Look for camera's with ONVIF.

Maybe something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Security-Ethernet-Surveillance-Waterproof-Infrared/dp/B07KSWNDXV/

Will allow local control if/when you want, plus can be tied into various cloud services. Even do both at the same time.

People get strangely territorial about parking spots. Buy a security camera and point it straight at that house. Make it obvious it's intended just for them. For some reason that drives people nuts too.

So, your cat is going to be fine. But to ease YOUR anxiety, get some cheap webcams so you can check in and feel better that your cat is fine. I use these:

https://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-Wireless-Security-Camera-Cameras/dp/B07FCJNX46/

They will send alerts to your phone when they see movement so you can get proactive alerts every so often that your cat is absolutely okay.

Some questions: How far away from you balcony is the area to be monitored? What level of detail do you want to be able to see? It doesn't sound too far (less than 50 feet) and you don't need to see faces. If that's correct, you can get a bullet camera with on-board storage. Something with motion detection will save you a lot of time searching unless there's a lot of movement in the area. I'll also assume you'll want to check the video from your computer. I'm not a fan of wireless cameras (I prefer the reliability of wired) but it sounds like it may be the easiest solution for you. Something like the camera in the link may work well. tps://smile.amazon.com/Reolink-Wireless-4-Megapixel-2560x1440-RLC-410WS/dp/B019MMABCI/ref=sr_1_13?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1482075913&sr=1-13&keywords=bullet+camera+SD+card&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_three_browse-bin%3A6012218011

You don't need anything fancy. A cheaper analog camera plugged into a Composite-to-HDMI or Composite-toVGA adapter plugged into a monitor will give you want you want for < $100, monitor not included.

BUT - I think you will be happier, long-term, if you do keep a few days' worth of video, just in case there's an issue about something. Sometimes being able to prove something didn't happen is as important as proving what did happen. (e.g., the person who's supposed to be watching the door/monitor goes away for 5 mins to use the toilet. wouldn't it be nice to have a record of what, if anything, happened during those 5 mins?)

But, for what you're asking for:

Camera https://www.amazon.com/NYXCAM-Security-Surveillance-Weatherproof-Monitoring/dp/B078H83RHV/

Power supply https://www.amazon.com/ABLEGRID-Supply-Adapter-Security-Camera/dp/B015PWVUSS/

Hybrid power/video cable https://www.amazon.com/Swann-100ft-Surveillance-Security-Cameras/dp/B0104X85X6/

Or, use CAT 5 and a set of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCGZ3H5/

BNC/RCA adapter: https://www.amazon.com/VCE-5-PACK-Plated-Female-Adapter/dp/B01N20F61M/

and you should be able to plug into a TV/monitor that accepts composite video (typically a single yellow RCA plug/jack) - or if you want to output to HDMI, one of these https://www.amazon.com/GANA-Composite-Converter-Adapter-Supporting/dp/B01L8GG6PW/ + a USB power source.

I haven't personally used those products, I've gone down the IP camera rabbit hole; but if you wanted to do something simple & cheap for < $100, that's how I'd do it.

u/brzcory · 3 pointsr/CCW

IP cameras (digital video instead of old blurry-ass CCTV) can be had for ~$40 a pop. They just wire into your router, and are networked to a PC for recording.

Be aware though: you gotta set the passwords and keep up on your internet security with them. I've got mine on their own wired network that's completely detached from the internet (it's easier to do than it sounds, since mine are all hardwired anyway with POE, they all run to a switch which plugs into a PC that's just plugging away in the attic).

u/MaximumDoughnut · 3 pointsr/Edmonton

I had Wyze cameras and had 3D printed outdoor housings but the quality wasn't great at night after our last run in.

Went Ubiquiti. Three G3-FLEX cameras (four tonight) and ran some CAT6 with a powerline adapter for the camera you see above. I'm runing the UniFi Video software on an old Mac mini with a 5TB USB HD but I'm strongly considering one of their CloudKey Gen 2+ to dedicate specific hardware for the cameras/network.

The interface is fantastic, the camera quality is fantastic (they also offer a 4K camera though $$$), and security hardened. I like the idea of them being wired to take that busy constant video traffic off of wifi.

We use a couple different brands of IP cameras and Blue Iris Software connected to a PC in my home office.I have a very similar setup at my business. We have several different cameras like these Amcrest indoor cameras and outdoor cameras as well as this doorbell camera. I can use the Blue Iris mobile app on my iPhone or iPad and see all the cameras at my business or home.

