So, I'm guessing there are a lot of folks with adderall prescriptions here. Adderall has what seems to be an under reported side-effect (under reported because it seems like it keeps coming up on here, but I never seen it listed in the main "side-effects" section of drug sites describing adderall). Anyway, take some magnesium. Adderall decreases absorption of magnesium (and potassium and calcium and iron and zinc and folic acid and chromium), so you aren't getting enough and over time it results in muscle issues including tensing and cramping. Probably wouldn't hurt to take some B12, also, as adderall effects your uptake of that as well.

Important: Do NOT take magnesium oxide, as that can interact with adderall in a bad way.

Anyway, I take a magnesium glycinate and have pretty good results with it. I take one of these an hour or two before bed and it works OK for me, but shop around and get one you like. I also take a multi-vitamin with most of those other things in it, but it was limited in the amount of magnesium it had and I was still grinding my teeth at night. Incidentally, taking potassium helped address the leg cramps I was getting, so that's also a thing.

Edit: It'll probably be 2-4 weeks before you really notice the difference. Worth noting that it helps some people sleep. Also worth noting that it helps reduce the effect in some people where they adapt to their dosage over time and require a larger dose.

Exactly. After a long time of dealing with it I started to think I had more of a physical ailment than anxiety. My heart would pound and race and sometimes I'd get twitching or tremors. All seemingly randomly. I'd feel super tired while simultaneously unable to relax. The whole time, there's nothing that I'm ruminating about or mentally/emotionally upset about. It just seems to store up in my body whether I'm aware of a cause or not.

I've found that taking magnesium helps (it's way better than nothing). Forms like L-threonate, glycinate, taurate, malate, etc. are best. Just ordered this formulation after having success with l-threonate.

Checkout this listing of various types: http://fixyourgut.com/magnesium-most-overlooked-mineral-for-improving-health-2/

  • magnesium oxide (worst) -> Not very bioavailable, laxitive
  • magnesium citrate (ok) -> Good bioavailablity, laxitive
  • magnesium glycinate (better) -> Good bioavailablity, not laxitive
  • magnesium taurate (best IMHO) -> Good bioavailablity, not laxitive, best at deilvary to cardiac tissue, also supplies a large does of taurine

Its worth pointing out low Magnesium doesn't usually show up on a blood (serum) test as the cells in your body will buffer your blood Magnesium (unless you are deathly deficient). The only way to really know is a oral magnesium tolerance test where the patient is given (usually IV magnesium) until they start expressing normal amounts of it in their urine.

Rather than try to find someone who is willing and able to give the test, I would recommend just taking magnesium. Make sure you take a decent kind magnesium oxide is worthless, magnesium citrate is OK, ideally you should take a chelated magnesium.

The chelates are more bioavaialbe and not laxative. The type of chelate influences where it ends up in greater concentrations in the body.

I take Magnesium Taurate for my cardio tissue once a day [1], and Magnesium Glycinate once a day to target my skeletal muscle [2].

Just want to point out, that the ZMA supplement is very overpriced. If i understand correctly, it's 3 tablets each day, so it lasts 60 days for ~$23.

Here after a bit of searching on amazon i found:

Magnesium - $7 - 180 days

Zinc - $10 - 250 days

The B-6 should be also in the multivitamin, but if not, then:

B-Complex - $10 - 150 days - and it's even more B-vitamins and I would recommend taking B-Complex supplement.

So there you have it, for $27 you have supplements for at least 150 days VS 60 days on $23. Mind you I am not even from USA, so i guess you can find even better deals.

u/Greenbeanhead · 4 pointsr/Autism_Parenting

My son had trouble sleeping at that age. He went to sleep fine, but would wake between 2am-4am and wouldn’t go back to sleep. The thing that worked the best was outside time for 3+ hours with lots of running. I’d take him on a walk and we’d stop at the park and I’d chase him around. Then we got a trampoline and that helped a lot. Mental fatigue works too. Trips to the store, library or mall would seem to stimulate him and tire him out (but not in a meltdown way).

Lately he spends his afternoons with the wand sprinkler watering the trampoline and him jumping for hours.

Around the same time I read autistic people tend to have magnesium deficiency. I had him checked, but the pediatrician checked blood levels and the article(medical journal) mentioned levels needed checked from stool/urine. So I bought these supplements and everyone noticed a difference. More eye contact, better focus and less escaping. It helped with sleeping for a week or so, and then he would repeat. Looking back, I’d say it was a growth spurt combined with allergies/colds from pre-k and not enough physical or mental stimulation.

Now at 5.5yo, if he wakes and sees it’s still dark outside he will get back in bed. It’s glorious.

