I got THESE. they're a bit more expensive than alternatives, but they make up for it because:

Do what I did, buy this.
No idea why star mats are expensive, but this is a great alternative, and it isn't so slick that your ships just slide around.
Dude. Cork yoga mats.
My hands tend to get sweaty and slip on my mat regardless of whether I'm doing normal yoga or hot yoga. I bought a yoga towel for hot yoga, which helped my hands, but my feet don't get as sweaty and then they'd slip on the yoga towel. I did halfsies for a bit.
Then I got an Amazon gift card for doing a biometric screening at work and used it to buy this cork yoga mat on Amazon. And I. DO. NOT. SLIP. Even in a super-sweaty and demanding hot power vinyasa class.
Highly recommend if you're willing/able to swing the cost.
I would be happy too. I used a tutorial video from YouTube as a starting point. https://youtu.be/spdescYFqIE His video states that it can be done for $150 but that is assuming you already have a bunch of stuff on hand. Overall mine cost about $125 and that involves me using an old table as a starting point.
Instead of bulding the legs from scratch I used the base of an old table, part of this was to save cost, part was to eliminate what I considered a lot of bulkiness. The playable surface measures 48in x 48in.
I decided against installing the cup holders and dice trays as I felt that they took up too much space. Instead I plan on installing removable cup holders in the future so that when they are not being used they can be removed.
Overall I was able to complete the initial building in one day, this will take more time if you are new to woodworking or if you have to build the legs from scratch. It than took another week to properly finish the wood. I have 1 coat of stain and 6 coats of polyurethane on all wood surfaces, I sanded with 320grit sandpaper between each coat of polyurethane. After the final coat of polyurethane, I let it dry for 48 hours and did a final wetsanding with 1500 grit sandpaper to provide a silkly smooth finish.
For the padded surface I used a 6x6 yoga mat bought off of Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JM73RY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_dp_T2_1pymzb2HN45ZZ I than cut it down to size and secured to surface with removable double sided tape.
For my project I used the following materials, some of which I had on hand but a lot I bought.

