In the 90's Folgers introduced these and they are still available.
Great for backpacking

ok, we can work with this. this isn't a big deal, and i'm gonna help you out, assuming you want to be a man of honor and not let a bunch of internet strangers down. Which we all know you won't, right? RIGHT?!
Anywho, you agreed to eat a giant pile of shit. Let's interpret this as, "i will consume feces in some form or fashion". You didn't say YOUR feces, you only said feces.
There is a form of coffee beans that are harvested from the feces of the civet in the Phillippines. The critter consumes these beans, and villagers collect the beans after they have passed through the critter's digestive track. Why? Who the fuck knows. Fortunately for you, these can be purchased on Amazon
Now, some may contend that these coffee does not constitute "a gigantic pile of shit", but I would argue that is semantics and that the beans are themselves feces. It'd be no different that taking the corn kernels from our own feces and brewing up a nasty shit maize tea. And like i said, no where in your wager did you mention it'd be your own shit.
I look forward to watching the video of you drinking coffee.
I home roast and if I buy coffee it will NEVER be pre-ground. The only time I break both of these rules is when it comes to Cafe du Monde. I've tried adding chicory myself but I don't see the point when CDM already does such a good job.
Edit: as others have pointed out to me, CDM canned products are garbage. It is all I've tried other than my own attempts to blend coffee and chicory. Until I try the real thing, I'll keep drinking my canned crap. Thanks for the feedback!
You make fun of it, but I have Death Wish coffee in my pantry, which has pretty much identical labeling.
PSA: I'm not shilling for this coffee. It's not very good.
You can buy some coffee in bags but it's not that popular. Since most coffee makers pour water through the beans, you need more beans/ground coffee to get stronger coffee. I guess manufacturers found selling prepackaged coffee like tea isn't that lucrative if people want to pick how much coffee beans they want.
The resin that green mountain uses in their cartridges isn't recyclable or biodegradable.
These are and they're a lot cheaper. If you use a keurig 2.0 you may need a clip to bypass the DRM.
http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM/
There are 97% biodegradable ones on Amazon and they're super cheap as far as k-cups go!
http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM/
Interesting, because I have the exact opposite experience. Want to buy a book? Cheaper on Amazon than in the store. Want to buy some electronics? Cheaper on Amazon. Literally any item at a Staples can be found cheaper on Amazon.
And they have a ton of items that are just not easy to find physically. A while ago I bought some Vietnamese coffee. I'd have to travel 1.5 hrs each way just to check if the local Vietnamese import store has it.
Expand their horizons. Be creative. Find a local BDSM club and tell them that you joined. Tell them you're thinking of eating edible insects and maybe some Kopi Luwak to drink with them. (It's awful, trust me). See what you can get them to do and have some fun.
Are coffee tea-bags not popular for some reason? They are my go-to for camping.
If you want instant coffee this isn't terrible, or even Starbucks Via. Every other instant coffee I've tried has tasted like stomach acid.
Beg to differ, hyvin löytyy Amazonistakin
I'd suggest using Trung Nguyen coffee and Longevity Sweetened Condensed Milk for the closest to what you can get in Vietnam.
Seriously, the Trung Nguyen coffee has ruined me to anything else, it's got this naturally sweet, almost cocoa-like flavor that is amazing by itself.
Now I want to order this https://www.deathwishcoffee.com/
https://smile.amazon.com/Death-Wish-Coffee-Strongest-Certified/dp/B006CQ1ZHI?sa-no-redirect=1
If, like me, you're not picky about your coffee, but you like the convenience of a Keurig, you can get 80 K-Cups for $26. The coffee actually has great reviews, too.
Does Death Wish Coffee count?
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B006CQ1ZHI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00FL6PCF6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00
See, when I buy compostable k-cups I'm talking about these. Do they still have an issue breaking down? Seems like it's mostly just coffee and filter.
Ok, here's the totally non-essential, and stupidly expensive for what it is, but I won't go out even overnight without is my Nalgene coffee press or the GSI Nalgene coffee filter. The filter weighs nothing, it's the coffee and sugar that gets you. Now, if you are good with typical Maxwell House/Folger's coffee, and you drink it with cream and sugar, there is one good alternative. Maxim Korean Coffee Packets are amazingly good. I use 2 packets every morning and sometimes again in the evening. The 100 pack does me good for about a month. If you're reading my post, checking out the product, and saying "Really, um... no.", then you are in the same shoes I was in until I tried it. Has sugar and cream already in it.
I'll also second the battery pack. Those who claimed that pillows and camp shoes are non-essential, I beg to disagree! That's like saying Gold Bond powder is non-essential! I'll admit that I'm not UL, but tax, tag, and title, out of town I'm weighing in right around 30 with 2 liters of water and food. Since I weigh 250, it's light enough.
If no one has read the amazon reviews for this coffee, they are an absolute goldmine.

