IMPORTANT!!! For anyone suffering from bedbugs, purchase yourself a bag of Diatomaceous Earth.

http://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY/ref=sr_1_6?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1323878596&sr=1-6

Sprinkly that shit around your house and within three weeks, not a single bed bug in sight. This coming from sleeping and waking up to 6 - 8 of them crawling around in my sheets.

u/aelfric · 34 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

Surround any area with Diatomaceous Earth and the problem is solved. If you have a nest, surround the ant nest. Personally, I put this around my house. Haven't had an ant inside since I started doing it 30+ years ago.

u/meatiershower · 16 pointsr/Austin

you want diatomaceous earth rather than poisons - the poisons won't work very well in my experience. Just leave the DE on the ground, under couches, etc, for a few weeks (long enough for all of the eggs that have been laid to hatch) and no more fleas.

u/MisunderstoodDemon · 15 pointsr/vegas

Buy this and put it all along the walls

Find any holes in the walls/floor/ceilings and caulk them up. Buy food grade Diatomaceous Earth and a powder duster and dust that shit along the base of all the walls. It's a natural powder made from seashells that cuts up the bugs exoskeletons and kills them pretty quickly. Don't leave any food or water out - many roaches are actually looking for water - especially if you see them in the bathroom.

*Also, this is not the first or last time you will see roaches. You can't control the other tenants cleanliness around you and it's NYC. Those fuckers are everywhere.

As /u/fallacybuffet mentioned, diatomaceous earth is a great non-toxic way to battle cockroaches. It's food grade, so you and your cat can still eat the roaches it kills!

For a more toxic solution, I bought Tempo Ultra SC insecticide to spray all along the outside of our house. You'll need a garden sprayer, too. The morning after I first sprayed the outside of our house, I found a dozen dead cockroaches on our sidewalk. That was a month or two ago, and I have only seen one cockroach inside since then. It was dead.

I also bought Maxforce FC Magnum get bait. I noticed a swarm of roaches using our backyard picnic table as a community center at night, so I spread the gel in the cracks of the support beams and a few other spots in the backyard cockroaches would seem to frequent.

We never had a huge cockroach problem, but after we saw almost six in 24 hours, my girlfriend really started freaking out and drastic measures were needed. These solutions have worked for me.

u/sassXcore · 11 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

If you're looking for an animal-safe solution to fleas, try diatomaceous earth in food (edible) grade. I bought a big 50 lb. bag on Amazon to treat the house and the yard. NOTHING else would kill the fleas, including professional pest services. If you want to know more, I'm happy to tell you exactly how we did it.

u/sevendayconstant · 9 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Fucking ants. I've been battling various types of these jerks for a while now.

The first go-round was with some ants that were burrowing under my front walk (brick). I kind of blew it off until they displaced so much dirt that the bricks started shifting. I tried a couple different things but Terro Ant Bait killed them in 24 hours. I sprinkled the granules and the ants immediately starting taking them into the colony. The next morning my walk was covered with hundreds of dead ants. They haven't been back since (1 year and counting).

My current battle is with some leaf cutter ants. These guys only eat leaves so traditional ant baits and poisons don't really work. This colony has decimated one of my new planted trees. The only thing that keeps them at bay is a combination of Boric Acid, Diatomaceous Earth, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. The boric acid has been covered already. The Diatomaceous Earth is basically a powder that acts as razor blades on the ants exoskeleton. The cayenne pepper and cinnamon are just a last resort because I'm at my wits end. I cover a 2'-3' radius from the ant hill with everything listed. I check on it every week or two and reapply when I see an ant creeping around.

Good luck with your ants. They sure can be a pain in the ass.

Diatomaceous Earth is the answer!!

Buy this: http://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405468836&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=diometrious+earth

Sprinkle it EVERYWHERE, and leave it for a few days. Vaccum it up, repeat if needed.

For those who do not know about Diatomaceous Earth:
It can be ordered as "food grade", so you can even eat it to help clean your system if ya like. It is non toxic to your pets as well... kills mechanically. It is like tiny little razors to ticks, fleas, etc.... but completely harmless to mammals. They even put it in stored grain (farming / silos) to keep the bugs out. Just keep in mind this stuff needs to stay dry, so don't go soaking your carpet or letting a bunch of humidity in.