If anyone has any questions I will try to respond in the most timely manner.
Mousepad material is designed to be low-friction so you can slide a plastic thing over it easily. You don't want that for X-Wing. What you want is something grippy, durable, thick enough so that it can lay across two tables without sagging, and won't bunch up or attract pet hair.
The only gaming mat you want is going to be a yoga mat. Get a black extra-wide yoga mat and speckle some stars on it with an old toothbrush. Cut it into two 3x3 foot sections and throw away the little excess.
Here you'll get two game mats out of one yoga mat for $23:
http://www.amazon.com/Extra-Wide-Long-Deluxe-Yoga/dp/B002PA1KWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409793143&sr=8-1&keywords=extra+wide+yoga+mat
Seriously, the only thing better than a yoga mat would be a yoga mat with nebulae and stuff printed on it. Until then, this is really the best thing.
Here you go.
Yoga Direct Extra Wide Yoga Mat, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MTWI48/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_9JtHub0323YV1
First off, congratulations on losing almost 100 pounds! That's an amazing accomplishment.
When I started doing DDP Yoga, my apartment had carpeted floors, so I never had this issue. However, my current apartment has hardwood floors, and the first time I used my old cheap yoga mat, which was super thin, it just killed my knees. Just getting into safety zone was painful, and I certainly felt it the next day.
I started having a foam cushion nearby and using it when I knew I had to be on my knees, but having to place it and remove it constantly was really inconvenient. I ended up buying a much thicker yoga mat (1/2 inch thick mat, similar to this one on Amazon) and that definitely helped prevent this. So I would recommend that.
I bought this one. Works well.
Yoga Direct Extra Wide Yoga Mat, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MTWI48/
Amazon sells a relatively inexpensive 6x3 black yoga mat. I use it for Star Wars: Armada and epic-scale X-Wing games and it works great.
An extra wide yoga mat works great as a play surface. I don't know if you can find anything with more grip. Link.
A good way to start out would be with 200-300 point matches. Still manageable to play on a 3x3, and can be a quick way to learn the ropes and see some combos working out. Time could definitely be an issue, as a full game with teaching would be well over 2 hours long. Along those lines, this is a super cheap way to get a full sized play area for much cheaper than the FFG mats. Plus, if you're playing at 200-300 points, you can have two games going, each on a 3x3. You can definitely mark up one side to have a middle line, deployment zone, etc...
There's the other ones that people recommend for people starting out:
Limit upgrades on ships
Limit # of squadrons/no squads to start (It can be nice not worrying about a whole command)
No objectives(passing initiative may help or custom starter objectives. Contested outpost is always an easy one)
Etc, etc...
There's a lot to this game. Keeping it simple to start is recommended. Love the idea!
Make sure you anchor whatever you build firmly to the ground, ceiling, or wall, so you can always push yourself away from it if you need to get out. If you're stuck inside and it's not anchored, it'll be harder to wrench yourself free.
Don't use shampoo for lubricant, it will burn if you get it in your eyes, nose, mouth.
You might look into these yoga mats: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTRKO6Q/ref=twister_B01CTQC9FQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 they're quite squishy, but have a smooth surface that's easy to clean. Make sure to do a spot test with whatever kind of lubricant you use, so you can see if there's a chemical reaction. You don't want it to break down. Anyway, you might be able to construct a sleeve of some sort with the yoga mats, then you just need something to apply inward force. Maybe slip it between a box spring and mattress to start with? Particularly if you have a memory foam mattress that is less structured. Again, make sure to anchor the bed to the wall somehow so you can get out. Consider installing a snorkel for air.
Be safe.
Yoga mat would work. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MTWI48/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1346YB5THR6F4&coliid=I2KBG6KXFX4S6Q
Cut it in half and you have two 3x3 mats. Lot of people use mats.
I got this one [here] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IGAQ7KS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and I absolutely love it. I've been using it for a little over a month now. I'm a tall guy, and this works just fine for me. Not too expensive either.
I would suggest just one off of amazon with good reviews like this one . I still use my first mat which is a no name brand for outdoor practice so as not to hurt my jade one, so it's not like you stop using it if you do want to upgrade. In all honesty, if I weren't 200ish lbs, 6'1, I never would have upgraded, but I found the extra long mat quite convenient. A yoga mat doesn't make you better, you don't even need one to practice. I don't even use my jade in my apartment, because using the carpet helps me to work on spreading my fingers and toes and really creating strong bases. I think I do much better in class as a result. I would suggest making a better yoga mat a reward for good practice; that's what I did because it really showed me I was dedicated to yoga and not the idea of yoga. I would also suggest if you decide you're going to get one, to find people and ask to feel them. They're all a bit different; I believe the criticism with Jade is that they're thin/hard (to me it's perfect, I don't have knee/joint issues that happen from hard floors). I never tried The Mat, or Manduka because I tried the Jade and knew it was what I wanted. If you really wanted to help your practice, I would suggest investing in a cheap set of blocks and a strap.
I have an extra long mat that I got from amazon.com, I can't recall the brand right now but it was mid-range (not Lulu, not the cheapest out there). I like it, I believe it's 72" long, but I could actually stand to have a longer mat for certain poses.
Good looking 72" long mat: http://www.amazon.com/Aurorae-Northern-Lights-Golden-Focal/dp/B0050D1R36/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1377676197&sr=8-11
Even longer but quality looks sketchy: http://www.amazon.com/Extra-Wide-Long-Deluxe-Yoga/dp/B002PA1KWK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1377676197&sr=8-2
So at least you know they're out there!
I bought this yoga mat from amazon: Extra Wide and Extra Long 1/4'' Deluxe Yoga Mat - Black
Used white acrylic paint for the stars. Painted on using a combination of a paper clip, thumb tack and various nails. Different pressure will give you different sizes. I also mixed in some other kids paints I had laying around to get some other colors.
I use this one. It's held up very well for me, but I don't do regular practice on it. I use it for the purpose mentioned above and for doing static things like frog pose for 20/30 minutes at a time, practicing splits outside of classes, etc. It's the same consistency as cheap-ish beginner mats that wouldn't (for me) hold up well to more than ~10 sweaty/hard flow classes.
I just ordered THIS mat and it will arrive next week.
3' x 6' whose length I will trim to fit my table.
I'll let you know how it works out.
Oversized Yoga Mat would likely be a good choice.
Could buy something like (: https://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Direct-6-Feet-Square-Olive/dp/B003JMI2F6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466445662&sr=8-2&keywords=Oversized+Yoga+mat )
Then cut to fit your playspace + potentially buy double-sided tape to lock it down if your wanting it to not move at all, or some other lock down alternative. When your done playing, can even roll it up and toss it aside.
I am ordering the first:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BPQDNM4/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HYIOJAI/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001FZTO06/
Get this ships and space rocks don't really move around from bumping at all and it's super cheap and exactly the right size. This is on my game table at home and I have x-wing mats since most official tournaments require those.
I've converted all my board game group to Yoga Mats.
They are amazing play surfaces as they stop things from sliding around and have enough cushion that it makes it easier to pick up sleeved cards or cardboard pieces.
The only downside is that it really stops things from sliding, so any game that has a refillable market that requires you to slide cards down before refilling is a bit annoying.
So in that case I put down a playmat down for the market area on top of the yoga mat. (Such as Century Spice Road).
Yoga Mat I use
Playmat I use
I think it depends on the studio...mine has a mix of fitness model types that look like they could do a handstand on their pinkys, and those that modify at least one section or more. The instructors are so awesome about helping everyone target the right muscles without the wrong kind of pain.
Those donuts are taller than I was picturing. They are stable? It is very cool that your studio offers them.
This is the mat I use. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WD3HGJX/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_N8caCb8RJGCCF
Nice! Do you like it? I've been really interested in this one from Amazon but it doesn't have a ton of reviews https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6OCQR7/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=APGKW39CKGKFT
Sorry for the late answers, was away and didn't check reddit.
Okay, mats: they are called "junk" mats.
Two kinds: mat between two borders that you roll out and then put the other two edges on, and 4-puzzle-piece mat.
roll pro: nice and flat
roll con: will eventually 'stretch out'.
puzzle pro: cheap and cheap to ship
puzzle con: eventually gets fray-y on the piece edges.
Roll: http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E5%A4%A7%E6%B4%8B%E5%8C%96%E5%AD%A6-%E9%BA%BB%E9%9B%80%E3%83%9E%E3%83%83%E3%83%88-%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A3%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF%E3%83%9E%E3%83%83%E3%83%88/dp/B0017KHW3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462492513&sr=8-1&keywords=junk+mat
Puzzle: http://www.amazon.co.jp/Jean-easy-mat-japan-import/dp/B000QUHCEQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1462492539&sr=8-4&keywords=%E9%BA%BB%E9%9B%80%E3%83%9E%E3%83%83%E3%83%88
I definitely suggest the roll. just don't lift it with tiles on it.
I'm not the OP, but this is the one I have https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MTWI48/
This is the mat I use. Works great:
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B007MTWI48
Amazon. I bought [this one] (http://www.amazon.com/YogaAccessories-TM-Extra-Wide-Deluxe/dp/B001FLK6IY?ie=UTF8&keywords=extra%20long%20yoga%20mat&qid=1458884152&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-40) and it's good. It's 7ft long and wider than normal mats.
http://www.amazon.com/Mahjong-mat-junk-japan/dp/B0017KHW3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462114529&sr=8-1&keywords=junk+mat
Probably the cheapest, that you can get for these.
I tried felt prior to shelling out the cash for an official playmat. I thought it would work out well but in practice the small fibers of the felt kept grabbing the ship's bases when I tried to move them which then jerked the whole mat and shook everything around. Also it didn't like to sit flat without a good deal of effort. Ultimately I had to be very cautious in making any movements which slowed down the game and detracted from the experience.
Maybe a higher quality felt would work better, but I would not recommend it. I've seen this recommended around here before, you can cut out two playmats and get a nice grippy mats with enough space for epic play as well
My item: I need a good yoga mat for when I go to the gym or just when I do yoga/pilates workouts at home.
I summon /u/mynthe. You are very nice on RAOA and I'm glad to see you're also here too
Like I said, the mat im using now is too stretchy, has no grip, so it moves a lot when I'm trying to do certain excersies.
This is it.
It’s not a major brand, but I have tried a few in the $50 range & I love this. Had it for a year, use daily for ashtanga practice, still perfect. Don’t slip at all, from day 1. https://www.amazon.com/IUGA-Unbeatable-Performance-Certified-Lightweight/dp/B079BK15PT/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=iuga&psc=1&qid=1572424304&sr=8-7
You might try this:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FLK6IY/
84'' L x 36'' W
Nice work!
Just throwing in another option for anyone reading this thread: An extra wide yoga mat can work too.
Pros: Can get an epic size mat w/o a seam (or 2 3x3 mats out of it). It has a better grip than the offical mats. Pretty cheap if you find a buddy to split one with you.
Cons: Kind of bulky to haul around with you. It's a bit soft, spongy, and bumpy. Not sure how well stars painted on it will stick.
As far as mats go get an extra wide yoga mat. They might not look the best but they are the best I have used in keeping the ships in place.