Assuming you live in an area easily serviced by Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000F17AKC/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1451847939&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=trung+nguyen&dpPl=1&dpID=51tL6weAdDL&ref=plSrch
Care Du Monde is a shitty alternative. I'm not sure why people suggest it. For starters, it's a blend of arabica and robusta, when most of the street coffee here in Saigon is 100% robusta. Secondly, Viet coffee doesn't have chicory. Thirdly, Viet street coffee is roasted with butter and sugar and is the only coffee in the world, that I know of, that is roasted that way. The coffee I linked to is roasted that way plus they add cocoa. It's the stuff I use at home and is the closest I can get to the same caphe sua da that the lady on my street sells.
Finally, re: yogurt - Viet yogurt is made with condensed milk. I'm not sure what the equivalent to that would be. If you want to make a caphe sua da (condensed milk) you should hit an Asian market and try to find Vietnamese condensed milk because it tastes a lot different then western.
HTH
I just use the instant coffee. Really not a big difference to me in fresh brewed or instant. Especially when I'm out hiking, anything tastes amazing after a long day.
http://www.amazon.com/Medaglia-Instant-Espresso-Coffee-Ounce/dp/B002BTI9B0
I use San Fransisco Bay coffee from Amazon. They'd completely recyclable and about half the price or less compared to green mountain, especially if you use the subscribe and save option. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Y59HVM
Why don't more people just use stuff like this in their Keurig? They're just as convenient, cheaper, 97% biodegradable, fare trade, and, in my experience, just better tasting than the vast majority of K-cup varieties.
Cafe (Ca Phe) Sua Da is a really common Vietnamese drink that incorporates condensed milk with coffee that often has chicory as an adjunct. Cafe Du Monde is the most common brand of coffee that I've seen but you really can use anything.Note that it has chicory as an adjunct but a good dark roast can do the trick. They're made using a phin which as you can see, is fairly straight forward metal filter that relies on gravity and a finer grind to extract. It's really easy to make and quite delicious though I treat it more as dessert than coffee.
If you live in an area with a decent sized Asian population, you should be able to find it fairly easily as it's crossed over into non-Vietnamese shops. A good bet would be a pho shop or failing that, a bubble tea shop. However, if you live in a place that has a large Vietnamese population (e.g LA or Houston) you may be to explore Vietnamese coffee beyond cafe sua da. Houston, for example, has Long Coffee which does a variety of Vietnamese style coffees, all which are delicious. At the same time, one of Houston's more famous coffee shops Blacksmith does their own version of cafe sua da as the owner is one of the biggest proponents of Houston's Vietnamese food scenes.
Quick tip : you can drink it straight up but it's served with a cup off ice so once it's finished brewing, mix the condensed milk in and pour it over the ice. The residual heat will melt the ice, dilute the drink and bring the sweetness down to something I find more palatable.

> Are you advocating for this to be a purely middle class sub?
No. I was thinking more along the lines of frugality is a means for personal joy and financial freedom. And r/frugal has become a bragging post on how not to spend money at all. Not cheapness, not frugality, but bragging. A display of anti-largess.
I'm feeling r/frugal should be a way for people to help each other see into life habits and change them. How showing me what was pulled out of a dumpster doesn't make me want to jump into a dumpster
And if someone thinks Kcups are too expensive at .70 each, I like the idea that this subreddit will help them find this option at .31 : http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-80-Count/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376358171&sr=8-1&keywords=san+francisco+bay+k+cups
I'm really into the single serving Mountian House meals, they taste better than what I make at home. Walmart carries them like $5 each. One for breakfast, one for dinner, and for lunch snacks, Oh! Ricey instant noodles (way better than ramen) or whatever for lunch. Throw a couple Vinacafe sachets for the morning coffee and you're all set!
I'm not Asian but I've found out that the Asian markets (specifically Vietnamese) carry the BEST food for backpacking. They're big into freeze dried, dehydrated stuff with tons of flavor their culture isn't big into refrigeration.
As far as stoves go? I use this one, works great. Oh, and a Sawyer mini filter.
As far as I understand the light roast push, it was a trend started by Starbucks in response to the "Charbucks" meme and, well, once Starbucks does something it's lodged in the public's brain.
Folgers is definitely not bad for $3/lb coffee.
Would I rather spend $20/lb on a pound of Stumptown coffee? Yes. But some people A) Can't afford that. B) Don't think it's worth it. C) Genuinely only drink coffee for the caffeine. I'm lookin at you, "Death before Decaf" people.
This is like when Chipotle hit the scene and Taco Bell was like "Holy shit we have to start trying now, you guys!"
On amazon this is the first result for coffee.
That container has 864 grams of coffee ground.
Google says that 100 grams of coffee beans has 838 mg of caffeine.
838 mg 8.64 = 7240 mg of caffeine. in that 30.5 oz coffee container.
Average weight globally is 62 kg.
The lethal dose of caffeine is 192 mg per kg.
62 kg 192 mg = 11904 mg of caffeine required to kill the average human 50% of the time.
You won't die from eating that much coffee ^^most ^^likely but you would experience an irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, and hallucinations.
Coffee you say?
Completely dependent on your location and availability, but Asian markets here in the West coast carry 10-packs of soup in different flavors all dehydrated about the size of a larger ramen seasoning packet for about $1.20. They come in a variety of flavors (miso: tofu, green onion, bean curd, etc.), I’ve eaten some over 2 years past shelf life and you’d never know it was expired. Plus they come with seaweed (a good source of vitamin c). You can also buy a jar of condensed seasoning (powdered) that will last about 40 meals - longer if rationed - they’re typically $4-6.
The Asian markets also sell coffee packs with creamer and sugar blended in shaped like Starbucks Via packets. I bought them on sale last time, 100-pack was $5.
It's already in the "dry New Orleans coffee". Like this; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000E5JIU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8di1BbEZDSFDS
I use a coffee based rub at my places for braised pork shoulder. However I use [instant espresso] (http://www.amazon.com/Medaglia-DOro-Instant-Espresso-Coffee/dp/B002BTI9B0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407518248&sr=8-1&keywords=instant+espresso). the rub is made up of the coffee, smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Never tried it on short ribs, but its very tasty, the coffee is subtle though.
Basically, yeah. I use this one (although that's an absurd price).
I don't see why you couldn't use instant coffee, although I'd bump it to 1.5tsp because it's a little weaker. I use 2tsp of espresso powder when I make this because I like getting a little more coffee flavor.
Found out about this stuff in korea. Instant coffee with the cream and sugar pre-added into the packets. Turns whatever the shit that comes from the DEFAC into something tolerable. Obviously not as good as fresh brewed but still pretty good. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GV9RZC/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944579842&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B003VCULUS&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=110VKJ4X9MJHDEWAQ1RJ

