My wife and I last month or so just started watching Parks and Rec on Netflix. Being a watch enthusiast I was always curious which watch Ron Swanson wore on the show so I looked it up as I think it is sharp looking. Turns out, as many already know, it is a discontinued Citizen 2100 Calibre

I was not in a hurry to get it but thought if I ever came across one I'd perhaps pick one up. Friday one popped up on Facebook Marketplace, which I have never used and not sure why I even looked, and I decided to grab it for what I thought was a good price after seeing what they go for on e-bay (it is getting harder to find this version). When I told my wife I was running to meet the guy after work she rolled her eyes and asked why I needed yet another watch. I told her it was a good deal and that I was going to flip it (that excuse is getting thin though as I have yet do so with a watch). However after seeing it she is now suggesting I keep it because she really likes the dial. Even though it looks white it actually has a horizontal striped pattern, almost sunburst like, that only shows up in certain light.

The watch definitely showed signs of steady wear after 2 years, but cleaned up rather nice. The mineral crystal needs some attention as there are a fair number of micro scratches that should buff right out. I'm still on the fence about keeping it, but for now will give it a week or two and see if I still feel its worth hanging on to. Eco drive, flyback chrono and an alarm feature make it a pretty solid piece for well under $200.

I would just grab a Frog Togg in the mean time. Cheap, light and will do the trick in the interim.

u/conchata · 9 pointsr/Watches

You'll find that it's quite common.

And those six are mostly off the top of my head. So many brands have their own version.

u/GREAT_SALAD · 9 pointsr/Watchexchange

Some prices seem a little high, albeit most of them are out of stock everywhere and I imagine they won't be in stock any time soon. Except for the G-Shock, you can pick one up on amazon for a bit less than $70

Get a medium or high impact sport bra like this UnderArmour bra. The seams are not raised and hide under a t-shirt or two. I can flatten my boobs out for the gym with two of those. Also see Jenna Marbles for an example.

If you think you can be comfortable on a CCF pad like the z-lite then go for it. It'll be lighter, cheaper, and much more durable than an inflatable. I personally don't enjoy them as much, so I opted for the neoair. It's plenty durable if you pay attention to sharp things (rocks generally won't puncture it), but it does cost more. If you can test any of them out I highly recommend that because if a CCF pad works for you then you're golden; cheap, light, durable. For me I was willing to spend more to get a good night sleep on the trail, and I'm fine with watching where I drop it to protect it more.

My go to recommendation for rain wear is a Frogg Togg jacket. Amazon UK (I'm assuming you are in UK, sorry if not) carries them for cheap, and they do a solid job of keeping you dry. Some folks complain about durability, and they aren't designed for hard abuse like bushwhacking, but my pair is 2 years old and still going strong.

The Casio RFT-100 was developed for the 2006 World Cup, and is a solid referee watch. Pre-programmed halves, tilt-night glow, vibration-only operation (selectable), made for soccer. The only downside is that over time, the spring bar that holds the band to the watch can pull through the plastic. I've broken one with a ball to the wrist, and the band pulled the spring bar loose. Because it's plastic, it scores the watch, and the spring bar will pull easily from then on, and can't be repaired.

I've been using a 1st-generation Spintso referee timer and it's quite good as well. While there are no pre-programmed times, it's built for one-touch operation. Once the times for the halves are programmed, all other operations are one-touch. For example, once you set the halves for 45-minutes, and, for example, select 10 minutes for the halftime break, you just use one button to start/stop for anything after that.

The workflow for the Spintso is like this:

  • Set duration of halves
  • Set duration of halftime break
  • Long-press start/stop button to start match. Begins counting down from 45mins to zero on one timer, and match counter begins counting up from zero.
  • Long-press for any stoppage (injury, time-wasting, etc.) Watch automatically begins counting stoppage time. The stoppage time indicator begins climbing up from zero. Watch vibrates every five seconds when stoppage time is enabled to remind you that match time is stopped.
  • Long-press start/stop button again to end stoppage time and resume match. Stoppage timer stops, and match timers resume (1st period timer decrements toward zero, match timer increments from zero upward)
  • When the half expires, the watch vibrates. The stoppage counter shows you how much time to add. The match time automatically adds the stoppage time, and vibrates to let you know that the half, plus stoppage has expired, and begins the halftime period timer.
  • When the half-time timer expires, the watch vibrates to remind you to start the second half. It waits for you to start the second half - you don't have to start right when the halftime timer expires. Just long-press the start/stop button to begin the second half.
  • Just as in the 1st half, long-press the start/stop button anytime you need to add stoppage time (injury, time wasting, etc), and the stoppage time increments, the match half timer stops, and the full match timer keeps incrementing. The watch will vibrate every few seconds to remind you that you are in stoppage time mode. Long-press the start/stop button to resume match.
  • When the halftime timer decrements to zero, the stoppage timer begins displays how much time to add. The match timer increments to the half duration plus stoppage, and vibrates when that time expires. End the match.