The reason I really like this setup is because 1) I don't want my video stored in the cloud and 2) I don't want to have to pay a monthly fee for the service. These videos are only stored on the local computers and although I know they may not be 100% secure I feel much better knowing they're not uploaded to some cloud that's always a target for hackers.

u/thejamabides · 2 pointsr/homedefense

I use these for Ethernet to my far away from the router cameras:

They work amazingly.

I use this for the camera:

Foscam HD 1080P Outdoor WiFi Security Camera – Weatherproof IP66 Bullet / 2.1MP IP Wireless Surveillance Camera System with iOS/Android App, Night Vision up to 65ft, and More (FI9900P) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011US2ADK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ktP5Ab94GF4PK

And I use blue Iris for local recording/monitoring and I use Dropbox to store 30 days of 1 second resolution video (just record to the shared dropbox folder)

This is the kind of image I get at night (camera is mounted to my roof soffet and cables go to my attic to an extension cable with a splitter for the camera and the Ethernet adapter)

I think spending that much for extra "protection" just isn't worth it, the cam is $20, and everything you are talking about would run you $200+.

For that amount of cash, might as well get a dedicated security cam, and those are actually meant for security situations, unlike the Wyze cam, which just aren't up to the job.

If you still want to use Wyze, then mount it inside, and point it outside, and get IR flood lights.

If you still don't want to go that route, you can try other cams, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Surveillance-Waterproof-Security-Detection/dp/B07789DM4R/ at least it is rated to be weatherproof, and for outdoors use.

u/Reck_it_Rob · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

As others have mentioned, cameras. More specifically, since you're parked in front of the house, just pick up some decent all weather cameras for $40-60 a piece and a stand alone hard drive as well so you can store 2-30 days worth of video feed. Also, Interface is a free service that allows you to network everything together.

Thanks Wolfcry0, I came here to say this. I also run sv3c and love that camera. It would be so great if it supported audio also, which it does not. It's a great camera though for the price! Good night vision, tons of options.

On this model, make sure to go into Configuration -> Network -> P2P and turn OFF the P2P option. Its a bit sketchy how it connects out with this feature. Once that is off, it does not phone home or make any outbound connections other than NTP (clock) which I set to my own NTP server

u/bphilly_cheesesteak · 1 pointr/homeautomation

We use 8 of these with Blue Iris recording at 720p 25-30fps, then 2 of these recording at 1080p 30fps (during the day and 10fps at night). . I use the Blue Iris plugin for HomeSeer to monitor whether a camera has dropped offline or something similar like that. You can also set it to send you notifications based on motion/etc (either through Blue Iris itself or through HomeSeer). We also use DoorBird for our doorbell that allows us to get push notifications and talk to the person at the door but also have the (720p) RTSP stream live to Blue Iris as well.

The PC running Blue Iris is this. Somehow the i5 inside works perfectly with only medium-high CPU-usage, even with 10 total HD cameras.

You can try the low cost option first, but not sure what your range needs to be, it may be cheaper to upgrade to low lux cameras instead of installing a lot of expensive IR spots.

I recommend this Jennov POE camera. I bought one to replace a $120 Hikvision that looks almost exactly the same. The picture quality is very good. I will be buying more when I find time to wire a couple more up. $36.90-$40

Hikvision Bullet:

If you got to have indoor WIFI then something like this Hikvisiion will do all right, but remember WIFI can be flakey at times so you may experience some periodic drop in the stream/recording:
https://www.amazon.com/Hikvision-DS-2CD2442FWD-IW-Indoor-Wireless-Camera/dp/B01N2YFTNX

One MAJOR thing to be aware of, with any security camera system, make sure you set up the cameras on a separate VLAN and/or separate physical LAN from your other home network and have firewall rules in place to deny that VLAN and separate physical LAN from communicating to the outside and do not let any external device access it from the outside. If you need access remotely to the cameras, setup a VPN server to have secure access into that camera network. Pretty much all of these cameras come from China so, you want to protect yourself not just from unwanted random outside snooping but also from the cameras calling home in the event there's hidden foreign government backdoors/spyware.

Hi,

As dstrokes and others commented, you are better off sticking with Hikvision or Dahua which are the cheaper of the good quality brands.