There's a company out in california that makes k-kup compatible cups using all biodegradable materials. And they are cheaper than store brand generics. They come out to 37 cents a cup instead of 50 for store brand and 75 for keurig brand

completely disregard every comment on this board, your search is over:

No, not many people have heard of it. Yes, I spent lots of time to find the best coffee for the trail. Yes, this is hands down the best coffee I've ever had in my life. It mixes perfectly, and has the perfect amount of sweetness to it. It's absolutely delicious, and no you won't find a better coffee ON THE PLANET.
It has to be like Stok? Stok isn't very good in my opinion and 6 hours to brew is too short. Even the 10 hours Stok's claims to brew is too short. Just buy a mason jar, pour grounds in and fill with water. Let it sit in the fridge for at least 18 hours. Buy an extra fine reusable filter and use that to filter out the grounds.
Here's what I use:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JN2K046/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use these grounds and love it:

If you're comparing the taste you made, to the one you found at the store. There are several things that can be in play. If you're using old coffee it can have a sour taste due to the oils within the beans going rancid. It could also be due to using cold water, which brings out a sour taste.
So in general I would go to a store that has high foot traffic, this lessens the chances of getting old coffee. You also might want to use "cafe Du Monde", the yellow can. Also check if your milk has expired. Good luck.
$12 is expensive! Have you considered buying direct? http://shop.cafedumonde.com/coffee.html
Amazon is a little cheaper too: http://www.amazon.com/Cafe-Du-Monde-Coffee-Chickory/dp/B0000E5JIU
OK thats good to know, not sure if we have the condensed milk at the store or not.
Is this the same coffee? http://www.amazon.com/Trung-Nguyen-Vietnamese-coffee-can/dp/B000F17AKC/ref=pd_bxgy_gro_img_y
It looks little different, will I need coffee grinder for this?
This is the filter

It's funny because they have them linked all 3 together in suggested, I guess lot of people saw the video and bought all 3.
There are coffee singles:
https://www.amazon.com/Folgers-Classic-Medium-Coffee-Singles/dp/B001FA1KJO
Both Folgers and Maxwell House make coffee bags that are just like tea bags, except that they need to steep a little longer.