You might also try heat killing them. There are companies that will come and basically use heaters to heat your house to like 120 degrees and leave it like that for a day and that kills 'em all. I don't know much more about it other than heat kills them. The best part is that they cannot hide from the heat!

u/Nyxtoggler · 9 pointsr/washingtondc

Stuff gets into their joints and they basically dehydrate themselves to death. And since it's a mechanical (think rubbing lots of teensy sharp knives all over) process, they don't become resistant to chemicals. Boric acid works too, but nothing like some diatomaceous earth to clean out arthropods.

Food grade diatomaceous earth is the answer to these and other little devils. Leave it down for a few days to make sure the eggs hatch and the offspring are also ripped to shreds I say.

u/paulwheaton · 6 pointsr/Frugal

Make sure you get the right stuff. Make sure it is food grade diatomaceous earth. Make sure it is NOT for pools. Make sure it does not contain anything else besides diatomaceous earth. Check this diatomaceous earth article which recommends this stuff.

u/rabid_briefcase · 6 pointsr/Austin

A great way to kill pests is Diatomaceous Earth is basically bug-sized shards of glass. ( Microscopic view ) Some home builders sprinkle the stuff inside walls and under floorboards to help prevent bug problems.

Safe for humans and pets, can be eaten (some people use it as a diet aid), but when roaches, ants, and other shell-based insects crawl on it, they die. Here's one of many videos show how the stuff gets inside their shells, killing them without risk to you.

u/koalaberries · 6 pointsr/AskReddit

However, they can climb on to you and you can transport them across the line.

DE does rock though. I've used it very successfully to get rid of fleas. Cheap DE

u/yoonamaniac · 6 pointsr/houseplants

They lay eggs in the soil, so they multiply rapidly. I used mosquito dunks when watering the plants, and then when the top layer of soil is dry after a couple of days, I sprayed diatomaceous earth - food grade on the soil liberally. The yellow stickies all around the plants caught the ones which somehow miraculously managed to survive. It took about three weeks to not see any flying around.

Food grade dietemateous earth. Get a duster and spread it underneath all of the baseboards on the exterior walls of the house. The DE is only harmful to insects with exoskeletons, and is safe for humans and pets. It should stay in place through routine vacuuming as well. This alone should significantly cut down on the insects in the house. You can also go nuts spreading it in crawl spaces and attics to limit the amount of bugs as well.

u/Azhain · 5 pointsr/daddit

Don't be too scared, it's not something you want to be breathing in like you wouldn't want to breathe in lots of flour or baking soda or anything either. They do sell Diatomaceous Earth in food grade however so it's certainly not inherently harmful if ingested. Some people eat it on purpose as a supplement.

u/DisfunkyMonkey · 4 pointsr/Advice

Food grade DE diatomaceous earth can be bought cheap through Amazon.com & it makes micro-cuts all over the exoskeleton of insects and causes them to dehydrate & die. Won't hurt you or kids or pets. Try sprinkling it all over the corners and drawers of your home, and maybe place some dry pet food mixed liberally with DE in a bowl somewhere to lure them. We're talking less than $25 bucks for 10 pounds of lightweight powder that doesn't hurt you but mechanically (versus chemically) injures and kills the little bastards. It's worth a try.

u/Mycd · 4 pointsr/BackYardChickens

For a passive (less effective, but more healthy) product, pick up some diatomaceous earth, spread around wherever your hen takes dust baths, nestbox, in their food, everywhere.
DE is a powdery gritty natural product made from fossilized microscopic plankton(diatoms), that helps kill and prevent lice/mites/etc

u/Shadowpriest · 3 pointsr/Aquariums

Diatomaceous earth (food grade). Load that into a bulb duster and go to town on the perimeter of your room, every surface you have on your floor, unscrew any outlets to blow the powder in there, and get every room you have that surrounds the room where your tank is kept. The reason why I say food grade is that it is safe for human and pet consumption. You can try the borax and sugar water traps but I think that attracts more than provides results.

Diatomaceous earth acts like death by 1000 papercuts. It shreds their exoskeleton and dries them out. I would suggest covering your tank when you apply the powder and remove the cover after it's settled. You may want to pick up a dust mask if you have asthma or allergies as this may aggravate your lung sacs. If you have noncarpeted flooring, push this powder into any crevice you have. If you have carpeted flooring, liberally dust and leave it sit for a few days before vacuuming. When you vacuum, you'll want to cover your tank until the powder dissipates and settles.

It'll be messy but I guarantee this 100%. Helps take care of other creepy crawlies too.

