This is an odd photo out of context. The left side shows the filter on one side with air direction arrow facing out. On the right it shows filter reverse and the fan turned around. OP says use tape, picture uses string.

The filter should be mounted on the intake side with the airflow arrow pointed toward the front. This keeps the fan blades clean. The suction will hold the filter pretty well without the string but it helps keep it in place when it's off. Don't use tape as it leaves residue and will wear out.

OR you could just buy a box fan filter holder ...

u/KnottilyMessy · 11 pointsr/CleaningTips

It might be the humidity. Closets are generally dark and can get damp fast. If the closet is in the basement or an enclosed area of the house with little ventilation, it can lead to must smell.

As another user commented, start by cleaning everything out and wiping down all the surfaces. If you notice mold, take precautions and call a professional cleaning service.

Once the closet is clean, you have a few options. You can use cedar wood chips like these to help keep your linens fresh smelling and free of insects (as an alternative to something like mothballs). If the humidity is a problem, then you need either a cheap hanging dehumidifier bag or a portable dehumidifier if the problem just keeps coming back.

Hope this helps!

Edit: fixed links. Also wanted to mention that whichever dehumidifier option you go with will need to be replaced/emptied regularly.

u/trynadyna · 9 pointsr/Dynavap

With the vent on it won't stink up the whole house. These are a godsend though if discretion is paramount. Good luck, and make sure you watch all the videos and read everything you can on the dynavap so you can skip through the whole "learning curve" nonsense! lol

u/Anonymousguy44 · 8 pointsr/AnycubicPhoton

Howdy! I just got my printer today so this is fresh in my mind. I watched a lot of videos to understand what I needed and how to get everything set up. I would recommend checking out the 3DPrintFarm YouTube channel. There's a lot of great info in there. Here's a list of everything I picked up along with links to Amazon for the items I got off there. Hope it helps!

u/420MAINEiac · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

Purchased these on Amazon for about $9

One filter is not quite big enough to cover the entire intake, but two are more than enough. They stick right to the Velcro already in place. They don't block 100% of the light, but do a far better job than nothing. My tent sits in a room that is quite dark when not in use anyway, this was more of just a precaution.

u/tony7914 · 5 pointsr/LifeProTips

Good tip, if you're looking for a cheaper alternative they do make filters you can attach to box fans like this. Gizmo Breeze Fan Filter Attachments for 20 inch Box Fans https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y11WXOA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8cH6Cb3AX76GQ

u/DontForgetWilson · 5 pointsr/GoodValue

I recently got my second one of these after having the first for 3 years: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTKAPUU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Off-brand filters actually better: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076JJ42V7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I think that pack should be everything for a year or so.

I never have the ionizer on.

Reasons I like it:

  1. It moves a lot of air and cleans it well.
  2. Really robust permanent pre-filter that catches the big stuff to stop it from clogging your hepa filter faster.
  3. Replacement filters last a lot longer for the price than something like GermGuardian does for me.
  4. Air quality sensor and filter reminder lights
  5. HEPA filter seems more robust than most I see. Good build quality and a thicker design that probably wouldn't have issues bending from the level of airflow(which I've seen from AC filters).

The brand is a pretty major South Korean one(which seems to have a big air purifier market). They have a more expensive flagship model (https://www.amazon.com/AIRMEGA-Smarter-Purifier-Covers-1560/dp/B01C9RIACG/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=coway&qid=1564631008&s=hpc&sr=1-2-catcorr) that has more expensive filters and smart-phone apps but I honestly don't think the core product is much better.
u/Heliumx · 5 pointsr/homeautomation

You really wouldn't want something like a smart switch due to the power draw when you initially turn on the air conditioner AND you wouldn't really be able to control it. You'd want something that can shoot commands to the AC (assuming it comes with a remote that's IR).

The following products all fulfill that niche!

u/lfulfq · 4 pointsr/london

So, we just got an AirCon unit and this thing has been amazing:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CCMZ3FD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a seal that goes around the window. You can still open and close the window... but it should stop the huge birds coming in!

u/Rashkh · 3 pointsr/tea

What do you mean by automatic? There's something like this that'll brew tea with a button press. I've heard good things about it but it's not worth the price tag in my opinion.

I'd recommend getting a variable temperature kettle (very expensive right now. It falls to $65 on occasion), a timer, and either a french press, steeper, or strainer. They work quite similarly so it depends on what method you find most practical.

If you're brewing tea bags then you'd only need the variable temp. kettle and timer.

u/Mlzer · 3 pointsr/RepLadies

Definitely try dryer sheets, it’s helped my Neverfull and Emilie wallet immensely.