The cool part is that it's all one-button operation once you've set the halves and halftime duration. Takes some getting used to, but it's very easy once you've done it a few times. It has three modes - the regular watch mode, which displays the day of week, year, month/day, time (with Daylight Savings mode with one press to switch modes) (hours/minutes/seconds). The second mode is game mode, which displays Time Zone (you can select any time zone in the world), hh:mm:sec, month/day at the top, am/pm, which period you're in (1st or 2nd), minutes remaining in half, then the bottom displays total match time (incrementing from zero), stoppage time.

When you enter halftime period, the halftime timer appears, and decrements from whatever duration you've set.

The last mode is stopwatch mode. It just starts/stops a timer from zero.

    Hope that helps!

No one has mentioned snow! Here are the basics of what you'll need.

  • Boots. Something similar to LL Bean Boots would be ideal. It will snow and slush and you want your boots to be warm and waterproof. People will wear normal shoes during winter, but they'll also have cold and wet feet.
  • Gloves. Try to avoid really thin materials. Fleece should be good enough until you realize what you're comfortable with. Old Navy sells cheap fleece ones to get you started.
  • Jacket. You want something with multiple layers with a waterproof exterior. Bonus: has a hood and the ability to tighten around the waist with little bungee knobs (wind up your jacket sucks). North Face is a very popular brand, but can be expensive (>$250). North Face and Columbia also sell jackets that have a removable inner fleece jacket, so you can wear it across multiple seasons.

    Other goodies:

  • Hat - anything goes, from beanies to those big furry ones
  • Scarf / one of these thingies - fantastic for covering your chin and nose on a super windy day
  • 180s
  • Wool socks
  • Long underwear / Under Armour style tight-fitted shirts and pants

And if you ever drive in the snow, two things: accelerate slowly and brake before you turn, not during the turn.

If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.

My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

New poster! I've always been into watches but never owned anything too expensive. My daily driver was THIS, on the days I wear business casual to work. When I need to be a little dressed up, I'd wear THIS. Hamilton is awesome. You can tell how well its made. I popped a nato strap to this bad boy and good to go! Hopefully the first of many!

u/cmraarzky · 4 pointsr/running

Completely personal but beyond a good baselayer nothing else I own is running specific for the winter. Up top I'll usually use a compression shirt and then layer a few shirts on top of that culminating in a hoodie (the front pocket is clutch for carrying extra tissues or storing your hat/gloves). Layers are your friend. Bottom wise I'll do compression shorts and/or tights depending on how cold it is and another pair of shorts over top just for another layer. Other than that I wear my normal socks, a buff if needed, a knit hat, and some light gloves. This setup has carried me through the coldest and windiest parts of the winter last year. I made a quick down and dirty jumping off point for you to look at some decent, affordable gear: Tesla tights, Tesla top, Reflective knit hat, Buff, Headlamp, Lightweight gloves. You may want to look at maybe some windproof layers, wool socks, or heavier gloves depending on what the weather actually looks like near you. I wasn't a fan of the yak trax style grips and ended up just using my trail running shoes a lot in the winter, just be careful.

You didn't mention your budget, but if you're looking to spend $50 like on your 180 watch, you'd be hard pressed to find anything non-digital, I would think.

This Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph may fit your need. It has a quartz-based analog movement, is silent and the chrono function works very well with a smooth sweeping hand. (And if you're curious, yes, it does reset very well). On top of that, it's a pretty nice looking-watch you can wear daily and it's solar charged.

u/kerodean · 3 pointsr/Outlier

How about the merino wool buff? I did a review on it here.

u/Teerlys · 3 pointsr/preppers

For my literally carry on my person at all times kit:

  • This keychain flashlight is one of the things I'll be getting for Christmas this year to replace my old junker. I put a bit of research time into this with the help of /r/flashlights and youtube video reviews. I think it's a solid pick.

