled way down, staying at 75'ish. Then the app alerted me. Another few minutes and I turned the fans back on at 120f.

After they get their cloud API, IFTTT enabled I'd probably have Sensorpush shut down my rigs at 120f or so.

Thanks for the replies guys but I think I've finally found a solution for my needs. To anyone who might be interested, I've ordered a Skylink kit with an emergency dialer I plan to run through an OBi100 using Google Voice. This way, when an alarm is triggered, I will immediately receive a call and/or program several other numbers to receive a pre-recorded message. This all cost me a flat, $190 with no monthly monitoring fee. I can add sensors, motion detectors, keyfobs, etc. to the system at my leisure.

I'll probably post a review thread in a week or so - pretty excited!

We use 8 of these with Blue Iris recording at 720p 25-30fps, then 2 of these recording at 1080p 30fps (during the day and 10fps at night). . I use the Blue Iris plugin for HomeSeer to monitor whether a camera has dropped offline or something similar like that. You can also set it to send you notifications based on motion/etc (either through Blue Iris itself or through HomeSeer). We also use DoorBird for our doorbell that allows us to get push notifications and talk to the person at the door but also have the (720p) RTSP stream live to Blue Iris as well.

The PC running Blue Iris is this. Somehow the i5 inside works perfectly with only medium-high CPU-usage, even with 10 total HD cameras.

u/DennisQuaaludes · 1 pointr/SelfDefense

I use these on windows in my house downstairs. Just having a loud alarm sound will scare intruders, because it draws attention. They’re really inexpensive, and pretty darn loud.

These are also effective, and inexpensive as well.

You can also hang little bells, or wind chimes in the window that serve a dual purpose of relaxing sounds during the day when the windows are open, as well as an effective noise maker in case someone tries to go through the window.

u/lizard450 · 1 pointr/homedefense

I have a couple of these on a sliding glass door. They work pretty well and they are sensitive enough to trigger when you're opening the door. Problem is if my cat messes with them they can go off.

As for door opening something like this or this

Now granted I'm no guru when it comes to home defense. I live in a nice area where people can leave their bikes out over night unlocked and expect them to be there in the morning.

I have insurance so if I do get robbed I'm covered. I have valuables secured as best as I can since i'm renting. My concern is when my gf or I are home and someone tries to get in or something I want to be awake.

u/Bob_Fucking_Ross · 1 pointr/homedefense

Thank you! I'm looking into it.

I'm also looking at this Fortress Security Store system

u/ZorMonkey · 1 pointr/AskElectronics

There are battery powered motion detectors that dont use wifi, but use Zigbee or ZWave (example). They're meant to be used with a hub (example), but it might be possible to make your own device using a zwave/zigbee shield to convert the zigbee/zwave data to wifi.

Personally if I went this route I'd just buy a hub since thats part of what they do anyways. You have less control obviously, but it works out of the box. Sending to your web server may require IFTTT or something in the middle, but it'd work. That may be more than you're looking to spend though

u/browneyedgirl79 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

We got my husband's 86 year old grandma these and some motion detector lights after something similar happened to her. She didn't want anything too expensive, and we put these on each door and window of her house. She also already had a dog that constantly yips (maltepoo).

u/penguin_drum · 1 pointr/houston

There are alarms that are pretty much just for making a racket when the door opens. I've seen people use them their kids get big enough to reach door knobs. You can put them on most window frames, too, since it's just a matter of the 2 pieces being separated to get the alarm to go off. Like These

And these motion activated cameras you can stick to the wall and hopefully get a 'good enough' image of the person entering.

There aren’t many choices. I really like the Logitech Pop. I had a lot of problems when I first got them, but have since gotten those resolved and they have worked flawlessly since. I bought;

  • This starter pack.

But, from what I’ve been reading, there’s a newer version:

  • This one.

The difference appears to be that this one is Apple HomeKit compatible. I’m looking to buy a new one because I gave mine to my parents to try and it’s working out well for them. I’ll buy this new package to see what happens.
u/teteroon · 1 pointr/amazonecho

u/AmericanSince1776 · 1 pointr/gundeals

Ordered it for $122. Just moved into an apartment and need something lighter and less permanent than a safe. I am considering hooking up this to the inside of the cabinet. I know it’s not nearly as good as a 4 thousand pound steel safe, but it’ll probably be enough to alert someone in my pretty busy apartment complex.

u/WHRMFR · 1 pointr/mac

There are basically 4 different sensor categories for my application.