Primarily at home. My first foray into at-home yoga was through the Yoga with Adriene youtube channel. She has years and years of free practices posted there. I currently pay for her membership site and have been using that at home. It has a lot of the youtube content but also has a lot of series and special practices reserved for members.
I suggest getting a Gaiam extra thick mat (usually $25-$30 on amazon) and then using a foam pad like this to provide extra protection to sore spots until you notice you don't need it.
Yoga mat. Available everywhere yoga mats are sold. They make them up to 6' x 6', just be prepared to spend a lot.
EDIT: OK, they're not even that much. https://www.amazon.ca/YogaDirect-Square-Yoga-Blue-6-Feet/dp/B003JM73RY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473039415&sr=8-1&keywords=large+yoga+mat
I think this is what I use I can't remember but it was cheap and from Amazon
YogaAccessories (TM) Extra Wide / Extra Long 1/4'' Deluxe Yoga Mat https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001FLK6IY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_L0l4xb0TAFQ0F
I then put a Yoga Rat Towel on top. The towel is long enough and the width is good. The width doesn't cover the entire XL mat so if you want to move a foot to the rubber for whatever reason you can very easily.
THE XL YOGA TOWEL for XL yoga mats: 100% Microfiber, super-absorbent, enhances grip and protects your mat. Many colors to choose from. 26" x 85" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009AZ5B0K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_51l4xbEAK7A9T