Awhile back there was a post on using Lavender Damp Rid Hangers to get rid of the factory smell too. Hang one in your closet, and shut your bag in with it (or you could hang it next to the damp rid) for a few days.

I haven’t personally tried using them to remove fufu, but I have used them in my closet. I live in a super damp apartment and even with a dehumidifier my closet always was/smelled damp and those work perfectly to get rid of both dampness and the damp smell. I’m pretty confident they’ll help.

Good luck!

u/SoonAfterThen · 3 pointsr/homegym

Here you go, OP. This refills the smaller ones that are quite cheap. I think this is the best price per pound on Amazon.

DampRid (7.5lbs for $10)

Oh, found a reusable container for it.

u/boomhauer710 · 2 pointsr/microgrowery
u/TheLurkingCrow · 2 pointsr/Asthma

It's funny you bring this up, I JUST purchased This air purifier and should arrive today! Totally looking forward to it!

u/jam905 · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

In addition to the three mentioned by u/Heliumx, here are a few others:

  • Tado
  • Pebble
  • Remotec ZXT-120 - needs a z-wave controller that's accessible via the internet.
  • Ambi
  • Altris

Finally, you can also use a Broadlink RM Mini3, which at $12 is about as cheap as it gets - easy to program, work with HomeAssistant. If you have a temperature sensor paired to HomeAssistant, then you can have full blown automation as well as remote control.
u/bowl_nugs_n_harmony · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I got this one on amazon and it works perfect and is half the price!

u/motARTion · 2 pointsr/vancouver

I got that exact unit a few weeks ago. It does that job very well. The one issue though is that even the highest fan speed isn't very forceful so you may have to make a fan chain to get the cool air in more awkward corners of your place.

Some additional notes is that for me the hoses weren't long enough at 8ish ft. Hose extension are not cheap. Additionally my specific window opening couldn't use the included mount so I snagged this: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B07CCMZ3FD/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526335183&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=home%2Bwindow%2Bseal&dpPl=1&dpID=51vhGdgSocL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

To significantly cut the smell, unless you are smoking a joint or blunt

To keep the area Fresh

and make sure to use these filters for the air purifier

The purifier takes 3 filters which is what is included in that filter pack i sent. The smoke ones are really good and have a carbon filter backing to them and last about 3 months. The ones that come with it are great for alergens but you might as well toss them if you are trying to get rid of smoke only.

Edit: There is also this Which goes with this. Now this might be overkill, but it will get rid of any smell you have period, cats, smoke, whatever.

u/hopethisworks_ · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I use this fan with this and have had really good results with it. The fan has been running like a champ for 3 months solid now and I don't have any problems with smell whatsoever.

u/Zachaweed · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I went with these fans and im very happy ...no wire nuts or electrical tape required, and there about the same price. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OXDAWY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Also if you are looking for a good light set up use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091HO0FY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is my build http://imgur.com/a/0gYxr

Happy Cake Day!

Red Velvet is my very favorite!

First heard about reddit during the Arbitrary Day from a former colleague. That got me hooked to exchanges, then into reddit slowly.

As far as needs? I kind of really just need Filters since my asthma and allergies are really bad and I use air purifiers all over my house.

Thanks for the contest!

Both Rutland and Quick-N-Bright offer products that do this job fairly well:

https://www.amazon.com/Quick-Brite-Fireplace-Creosote-Chemicals/dp/B0792JF8YQ

https://www.amazon.com/Rutland-Sweep-Soot-Remover-1-Pound/dp/B00120R4ZQ

Just be aware that you will never be able to remove all the soot. It is incredibly fine, and gets into nooks and crannies deeply. You can make it look good, but will never get it to a brand new appearance.

u/joshhooper7 · 2 pointsr/cigars

This is the fan I use and this is the timer it runs on also.

u/tech1337 · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I went with this and cut some off the roll to size. Double layered it over the intake vent for more light blocking. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GIZN0OI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_p-1gzbAVNB0F0
Taped the two layers together like so: http://imgur.com/YxFW3x2 then taped that over the tent intake.

I used one of these DC fans:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OXDAWY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

To avoid the exact issues you're working with. Plug and play.

I got two large-ish angle irons and drilled them as low as I could on the inside of the wooden collar, then zip-tied the fan on there, pointing down. Does the job and was super easy.

u/AutoGeek3000 · 1 pointr/shortcuts

Not sure a Nest will work with a window AC. I think you'd need something like this:

http://amzn.com/B07MTGD3D9

u/Thracka951 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I’m not normally a home automation guy, but I use Sensibo AC controllers (need to have the ability to use an IR remote control). It’s cut the cooling costs at my house by about $125/month so they already paid themselves off in 3 months.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MTGD3D9

Big fans help a lot when it comes to moving the air around and keeping the AC cycles efficient.
I have these and love them:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M0X1SOY

I also have applied heat blocking window film on my east and west facing windows that cook in the sun all day.