1. USB logger

This plugs directly into the USB port on the Mac. They range wildly in price, sometimes costing close to $1k (which is way out of my budget).

Examples: TEMPerHUM, Omega, Lascar, Extech, TemperatureAlert, and more here

The problem is that, for whatever reason, these USB loggers are only compatible with Windows. The five above examples are Windows only.

The only logger that I have found that is Mac compatible is the Minnow. However, I spoke with the manufacturer and realized that it is not designed to be a real-time USB logger; the unit will quickly overheat. The workaround is to incorporate a USB relay switch to manually connect/disconnect the Minnow periodically from the Mac.

2. Bluetooth

Examples: Blustream, SensorPush, D'Addario Humiditrak, Eve Degree, and more here

The problem is that all of these products have an iOS app, but no macOS app.

But If I purchased the SensorPush sensor along with the $100 SensorPush WiFi Gateway, I can access the data over the internet.

But there are cheaper WiFi options, like the ConnectSense (won't be shipping until early 2019), Proteus, and La Crosse. But, I am hesitant to fully depend on an internet connection to get the data (i.e., if the internet goes down, then I would lose access to the data, which is not ideal).

3. RF

AcuRite sells a $13 Wireless Temperature and Humidity Sensor (model # 06002M) that transmits every 16 seconds using a 433 MHz wireless signal with a maximum range of 330'. This sensor is inexpensive because it is designed to be used with AcuRite Access and the AcuRite weather station products, which I do not want or need. It's all proprietary.

However, some people have reverse-engineered the radio signal to decode the data stream from this sensor if you have a USB RF receiver.

Examples:

u/IACITE_HOC · 1 pointr/JUSTNOMIL

Maybe you should look into a cheap deterrent for your cabinet. I wouldn't want MIL back in my house after that, but that's not always a realistic option. So you can easily install these on a cabinet and it will either chime or go full on alarm when the door opens. The model I linked even comes with a little remote so you can cut it off when you want to access the cabinet!

u/AgeOfEgos · 1 pointr/homeautomation

For your Blueiris integration, what do you suggest for hardware? For example, in the above product--since it has POE--if I ran just a regular ethernet cable (without POE) into a switch/router--which my media server is also on the same swich--I could in theory just capture that feed to my media server (which acts as a NVR)? I obviously need to do some reading up on Blueiris! I was just originally looking at an established NVR connection.

I'm a zwave guy, and cheap is relative... I have a smattering of the following motion sensors:

Probably overkill for indoor use. They seem a little flakey.. one chews through batteries within days. I think I need to readd it to the network. Small, lots of data: http://www.amazon.com/Aeotec-Aeon-Labs-Z-wave-Multisensor/dp/B00WMEVRRW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1448930377&sr=8-6&keywords=zwave+pir

An interesting device. Also SKU'd as the HSM200. Plugs into an outlet so it may limit where it is useful, but it has a little light that I use to relay status information (the led can not be controlled by OpenHAB, so I do a REST call over to the HS box to control it): http://www.amazon.com/Express-Controls-EZMultiPli-US-EZMultiPli-Multi-Sensor/dp/B00Q3OR0CI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448930401&sr=8-1&keywords=hsm200

This is how I do occupancy of a room (you can enter and leave many times, and if you leave long enough the room will automatically shutdown): https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/3apzcb/openhab_newbie_i_properly_configured_my_zwave/

For the pressure mat.. simple. Is it an apartment or condo? Start by talking to the landlord to see if they'll allow you to have and alarm installed. I did once and the landlord allowed me to deduct most of the cost from a month's rent!

If you can't have an alarm system professionally installed, these kinds of things work pretty well.
http://www.amazon.com/Skylink-SC-1000-Complete-Wireless-System/dp/B003MP93BW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1370012062&sr=8-2&keywords=alarm+system

Use command adhesive strips instead of the adhesive they come with so that when it's time to move you don't have to pull the paint off.

A basic alarm install will probably run about 700-1k, depending on where you live. The roll your own option is certainly cheaper, but the hardwired system has advantages.