Mmhm, like a cheapo folding table. The kind your parents would bring camping. The lip would be at most an inch. The idea is that with that lip, you could rack tiles, dice won't fly out, etc.
Size of the table itself should be big enough that it should fit a junk mat, since that would be exactly what the table is replacing.
Yoga Direct Extra Wide Yoga Mat, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MTWI48/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_f9u1AbEMSFF77
Most 24x72 (2ftx6ft) yoga mats are about 15 dollars on amazon.
The 36x72 (2ftx6ft) yoga mats are about 25 dollars.
36x72x.2 Inche yoga mat
I have the same problem. I got this Manduka rubber grip mat and no more hands or feet sliding around.
I'm not sure if I understood correctly, but Junk mat is awesome. I play almost all my games on it, and on tournaments everyone who brings a set seems to have it.
Gaiam Athletic Yoga Series dynaMAT Xtra-Large Mat, Black/Gray, 5mm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N2PBOXW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kgKEDb36RFRCY
That's the one I use, I'm 6' 3" its decent enough, gets a little slippery if you sweat a ton. For the price it's hard to beat for a beginner.
The Yoga Mat on Amazon is a great cheap alternative for $30. It's EXACTLY 3x6 and what's great is the material is super non-slip. So nudging is limited.
Hope this helps!!
I bought this mat a few months ago from Amazon and it’s only $34.