Try instant coffee. I picked up this brand at Market of Choice not too long ago, and it's actually really tasty. Just add water.
Is this
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002BTI9B0/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/185-0789953-7073021
What you're referring to? It's the best cup of coffee I've ever had while backpacking
This is the best trail coffee I have found in my opinion.
This Korean instant coffee is actually pretty alright. I drink it some nights when I'm feeling extremely lazy.
https://www.amazon.com/Maxim-Original-Korean-Coffee-100pks/dp/B005GV9RZC
Umm, this Dragon Ball Z Funko is amazing, I didn't know they made my husband into an action figure!
Dragonite is also very adorable <3 He was always a fav of mine!
Also, Death Wish Coffee sounds very interesting and mysterious. Hmm.
Whats the raffle phrase? :D
Not OP, but I used to drink generic, regular coffee with 2 creams, 2 sugars. After trying "better" coffee and playing around with the Keurig at work, you begin to appreciate the actual blends and boldness of coffees, whereas adding creamer and sugar actually ruined the taste(s) for me. Aka different blends, stronger roasts, etc etc.
Right now, my favorite coffee is San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser and it's delicious!
$29.75 for 80 San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser cups is tough to beat.
It's good stuff for Keurig coffee, and the cups are 97% biodegradable, so you don't have to feel like a schmuck for wasting a shit ton of plastic.
But they make it conveniently!
Have you tried the San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser? It's actually really good. The mesh bottom helps I think. And relatively inexpensive.
https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007Y59HVM
New Orleans style coffee!
I have an even better solution.
Buy This and This
Then make lattes yourself that taste better and run you ~.25 to .30 cents a cup. Pocket the difference and profit.
It doesn't sound dumb because it has been done already by huge companies here and here.
High quality coffee is usually ground right before it is used as coffee becomes stale quickly. Some people say after 15 mins after being ground it starts to degrade. I can personal say that I don't like grinding my coffee the night before I use it. So any form of distribution network for pre-ground coffee won't be high quality.
Also things like the flavoring is going to be what will be different about your product but that as well is a market that bigger players are already in. Coffee mate(owned by nestle) is every where in grocery stores and comes in 20+ flavours already and coming in both liquid and powder form. It also doubles as creamer. Which is a bonus as most people buying your product probably won't like the biter taste. Your examples of flavours pumpkin spice, French vanilla, they don't have a Amaretto flavour but they do have Hazelnut. You get the point it is going to be a uphill battle to compete on flavours.
Another thing quality coffee is not artificially flavoured but rather it has to do with the bean itself. Coffee doesn't taste like pumpkin spice normally.
The business idea had a good start you saw a need and you tried to fill it. Next time think about barrier to entry to the business and do some research on players already in the field.
As for your brother get him a french press and a blade grinder plus a kettle. If he can buy freshly roasted coffee it will be the easiest and best cup of coffee he has ever had. I used a coffee machine and pre-ground coffee in first year in my dorm and it was great.
Folgers as well as maxwell house actually sell this item. I get them at the grocery store for about. $5 a box. Not a bad price for 19 cups! They come out quite good and super quick and easy! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001FA1KJO?pc_redir=1409968993&robot_redir=1
Maxwell House Coffee Singles
This One!
It’s the best espresso powder I’ve ever had. But it’s half the price at Smart ‘N Final. Not sure if a store like that is an option for where you’re located but just throwing that in there :) Lemme know if you try it and like it.
I haven't made coffee since I found Medagalia Instant Espresso. It's expensive on Amazon, but I buy it locally for $3.50. It's honestly amazing stuff!
If you enjoy Nestle instant, then you will definitely enjoy Starbucks instant coffee. They come out to about 50 cents a cup and for someone who is new to coffee, these are a good start. I usually keep a couple in my backpack when we run out of coffee at work. Hope this helps!
In addition to Ice Tea powder, there is actually Instant Tea that is made with the same process as Instant Coffee.
Here's some on amazon. It's not that great, so it has a lot in common with instant coffee.
I've always considered a Kettle "Necessary", myself. However I also drink a lot of tea and very seldom make coffee... To the point where I actually have a wacky Tea Maker machine which, while fun to watch was hardly cost effective. In neither case have I noticed how 115V really causes any problems. Considering how often people sleight on Americans for a supposed "I want it now" attitude they sure do seem to take issue with the extra time waiting for water to boil.
Interestingly, Just as there is Instant Tea to Instant Coffee, there are also Coffee Bags
https://www.amazon.com/Folgers-Coffee-Singles-Classic-Roast/dp/B0055B6J9A?th=1
They sell them where I live
I would recommend this Korean instant coffee:
http://www.amazon.com/Maxim-Original-Korean-Coffee-100pks/dp/B005GV9RZC
Like everyone else is suggesting, it doesn't compare to drip coffee; however, cream and sugar are included in the individual packets and you can control how much goes into each cup by pinching the cream/sugar end of the coffee packet as you pour it into your cup.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006CNTR6W/ref=s9_dcacsd_dcoop_bw_c_x_2_w?th=1
I personally like Death Wish Coffee since it gives me a kick in the ass when I'm still feeling groggy after waking up. But it has a very high caffeine content (it claims to be the strongest coffee in the world) so it's not suitable if you have a higher caffeine sensitivity, i.e. it makes you jittery.
I also haven't tried making Death Wish Coffee in a cold brew method, and I imagine that the concentrate made from it would be very potent in terms of caffeine. Beware!
oh look, the perfect coffee for me.
Death Wish Coffee - The Worlds Strongest Coffee
Ludicrous Speed in a cup.
I use a coffee called Death Wish. Cold brewed is just smoother, but honestly i like that i can make a bunch of it over night. well afternoon + over night.
I make mine with one tablespoon of cold pressed coconut oil, three drops of ez sweets and two mini moo creamers. Of course I also use a brand of coffee called Death With Coffee...

