Our cat hardly goes for the post. Far prefers the cardboard scratchers. Must be a texture thing. Hasn't scratched the carpet since we switched to cardboard.

Cheap, don't last long, but good to start.

More expensive, but last much, much longer. The cardboard is much tougher

Amazon has them. There are tons of them.

You really just need 4 suction cups, twine, and a platform

My cats have never once chosen a bed over a box. But I bought them a scratch lounge and it's their favorite thing ever.

I found one on Amazon.

u/Enchelion · 12 pointsr/funny

It's not like this stuff is hard to install. The ceiling things just need a joist to screw into, or use a chandelier mounting system. You can buy a four-pack set of cat wall fixtures for $47. Or DIY with some basic tools (the carpets probably the most expensive part of these).

Nothing about the gif says the house is fancy. This looks like it could be a daylight basement in a 50's era suburb development.

I had this problem and you can make a heated bed for him to stay in the garage.

im on mobile so sorry for the gross link, or if it doesn't work. i found it on amazon under "mounted cat tree." It doesn't come with the little cloths on the perches, so i used some stick on carpeting and just slapped it right on there.

u/duakelinci · 7 pointsr/buncomfortable

Thank you! I got it from Amazon!

u/sciamatic · 7 pointsr/Atlanta

She should be fine until the 20th. Also, if she's just growling and hissing at your cats, then they'll probably adjust to each other in a couple of weeks.

But there are also heated cat houses on Amazon that're great for feral or stray cats. I have this one. It is NOT waterproof, so don't leave it uncovered, but it's great for outdoor kitties.

u/Thecatcountess · 6 pointsr/blogsnark

I’ve been there! Here are my ideas:

Maybe a glowing led dog collar or a reflective dog vest for night walking? A dog raincoat is nice to have in the rainy months.

Pet beds always seem to need replacing.

I know you said she has a good vacuum, but one year I bought my parents a roomba for pet hair. I also bought them an eye vac because they sweep their kitchen so frequently and I thought it might save them from having to bend over so often.

You could buy ornaments with their names on them or pictures if she doesn’t already have them. You could also consider having pet portraits made by an Etsy artist or from r/artstore & r/hungryartists .

I’ve purchased catnip bubbles after seeing many internet cats enjoying them. However, my old tortie was NOT impressed. She prefers an actual plant that she can murder. You could grab a few plants. Heated cat houses are also a thing.

When all else fails, animal lovers generally seem to appreciate donations in their honor to animal welfare charities. Good luck!

The Molly and Friends tree looks nice but if you're going to spend $350 on a cat tree you could also check out Contempocat: https://www.contempocat.com/
We splurged on our floor to ceiling cat tree for the same reasons Odow mentioned: Our Siberians are rowdy and play rough on it, plus they're around 10 lbs already and they're only 9 months old. If you chose this breed for the hypoallergenic factor then you can get the planks without the carpet material which is nice, and it's all handmade from actual wood so it will last a long time.

For a scratching post we picked up this one: https://smile.amazon.com/Original-Scratch-Lounge-Worlds-Scratcher/dp/B000EIHQU0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524768417&sr=8-3&keywords=cat+scratch+lounge
They both love it and seem to favor it over the vertical one we bought.

I second the window hammock! We got a similar one: https://www.chewy.com/kh-pet-products-ez-window-mount/dp/128081?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=K%26H%20Pet%20Products&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8YXXBRDXARIsAMzsQuWlOD6k07ymU2W1LrxLVOBTGIyRTGJw2ZFpeuIx_HDByqyTyraD610aAsCHEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
The girls will often jump from the top of their tree (ceiling height) 4 feet down onto the window hammock and so far it has held up, even with both lounging in it at the same time.

Another thing to check out is an exercise wheel. We don't let our girls outside so they tend to have a lot of pent up energy. We picked up this cat wheel for around $450: http://www.gocatwheel.net/
It was really easy to train and it gets used daily, plus they sleep much better once they've had a run!