Those symptoms sound like a lack of electrolytes and/or dehydration. Try drinking more water and supplementing electrolytes. If it is electrolytes, after supplementing, the dizziness/headache feeling should go away quickly, and in a while, you should get your energy back, maybe next day.

For starters, I would just start with sodium specifically, just by drink a glass or two of water with a teaspoon of table salt in it.

Better would be getting salt with potassium in it, though, like this Lo Salt https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004TEVING - they sell these or similar ones in most supermarkets.

For magnesium, you can get pills. But don't buy chelated magnesium, I heard it gives you diarrhea, I use magnesium malate - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0013RGUK8 - It says it is 10 calories a pill though and recommends 3 pills a day - I usually only took 1 or 2 depending on how I felt.

Never really supplemented calcium, and most of the times don't take magnesium either. Go by the feeling, start with sodium/potassium salt first and see how you feel.

I haven't done a fast longer than 4 days though.

u/williger · 3 pointsr/fasting

There are different types of magnesium, and citrate may cause a laxative effect. Pure powder supplements don't have calories or additional MCTs or carbs. Better options vs. Citrate are malate (energy-boosting) and glycinate (helps relax muscles and with sleep). I've been using the NOW Brand Magnesium Bisglycinate at night to help sleep and it's incredibly inexpensive (~$5 on Amazon). Cheers! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NIJ03C0/

I also bought more of the magnesium supplement I've been on for a couple of months. I take Mg Aspartate because the guy at the health food store said that would have the least effect on my bowels. I take one pill in the morning and 1 before bed.

Sodium. Potassium. Magnesium. In that order.

Want to make it easy? Buy bullion paste or cubes. Drink hot broth twice a day with 1/8-1/4 tsp of potassium salt in in. That's what I do. Have some next to me right now as a matter of fact.

This is what I use specifically:
Boullion:

Potassium:

Magnesium:

[Although I recently switched to four of these a day:] (http://www.amazon.com/Cardiovascular-Research-Magnesium-Taurate-Capsules/dp/B00014D5TS/ref=sr_1_2?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1450453968&sr=8-2&keywords=magnesium+taurate)

I've used arnica for bruises but not much success on muscle pain. However Magnesium salt spray is fantastic. I get really bad hip/butt pain so I just strip and have my hubby spray me down. Let it dry, and within a few minutes it starts working. I haven't had any skin irritation. Midwife recommended this since I can't take Epsom salt baths as I have no tub (another excellent back pain treatment).

That sounds terrifying! You should think about getting some of this. I have the mixed berry and drink it once a day. I'm prone to my legs cramping even when I'm not pregnant and so far I haven't had an issue. Sorry for the poor formatting I'm on my phone.

Try some Gaba calm. Two of these put me to sleep, no hangover:

u/R_MnTnA · 2 pointsr/microdosing

Are you taking the prescription too? Try lowering your dose and it does take time for some people to see real change. For example for my depression it took about a month with doing the 1 day on 2 days off regimen. I did feel a little more anxiety too. I found magnesium works good for that and it’s good for your brain too and so it might be good for ADD too. Try again in 2 days then maybe try every other day once you find your sweet spot with the dose. This the magnesium I use. - Magnesium Threonate (Magtein) + Taurate & Glycinate For Improved Memory, Brain Function, Sleep, and Heart Health - 90 Vegetarian Capsules | Best L Threonate Supplement by True Recovery https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0115QPARA/

What about asparate? I take this one specifically:

Get the powder form of magnesium supplements, e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Pure-Essence-Raspberry-Lemonade-Magnesium/dp/B0011865NQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381100125&sr=8-1&keywords=ionic+fizz+magnesium
I have this exact problem with leg cramps, and no, pills don't work. But the powder version will get rid of cramps within 20 min.

u/evangelisti · 2 pointsr/Anxiety

I would recommend meditation and/or tea for starters, that helps me when I'm feeling anxious. Also sometimes when my anxiety gets out of control I pop one of these http://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-GABA-Orange-Tablets/dp/B000GFSV5A (you can find them at Whole Foods, yes it's scientifically legit, it's not just placebo). If those don't work, go see a therapist and/or get an SSRI prescription. You may be hesitant to go down that route, but do it if you need to. Anxiety sucks and no one deserves to feel it all the time.

u/Scrump507 · 2 pointsr/keto

The salt and the nu salt is a no brainer, like most I just add it to my foods. The magnesium, however, is a bit harder. The more I read up on it the more I realize there are multiple forms it came in. My first bottle (still using it, I'm frugal... what can I say?) is NatureMade Magnesium 250mg. In the small print on the back it says its magnesium oxide. When I read up on that, it turns out the magnesium oxide is one of the most abundant you can buy because its so cheap. However, (and I'm paraphrasing and therefore any mistakes are mine and mine alone) it turns out that our bodies have a hard time breaking this type down and we only really get about 40mg(?) of the 250mg. However, another variation (and there are a few good variations) is Magnesium Aspartate (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BCYRRE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=9AZARRFU11IA&coliid=I38KDKBN14ACNX) from Amazon. Easier for your body to break down.

