Using a Plugable USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter (ASIX AX88179 chipset same as the UGREEN), and have had the "Console warm to the touch when connected to ethernet in Sleep Mode" issue since the 5.0 patch. This did not happen prior to that patch. My understanding is that the change in 5.0 that caused this is that the Switch remains connected all the time while in sleep mode, instead of periodically waking for software update checks.

Unplugging the far end ethernet jack and leaving the ethernet adapter connected to the console will correct the issue, and the console will not be warm to the touch in this state. Which seems to suggest the issue is indeed related to the constant connection and update checks, and not the usb adapter itself being powered on while in sleep.

I do not have the other issue OP mentioned, my network switch still shows connected in sleep mode when plugged in, which is why issue #1 is present due to the constant connectivity.
I would like to see the port actually make use of its USB 3.0 hardware capabilities, but this is very minor, and only mildly useful for people with 500Mbps+ internet, and won't help gameplay much if at all, just downloads.

Please note that the official Nintendo Switch LAN uses the ASIX AX88179 chipset, which is basically the best one for the Switch to use and the one you should recommend. I would completely ignore the first LAN adapter you linked to, and primarily suggest the second one you linked to, or this one which is a few cents cheaper.

Having played a lot of Splatoon I would recommend getting an Ethernet adapter. The one I liked below works like a charm.

Get this one instead. It's USB 3.0, caps out at 100 Mbps, and is on the list of USB 3.0 adapters that work. I have two different ones unfortunately, and this is the one that works.

As long as it's a Gigabit adapter, they're honestly all the same speed. I bought the Plugable because it was recommended by lots of others, has great reviews for Switch use, it's affordable, AND it's USB 3.0 compatible. Works perfectly btw, perfect size for the side plate.

The Hori/Nintendo one is more expensive (more than double the price) and doesn't have 3.0 capabilities. Now that doesn't matter right now, but people believe that the Switch console is also 3.0 capable, they just haven't provided an update to "activate" it. If they ever do, and there's any speed increase to be seen, you won't get it with a 2.0 adapter like the Hori/Nintendo.

You need a LAN adapter that has the AX88179 chipset, or it won't work. It's not rare or anything, but there are different ones, so check before you buy.

The Plugable one is a popular buy for a good price ($15) and a reliable brand.

These all work. Note that the Switch USB port is capable of USB 3.0 but a software patch is required which Nintendo hasn’t pushed yet, so USB 2.0 is what the Switch is currently pushing. Up to you if you want to pay a few extra bucks for the 3.0 adapter anyways.

USB 3.0 devices work on USB 2.0 ports no problem. What matters here is what drivers are built in on the system, so if a USB 3.0 LAN adapter has the right chipset, it'll work (but operate at USB 2 speeds). I use this USB 2.0 adapter on my Wii U, and this 3.0 adapter on my Switch. The Switch supports both chipsets to allow compatibility with the older official adapter, but the Wii U doesn't support the newer gigabit adapter's chipset.

The Switch only supports LAN adapters that use a particular chipset. I have an Acer branded one which isn't recognized on the Switch, but one by Trendnet which is. I believe there's a list of supported adapters somewhere but I'm on mobile and lazy.

Edit: Adapters that use either the AX88772 (widely used, but slower than 802.11ac WiFi) or AX88179 (less common, but true gigabit speed) chipsets should work. According to the product page of this Plugable adapter, it should be compatible. Is this the one you bought?

Never seen a Surface like device with an Ethernet port. I doubt one exists. They are mobile devices so an Ethernet port is counter to it's primary function.

Umm to be honest your probably fine with the one you have. The reason I recommended the one there is because I have the 100MBPS UGREEN one and it works great and have had no issues. Even things as far as having the Ethernet cable stay securely into the adapter on these is nice which I have had one other where that was an issue. But yeah I imagine the Nintendo ones are great so you should be good with that!

I have seen a lot of people use USB adapters for Lenovo Tinys before, I actually got THIS adapter myself for my M83p Tiny. Haven't tried it yet though. I checked and it's supposed to be compatible with ESXi, so idk about Windows compatibility.