I have this and it's awesome to play on.

Pinched nerves, migraines, blah blah. You mess with a spine, there are going to be issues. Don't be like me and wait 12 years to get serious about doing something about it, is my best advice! And do NOT stop doing what works for you just because you get better (she says to herself...)!
Ok, try not to laugh TOO hard at my incredibly artful drawings! Here is the yoga/stretching program that I do daily. This is the very basic start of it. As these became easier I upped the time held, how far I reached, added new positions, etc. I also included the little hand strengthening set I just got from Amazon. Nerve damage can be a sneaky little bastard, and hand weakness can sneak up on you. Dropping reins sucks. If it's an issue, might be something to consider. I'm also using it to get better at my piano playing. Also sharing the Amazon links to my favorite (and cheap) yoga mat and assistance/stretch strap. :)
Mat here.
Strap here.
Play the basic starter game from the box a few times... If you and your friends dig it, then consider some accessories and extra ships. (Sticking to the accessories here, I'll let others give tips on the ships, since now just buy 2 of everything).
I ordered a yoga mat and cut it in half, to make two 36"x36" mats that work pretty well

The ones I got. I like em thick.
I asked a similar question for a garage floor. Stable mats came up as a general purpose flooring option. I have these 6ftx6ft yoga mats: http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Direct-6-Feet-Square-Blue/dp/B003JM73RY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458767791&sr=8-1&keywords=6ft+yoga+mat
Thin and can be folded up to an extent. Won't slide but I'd rather have a different surface to pivot on.

Best surface, no-slip. Cut it in half for 2 or keep it big for epic.
I bought a 48"x72" black yoga mat. The bases grip the surface beautifully. I used a white paint marker I bought from Michaels to make stars on it. Here's a link to what I have. I'm using mobile so not sure if it will work.

This one.
Most of the companies that make larger mats are the ones that make the more expensive mats. This is covered in the FAQ and search.

If it's just to do your workout on, you're probably better off getting a rubber mat from Walmart or a sporting goods store. Look for the kind that you put underneath a treadmill because they're at least 5x8. That'll catch a lot of your sweat and you won't be falling off it like if you were using a yoga mat. Plus they're really thin and can be rolled up and out of the way between workouts.
The main thing is not to get the foam mats or anti-fatigue mats at Home Depot. With all the explosive movements in Insanity, those options are an easy way to roll an ankle.

If you think you may want to use weights (barbell/dumbbells), you may want to opt for a stall mat, available almost anywhere livestock feed is sold. Don't want to damage the floors.
just bought as well from amazon and cut in half

my bad was the wrong link
Yoga mats or puzzle mats are not as expensive as Judo mats, but might do the job, depending on their thickness and the floor underneath.
Example of a Yoga mat:

I need hangers cause I'm an idiot and don't have enough with me to even fill up part of the closet. I also need a rice cooker cause food? And this pad thing so that I can work out in my apartment and so that when my boyfriend visits he doesn't sleep on the bare floor. XD I guess they link with apartmenty stuff, but in totally different rooms. XD And to infinity and beyond!
4 balls of playdough............except playdough dries out and hardens...........thick yoga mat trimmed to fit.........