If you want more more information to make your own decision, here is one link that might help: http://www.clinicians.co.nz/which-magnesium-is-the-best/

Good luck on your journey... and stay strong!

EDIT: I also want to say that when taking magnesium, go slow. Figure out what dose is best for your body. If I said this once, I've said this a gazillion times... everybody is different, so how much magnesium added to their diet will be different. And jumping in too fast with a lot of magnesium can possibly lead to some side effects... Nothing dire, but butt pee is something some have complained about. So start smaller and keep track of how your body reacts. And go from there.

vitaminne shoppe also carries it if you have one locally.

True calm has alot more mg and valerian which i am not a fan of (also can be addictive). The main reason I like Gaba calm is it is a lozenge vs a pill so acts quickly with minimal does. In fact i usually take half a lozenge when needed unless trying to sleep.

Yeah. The cheapest form of magnesium, magnesium oxide, works just fine for my kratom konstipation.

I feel for you man. I keep up with these tree subs & r/IBS. I used to not get out much. Medical cannabis has been a huge blessing but it’s still not a “cure”, if that any makes sense.

Personally, I’ve been eating a lot of smoothies and alternative food ideas like soylent, and other replacements. I have IBS & slow transit constipation, so finding stuff that’s easy to digest & keeping my stool soft/moving is vital in my treatment.

If you want some over the counter stuff to try, I’ve been having success with magnesium glycinate (as opposed to regular magnesium, which absorbs much quicker) and these gimmicky-looking gluten pills.

Good luck, I hope it gets better for you. Keep your head up, my frient.

u/ambitious_flosser · 1 pointr/Anxiety

I was diagnosed with PVCs years ago. The many docs I've seen, and tested by, have all said it's benign. Still doesn't freak me the fuck out. When I'm sleep deprived, too much caffeine or sugar, or just stressed about something else, they're much worse. If I get one, it's not so bad, but if they're in small bunches, or happen over a long period of the day, they usually give me more worry.

One thing that did seem to help a bit was magnesium. Now there's certain types that seem to be relatively useless, like magnesium oxide, but read that [magnesium taurate] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00014D5TS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) works better for PVCs. The link is the one I purchased on Amazon, and seems to help. Full disclosure, I in no way am affiliated with the manufacturer, just passing along what's worked for me.

Late response but muscle cramps are usually from a Magnesium deficiency. I struggled with this as well until I figured out the correct amount I needed to take daily, it's different for everyone due to differences in weight, diet, age, water consumption, etc., you may just need more than you're currently taking. I take 1800mg of Magnesium Citrate per day, 600mg in the morning and 1200mg right before going to bed at night. I fill my own capsules with this bulk powder to save money but I have also used this brand of Magnesium Citrate capsules. I'm a huge guy (474 pounds) and drink 1 to 2 gallons of water a day so keep that in mind when figuring out how much you need. Magnesium does other good things for you too like improving sleep and regularity. You can also kill a muscle cramp with 500mg of Magnesium Citrate and large glass of water in about 20 minutes, works like a charm.

u/legsanddairyqueen · 1 pointr/PMDD

Hey, I hope you're doing ok! Honestly, breakups with the PMDD and anxious attachment have been a nightmare, so it's super important that you're good to yourself! It's really hard to reprogram to not seek anything from avoidant people, it's so triggering and just becomes a cycle. It sounds like you went through that a lot in that relationship, and it's probably not the dynamic you want. And both people have to be onboard to really fix a relationship. So tough! I empathize. If you can, focus totally on yourself and let the relationship go, at least for awhile. That's advice I wish I had taken. I feel like when we have PMDD we end up taking the blame for relationship failures but I also feel like, how hard is it for partners of people with PMDD to have some compassion? I know it's not easy to live with on either side, but I feel like avoidant people or toxic relationship situations use PMDD against us and don't acknowledge our suffering. Plenty of people on here have understanding partners, so it gives me hope.

As for the Xanax and using it for sleep or getting rebound anxiety, I think a sleep routine could be helpful. Get yourself some nice comfy pajamas, a nice facewash and maybe some melantonin (I'm partial to the gummies) and/or magnesium (something like this one) and get into a book or podcast, something that isn't screen-based. Give yourself like an hour for a pre-bed routine and put on your pajamas and power down, even do one of those youtube yoga bedtime routines (I like the videos by Adrienne). That was one of the most helpful things my therapist suggested I do. I also keep Tylenol PM or a sleep aid like Midnite on hand in case I feel like too wound up, which usually happens for me around PMDD time. Mine lasts about 10 days too.