IPFire lets you have separate networks for wired, wireless, and DMZ networks. I use one of these and one of these, although almost any USB to Ethernet adapter will work. There doesn't seem to be any difference in throughput between the 100Mb and the Gigabit models.

The up time is excellent. The only downtime that I have has is when I update to the latest version of IPFire.

I have used OpenWRT before, and would have used it if it had been available when I set up my firewall. I find IPFire to be a more professional piece of software, with a lot more options on how to set up, filter, and monitor the network. OpenWRT is a more bare bones. Because of that, I am wondering if OpenWRT might be a little faster. One day I need to test that.

I think most of your questions depend on how you plan to use your Switch. For me, 99.9% of the time I use it in handheld mode, so accessories important for my usage are different than someone who primarily uses it in docked mode.

Technically yes but the best ones to get are the USB 3.0 Adapters. If you look on the inside of your Switch Dock you will notice one of the two USB Ports is Blue. The blue indicates USB 3.0. Link to the adapter. It explains why it's better in the video. The TL;DW is the official Nintendo adapter is USB 2.0 and this is USB 3.0 so the transfer speeds are just inherently faster. Plus it's like half the price of the official one.

I bought this specific ethernet adapter and this USB-C cable and it works great for me if that helps. I couldn't figure out why I was so much better at Splatoon 2 on handheld but terrible docked, so I bought the ethernet adapter to get the best connection in the meantime since I was playing more docked. Turns out it was ultimately TV input lag. New TV fixed that and I don't use the ethernet adapter often now, but it's nice to have an extra for the PC.

This is from the speediest-cli package, and that's what I'm using to feed cacti to make graphs. My primary usage of the Pi is for some simple network monitoring stuff with retro pie on occasion.

I plugged the adapter in, rebooted the pi, and It Just Worked. No configuration necessary. Worked right out of the box.

Only thing I noticed was increased memory usage, but that's probably because it's coming across the USB bus.

I have a glass screen protector and I opted for a HORIpad gamepad since it was only $17.50 as opposed to paying 70 bucks for a pro controller. One day I might pick one up but for now my budget is telling me no. My concern is that I bought Breath of the Wild with the expansion and I'll have to download the expansion to install it. I'd suggest getting an Acer Aspire V7-482PG.

It has an i5-4200U, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Nvidia GT 750M graphics, and a beautiful 14" 1920x1080 IPS touch display. Only thing it doesn't have that you want is an ethernet port, but you can get a USB to RJ-45 Adapter easily enough.

It does only weigh 4.4lbs and can get up to 8 hours of battery life under the right conditions (brightness way down, wifi off, light use, etc.).

It would easily be able to play your light games at high frame rates and survive the day at school.

I still play vs. people who lag, but my connection is a lot better.

The problem must be with your PC, since everything else works and because it happens both on wifi and Ethernet. Since this is just a lab I'd use 2 vmkernel management interfaces. One on the virtual switch with no physical uplinks (i.e. routed through pfSense for normal access) and one on a USB to ethernet adapter in case you mess up pfSense and need to get into the console to fix it. You can technically do it without the USB adapter but it'd be a lot of work to fix things if you messed pfSense up in such a scenario.

 

Another option entirely would be to get a managed L2 switch with VLAN support like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K4DS5KU and just use VLANs out of pfSense and map them to untagged physical ports. You'd have way more physical ports this way and they'd still be separated by pfSense policy.

I delete WiFi setting and fully shutdown and unplug all the cables and power cores then leave it rest for 5 minutes, plug everything back except LAN Network Adapter turn it on then plug LAN Network Adapter bump got same slow speed again.

I think the problems are from the dock hardware or Switch's OS that you can't do anything with them.

I recommend this adapter which works with a USB port and works on XP.