  • I carry a Skeletool CX Multitool pretty much everywhere except airplanes. For day to day life it has all of the tools most people will need and weighs way less than a fully packed leatherman. I have uses for this at minimum monthly if not multiple times a week.

  • I also wear a paracord bracelet regularly. Honestly... on that one I've never really had a call to unwind and use it as rope, but I like it well enough and it's nice knowing that it's there if I need it. Given the recent apple keynote address where they announced that their new watch will have full cellular capabilities among the other things it can do I am half considering replacing this with a $400 wrist computer at some point, but that's a hefty investment.

  • Smart phone. A world of information at my fingertips.

  • Then there's the usual stuff like keys, work badge, headphones, wallet.

However, I also bring my backpack with me to and from work everyday, and if we're heading out adventuring for the day I'll chuck it in my trunk just to have it. I'm not sure I'll get everything here, but I'll toss in what I can remember off of the top of my head.

  • Kleenex, Ibuprofen, pepto tablets, band aids, cough drops
  • Pepper Spray and a boot knife
  • Fingerless leather gloves + a seasonal pair of full work gloves. The fingerless ones are the ones I use most often when I'm helping friends or family move heavy things. They have padded palms and protect my hands well. The seasonal work gloves are for in the event I need to engage in more messy hand work and the winter pair has served as backup for my cold weather gloves more than once when someone less prepared didn't have their own.
  • I got a shemagh once on a whim after watching a video on it. Tried it on, decided I looked ridiculous, but kept it as a small thin blanket in my backpack.
  • Come winter I always have my Balaclava (seriously, this one is awesome) for really cold weather and even a half piece for when it's cold enough for a scarf but I don't really need full head gear. I love both of these and refer to them as my full ninja vs my half ninja. My fiancee rolls her eyes.
  • A few kirkland brand 5 hour energy bottles (I don't like coffee)
  • Umbrella, lighter, backup phone charger, and headphones
  • Full size water-resistant flashlight

That stuff usually gets toted around with me just about everywhere, though not always directly on my person. Depending on the season or event I'll add or remove items as needed.
u/Zimek · 3 pointsr/Referees

your choices, basically:
-any old cheap timex with any kind of timer function will suffice, and last for a good long while.
-a nice watch made for reffing, often with vibrate features. Spintso watch or this one is what i use, personally. Spintso is expensive, but I've heard you can often find last year's model for a decent price if you know where to look.
-a smartwatch. Something that can pair to your smartphone, or a fitness-centric model like something from garmin or polar. these typically offer less soccer-specific settings, but allow you to track steps, heartrate, and all sorts of things like that.

u/SoberIrishGuy · 3 pointsr/Watches

You can generally change the band on a watch btw.

One of the cheapest (of the "waterproof breathable" "non-disposable/non"emergency") that is relatively light: Marmot Precip

I swear by leather chaps. I wear em even if it's 100F outside. The hot sun directly on the tops of my legs sucks, but the chaps provide an air-gap insulation layer.

I ride in that temp comfortably with not much problem, provided it's not a really long ride (without heated gear). I had expected to read that you'd bundled way up against the cold and still decided that was enough. Did you really just add chaps to your regular riding gear?

Here's what i wear other than normal "Clothes, jacket, gloves, and chaps"-

Good spandex thermals like Harley's "Ice Breakers" top and bottom. They're not the knit ones like the white long-johns, they're the kind you get at sporting goods stores for snow-boarders and skiers. Super thin, super comfy, and super warm.

Zipper hoodie- There's different weight hoodies. When I ride in cold temps, I grab my $100 super-heavy weight, thumb holes in the cuffs, "too heavy to wear indoors like ever" hoodie.

Glove liners made of silk or spandex- same stuff the thermals are made of. Makes all the difference until you're on the bike for more than 45 minutes. If I'm riding longer than that in real cold, I add another pair of glove liners. They're $12 a pair on Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IUH9UKG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A fleece "turtle neck" sleeve that pulls down over my head to cover my face below the eyes, ears, and neck. They're usually 10-12" long and two layers of fleece. http://www.amazon.com/Chaos--CTR-Chinook-Fleece-Gaiter/dp/B002ZG7RCG/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1414855281&sr=1-5&keywords=fleece+neck+warmer

Knit watch cap- pulled down over my ears.

