If you want to up your Kuru Toga game, get one of the metal ones on Amazon. They perform the same as the plastic ones, but look and feel much better. I've had the gunmetal grey Kuru Toga for years now, but it's fallen aside to Pigma Micron pens (mmmm felt tip).

In case if you were wondering, it's a Mitsubishi Hi-Uni in HB.

u/veggiedefender · 10 pointsr/APStudents

How about these babies?

  • Lead is thick as heck
  • Eraser is huge
u/[deleted] · 9 pointsr/EngineeringStudents

This pen and I would suggest buying a stand-alone eraser. You can just buy extra lead too. I've used one of these, just one, for a few years now.

I don't think there's any reason to buy a more expensive pencil or pen while you're in college. Spend money somewhere else.

I am assuming you mean .7 mm lead size.

The Uni Kuru Toga starter set is a good option with extra lead and erasers along with the Kuru Toga pencil that has a rotating lead mechanism to keep the lead thickness consistent.

If you want a large eraser, the Pentel Twist Erase has the largest common mechanical pencil eraser.

If you hate when your lead breaks get the Zebra Delguard. This pencil has a unique mechanism that protects your lead and makes sure it doesn't break when writing.

Awesome post, but you're missing my favorite! A flawless writing utensil, in my opinion.

u/asciiaardvark · 7 pointsr/fountainpens

Sorry to hear that :(

Wing Sung 698 is pretty similar to TWSBI Eco, somehow even but cheaper. The cap is way heavier and does not post, not sure if that matters to you.

For pencil: I just got the Zebra DelGuard, which the Pen Addict guys liked. I have a problem with breaking .5mm so hopefully this'll help me.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Here is the link the amazon page of the 0.9 variety.

u/jivemasta · 6 pointsr/Documentaries

Zebra Delguards are where it's at. You can't snap the lead while writing too hard or at a weird angle.

Though that one you mention looks like a good buy it for life sort of thing.

u/omccloud · 5 pointsr/pencils

I would consider the pentel twist erase iii since it has a grip, large eraser and comes in 0.9 mm. It is also super affordable and frankly, nearly all pentel pencils have solid mechanisms. Weakest point of the pencil is the clip, but it is fine with normal use. http://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Twist-Erase-Automatic-Assorted-QE519BP2-K6/dp/B0047CP6SI

I will say though that if you are having trouble with lead breakage you should try one of pentel's or pilot's higher quality leads - something like this - http://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Stein-Mechanical-Pencil-C279-2B/dp/B004NNM5LC?th=1&psc=1

I linked a slightly harder lead than the standard HB lead (a.k.a. #2) which will also give you some strength.

u/allthecats · 5 pointsr/2XLite

Some Palomino Blackwing pencils. It seems ridiculous to spend that much on pencils, but there's just nothing like them.

u/Sammichface · 5 pointsr/thewalkingdead

I was just looking at amazon after I commented and the prices have changed a little since I purchased my sets. One set went up in price and one set went down.

I paid about $26 including shipping for a set of 60 pencils and a sharpener. It was the Scholar set. They are good quality and includes a nice variety of colors and shades. Right now that same set has gone up to $29.99 and the sharpener is still under $2 . I think the Scholar set was about $20 when I bought it.

I noticed there is a set of 48 Premiers for like $35 right now so you could always go that route. I had a set of premiers in HS and they are a better pencil than the Scholars, but I still think less money for more colors is worth it.

I paid about $18 including shipping for a set of 36 Verithin pencils which are great for fine details. They have a harder "lead" or whatever you want to call it. I know it's not actually lead so I hope you get what I mean. They are great for hard lines and accents. I wouldn't use these for shading or gradation. I love them. I use them for all kinds of different techniques that the softer pencils don't work as well for. Right now a set of 24 is like $12 before shipping so jump on it.

Edited to add links and change some stuff that I got wrong.

Edit to OP: Prismacolor is a great option for what you're looking to do because they work well on different types of surfaces. I'm assuming your comic collection has glossy pages, right? Regular, less expensive pencils won't work as well and you might not be able to fill in and shade everything without leaving lines and white space. I hope you show us some of the pages when you get started.

u/PeteOK · 4 pointsr/math

I'm a sucker for mechanical pencils with a narrow lead, so I use the 0.3mm Alvin Draft-Matic Mechanical Pencil. It feels like I'm constantly writing with freshly sharpened pencil.

u/BrotherSeamus · 4 pointsr/AskEngineers

Graphgear 0.9mm - I prefer the thicker, tougher lead

Pilot Precise V5 - Cap prevents leakage

Both are decent quality but still cheap enough that I don't worry about losing/breaking a few.