Everyone needs some diatomaceous earth in their lives. Here's a huge 10 lbs bag $22. Spread it all over everywhere bugs can enter your home and all around the foundation. It's bug kryptonite and completely safe for all vertebrates.

u/SickOfAZ · 3 pointsr/phoenix

Get DE (food grade, not for pools), mix with water and spray like crazy. I'm not sure if they make a bigger bag. This would be the best non-toxic route. Also clean your yard out of any debris like dead plants and clutter.

My dad has always sworn by diatomaceous earth for ants. It's a bunch of tiny little crystals that destroy shelled insects, but is completely and totally harmless to us and pets.

u/VanTil · 3 pointsr/legaladvice

If I can make a suggestion that isn't at all of the legal variety:

My wife and I had a similar problem with an infestation and after trying everything we could find at the store (including spending far too much on an exterminator) we heard about Diatomaceous Earth on reddit. Works on all cockroaches and is pretty inexpensive (something like $20 for a 10 lb bag on Amazon). You can find it here

Good Luck.

u/gliz5714 · 3 pointsr/Pets

2nd this. FOOD GRADE ONLY.

You can get a massive bag that will cover your house/apt 10 times over on Amazon for $20

This also will kill spiders, ants, cockroaches, etc (any hard shelled insect). You can sprinkle some on the animals as well, but it will dry out their skin (and yours).

u/fallacybuffet · 3 pointsr/NewOrleans

Thanks. I'm going with food-grade diatomaceous earth. Seems to be good for ants, roaches, fleas, and termites. Being the cheap b that I am, just trying to decide if I want to spring an extra 10 for a bespoke duster, or try to use an empty dish-soap bottle or empty parmesan-cheese container.

ETA: I just read a review on Amazon (can't find a way to link that specific review) which states that diatomaceous earth is effective against fire-ant colonies. Dude has 5 acres. It took him three years of diligent application of DE dust to every hill he found, but in the fourth year his property was fire-ant free, while his neighbors still have fire-ants. It's on the second page of reviews.

u/yeaokbb · 3 pointsr/CBTS_Stream

I recently bought a big bag of Diatomaceous Earth off Amazon for $20 after reading it’s a natural and safe flea and bug treatment for dogs and cats. I spread some handfuls along an ant trail that developed in our kitchen and presses it into the cracks they were coming through. By the next day there were no more ants and they have yet to reappear. It’s completely safe to eat too but you need to take it on an empty stomach because to adsorbs to everything, which is great for detoxing your insides.

u/Vailhem · 2 pointsr/livestock

I just ordered some. I couldn't find any negative accounts with it ... and even the comments & such I could find weren't knocking it but more just saying it didn't meet the expectations they'd had ... but most of those even admitted that the bar was pretty high relative to all the positive things they'd read.

I might even try eating some myself ... it doesn't seem to do any harm and who knows what it'll drag out of me!

u/Guygan · 2 pointsr/gardening

Sprinkle this around the plants:

u/omg_pwnies · 2 pointsr/self

I know this feeling, I grew up in Florida.

Try diatomaceous earth for roaches, it should work great. You can buy it from Amazon in a food grade quality so it's safe to use in the kitchen and it is cheap. It works against ants and fleas too.

u/PurpleCoco · 2 pointsr/phoenix

A lot of comments about DE. Make sure it's food grade diatomaceous earth and not DE for the pool. You can get it from a feed store. Try not to breath it because it's bad for your lungs.

u/absopoodle · 2 pointsr/SantasLittleHelpers

This is the one I got for myself for my house/family and it worked a treat! It is, however, 10lbs of the stuff.... It should last us several lifetimes!

Also, add a duster to the list. You should keep people/pets away and wear a respirator/dust mask when using the duster to apply DE, but dusters spread much more evenly/finely and can get in cracks/bedding/furniture better. To apply DE to pet fur, just pour it on (try to avoid their nose/mouth area).

u/gfkfdjgkgljg · 2 pointsr/stopsmoking

they might, any health food store will have it, make sure it's food grade, it works wonders in getting rid of all the toxic build up in our bodies, it's pretty cheap and you only take 1tsp to 1tbs a day, you can buy a 10lb bag from amazon for cheap

https://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1480613693&sr=1-1&keywords=diatomaceous+earth+food+grade

it has tons of other benefits too, i found out about it from other ex smokers as well

u/Intereo · 2 pointsr/SaltLakeCity

Buy a 10lb bag of food grade diatomaceous earth and a pest pistol. Fill the pest pistol with diatomaceous earth and dust all of your carpets and put a large amount around entrances, cracks, along baseboards and windows.