Also, you should really install Unofficial SP4 so that you'll be secure. USP4 gets new security updates from Microsoft until April 2019. People say XP is insecure, but they just need to use this and then it's secure :)

Are you using any Unofficial Accessory's? Only thing that's not Official that im using is my Lan Adapter but it has the same chipset as the official one. Also let me know if it happens to you again ill do the same :P Just waiting for it to happen again is driving my OCD Crazy. I also have Rocket League but I Haven't been playing it much so I don't think its that. Ive seen Reports that people are getting this error when they use unofficial controllers in 5.0.0 but im not using a unofficial controller.

I should say: I’ve noticed all these same problems when docked with the LAN adapter connected. Undocked, but using a USB-C OTG adapter in handheld mode works with the LAN adapter. So strange.

You can get something like this cable, this adapter, this hub, or anything else that looks similar. They all do the same thing so it doesn't really matter which. Any of them can connect to the bottom of the Switch to let you plug USB stuff in. Switch has the same kind of port (it's called USB-C) as the recent Macbooks so a lot of these things say they're for Macbook but they work with Switch too.

Only some USB LAN adapters work with Switch. Here's a few examples: HORI, Plugable, Cable Matters, AmazonBasics. Any of these work the same so get whichever one you can. They all work with the dock too.

If you don't care about using a LAN adapter with your dock at all, you could also get this LAN adapter instead which plugs directly into the Switch without needing another adapter, but you cannot use it when the Switch is docked.

That would most likely be triggered from having bad internet (on ur end) to test your speed go into settings> internet> test connection. The higher speed the better, but if you have lower then 7 down and 7 up It would probably mean this is happening on your end.
There's a couple different fixes.

1. If your a little bit tech savvy go into your routers settings and enable QoS with your switch
   
   
2. The easiest fix by far is using Ethernet only certain adapters work, here's the one I'm using
   
   
3. Switch internet service providers or upgrade to higher speed (if possible)

I read the reviews and they say it does work? it even says compatible with switch in the items title. Maybe im seeing a different one? This one is the first one on the page for me.

USB 3.0 is supported on the port on the back of the dock and will be faster than a 2.0 adapter. There are some YouTube videos comparing 2.0 adapters including the official Nintendo switch adapter and they were way out preformed by a 3.0 adapter he tried.

Yes the Wii LAN adapter would work, but it's slow in comparison to others you can buy on amazon. Even the official one they sell only uses USB 2.0 while the inner ports are compatible with USB 3.0, so something like this one (which is the same one I have) actually works faster than the official ethernet adapter.

I just recently purchased my new switch! My switch can connect to my Wifi just fine, however, using the following LAN Adapter(link) which should work according to multiple users and the company themselves, my switch is unable to connect to the internet. I know the wired connection works fine because it's the same wired connection I use for my PS4 (I'm just switching back and forth between consoles).

I have already tried the basics, which include rebooting the console, unplugging the cables, rebooting the router/modem, resetting the settings to default when on the wired connection screen. I believe it has something to do with the Adapter, and I noticed the adapter itself has a MAC address. Must I go into my router's settings and manually add the MAC address of the Switch itself and Adapter for it to work? If so what IP should I give it(Within the set IP range that the router suggests?).

So don't worry your safe buying the UGREEN one, just keep in mind that for some reasons there a bunch of people that have better speed on wifi than over LAN its just a weird thing on some ISP

For LAN-adapters, I currently have the AmazonBasics one, but I would like one that is long enough so the USB-side fits inside the dock cover, and the ethernet side can extend past it. The AmazonBasics one is too short, and as such, I haven't been using a cover lately, which I'd like to remedy. Could anyone recommend one in the $10-15 range? Would this one, recommended by the guides at the top be long enough?

(for the record, I have someone I'm giving my AmazonBasics one to for something non-Switch related)

You need an Ethernet Switch, as well as either a Thunderbolt-Ethernet or USB-Ethernet adapter for your laptop.

It's probably safe to assume any USB-ethernet adapter will work for Switch yes? If so, I was going to add this to my cart right now.

Edit: it says it's not compatible with Wii... that's weird. I'd hope it'd be compatible with Switch?