Beyond that, I’m constantly making insulation and air sealing improvements around the house.

Last year I was paying about $300/mo during the summer, now I’m down to about $150-175.

  • Those simple bear necessities

  • Filters! The owner where I work smokes in the office. I got a little air purifier thingy for my office, but I'll need replacement filters.

  • I have! I think only once so far under this account, but I also did a bunch from my previous account.
u/chinese-newspaper · 1 pointr/AskUK

yes, well at least you can get ones that work on casement windows. eg. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07C986TBQ

u/weensatrap · 1 pointr/DIY

Do a search for ductless or portable AC. There’s a bunch of units you can get in the $300-500 range. Target or Amazon... You could move it around the apartment with you from room to room and no need to open any windows or doors.
Might work for you ;)

I just finished my first pc grow, 19 grams after a week dry when it went into the jar, so with some LST you can easily make that 3.5 grams a month mark.

Yeah my case had a window too, I scuffed it a bit and painted the inside with black spray paint, and used that same reflective material. I painted the reflective material black as well before gluing it on. Paint didn't do that great on either piece but it turned out acceptable once they were glued together.

Fans, I used these and I mounted a power strip on the inside of the case, it runs those 2 fans 24/7 and a timer for my lights, which are CFLs plugged into a 2nd strip. They are really noisy, though no splicing needed and they move a lot of air. I'm in a humid environment and didn't want mold. I did use a less powerful PC fan spliced into a cell charger hung inside the case to blow on the plant when it was small to help strengthen the stem.

If that case is steel and not aluminum, you may look at using mylar instead of the windshield bubble wrap and mount stuff using magnets. I used the windshield stuff it's too thick, so I split it using a razor blade so it'd be thin enough that I could put magnets on the back of my power strips and stick them to the back panel. If it's aluminum you'll have to mount with zip ties of screws or something.

You're gonna want a light trap. I used this style I got some PVC/vinyl "outside corner molding" or "corner guard" from the local hardware store for mine and left it white instead of black. This was just on the front intake, the rear exhaust had a carbon filter taped over it.

For exhaust filter I used these the smoker ones have actual chunks of carbon in them, there's also lots of cheaper diy versions out there, but I found taping one of these over the exhaust to be easier. I used some regular black AC foam over the front behind the front face plate but in front of the intake fan.

Can't help with that light, may order one myself, just make sure when looking at LEDs that it's not too wide for the case. Also see where the plug comes into the back, you may loose a good bit of vertical room due to cord and mounting. I used CFLs that were plugged into a normal power strip that was stuck to the back wall with magnets and it worked well. I could raise and lower the lights easily, but could only get 3 23watt (100 equiv) bulbs in that one strip.

You'll also want a roll of reflective foil/hvac/duct tape to seal all the corners and whatnot.

That soil has a PH of 6.6 so it'll probably be great.

u/steamxgleam · 1 pointr/No_Asbestos

thanks for responding!

To clarify, sealing off rooms to create negative air pressure is necessary even if contamination has already occurred? I shouldn't just use the air scrubber without any kind of tube venting?

u/rubermnkey · 1 pointr/DIY_eJuice

Yah, I think I am going to get some PG when I decide on a stealth mod option. I have a little council of wraith squonk box that should fit the bill, but might order one of those little pod systems. Mix a high PG, high nic salt juice to limit cloud and maximize strength. Maybe even get one of those smoke buddies for extra stealth points.

I've just been trying to transition away from the throat hit as an extra step of removal from smoking cigs. It's been over a year now since I quit and honestly haven't thought of going back once, they smell so bad now, I can't really see how I smoked so long in the first place. All the same I want to train myself away from taking it back up as much as possible.

Would it be feasible to order 100 mg salt in 50/50 base and add flavor directly to it, could leave me with 80mg strength and about 70/30 pg/vg. Maybe get more 48 in PG, some 100 in vg and cut in the flavor to give me an 80/20 pg/vg mix and 60-70ish mg strength.

The iPower fans seem to be junk. Here's the one I bought: a 6" Hydrofarm, 400CFM (actually an ActiveAir brand fan). Much better than the 175 the ipower 6" was pushing.

It's loud at full blast, and probably more than you need. This is good though, because you can get a speed controller to turn it down. The fan gets much quieter even at 75%, and I run mine at less than 50% to cool my small cab w/aircooled 400w HPS. You can get this speed controller if you don't mind a slightly annoying electric hum from your fan (I have this and sleep in the room with it at night), or you could get the more expensive variac controller that eliminates this hum (and probably helps your fan last longer too).