I used Touchnew markers.
Numbers; 64,76,182,CG8,83,143,84,132,145,75, white deleter for the eyes, I overlapped # 76 on 182. # 64 is used to shade for the blue. # 145 is for the shade for the white on the dress. CG8 is for the dress and shoes. #84 is the ribbon. # 83 is for the shade for the dress. For the black I used whatever but make the lines thick haha rem is thick lulz. I used a color pencil for the blush. For the skin I used #132. TBH I would go fairer. Like #26 or #131. I used a micron pen for some of the black I have a black Copic marker so I used that to fill in some stuff I would not use the Copic cuz the brush is hard to control for me now. Rotring 800 or a Pentel Graphgear 1000 seem to be really rugged in my experience. The rOtring will be less likely to malfunction though. Rotrings are impressively well built. Full metal construction with a knurled grip section and retractable lead sleeve. Go ahead and throw this pencil at a wall. It will survive. These are considered to be pencils you can pass onto your grandkids because they just last that long.

I guess the reason is that pencils are considered "tools" much more than status symbols, like pens are. Many department stores will carry pens from Mont Blanc, Sheaffer or Waterman, but few will sell the pencils unless it's in a set. Traditional pen maker brands unfortuntaley have not made great pencils, they make them to match their pens.

For me almost every mechanical pencil from Pentel represents excellent quality. Check the graphgear 500 or the 1000. They also make some that have a big retractable eraser at the top, a very useful adition. I like this because of the wide rubber grip, but there are several options. The Pentel Kerry is almost in a category of its own.

The zebra frisha is comfortable, reliable and has three mechanisms to advance the lead: the traditionl pusher at the top, the "shaker" (you shake it up and down and a weight inside advances the lead), and automatic, where the lead is advanced when you lift it from the paper.

I am becoming a big fan of these 1.3mm ones from Paper Mate. A version in aluminium would be really nice.

[Pilot S20] (https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Mechanical-Pencil-0-5mm-DR5/dp/B001AX7TUU/ref=sr_1_2?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1520225383&sr=1-2&keywords=pilot+s20&dpID=41ud31tnK4L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch): Wooden barrel mechanical pencil. Very high quality pencil and smooth, silky writing experience -- so it's good for long periods of writing (ie. taking notes, math). Nice weighting -- naturally positions itself toward the paper in your hand.

[Faber Castell TK Fine Vario] (https://www.amazon.com/Faber-Castell-Mechanical-Pencil-135500/dp/B000WEAW2K/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1520225493&sr=1-1&keywords=faber+castell+tk+fine+vario&dpID=41E%252BerIBzDL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch): High quality pencil w/ a mode for soft writing (for taking notes/general writing) as well as a mode for hard writing (drafting, etc.). Has a smooth, flared metal grip as well as an extendable eraser. Absorbs pressure to avoid lead breakage.

[Rotring Rapid Pro] (https://www.amazon.com/rOtring-1904257-Rapid-Mechanical-Pencil/dp/B0055ZUEZQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1520225819&sr=1-1&keywords=rotring+rapid+pro): Another very high quality pencil. Although this pencil is generally labeled by people as a drafting pencil, it is definitely great for everyday carry. Nicely cut knurled grip -- even if you're sweating, for example, don't really have to keep repositioning hand. Retractable tip, so pocket safe. Weighting is nice as well, heavier than the S20 though. Very durable. Absorbs pressure to avoid lead breakage.

[Caran D'Ache 844] (https://www.amazon.com/Caran-Dache-Infinite-Mechanical-Pencil/dp/B000WFZ7SS/ref=sr_1_3?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1520226391&sr=1-3&keywords=caran+dache+844&dpID=31BgbaTFd3L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch): This pencil has a clean, simple look to it, and writes beautifully. It is also extremely sturdy and the barrel is aluminum, so it has a nice weight to it as well. Not very fatiguing when writing -- good for long periods.

Note: As someone who is currently enrolled in engineering courses, I believe you can't really go wrong when deciding between these. I own each of them and recommend them equally.

It's pretty cheap, the lead lasts for a long time and you can easily switch out the type/hardness of lead. They're available at hobby lobby too.

You've basically nailed it all down, all you need is some recommendations on notebooks. From what you've said, I would buy the following list of items:
B5 Lined MUJI Notebooks
These are absolutely fantastic. They are lightweight, the paper is smooth, and there is absolutely no bleedthrough even with wet fountain pens.
Pilot Hi-Tec C Gel Pen
It is such a pleasure to write with, that I wasn't sure if I'd go for this one or the Pilot G-Tec.
MUJI 0.5 ink pens
If you want to add some colour, I like these pens. They're not too wet, nor too dry. The Japanese factor will please her.
Blackwing pencils
I stopped using pencils after highschool, and then I bought one of these and let me tell you one thing, this pencil right here will make you want to trade all your pens for pencils.