If you don't have pets or small children you can use boric acid around entrances and windows instead of diatomaceous earth abecause it works a little better.

u/ChinaskiBlur · 2 pointsr/whatsthisbug

Use this Diatomaceous Earth to get them gone.

It non-toxic and completely safe unless you have an exoskeleton.

u/RedShirtDecoy · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

It is basically ground up fossils of Diatoms. Or fossilized algae.

The reason it works is because when its ground up, even though it feels super fine/silky to us, it is made of super small crystals. When bugs walk through the DE it creates a ton of small, microscopic, cuts all over the bugs body that will dehydrate them.

So if you put it around your place most bugs will avoid it and as such will avoid getting into your house/apartment but for those who do make it inside it will cause them to die of dehydration.

This explains it better than I can

You can buy a 10lb bag of the stuff at any local hardware place but I bought mine from Amazon.. I bought a bag from them 5 years ago and I still have half a bag left, so its super cheap in the long run.

u/supershinythings · 2 pointsr/plantclinic

Yes. If you buy it from the 'right' place it's dirt cheap, pardon the pun. Always look for 'food grade' as if it's accidentally ingested (say, it gets on a tomato) there's no pesticide or other foreign stuff to cause problems.

e.g.

https://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY

I found a 4 lb bag at OSH for maybe $14, but that was a year ago and OSH is out of business. You will very likely find a much better deal online then in specialty stores which will mark it up like it's gold.

If it gets wet it must be reapplied, as the weight of the water will sink it into the soil where it will disappear and may even wash out invisibly. So I apply it AFTER a watering. Once you've murdered the gnats you can be a bit less vigilant, but still keep a dusting about. It's a fine powder so if you do it right you need very very little.

u/vokebot · 2 pointsr/Austin

I'm pretty sure it comes in different grades. There is food grade DE that you can buy.

u/cutekick · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I had bed bugs last year (which was extra confusing since I had not traveled in over a year and have no idea how I got them) so I might be able to help you out.

First, lets start with a bit about bed bugs. They are hardly little buggers that can live for up to a year without food. This makes it hard for things like poisons to work, they have to be reapplied every few months to make sure they stay gone for a year. They like to stay in dark spaces during the day and this can be anywhere near the bed, not just in the bed. This means that they can be under it, behind the night stand, in the nearby closet, a lot of places which causes things like mattress protectors to not always work. Which means I cannot recommend a brand for one since I didn't go that route.

The most common option is poisons. You just have to keep up and spray them regularly or schedule something with an exterminator throughout the year to get them good and gone. Personally, I don't like poisons. I avoid them at all costs. I don't want anything intentionally poisonous around me or my cats.

The second option and this is what I used, is Diatomaceous Earth. Linked is the stuff I bought when I had the problem. This stuff is magic. It isn't poisonous, completely pet safe, you can actually eat it (some people say it has health benefits). It works in an interesting way. Diatomaceous earth has a texture similar to baking soda but if you looked at under a microscope it would look like a bunch of pieces of broken glass. This tiny broken glass texture does not affect us, but it does affect insects. This stuff gives them tiny little cuts and because they exoskeletons this means they cannot heal. So all those tiny little cuts end up killing them.

It does wonders on bed bugs. I took my mattress out of my bed room, stripped it, and vacuumed both sides. I vacuumed everything I could in my bed room, moved my bed frame out of the way to make sure I could fully vacuum under there. I tossed all the bedding in the wash. I then dusted the mattress on both sides with the diatomaceous earth before putting the sheets back on. I don't have a box spring but I would dust that too if you have one. I dusted the part of my bed under my mattress and I dusted under the bed frame. I also put a perimeter of the stuff around the bed so that anything hiding elsewhere in the room had to crawl through it to get to me. Bed bugs tend to climb up your bed legs so make sure there is a good bit around each leg of the bed frame. You might still get bites for a day or two after this but not many. Since the diatomaceous earth doesn't outright kill them it can take a few days for them to die.

Beyond that, if you want to get them gone good and fast I suggest staying up really late one night. Bed bugs tend to come out around 2-3 AM. Leave the bed room dark and then when it is late, turn on the light. You should be able to see them going back to their hiding spots. Dusting those areas with diatomaceous earth will help get rid of them faster.