Once the sleeve is down over my face and the watch cap is down over my ears, I strap on the helmet. You can fold the sleeve down to expose your face if you get too warm while waiting at lights and to pull the bike out of the garage while the wife does whatever (happens a LOT when I dress like this, which means it's warm enough to ride :). If my face gets cold through the sleeve even, I tie a bandana over my face, old-west bandit style "This is a stick-up. Hand over the loot".

Glasses or goggles that cover the slit made between beanie and face sleeve. Glasses should be one-piece plastic frames that allow no air to pass between the lenses and the bridge of the nose. Wire frame glasses allow the eyes to dry out.

When finally dressed like this (but with leather chaps, jackets, and gloves and the rest of your normal street clothes) you sorta look like the guy in the middle- http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/31/article-2531409-1A59815500000578-260_634x456.jpg

Last Christmas I rode from Berkeley, CA to Rocklin, CA, 125 miles away in 40F weather going up in the late morning and 30F weather going back home late-nite. It wasn't until the last 20 minutes of the ride home that my hands and crotch got unpleasantly cold, but not so cold that it was painful.

Hope this helps.

I got a digital casio watch about a year ago. Works well for me: you can set alarms, it has a stopwatch, a timer, and it keeps the date. Battery's also guaranteed for 10 years. For 12 bucks, I think it's a good deal.

An analog watch wouldn't work as well since much of my work requires timing/counting down.

Casio RFT-100
I got this watch for my birthday last season and I would highly recommend it.
It's the smallest and lightest watch I've ever worn yet the numbers are large and easily readable with a quick glance.
It's got many different options, all of which are simple to use. The preset halves are especially useful.
It's a bit more expensive than most digital watches but trust me, you won't regret buying it. Although I'm not sure if they make them anymore so get in quick!

More seriously, if I were looking for a gshock I'd probably be leaning towards this one. Solar, atomic, chrono, WR 200. A touch over your budget, but not much.

A cheaper alternative, not solar, not atomic, and not as good looking, but still WR 200 would be a DW6900.

Luminox makes gorgeous watches but have a shitty customer service. Mine fogs up in cold weather sometimes, and while it does not seem to affect timekeeping, I never got a reply when I tried getting in touch with Luminox.

Others have suggested G5600 but there is a Glide model with tide times & mode phase, useful for surfers.

Other options are the red G7900 or more subtle. The G9000 mudman is for those into muddy outdoor activities; I really like the round buttons.

Also, there's no such thing as a completely waterproof watch. There's watches that are water resistant down to absurd depths, like the Rolex Deepsea, but even that is not wholly waterproof. The Orient Mako might be a good choice; there's 50% off codes all over the internet for that website. You also couldn't really go wrong with another Timex. Either way, you're almost certainly looking for a diver watch. That link should be a good start.

edit: and if you don't mind spending a little bit more money, you could look into the famed Seiko Black/Orange Monster. I don't find them all that appealing myself, but there's tons of people out there who swear by them.

edit #2: I'm ashamed that I forgot all about the Vostok Amphibia. Those fuckers are indestructible, and way more unique than anything else you'd find on Amazon.

I just got a G-shock awg100. So far I love it. It's relatively small for a G-shock. The atomic feature is pretty neat. The analog/digital thing was a little weird at first, but I got used to it quickly.

I use the even less expensive Casio F-201wa. It has multiple alarms, a timer, and a stopwatch. It's dirt cheap, so I don't care if it gets messed up in the shop. What's weird is the cheap stuff always seems to last longer, and the expensive stuff seems to almost immediately suffer from a catastrophic accident.

I would get the GW-B5600-BC it's the best square G-Shock under $200 with bluetooth and the combi bracelet.

My work watch. I got it as a gift back in 2000, I'm surprised they still sell it.

Also I'll wear this every now and again, but the weight gets to me after awhile.

Also, when I was in 7th grade my dad bought me this watch(first one on left) as a gift. Shows the early planting of geeky seeds because why would a 7th grader need this watch? I didn't, but I thought it was the coolest watch ever created, evar.