If you are not comfortable with ordering off Amazon.ca, look for local dealers with a good reputation. I am sure Hikvision have local partners who will offer the genuine article, with product support and a warranty, albeit at a higher price. I have done both in the UK where I live, ordered off AliExpress at a 50% savings vs. UK prices, and ordered from a local dealer at a 10-20% premium after their discounts.

If a seller uses language such as 'Multi-language', its probably a Chinese version hacked by them to enable English. If you attempt to upgrade the firmware of such a camera, it may work with the camera reverting to its original Chinese language, or get bricked.

My advice: don't buy a hacked Chinese non-International model if you are sure you want to upgrade the firmware somewhere down the line. Hikvision firmware is pretty decent - I haven't updated either of my cameras' firmware because there are no bugs in it (as far as I care) nor do I upgrade for the sake of upgrading.

Talking about the quality of my Chinese hacked version vs the genuine International model, both work well, have never given me trouble (over 1-2 years of use), are exposed to the elements, haven't skipped a beat. I would happily buy Hikvision again!

Now about your needs: low price and a 100 feet range dont go hand in hand. If you look at the Hikvision camera range, the ones with EXIR LEDs are brighter and have more range than the ones with standard ring-type LEDs. Starting from the cheapest DS-2CD2332-I (160CAD) to the more expensive DS-2CD2T32-I3/-I5/-I8 models with 30,50,and 80 Metres claimed IR range 210CAD.

I say go with the 2332-I because the other one may be overkill, both can take up to -30 deg C as well. I am sure your parents will not note the difference in image quality (if any)! The mini-turret is also more discreet.

If its an open area with no walls to reflect the IR light from the camera, you should consider external IR lamps. They make a huge difference in lighting up the scene.

If your requirement is to not use cheap chinese junk electronics, you've got to give up most of everything on the planet. But I completely agree with you that the price of a POE RPi hat should have been marginal at best, considering you can buy complete POE camera's for 30 bucks.

u/tolitius · 1 pointr/videosurveillance

thank you for the list

I am still researching DORI and differences between cameras, but from what I gathered so far here is what I need:

  • blue iris $70 (with a phone app)
  • pc (since it only supports windows) likely i7-6700 something like this
  • PoE switch: something like this
  • router, I have an old lynksys with dd-wrt which should do it
  • several very long ethernet cables with some couplers
  • most likely also a UPS
  • ONVIF, PoE cameras

the last bit I am still looking at. I am not ready to spend several hundred dollars per camera (one of your examples is Dahua 2MP Starlight which seems to be super expensive). While I understand it might be much better than the rest, I'd like to see if I can be in a $50 to $100 dollar range per camera. Is there any such cameras you can recommend?

I can see some (ONVIF, PoE): Hikvision 4MP, ONWOTE 5MP, ONWOTE, 4X Optical Zoom Autofocus, Amcrest ProHD, GW Security 5, JideTech PTZ, etc. but I am not sure how to gauge the quality.

Let's calculate shall we! We are going to store our video with the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) also known as H.265. And we are going to use a bitrate of 3 mbit.

Here is a HEVC 3 mbit sample, so you know what the quality looks like.

First let's go from bit's to bytes since hard drive storage is expressed in bytes. 3 mbit per second writes 384 kilobytes per second to your hard drive.

Now we want to record for a whole month and after that month we start looping and write over the previous recording. This gives us a month time to check the security footage if something happened and make a copy before the camera overwrites it.

31 days times 24 hours times 3600 seconds time 384 kb = 1,028,505,600 kb or 980 GB.

You can get a 1TB hard drive for about 40 USD, which any business should be able to afford. Here is a H.265 camera that only records when motion is detected for about 60 USD.

But what about older camera's? By far the most used codex for storing video is H.264. On lower bitrates the quality is lower then H.264

If we store at 6 mbit (this is 1080P youtube quality) we need 2 TB, if we store at 12 mbit we need 4 TB.

But what if we have a 100 camera's?

Let's calculate how long it takes for a 100 camera's to fill up a 1 TB hard drive at 3 mbit.

100 x 384 x 3600 x 24 = 3,2 TB per 24 hours.

To store for a week and then loop we need 7 hard drives that are 3 TB in size. The cost for 7 3TB hard drives is about 500 dollars.

Conclusion: in 2019 it's totally feasible, both technologically and economically to store HD footage from many security cameras.