Changing your floor space won't affect tracking, as long as you are in view of the sensors you're good.
For the static, put down some mats, like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BPQDNM4/
The bespin one from FFG is the best but its always out of stock.
If you get ffg mats be careful to not store them up and down but side to side or else you get this weird egg crate texture.
If you're not going the two 3x3 mats from ffg style, which should cost you ~$40 each, I suggest the yoga mat style. Remember you'll actually need it to be slightly larger than 6'x3'... ideally you get one that's more like 6'x4' so you can fit cards and such on the edges, but those can get costly and it's not totally needed. The deal to beat is this 6'x3' yoga mat for ~$25 shipping included. You can get slightly cheaper on amazon for the same looking thing but not black.
That's what a junk mat is. A plastic ridge fitted onto a mat so that you can make a table lip with a nice padded surface for playing on. When you buy one it comes with both.
Also, they sell specific tables with the lip built in. You can find both on Amazon.

Oh! Yoga mat!
For yogaing. All the yogiest yogaing.
Edit: I decided I need to add an explanation. More because I want to. I go to the gym three days a week. I run and do the weight machines. On my off days I don't end up with a lot I can do, I have a yoga dvd I've been trying to do but the carpet in my apartment is so thin! When I end up on the floor my hip bones dig into the concrete. It hurts enough to keep me from doing yoga anymore.
Anyone know where I can buy a mahjong junk mat in sg? similar to this?

This one has made it through a month so far..

But it won't last more than 3 by the looks of it..
I have this mat, and I think it's pretty great. https://www.amazon.ca/Gaiam-Athletic-dynaMAT-Xtra-Large-Black/dp/B00N2PBOXW/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?adgrpid=62637955378&gclid=CjwKCAjwq-TmBRBdEiwAaO1en9i2kmM2hBg5kDwkjJIC8dOsuAkB_jXtRfgHRYZUU6BTYwocVPxCYhoCxZcQAvD_BwE&hvadid=310059758383&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9000890&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=b&hvrand=686050529690303264&hvtargid=kwd-319857937154&hydadcr=28318_9827689&keywords=big+yoga+mat&qid=1557747262&s=gateway&sr=8-9
http://www.amazon.com/Mahjong-mat-junk-japan/dp/B0017KHW3A/ Sukiyaki Japan (via Amazon) is offering free shipping to the US. Not sure if they're doing the same for New Zealanders but if they are this is a pretty good price.
I got this one for a couple of bucks less. It's good quality and very thick. It ended up being too thick for me so I got a different one.
Yeah just go buy one of those mats for a few bucks, or buy something like this and cut some squares out of it, that way you can be sure they work well and you don't need to bother him again (unless you've seen his speakers then go off what you've seen). Apologize (even if you don't mean it lol) but go down there with it. Just emphasize how you understand this is an inconvenience but that him doing this just one time will make for hours worth of more pleasant nights for you.
Also it may help to let him know you have a sensory condition that makes the vibrations torturous. Seriously a lot of people that isn't even remotely close to a possibility in their head. You kind of have to kindly educate them to be more empathetic towards you. It's not an insult to you, it's just human nature. But he'll be way more likely to do it if you buy it for him because it will not only make it so he doesn't have to put forth as much effort but it also shows him you're willing to put some money behind it.
Happy Birthday!! =)
So sweet that you are going out with your sisters! You deserve to get treated for all you do. My friend bought herself a few days on Blue Apron through groupon and now is able to feel more comfortable cooking at home and recreating the meals. Perhaps it could be a good gift for you too and a way to invite someone special over for a meal? =0
Also now that you have more space, think of adding in a yoga mat or ball or meditation cushion to the new area for a little me place and time right at home. its worked for me. =)
happy to talk to more about how i learned how to make it a part of my life and how i learned how (free excellent sources!)
Stuff & Thangs
I have an Iuga Pro mat from amazon. It has awesome grip and cushion. I don’t slide around at all during hot yoga. Only downside is it has a bit of a scent to it.