I have carpet in my bedroom and within a few days the diatomaceous earth perimeter was hard to notice. It was still there but I couldn't really see it. I ended up vacuuming it up and putting a new one down about once a month for 6 months. This was longer than I needed but I figured better safe than sorry. Having some white powder on my floor wasn't really an issue for me.

Since it isn't a poison they will be coming to try and bite you at night and being harmed by the diatomaceous earth. Poison on the other hand kills the immediate insect outright and then the smell keeps any others that are in hiding away. This means in you don't need to keep the diatomaceous earth around for that long. I kept it up for 6 months mostly because it had become a kind of habit. (It also works on spiders and it was giant house spider season so that was also a factor for me.) How long exactly you would want to leave it around depends on the infestation. I would leave it there for at least a month after the bites have fully stopped. It has now been over a year since I had the horrible little things and they have not come back.

Hopefully this helps! Sorry it is so long and doesn't actually answer the question you asked. Let me know if you have any questions.

u/dWoell · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

This'll kill them. You might not need that much so shop around but its safe for humans (just dont huff it) and it kills bugs by damaging their exoskeleton.

u/DeutschPantherV · 2 pointsr/Bonsai

I finally found the soil section of the wiki, so I have a few more questions, if you don't mind.

  1. By diatomaceous earth do you mean this? Is diatomaceous earth necessary, as it seems a bit pricy, granted I don't know how far it will go.
  2. I have read that cat litter can be a good soil, what exactly would it replace in your mixture and are there any brands in the USA that you might recommend?
  3. All the pine bark I am finding online is the shredded stuff. Is that what you are referring to, or something else?

After moving to a new area, our indoor cat started getting fleas. Many hours of research later and I found that Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth would get rid of them. Is this basically what you have? Seems to be a lot of benefits from people actually ingesting this stuff.

Buy this shit. I've had to deal with them twice. This stuff is like glass to them and it works real well where you can't burn them to death. Let it sit for a few days, then vacuum it up. Continue until you're satisfied their gone.

I'd suggest puttong throughout the area you have your couch as well. To make sure thy don't spread further into your abode.

It won't hurt you to lay on, but you can always put a sheet or something over the couh while you sleep if you don't want to lay in the powder.

u/Jessie_James · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Easy. Buy a bag of this stuff and the little yellow puffer thing linked.

Puff it all around, as much as you can stand. In a few weeks they will be 99% gone. Stuff is amazing.

I had a major daddy longlegs infestation in my utility room, and they got into all the neighboring rooms. Drove me nuts. Every day I'd find 5-10 more full grown all over.

Puffed that stuff everywhere, waited 2 weeks and did it again. Now I see maybe 1 a week, mostly little ones - zero adults.

It's food grade, non-toxic, and you can just vacuum it up.

Just don't breath too much while you do it - it's dusty (obviously).

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. It's kind of messy, but its a non toxic way to get rid of roaches, and other pests like ants and fleas.

Have you tried DE? If you use the food grade it's totally nontoxic but kills pretty much every living bug known to man, including fleas. You can put it right on the pets.

u/mjolnir76 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Diatomaceous Earth - spread around the perimeter of your house and along baseboards inside where you’ve seen them.

Tempo SC Ultra - spray trails in the yard or around the perimeter

Terro Bait Traps - place along trails inside the house, in cupboards/cabinets, expect this to get worse before it gets better (i.e. tons of ants come over a couple of days and then they die off)

If you have a hard time getting out of the lease, then you can use this stuff to save you.

u/schuldig · 1 pointr/whatisthisthing

Yup it's a Cockroach and one of the nasty types as well. Give your house a deep clean, go get some Advion Gel, and put some diatomaceous earth (food grade) in the back of your cupboards.

u/Bloodfoe · 1 pointr/Austin

This will last you forever.

I put it in one of those smaller Simply Orange juice bottles. I drilled some holes in the cap so you can just squeeze it a bit and it shoots out.