Worlds strongest coffee.
My fiance is a math and physics major and his uncle got him a set of mugs that say "I love math, it makes people cry." He said he got them online and they had a bunch for different majors.
If he doesnt already have a press, maybe he would like one for his coffee and loose leaf teas?

Death Wish is a local coffee I tried once, and never stopped. I pretty much only drink this now. It's soooo good. It's super strong and dark. Mine is cooling off right now then I'm about to drink the entire pot.
I drank it straight black and super strong before keto, but now I add MCT oil and soluble collagen powder and it doesn't really change it.
Some of the reviews for Death Wish coffee beans make me chuckle.
Your basis is somewhat flawed -- what matters to end consumers is the cost-per-serving.
So lets standardize on an 8oz serving, which is the recommended output from a single K-cup.
Basis:
K-cup vs. Pour-over:
====
Pour-over recipes generally look for a 14:1 to 17:1 water:coffee ratio by weight; to make this comparison most favorable to the K-cup, we'll use the 17:1 ratio.
With 236.592g of water, that means 13.91g of coffee, which is 32.6 servings per bag. To make the comparison as favorable as possible, we'll consider that you'll use that 0.6 servings somehow.
K-cup vs. Autodrip:
====
Auto-drip recommends 60g of coffee per liter of water. A liter makes 4.22 eight-oz servings of coffee, meaning 14.21g of coffee per serving, which means 31.92 servings per pound of coffee.
Conclusions:
====
All in all, using premium coffee from a local roaster is a little more expensive than the cheapest reasonable K-cup option. However, you can get coffee of superior quality to the best K-cups for less money than you can buy the cheapest of the K-cups, which means that:
tl;dr excellent coffee is more expensive than mediocre K-cup coffee, but not by much; decent coffee is cheaper than K-cups.
Also, I'd recommend picking up some of these (they have smaller ones than the 80 count, if you want to try them out)
They look a bit different, but they work just as well as the other k-cups. The coffee is damn good too, for those that like a strong coffee, that's not bitter. I've had Fog Chaser and French Roast, and my wife and I both like them very much.
Not sure about you, but I don't use a ton of shelf stable stuff anymore. I have a big row of mason jars up high full of probably rancid gluten free flours and sugars from my pre-keto days :p They look cool, though!
Besides the three you mentioned: maybe nuts? Is there anything you go through fast enough that it won't need to be in the fridge or in a smaller, airtight, opaque container? For oils or vinegar that you go through fast enough, you could get pretty glass bottles with pour spouts. Actually, some olive oils come in really pretty bottles already.
What about coffee? I buy small, soft k-cups that use less plastic, so we actually keep regular and decaf coffee in wide mouth mason jars by the keurig. (this brand; they also are sold at Costco: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007TGDXNO). Beans or ground coffee would be prettier than the cups, if you use that. If you aren't going through coffee pretty quickly, I don't recommend this, because gets stale.
There are more options if you're willing to do bigger jars than masons. Tea bags? I tried those in a wide mouth mason jar and they just don't fit very well. But a big wide canister with straight sides would hold tea bags pretty nicely if you either have enough of the same kind or don't mind digging through a jumble to find the flavor you're looking for.
Non-food things? Utensils? Measuring spoons? These would probably look best in the tall narrow jam jars (8 or 12oz) or the wide mouth pint or 1.5 pint jars. The straight sides look really nice.
Some friends of mine bought all Market Pantry (target store brand) canned goods. The label/branding is pretty simple, so it actually looked really clean and elegant when displayed on a bookshelf. If you use a lot of canned goods, this might be an option too and doesn't even require jars.
We use these biodegradable pods:
San Francisco Bay OneCup, Fog Chaser, 80 Single Serve Coffees https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kkp5xbRPV1H5R
We buy them at Costco and my coffee snob DH enjoys them ;)
You can also get a reusable keurig filter and fill it with your own coffee. You just have to not overstuff it, and wash it of course!
Consider the SF Bay Fog Chaser. It's the best kcup I found where the taste isn't so compromising, and is (supposedly) environmentally friendly!
I used the reusable K-cup thingie in my home Keurig, and it never worked right after that (we ended up replacing it shortly thereafter). I thought it was just bad timing, so I used it in our office one, and we had to buy a new office one then, too. I don't know why, but I had terrible luck with those.
I buy San Francisco Bay K-cups. I first saw them at Costco (which no longer sells them), loved them, and kept buying through Amazon. They are working towards 100% biodegradable packaging. Their K-cups don't have plastic on the bottom (just a plastic ring), and the bags that hold the K-cups I believe are compostable. My favorite flavors are Fog Chaser and French Roast: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007Y59HVM
FYI, you can buy delicious, cheap, completely biodegradable k cups on Amazon. There are also plenty of recyclable brands out there as well.
And another, even cheaper overall!
http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=pd_bxgy_gro_text_z
That sounds about right for k-cups. That's about 75 cents per cup.
I usually pay between .50 and .60 when I buy k-cups.
You can get them for as cheap as 36 cents each on amazon
Of course, it's still more expensive than grinding and brewing your own coffee (which you can also do anyway with reusable K-Cups), but the convenience factor is what you're paying for.
Get your K-Cups from Amazon, you can get them pretty cheap and in bulk. Personally I like San Francisco Bay Coffee's Fog Chaser blend. Nice bold cup, plus it's fair trade and the k-cup is biodegradable.
HOWEVER, if you still need your K-Cups fix, this is a good deal:
http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-80-Count/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375811572&sr=8-1&keywords=fog+cutter+coffee
You lucky duck.
I can't be too jealous because I also found a Kuerig at my local Goodwill. It was 12 bucks and pretty much brand new. I think it's the Keurig B40 which only has two cup sizes, which is annoying since they're both small...
The one thing that bugs me about these machines is the fact that they produce so much waste. I ended up getting these K-cups because not only were they the best deal, but they are also bio-degradable. Not only that, it's actually damn good coffee:

Valhalla Java is a tastier version of Death Wish Coffee by the company of the same name. It's intense stuff. Technically, for my body weight, 1 cup of it is the caffeine threshold before I wander into dangerous territory where I'm almost certainly harming some of my organs.
I buy this stuff on Amazon called G7. It’s cheap and I really really like it. Coffee, creamer, and sugar in one.
https://smile.amazon.com/Instant-Premium-Vietnamese-Servings-Sachets/dp/B00HMCMADE/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=g7+coffee&qid=1568182291&s=gateway&sprefix=g7&sr=8-3
Also, it’s in individual packs so it super convenient on the go or backpacking.

G7 Trung Nguyen brand coffee from Vietnam a.k.a land of the coffee. I personally think that the Starbucks cafe latte is quite weak and watery (i do get it cold w/ ice though). The consistency is a little thicker and creamier but the flavor is suuuuper rich and aromatic.
All ya'll VIA drinkers need to check your coffee game.
BOOM!
Vietnamese instant w/ creamer and sugar included. Do 2 packets if you have a large (>8-10oz cup). Like $0.23 a pack from Amazon. If you have a decent Asian market in your town they'll usually go for closer to $15 for the same 100 pack bag.
Seriously the truth. Unless you want your coffee w/out cream/sugar.
Mountainhouse/Wise/Backpacker's Pantry are my go-tos. The lady loves Good to Go meals when we're in the woods. I'll admit, they're delicious, but they're also several dollars more per package. https://goodto-go.com/ - The Thai Curry is our favorite.
Beyond that...peanut butter, tortillas or wheat wraps, Lära and Clif bars, Stovetop Stuffing, oatmeal, dried salami, cheese, soup mixes. If you don't mind the weight, you'd be shocked at how good a SPAM and Stovetop burrito can be at the end of the day.
For coffee, I've fallen in love with Vinacafe for its low price, decent taste, and all-in-one creamer and sugar inclusion: https://www.amazon.com/Vinacafe-Instant-Coffee-2-Pack-sachets/dp/B00Q7DKXKQ . If the pack's still light enough this time around, I may add my AeroPress and some pre-ground coffee, plus some teabags for her.
I always assumed it was cheaper, and healthier, but I could be wrong.
Edit:
It's also personal preference. Easier to make, no filters needed.
30.5 oz of folgers costs 7.74 (USD) on amazon, and can make about 91 cups of coffee. that's about 8 cents a cup, plus 1 cent for the coffee filter.
Tetley's is 4 cents, and easier to make.