Another great "hunting" toy is this fishing pole type retractable wand: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XK34P46/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They go straight up COOKYDOOKS for this thing! I also picked up a pack of feathers so they could have some variety as well as the inevitable destruction of them: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WD2MLMR/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The FURminator works well for one of my girls but not so great for the other one. I found a comb called the Greyhound comb: https://greyhoundcomb.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=20
There are lots of "Greyhound Style" combs out there so it's up to you if you want a knockoff. That website also has some nice grooming products. I just picked up the Essentials Travel Kit to try and I gotta say, they looked quite glamorous!

I hope all of those links work, I'm still a bit of a noob when it comes to commenting on Reddit cause I mostly just lurk. Congrats on your new floof, they are SO affectionate and fun!!

u/sillybelcher · 4 pointsr/youseeingthisshit

Cats aren't difficult at all - that "aloof" personality many attribute to them is simply that they are not needy or always looking to be micromanaged. All you really need to do is: keep the litter box clean, keep a full bowl of fresh water, keep scratching toys around (I have both scratching posts, and these rectangular "pads" made of thick cardboard that they climb on and scratch on, throw around a few toys (and get some they can use to keep themselves entertained when no humans are around), and if possible, give them window(s) to watch the birds/squirrels, etc. They're extremely low-maintenance. For mine, even getting them as kittens, they didn't need to be trained to use the litter box since they instinctively feel the urge to dig and squat, then bury. It was literally as simple as bringing them home, making sure they know where the litter box is, then playing with them/giving them attention and snuggles and that's it. Use a squirt bottle to deter unwanted behavior (keeping them off the kitchen counters, etc.). They pretty much take care of themselves.

I got it on Amazon! Shipped in 1 business day and was super easy to assemble. Looks like they are out right now though. I took a lot of time comparing different cat trees and this one had the best reviews and the company actually makes solid stuff (from a few other things I've purchased from them) and have good customer service!

Cat shelves may be an option if you have an empty wall or two or a doorway you wouldn't mind having a cat bridge crossing, and either are handy yourself or have access to someone who is, or have disposable income.

I bought this last year for my own poor kitty, she loves it! Packed it away for the summer but it's out now and still going strong. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S9M2V8
Biggest downside is that she's less needy for cuddles, but at least she's comfortable when I'm not home.

u/taitycakes · 3 pointsr/cats

Perhaps some toys for indoors that might mimic the climbing and bugs and critters he might encounter outside, like a tree like this. You could probably build one yourselves with PVC, carpet scraps, wire, furniture staples, wood palettes, and a grocery store cat toy.

As for getting some fresh air, you could try harness training him and take him on little walks. And, you could always ask for some screens to be installed on windows and if you have a balcony, you can probably do a DIY screened-in.

You could also try to train him to stay away from the door when someone opens it. I saw it on Animal Planet one time (so take it with a grain of salt; this is basically third hand information) that they used a laser toy to direct the cat to the cat tree when they would leave and lock the door so it learned to stop hovering around the door when someone came and left.

If all else fails, give him a collar with ID AND chip him so that if he is found safe or otherwise, they'll contact you.

Scavenger hunts are too much fun! I should be working! RAWR! Thanks for the fun break =]

1.) Something that is grey. My name is makeup and I am grey! WL

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. This color is called "Naughty Nautical". Nautical = water, water = rain. =D?? WL

3.) Something food related that is unusual. Pretty sure most people don't have teeney shaped veggie cutters. WL

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!) This is for my two parrots! My quaker especially loves dried papaya. I'm teaching her how to fly right now and have been using food as a reward, but we ran out of papaya a couple of weeks ago, and our local bird store has been out of stock for a long time. Turns out that Whole Foods doesn't carry dried papaya either. Rawr! WL

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I had heard about this when the movie came out in English. I liked the movie and then moved on with my life. Come this spring, I found myself facing a LOT LOT LOT of driving by myself, so I started borrowing audiobooks from the library. I borrowed all three of these books and REALLY enjoyed them. It wasn't at all what I expected. They're murder mysteries with a lot of themes about violence against women. When I learned about the author, it became that much more interesting. The author wrote these books with the intention of making 10, but died after the third one. They found them after he died. The themes about sexual violence stem from a gang rape he witnessed as a teenager. He never forgave himself for not being able to help her, so he channeled all those emotions into his writing later in life. Anyway.....interesting stuff. Good books. I recommend them :)

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! Pfft.