If I'm not mistaken, it's safe for mammals, but anything with an exoskeleton will get ripped to shreds by it, and also dehydrate from the microscopically sharp nature of the powder scratching the exoskeleton and removing the integrity of whatever levels of it that keep the moisture in.

parasites !!! i guarantee your problem is roots from digestive parasites...if you can i recommend.. buying food grade
diatemaceous earth ..check out the link for a random testimonial(://curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=923446) you can buy it on amazon...... http://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY take a half tablespoon(gradually move up to 3 tablespoons) first few days befored bed followed by a probiotic immediately in the morning then first food should be soft fruits then stay away from common allergens such as gluten etc.....try this for 4 weeks then stop for 2 weeks and only do probiotics 3 times per day ...continuing with your easy to digest diet...then if problems still persist go back to the same protocol with the diatemaceous earth for 2 months then go on probiotics until things normalize...if this still doesn't work ...then i reccomend fasting on water and juice and parasite cleanse with diatamecous eather for minimum of ten days followed by 2 week easy to digest vegan diet..then probiotics 3 times per day...etc...

your questions...

my energy levels come and go...if i get light headed i will take deep breaths, i am at home mostly with my wife and daughter and prefer to be alone most of the time while fasting , but i do spend time with them ..i even have been cooking for them when i have extra energy..mental state is fine ..i have been distracting myself with tv mostly even though i should be reading and meditaing more..not much physical pain...wife and daugher are aware of my fast ...and i dont talk about it openly ...i work from home so...i havent been going out much....its better to keep it to yourself, most people wont understand and will tell you its unhealthy..unless you know someone else can benefit from your knowledge keep it to yourself...i have been down the road of telling people about it and they just dont care and think its stupid to not eat...

bottom line is fasting is a great tool for completly repairing digetion and killing parasites and longer is better when it comes to this...however if you are studying and not able to relax..it can be very stressful...i would reccomend a parasiste cleanse and clean diet first...or squeeze in a ten day juice fast/ parasite cleanse and go from there.

Diatomaceous Earth might help some if you sprinkle it all over the area. Otherwise, do you have a garage or something you could keep it in to just go out with your regular trash?

u/funknjam · 1 pointr/amazone

Holy crap - that second review.....

> I had one of the worst cock roach infestations that I had ever seen in my life. It was so bad that I could see them at night crawling on the inside of the TV screen, I had to throw out 2 coffee pots because they were breeding inside parts I couldn't even get to in order to clean along with a wooden knife block in the kitchen. I had to throw out an alarm clock because their were dead roaches covering the LED numbers so that you couldn't make out what time it was.

There's normal diatomaceous earth that you can get at your local hardware store in the pest control section, and then there's food grade that you can get which is safe to eat, use around pets, etc.

With regard to the flea problem, I went through a really bad summer several years back. I have two indoor boxers and I use flea preventatives on them. At the time, both of my neighbors had dogs that spent a lot of time outdoors and I know for a fact that one of them wasn't using flea prevention.

Do you have pets? If so, you may want to talk to your vet about the medications you are currently using for prevention. While Frontline worked great the first few years with my dogs, it suddenly became almost worthless. My vet and the employees at Petco confirmed hearing similar complaints, and it seems that the fleas have built up an immunity to Frontline, Advantix, etc... If you need any additional info on what I've used since, let me know.

The rest of my advice is for treating your home and property without traditional pesticides. If you're all for them, I suspect you can use them with success. If not, I completely eradicated the flea infestation (along with a switch in my dogs' medication) within a few weeks as follows:

I bought several flea traps and placed them all over my house. Since I have dogs, I placed them in their common areas which included near their crate, in the living room, and my bedroom where they sleep. Overnight, they will flock to the traps. You can also make them yourself, but I never tried. If you're interested, Google "DIY Flea Trap".

Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is your best friend. Use it outdoors AND indoors. Inside, use it on carpets, rugs, your pets bedding, etc... It is completely safe after application, but you should use a painter's mask while applying as it may irritate your throat and lungs. Make sure you use food-grade DE, not the stuff for pools.

Vacuum daily and make sure you have vacuumed areas with the DE so it stays inside your vacuum's filter and keeps working on any fleas trapped inside. Reapply the DE at least a few times a week in heavily vacuumed areas, and pay extra attention to the areas you find to be most infested.

Last, use beneficial nematodes in your yard. If you decide to use traditional pesticides, don't waste your money on these as the pesticides will kill them.

Good luck!