This is the ideal coffee. You may not like it, but this is what peak coffee performance looks like.
Try getting "traditional" vietnamese coffee. [Cafe du Monde] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000E5JIU/ref=sr_rp_1?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&ie=UTF8&qid=1451103487&sr=sr-1&keywords=cafe+du+monde+coffee), or Trung Nguyen are the most popular. If it tastes weak, try adding more grounds or packing / screwing the filter down tighter. My phin can't be screwed in, so I just pack the grounds down pretty tight. It should take about 4 minutes to brew completely. Also, if you're using sweetened condensed milk, make sure you're adding the coffee to the milk, not the other way around.
If you want to buy a phin, buy this one. I post that link whenever this video gets posted because I've been so happy with that particular model; I have two and I've used them once or twice a day for over a year now with no complaints. It's my go-to daily cup and it's fantastic.
The smaller/cheaper models I've tried all had failings in one way or another, but if you're looking for a good phin, I recommend the one linked above.
To find your ideal brew in the phin, start with 15g of the same coarseness you'd use for a Chemex (#5 / "beaker" setting on my Bodum grinder) and fill to the top with just-off-the-boil water. Top off your cup with more hot water when finished to dilute to taste. My morning cup uses 18-20g, but most of my friends prefer it around 14-16g. If you're pouring over sweetened condensed milk (ca phe sua da) use a finer grind to get a slower brew and a sharper slightly over-extracted flavor to counter the potent sweetness. Also consider a can of Trung Nguyen coffee grinds: they have some coffee and butter flavors added but deliver the exact taste of pho-house coffee.
I'll try a different bean. For some reason the store I was at only carried one that wasn't ground. Maybe I should shop around more for the bean. That's what I don't know about. The bean would make THAT much difference? Also what are some of the best whole bean coffee brands?
As for the Vietnamese coffee. I don't know what else to say. I used a chicory coffee. Is that pretty common? I mixed it with condensed milk to make it sweet. It wasn't quite as good as I remembered when I had desert coffee at the Vietnamese restaurant I used to go to. This is the coffee I got
I wouldn't consider myself a coffee connoisseur but rather I base my taste on what others think. This stuff is delicious (or that's what they think), the robusta sweetens the espresso while increasing its potency. Robusta is considered a lower grade strain but the Italians love lavazza and they invented espresso so they must know something that I don't.
http://www.amazon.com/Lavazza-Ground-Coffee-Italian-8-8-Ounce/dp/B001E5E0D8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398280507&sr=8-1&keywords=crema+gusto
Have you tried Lavazza? https://www.amazon.com/Lavazza-Crema-Gusto-Ground-8-8-Ounce/dp/B001E5E0D8 (not an affiliate link)
I've found that it has almost zero bitterness even when black and a very nice caffeine kick. I do 44/4 IF and I've taken to buying packs of bricks of this coffee and drink it black all through my fasts. (I don't know how it would taste to you as a super taster though, so just a suggestion.)
Not long. Technically the oils go rancid quickly. Like within a year. Though people on here will say you can have a can of coffee for years. If you’re any kind of coffee snob you won’t like it.
Full beans will always last longer than ground. I’ve heard unroasted coffee would have the longest shelf life, but then you have to roast it.
I just keep emergency coffee that I consider disposable after a year or so. I might use it to make a batch of cold brew or something. But I buy a jar of instant and then I buy a 4 pack of this on amazon when it’s on sale and swap them out yearly.

I am partial to Lavazza Crema e Gusto. Here a review in English and here you can buy it from Amazon.
Not exactly cheap, but not super expensive and very good. If you buy the six pack from Amazon, it is 4 dollar a pack.
When I am thirsty I love to drink Bloody Marys. I will never drink a cup of melted nacho cheese that has been sitting out for a week when I am thirsty.
Lavazzo italian espresso that wakes you right up in the morning. Thank you!

http://www.amazon.com/Folgers-Classic-Singles-19-Count-Servings/dp/B001FA1KJO
It's available. Folgers, for instance, sells them in the US.
They do make them, but the kinda suck. All the bad quality of stale pre-ground coffee and you can only fit a couple grams of beans inside the bag. That said, in a pinch they are quick and simple to use.
http://www.amazon.com/Maxwell-House-Singles-Original-19-Count/dp/B001M05070
These single use pour over filters are a better option if you can get fresh coffee.

There are several companies that make Coffee Bags like these.
You can brew coffee like this just fine, in fact you can buy it this way.
http://www.amazon.com/Maxwell-House-Singles-Original-19-Count/dp/B001M05070
However, coffee tends to be picky about it's extraction temperature and the amount of time the grinds spend exposed to water is pretty sensitive. Unlike Tea which tends to just get stronger as the steeping time increases, over extraction with coffee turns your delicious cup of joe into a bitter tincture of sadness.
Here's some reference on making good coffee

Here's one example

What about just mixing in espresso powder? Flavor, caffeine, basically no extra calories?
I wish I was a wizard! I just started experimenting by always making a second batch and adding different things. Oh, I forgot to say with the tiramisu-type ones: add a dash of almond extract.
Some things I've found to be good in 'mallows:
Dehydrated berries, crushed into powder.
Peppermint extract (with or without adding cocoa powder)
Instant espresso
Vanilla bean paste - this has become my standby recipe, sometimes dusted with crushed candy canes.
*Matcha, though I'm still trying to get the balance right for that nice, creamy green tea flavor.
Your marshmallows look gorgeous, by the way!
1 - There's really no need to rinse. Swishing the cage and grains around in the milk of a new batch should be sufficient.
2 - If it works for you, there's nothing wrong with it. I like it to ferment 24 hours, that way I only have to take care of it once a day, and so I don't overproduce and waste milk. Simply reduce the amount of grains you're using for it to take longer.
3 - I'm also on a ketogenic diet. There's really no way of knowing the carbohydrate content of homemade kefir, so I calculate it the same as commercially-produced kefir, about 6g carbs per 1/2 cup (118 ml).
Once I see pockets of whey in the curd (before it becomes fully separated), I remove the grains and let it continue to ferment (secondary fermentation) another 24 hours. At that point it's usually separated, so I just stir it together and refrigerate it. I figure this way I'm reducing the carb content as much as possible. I also only drink 1/2 a cup of kefir a day (1/4 cup morning and night)... I make it in a 2 oz instant espresso jar.
No, it's a different thing. Here it is: instant expresso powder
When I make my chocolate cake, I mix cocoa powder and instant expresso powder in a bowl and then add boiling water and mix. Then I let it cool and add buttermilk and vanilla extract and those are my wet ingredients (that I then mix with the butter, sugar, eggs, and dry ingredients).
Get some really good shit.. I'm in love with the Starbucks VIA. >> ... <<<