A few weeks ago the Rotring Rapid Pro, 600 and 800 were going for under $30 on Amazon. You could try those. They're built so well I feel like I could hurt someone by just knocking them on the head with one.

I like these Pentel mechanical pencils perferably in .9mm. All metal, but not overly beefy, and not too expensive.

As for the Sharpie, does it have to be Sharpie brand or just a permanent marker?

u/MidnightCreative · 2 pointsr/DnD

When I started playing I bought a pack of 20 sets of dice.

After 2 years I now bring 2 sets to the table, with a few extra d6. That's a personal decision, because I find I need extra d6 more than anything else; You daughter night need multiple of other dice depending what character she plays. But overall, having 2 of every dice is plenty I think.

Having a box to keep and roll them in is an excellent idea. Dice boxes are a really useful addition to your DND setup. I made my own, but there are plenty of companies out there who make nice boxes too. Wyrmwood are what I would aspire to make my boxes like... Need a bit more practice and some different tools though lol.

Some other gift ideas though, and this is all stuff I use or have:

D&D books - Player's Handbook, Xanathars Guide, Dungeon Masters Guide, Sword Coast Adventurers Guide to name a few. Depends whether she's more of a player or wants to run sessions which ones you should get.

Spell or item cards - Something like this could be useful. If you know what class her character is you could get a specific set, or a general pack. I use them with a playing card folder to keep them all together.

Pins and stickers - there's loads of people who make enamel pins and stuff for D&D, great for customising a bag or something.

3D miniatures - Hero Forge let's you make your character and you can either download the file to print yourself, or get them to print it for you. Might need to get some paints to go along with this one.

Custom Character Sheets - Alright, so I actually make these, so it's a bit if a self plug, but I think they're still a great gift. A5 Character Sheet Booklet. It's your standard D&D character sheet in an A5 booklet format with a few extra bits added. Keeps everything nice and tidy, and protects the sheet from damage without having to faff about with a bigger A4 folder.

Mechanical Pencils - not much of a gift I guess, but hot damn, it is frustrating to have to sharpen your pencil at the table. Just get a mechanical one. I use one of these for my graphic design work and bought a second one to keep with my D&D stuff, but any mechanical pencil will do.

u/RedMoth11 · 2 pointsr/pencils

i think the rotring 500, it lacks the flamboyant features it's just a pencil, the pentel gg 1000 is good, and uni shift pipe lock since the lead sleeve is retractable.
i wouldn't recommend the 500 if you keep in your pocket because of the lead sleeve doesn't retract and that would mean it can get bent.
if you can get a Rotring rapid pro for 24$ that would probably be better for pocket use.

u/Ig00 · 2 pointsr/mechanicalpencils

I just had a similar discussion with a client!

Depending on what you wanna spend There are a number of choices.

For a sketch artist I'd steer clear of brands like Cross(Luxury writing utensils. Great products just not everyday art friendly)

I'd suggest a 2mm lead holder, some lead refills(4b, 2b, hb, 2h, 4h), a lead pointer, and a kneadable eraser or two.

Rotring makes some great products and even the more utilitarian Staedtler is a bifl and a great gift for an aspiring artist.

Edit: Also as a suggestion from an artist-Never anything in white if you can help it and a box of those foil pack Fingerbowl/wet wipes are quite a boon if they're a artist on the go. ;)

  • It's metal.
  • You can split open a regular pencil to extract the lead and use it for refill for this thing (in case you weren't able to purchase refills from art supplies.)
  • You can use it to write on rough things like walls because it's thick enough. If you're an artist, you sharpen it to a chisel point with a blade.
u/euThohl3 · 2 pointsr/AskEngineers

Er, that's not a draftmatic, it's a draft-tec. This is the draft-matic, though it's not retractable:
http://www.amazon.com/Alvin-Draft-Matic-Mechanical-Pencil-ANDM03/dp/B001DKGYLK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_op_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=062PKPPVDKMMC0CCP4S0

I like the 0.9mm Draftmatics myself, with soft 2B lead. It's a bit like a big erasable black crayon, but if I need fine lines, there's always autocad and the laser printer.

u/Z4KJ0N3S · 2 pointsr/mechanicalpencils

I've had my metal-body Kuru Toga for very nearly three years now, and I love it. This Amazon link comes with some eraser refills and a pack of leads made just for the pencil.