I looked it up, do you mean this stuff? Diatomaceous Earth

If so, I'll order some right now. I just want to get rid of these ants lol

u/mesquitoes · 1 pointr/Asthma

It's definitely a bit weird, but what worked for me was supplementing with food grade diatomaceous earth. It works miracles for clearing up acne and excess lung mucous, pretty much overnight. Here's a link to the stuff on Amazon

u/Flamingpig · 1 pointr/sanantonio

Get this

http://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY

Then put it in this

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SW52CE/

Then puff it around the perimiter of your house/apt making sure to get it in all the nooks and crannies. Then go outside and dust your lawn and other areas. The stuff will not work immediately but you will notice that bugs will just stop showing up. Only thing you have to remember is that you need to keep up the spreading to keep he bugs out. So after a rain you need to dust again. After you vacuum, dust again. After a couple of weeks, dust again.

But don't worry this stuff is edible so it wont hurt you or pets.

Mosquitos you need these.

I've heard that Diatomaceous Earth works amazingly well for getting rid of pests. I would give that a shot first.

u/levisimons · 1 pointr/LosAngeles

While you're waiting to move out or justice I would suggest bagging any infested materials with a heavy coating of this: https://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 . It works by drying out the bedbugs through their shells. It's pretty harmless for larger animals.

u/retix · 1 pointr/AskVet

I don't know why you were down voted. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a well known method for eliminating fleas and other insects. I would (personally) avoid actually putting it on the pets, but can be used to treat carpets and bedding. However, you do want to clean it up by thoroughly vacuuming.

IMPORTANT NOTE: make sure you purchase food grade DE! It is safe for human & pet consumption and is actually different from Pool grade DE! You can get 10 lbs from Amazon for $20 (http://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-10/dp/B00025H2PY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top/178-9385678-3291707)

Also, keep in mind that some fleas have a 3-4 month life cycle, so you need to keep up on cleaning and treatments for a while. Go see your vet to get some capstar and get some Revolution or Frontline for monthly treatments until the fleas are gone.

You cAn also check for fleas in your carpets using a water trap (http://wikihow.com/Make-a-Flea-Trap).

u/feelingofmalaise · 1 pointr/SushiAbomination

This is the one I bought recently: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00025H2PY/

I buy in bulk because I also use it around my yard as pest control - it's basically microscopic shards of glass and this cuts up a bugs exoskeleton when it crawls over it. Anyway, you can use any food grade diatomaceous earth though. I buy whatever brand is cheap as long as reviews are good. Food grade, not pool grade because that's poison. I just mix 1 tbsp in a glass of water and down it (you might want to start with 1tsp and work up to avoid GI issues). Tastes like chalk.

If you're the type of person who can't handle drinking chalk water, then you can buy silica tablets instead. I used to take the NOW brand but switched to DE because it's a lot more cost effective.

u/spiceydog · 0 pointsr/dogs

Have you looked into DE (diatomaceous earth)? I haven't had to try it but I've read that this is probably the most benign product for deterring insects that would work well for dogs where chemical application is unsafe for their health.

For kicks, I did a search on the highest reviewed food grade DE on Amazon, and the reviews are pretty clear that it DOES prevent tick bites, but repeat application is necessary with this stuff. $22 for 10 lbs is a pretty good deal too. Hope this helps.

u/threedogcircus · -1 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

YTA.

That is not your dog and you cannot give it medication.

Flea and tick medication is a neurotoxin! It works by damaging the central nervous system of the bugs. IT CAN ALSO DAMAGE THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM OF THE DOG!!!! Many, many dogs are injured and killed by these medications. These are dangerous chemicals and you shouldn't give them AT ALL led alone without the animal's owner's permission.

Look at other options like Wondercide (https://www.wondercide.com/pets/dogs/flea-treatment-for-dogs) or diatomaceous earth (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00025H2PY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6BdXCb10VZMTW)!

This will fix it right up. Sprinkle it around the unit. You could probably get your LL to pay for it if you asked.

Sounds like root aphids, if this is the case i'm sorry for your loss. You need to kill your plants and sterilize everything and start over. I'm sorry. Fungus gnats don't penetrate the soil in the manner that root aphids do. Fungus gnats have a life cycle that involves larval (eating your roots), and then flying above your plats matting and then laying eggs. It is really easy to solve Fungus gnats as you can just get some Diatomaceos earth (has to be food grade) mix it with an inch or two of soil and then place on the top of the existing soil, this will interrupt the life cycle and save your plants ( if it is fungus gnats). Root aphids will spread and can not be defeated and can even trigger them selves to grow wings to spread.

EDIT: I just noticed black spots on your plant, from what I read this is a tel tale sign of spider mites. I Don't know man I want to see the bugs. Show me a pick of the bugs.