They are 50% and come out to .58 cents per coffee. Though they expire soon, but someone mentioned that they don't affect the taste at all.
I know this probably sounds crazy, but Starbucks Via is the best instant coffee I've tried. I can actually bare to drink it black.
http://www.amazon.com/Starbucks-Ready-Colombia-Coffee-count/dp/B00438XVGU#customerReviews
Maybe that could be your go-to rush coffee.
I use instant [coffee.] (http://www.amazon.com/Starbucks-Ready-Colombia-Coffee-count/dp/B00438XVGU/ref=pd_sim_gro_4) With a little Hersey chocolate syrup. Easy and not to bad
Kopi Luwak coffee
Instead of eating shit, you could just have a nice steaming cup of Civet coffee.
I like buying the coffee already in tea-bags. It's probably a bit more expensive but saves a bit of work:
They exist in the US as well... http://smile.amazon.com/Folgers-Coffee-Singles-Classic-Roast/dp/B0055B6J9A

Like all the Asian instants, they are a little weak. My wife and I use two of these + 2 vias for a 500ml shared cup of wake up.
Sounds like a plan! I may just save some cash and get some of this instead of the preworkout.

I have no clue what you've tried, and I'm no coffee connoisseur so I can only think of a few. Everyone around here seems to love Death Wish coffee, and a good chocolate coffee I like is Gevalia's Chocolate Mocha. :)
I agree on the body weight thing, helps quite a bit. Lately I've been using pre-ground (Deathwish). I don't have a grinder yet since I'm kinda between living situations (live with parents, very little room for my stuff as it is). But once I have more space I'll be moving on to whole-bean, fresh-grind.

5 pounds is $80.00

Fuck that I refuse to degrade myself because there's sub-par coffee.
Or you could just buy the 97% biodegradable ones - http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Breakfast/dp/B007TGDXMU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396251021&sr=8-1&keywords=san+francisco+bay+k+cups
You can get 80 count K-Cups from San Francisco Bay Coffee It is 35 cents per k-cup, which isn't too bad. I did the math and found I'd be spending about $20 more a year than what I spent when using the typical ground coffee picked up at the grocery store.
> I decided to see if prices are still similar, as the article is 3 years old. I found Black Silk on Amazon. Assuming they are still 8 grams per cup, the 24-pack, at $0.88 per cup, works out to $49.89/lb of coffee. If you buy the 72-pack, it's $0.62 per cup, which is $35.15/lb of coffee.
>
I get these, that work out to about $0.36 per cup.
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B007TGDXMU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

nearly guilt free K Cup
The resin that green mountain uses in their cartridges isn't recyclable or biodegradable.
These are and they're a lot cheaper. If you use a keurig 2.0 you may need a clip to bypass the DRM.
http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM/
If you want to go keurig again (I know you are looking for alternatives) look into these cups http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-80-Count/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375745311&sr=8-1&keywords=san+francisco+bay+k+cups The fog chaser and breakfast blend are pretty good. They are cheaper and there is less plastic waste. That or get the brew basket that you can use your own grind in. I do a combo of the two.
Yea they did. I got a mesh k cup with my keurig as a gift and it won't brew. That was actually the reason I wanted one. Now it barely gets used. I did find some degradeable cups http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM They send you a thin plastic container with the order to store the cups in. They come in biodegradable bags as well. Plus the coffee is pretty good 8)
OMG. They exist. Which is why articles like this piss me off so much. Why won't anyone provide a solution instead guilt trips? Try this:
http://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-OneCup-Coffees/dp/B007Y59HVM/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1425497186&sr=1-1&keywords=san+francisco+bay+coffee
These are BIODEGRADABLE, CHEAPER, and actually TASTE BETTER.
You can buy recyclable ones.
I just bought these for the first time since I'm sick of cleaning the reusable and refillable cups. They're cheap and better for the environment, but I bought the Keurig for convenience. So what I just bought is good. Supposedly only the foil lid isn't compassable.

I have a Keurig at home and I'm a little of a snob but also won't complain if I have regular coffee.
For camping I've been having the G7 3-1. All I have to do is heat up the water and I add 2 packets per cup.
Oh yea, I don't have an RV yet so I tent camp but once I get my RV I'll probably still drink the G7.
I'm a big fan of this off of Amazon.

You can say the same thing about coffee makers like the Keurig. I could understand the traditional water and pot kind, as that's using ground up beans that come cheap per ounce. You can get 30 oz of ground up beans for $7. Making say an 8 oz cup of coffee cheap.