I try to save the Xanax for times when I'm feeling super aggro and either can't calm down or I feel like I'm going to snap at people at work. I use weed for when I'm feeling that way at home. Basically, I control my environment as much as possible and work on keeping myself happy and developing interests or social connections that make me feel better rather than worse. It's a learning experience to see what helps and what hurts, and how those two things get confused sometimes. And when I can't control the PMDD or what's going on, I take Xanax. But once you figure out things in your life that might be making the PMDD worse or trigger the anxious attachment, I think it will get a little easier.

The only trouble with these is the doses are really small - sodium is 200/5000mg (amount vs FAQ daily recommendation), magnesium's 56/300mg, potassium's 70/1000mg; even if you take the recommended maximum of 4 tablets/day, that's still not much of a dent.

This is what I use (all Amazon links for convenience):

u/intheaterssoon · 1 pointr/Supplements

I have been taking both of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0797SJ88Y

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G2NLKR3

There is no huge rhyme or reason for those two. I think I saw Rhonda Patrick recommend one and I forget exactly why I chose the other. I figured I'd mix it up and take two different types.

I take two capsules of each for a total of 510mg per day. From what I've read around 500mg is a pretty standard therapeutic dose.

u/pacespace · 1 pointr/xxketo

I was gonna mention that magnesium citrate is better absorbed but you already figured that out :)

You should try natural calm for your magnesium supplement. Not getting enough magnesium is most likely the reason for headaches, leg cramps, etc. Plus it helps you sleep better!

u/cutdogg03 · 1 pointr/Supplements

Answer me this then: if every labeling of magnesium xyz is elemental magnesium, according to you and the government, then why are the following supplements SPECIFICALLY labeled elemental magnesium (instead of just saying magnesium xyz):

https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Magnesium-Glycinate/dp/B000BD0RT0/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1522246054&sr=8-4&keywords=elemental+magnesium

Think about it: if you have one supplement that says 100 mg magnesium xyz, and another that says 100 mg elemental magnesium (from 2000 mg magnesium xyz), and both pills are roughly the same size, does that add up? It doesn't to me. And here's another thing: I didn't start having the vivid dreams and waking up refreshed until I started taking the magnesium laxative at 1 fl oz. 1 fl oz is 1,745 mg of magnesium cirate, with 282 of it being elemental magnesium. When I was taking it in tablet form, I was taking 400 mg of magnesium citrate, but I never experienced any differences in my dreams or felt more refreshed waking up.

u/felix-felicis45 · 1 pointr/ibs

FYI I have just learned that if you are only interested in my museum for its laxative effect you are better off with a less bioavailable magnesium.

However many many people are deficient in magnesium, especially the chronically ill, because our body's dump magnesium when under stress.

Thanks, I'm walking between 3 and 12 miles each day. The most difficult part was definitely managing bodily function--the first week or two nothing was guaranteed. Best advice I can give: trust no fart.

I also re-read the audio book of Mark Divine's "Way of the SEAL" -- it gives a bunch of exercises to build mental toughness and resilience. I've had little to no hunger/cravings and have cooked several highly aromatic meals for others: homemade pizza, seafood marinara, shrimp and dirty rice, etc.

Overall this has been an exceedingly positive experience my BP has dropped from 140/96 @ 78 bpm to 121/81 @ 74 bmp. I've gone from sleeping 4-5 hours per night with snoring interrupted breathing/semi-apnea (no mask or anything) to 8-10 hours sleeping like a baby. I'm waking up at 5 am before my alarm.

I can't give you the specifics on the nutrients/micronutrients. Here's my complete shopping list--I'm taking electrolyte pills and not using drops--these were recommended in another thread. It's good to keep those on hand, in case you feel any cramps or light-headedness.

Drink them with a full glass of water (magnesium pulls fluid into the digestive tract). Doctor told me it was fine to use indefinitely.

Typically in the beginning/middle of the day. I eat my OMAD at night, and take my multivitamin with it and I like to space out the magnesium and the multi.

I purchased someSource Naturals magnesium malate 425mg per serving after hearing good reviews. However, I found after taking them before bed I would wake up feeling a bit washed out, almost like a hangover.

I checked the label and a serving provides 425mg of magnesium and 5mg of sodium. Now 5mg of sodium is above the recommended daily allowance and that is not factoring in any intake from food.

Is this normal for a magnesium supplement?