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...) If I was a cat, this would be my JAM!

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. Dresses are admittedly useful for avoiding public indecency charges, but not really useful beyond that. BUT LOOK AT THE RAINBOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WL

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Not on my wishlist (it's on American Netflix though!), but everyone should be aware of the impact of plastic on the environment and our bodies. Education is everything. Plus, there's a newborn baby at the end.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. 1. Stab zombie in the skull. 2. ??? 3. Profit. The reviews rave that it's super sharp and doesn't stick so it probably wouldn't get stuck in their skull like other knives. WL

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. I don't know if I'd use the word profound, but it would sure help me out. A big passion of mine is learning to ID birds. I'm pretty good at most birds, but finding information on juveniles is VERY difficult sometimes. I've used this book before to help identify birds in hand, but I think the information regarding juvenile plumage would help me identify young birds from afar. It's even part of my job to identify birds! WL

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. This is an Add-On item, but it's also a hair addon =P Not on my WL, but I'm losing my hair like crazy so I might have to look into these >.>

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? This isn't the most expensive item on my list (that was #8), but it's the one that would help me the most! When I do field work, I tend to have a lot of gear on me at once, and the extra strain of binoculars around my neck tends to give me some really freaking sore muscles. A harness would be MUCH easier on my shoulders/neck/back. I start field work again in October, so I plan on buying it for myself by then anyway =] WL

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave. This is larger than the average bread box.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. I am smaller than a golf ball! WL

16.) Something that smells wonderful. This smells amazing!!! I'm infatuated with cinnamon, but had to stop using cinnamon Crest YEARS ago because I developed a bad reaction to it. This stuff is expensive, but the company is very environmentally responsible and I feel good giving my business to them. WL

17.) A (SFW) toy. This seems pretty SFW unless you're playing Cards Against Humanity. evil grin WL

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school. I used sticky notes all the time in school! WL

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. I've obsessed with birds since I was 11. I've been obsessed with rainbows forever. I'm currently obsessed with sushi. THIS IS ALL THREE! WL

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. Hear me out! This baby can keep ice for DAYS. Sitting out in the sun for hours on end? NO PROBLEM! YOU'LL HAVE ICE AT THE END OF THE DAY!! Seriously, Thermos needs to pay me for how much I rave about their stuff. My water bottle has still had ice in it after three days AND being refilled twice. No joke.

This beauty was made in OR.

I'd suggest starting off with something more like a 5- or 6-foot tree.

For example, this is about $100 including shipping.

Look for platforms that have railings. My cats won't sleep in a place where they're worried about rolling off. I'm hoping the hammocks on this new one serve the same purpose.

Also, cats seem to disregard the first 2-3 feet of the tree from the floor up. Even the kitten goes straight off the second level on this tree, and ignored the bottom house on the old one.

If your cat is declawed, that makes a HUGE difference (and it's a very bad idea.) I've never gotten a declawed cat to climb, even when structures should have been good enough.

Otherwise, if you're building your own, I'd suggest nothing but verticals and maybe a ladder for the first 3 feet. (Healthy cats will ignore the ladder, but kittens and the elderly might use it.) I've been amazed how much my cats want to be UP VERY HIGH. And that's why I got the 8-foot tree. I've got one that will happily hide out in the ceiling if she can find an opening. (We had a leak, so there was a hole.)

Put it near a window or in a central place with a nice view. Cats LOVE being able to watch the world.

u/xxlemonchan · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Allourah Lou! I just think it sounds sweet, especially if she's a munchkin darling.

I love kitties! I just adopted my second one not too long ago. The things you need: Litterbox (I prefer clumping litter) a litter mat, litter liners.... Something cool to get her is one of these or just a feather toy- kittens love those!

u/oshtep · 1 pointr/funny

Not exactly the same thing, but I've never seen a cat that doesn't love those x shaped cardboard scratching posts. My cat loves it, and my parents kittens sleep on top of each other on it, assuming they didn't just fight over it with the loser taking the real scratching post.