There's a review compilation on the front page that gives it awful scores because the lead rotation mechanism "doesn't work", but I think it should've been obvious to the reviewer that he got a bad apple or something. You can easily verify it by holding the pencil in your hand and looking into the little window on the grip while rapidly pressing the tip a dozen times. I can definitely say the lead rotation works, and is useful. I'll definitely miss it when I move to an rOtring 800.

u/SkiBacon · 2 pointsr/mechanicalpencils

For that, you could get a few P207s. Really nice pencils and also available in .3mm, .5mm, and .9mm with the P203, P205, and P209 respectively. The p203 and 9 might be slightly more expensive. They are some really solid pencils and mine have lasted quite a while.

True.

But you know how habits are. Front pockets are for cellphone, wallet and keys and I got used to reaching for the notebook in the back. I also carry a leatherman in my other back pocket and by now I feel incomplete if its not there. I've tried changing that one to my front lighter pocket but it feels unnatural. I'm not sure why I'm telling you all this.

Anyway, at some point I got some of these really thick mechanical pencils and they take the abuse quite well. So I thought it would just be a matter of reinforcing. Oh, the things we do to keep our little habits intact.

I've been using the pencil every day for about a week and I don't feel that "mushiness" at all. The entire mechanism holding the lead retracts by about 1-2 millimetres when first touching the paper, but that actually makes the writing experience more pleasant for me. It's definitely the best mechanical pencil I've used.

The only problem I've noticed is that the entire mechanism moves sideways by about 1 mm when applying a fair bit of pressure on either side of the pencil (sometimes while writing).

Before using the Kuru Toga, I was using a Mitsubishi Uni HB pencil similar to these and the lead was amazingly smooth.

I think there are only two versions of the Staedtler Noris Digital - one for Chromebook and one for everything else including reMarkable. I bought this one from Amazon and it works fine. Staedtler's compatibility list is here. In terms of writing with it then it feels a lot softer than the standard marker. If you consider the marker as being like a 2H pencil then the Staedtler feels like a 2B. Even though it feels a lot different to use, there's very little difference in the output. The ballpoint pen, marker pen, fineliner, sharp pencil and brush are virtually indistinguishable. The only real difference seems to be with the tilt pencil which comes out darker with the Staedtler.

Check out the Uni Kuru Toga Roulette. Amazon has them on sale for like $10 with replacement lead and erasers (usually the pencil is like $15, lead+ erasers maybe $7).

I bought one a few weeks ago and I will never go back to cheap pencils. In fact, I never used cheap pencils because I hated them. I love this pencil.

What I used was a lead holder, which is different than a mechanical pencil. It has a much thicker, longer lead and you use a lead pointer, or possibly sandpaper, to sharpen it. Also, it doesn't automatically advance the lead. It has a release, but if you point it down, the lead will fall out.

Have a look at the Twist Erase III in 0.9mm (it also comes in 0.5 and 0.7). The grip is quite comfortable and it has the best mechanical pencil eraser ever.

Pentel P207 or P209, with a rubber thingy where I grasp it to make it more comfortable.

Zebra has very nice pens, but their pencils are phenominal.

Thanks for the compliment and question! I teach, so I strive to have neat handwriting for whiteboard work. :)

I love the Staedler triplus fineliners so far! They didn't arrive until a couple of days after my notebook, though, and I was eager to get started. :) Many of the earlier pages were done using one or more of the following:

Update: After looking at how the Rotring product line has changed since I bought my multipen, I think the Rotring Rapid Pro is a better approximation of what I've been using for so many years.

u/tehstone · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

These are my favorite, although I use 0.7mm lead. I've been using them since 2001, I managed to break one once, but it's not likely to happen unless you're trying. The only reason I've ever bought more than the first pair was my own carelessness, I lose pencils like nobody's business.

They are sturdy and nobody else has them so its easy to spot who steals your pencils

Edit: Sorry I dont know how to insert a fancy link

Whilst looking on amazon, I saw this rapid pro for $16, but it's this cheap due to how long it's going to take to arrive to places like the U.S.A and etc.

Nope, that is just the regular Pentel Orenz. This is the one you're looking for.

I love using pencils. I don't always do it, but I always keep one clipped to my notebook or in my backpack. My preference is these, but I'm not sure where a non-government employee could get them at a reasonable price. These are my favorite alternative, but they don't have a clip and the eraser isn't amazing.

u/Zilog8 · 1 pointr/funny

I'm actually kinda curious as to the pencil...

edit:
Think I found it.

Here's a high-resolution image for anyone curious as to how it works.

Might this be the pencil his was referring to? They are not pure graphite but they all black and really high quality pencils.

There are also these pure graphite pencils but they seem to be more of an office supply than a gift.

My favorite mech pencil of all time.

Doesn't have cushioned lead, but the .9 will never break. Rotate the pencil to maintain a sharp point.