The centrifugal inline fans are much more powerful than the axial booster fans, and will force air through a carbon filter easily, so get one that is sized correctly for the fan. (heres mine, sized for that hydrofarm/activeair fan)

I keep a steady 78º-79ºF in the cabinet (2.5'x1.5'x4' grow space) with 75º-77ºF ambient room temps, and the air exhausted right back into the room (central air keeping the room at 76ºF helps).

u/iwontrememberanyway · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter for the baby's room. It works for smoke, dust, mold and other allergens. A little white noise might help Baby sleep better, too. Something like this:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0067D7CKU/ref=psdc_3737401_t3_B00007E7RY.

u/WorseThanHipster · 1 pointr/MushroomGrowers

yes! You should use a desiccant. There's lots of literature out there in the shroom world about how to 'optimize' costs & 'refresh' certain kinds of desiccants but I use regular old DampRid. That $10 7.5lb jug would let you dry many pounds of mushrooms. Years worth if you're just going to use them for personal use. I poured about half a cup of it into a tubberwear, cut & shaped a small piece of screen to put over top of it (there won't be any contamination unless they actually touch) and put a lid on it, stick it in the fridge, the shrooms will be bone dry in a day or two.

Here's a picture of the setup. Note: this isn't the greatest example, this is the tail end of a final flush so lots of tiny guys, i put them in a lid to keep them from falling through the screen. But, that there is like $0.10 worth of screen material and $0.50 worth of desiccant, and I'll be able to dry a couple pounds of wet shrooms with it before I need to replace the desiccant.

Probably good. https://www.missionallergy.com/ is the most commonly-recommended. I also have their comforter.

I use Coway https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTKAPUU/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - it's won some awards, seems good. You can get aftermarket filters which are pretty affordable. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076JJ42V7/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1

Make sure to clean your prefilter routinely. It'll tell you when to replace your other filters.

I have a small studio (around 350 sq ft); I run https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MXDRTKJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 continuously and it'll cost me about $20/month - I'm able to get to the upper 30% relative humidity. After I've done this for a few months I might relax it a bit and target 45% or something since 35-40% is pretty dry.

Sorry for the delay, LMK if you have any other questions.

u/Mitten_Punch · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Having a little trouble picturing what you mean in the first paragraph. Could you link the video? Generally, you can use your main 4" inline exhaust to cool the hood, and exhaust air from the tent. The problem is that they you have to have it running whenever the lights are on. That's doable, but not ideal. Especially if you ever deal with lower humidity. Because the tent will constantly be pulling in fresh air. . .versus, what I was trying to explain:

One small duct fan, just for the light. Ducted so the air cooling the light never touches the air inside of the tent. This fan will run whenever the light is on (hook it to the timer, along with the cord for the light). The inline is the only fan that touches the air your plants live in. It only kicks on when the thermostat tells it to.

So, in answer to paragraph #2: You don't hook the controller to the duct fan. Duct fan is separate. And runs whenever the light is on. Thermostat only hooks to the exhaust.

For a tent your size, in an AC room, passive intake should be fine. Open a flap or two on the bottom of the tent, cut a piece of cut-to-fit furnace filter sized to let you close the flap, but leaves a bit open at the bottom. If this is confusing, it'll won't be once you get the tent. And you can get filter material for cheap anywhere. And you don't have to worry about light-proofing for many weeks.

There are lots of other ways to handle the intake. In veg, it's as simple as opening the vent. The filters help block light in flower. And keep smaller insects/spores/etc out. If your tent has circular inlets instead of the flaps/screens, no problem, run bit of ducting and tape the filter inside the duct.

Finally. . .venting outside the room. If you use "my" setup, you will have two ducts, one constantly cooling the hood, one intermittently exhausting the tent. A simple Y-connector (and maybe a 4" to 6" ducting adapter, if you go with the 4" fan) will let you merge the two for a single duct out the window.

It's all really hard to visualize just in text. I can show some pics of my setup, but it's a bit confusing right now because it's winter in New England. So I keep my light fans, and my veg exhaust, blowing into the room. Free heat. But if you think you still aren't "getting it", let me know. I'll try and get a visual for you.

edit: Have a grow shop nearby? I don't recommend buying everything from them (although I buy my fans and ballasts from local shops. . .because if those break, I can't wait several days for a replacement). But if you were to go in and ask about the best way to rig a 2x4 w/ CoolTube, they should tell you. And not force any kind of sale. The people in my shops are super helpful, and taught my 80% of what I know about growing. I stop by for fun at this point.
