I disagree. As a comedy nerd + writer, I have to chime in here. I hate this argument. It's not generational, it's the format.

The format SNL, weekly live show that is necessarily based on advertisements, is a poor format. You have to write quickly to produce that much material. Which isn't so bad, except you have such a wide audience and dependence on advertisement that you have to go for the common denominator EVERY TIME.

There are plenty of smaller groups who can do amazing weekly work, but that is because they can rely on their audience to be smart. The SNL audience is millions of people. Millions of people who the advertisers NEED to keep watching the show.

There are a ton of talented writers + performers that march through SNL. But overall it is mediocre comedy based on catch phrased characters. Even your example is a catch phrase.

For example,
Matt Foley character was first developed by Bob Odenkirk for another show. He was a fully fledged character, the way Odenkirk wrote him. (source: Here's The Kicker, http://www.amazon.com/Heres-Kicker-Conversations-Humor-Writers/dp/1582975051)

The first Matt Foley skit is true to that. He is a flawed being but with just enough humanity to keep our empathy.

Even in the second or third sketch the catchphrase is uttered immediately as Farley goes over the top and crashes through a coffee table to grab laughs in just the first minute.

It's a format that necessarily yields aggravatingly simple and base comedy.

Our Dumb World: The Onion's Atlas of the Planet Earth, 73rd Edition.

I swear this is the funniest thing I've ever read. Not only that, but it's an atlas. It covers every damn country. It's the best bathroom reading. Ever. Period. It's also a good ice breaker, although much of it is highly offensive. But seriously, I can't recommend this enough. Best $20 you'll ever spend.

From the Amazon page for the book

> From the internet mischief-maker who brought you the “Knock Knock Hijack”, in which he ran away with a friend’s Facebook joke to hilarious effect, and “Hotel Graffiti”, a series of peculiar messages hidden in hotel rooms around the world, comes “But... You’re a Horse”, a collection of pranks, anecdotes and gags that have nothing whatsoever to do with the cover of the book containing them.

On the other hand, it would probably be exactly what it looks like in the Bojack 'verse.

If you want to stick with English language sources, I think that learning about Yokai is a good place to start. I'm aware of one book called Yokai Attack that features a lot of the same yokai, but once you get started researching you'll quickly come across other thing. I find that the English language Wikipedia pages seem to be a bit lacking for the more obscure entries, but I think there is enough to get started.

You might like my dad's book - http://www.amazon.com/Politically-Correct-Bedtime-Stories-Garner/dp/0285640410 Cinderella's fairy godpersun turns her into an unrealistic barbie doll figure, prompting the men of the ball to a frat boy brawl for possession over her... The women confront her and keep her there past midnight, wherupon she "sighed and stretched and scratched her ribs... 'Kill me now if you want, sisters, but at least I'll die in comfort." They all shed their restrictive ball clothing in relief, and finding the men of the kingdom dead, take it over, dress them in their old gowns and tell the press it was a homophobic brawl, and set up a clothing co-op. Henceforth, Cinderwear™ was renowned throughout the land for its practical women's garments.... Seriously, it may pay for my college education, but this book is also fucking hilarious.

Books

  • Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. A great read that will forever fuel zombie conversations in the future.
  • World War Z by Max Brooks. A well done recount of the zombie war that nearly wiped humans off the planet.
  • Day By Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne. A compelling diary-style account from the beginning of a zombie apocalypse.
  • Beyond Exile by J. L. Bourne. A sequel that picks up right where Day By Day left off.
  • The Zombie Combat Manual by Roger Ma. Meh. Just a cash-in on Max Brooks' great work with the survival guide.
  • U.S. Army Zombie Combat Skills by 'Dept. of the Army'. Lame. About as fun to read as a roll of toilet paper.

>Gewichtheben

Get the Swoly Bible. Get Big. Problem Solved.

u/NotADamsel · 3 pointsr/Negareddit

Bigotry and Political Correctness are two different things. Bigotry is when you treat a person in a certain way (positive or negative) in whole or in part because of some trait that they cannot control. Political correctness is when you describe someone using language designed specifically to be inoffensive due to the lack of connotation. You can be a politically correct bigot who uses PC language to be an asshole, or a perfectly normal non-judgmental and non-bigoted person who doesn't care about the words that they use. One has to do with the actions that one takes, and the other has to do with language.

Let's break it down Disney-educational-video-style, in case you don't get what I'm trying to say.

This is Farmer Joe. Farmer Joe has recently suffered a string of losses. Let's hear what Farmer Joe has to say. "Them niggers are always stealing my watermelons". Oh, my, Farmer Joe! What you said... it sure sounds bigoted! Let's take a step back. Why does what Joe said sound so hateful? It's because of the word "nigger". You see, "nigger" means something other then just "black person", because of years and years of hateful use. Let's have Farmer Joe re-try that phrase, using this list of substitute words that mean similar things to the words that they are replacing, without carrying the same negative connotations. Farmer Joe- "Them persons of African descent are always stealing my watermelons." There, isn't that an improvement? It certainly sounds better when you don't use the word "nigger", now doesn't it? Well, that's incorrect. It shouldn't sound better, because Farmer Joe is still singling out an entire race of people because of their skin color, and calling them thieves. What should Farmer Joe actually say? Let's tell him. Farmer Joe, would you read this for us, please? Thank you. Farmer Joe- "Lots of my watermelons have been stolen recently." There, now Farmer Joe is saying the right thing. He is now only stating the pertinent facts, without including any language that hints at race.

Of course, it's not always possible to just state a fact without including racial or otherwise sensitive verbiage, because this is a complicated world. Let's meet with Mayor Paul. Mayor Paul, what is the thing that most threatens your city's security? Mayor Paul- "Black Gangs that rove the streets and cause property damage." Well, now, isn't that scary? Tell me, Mayor Paul, are there any non-black gangs that rove the streets and cause property damage? There are? Well, why did you say "black gangs". Oh, I see. It's because most of the black gangs are causing property damage, and only one non-black gang, a Latino gang, is engaging in similar behavior. You don't want to be a bigot, do you Mayor Paul? Of course not. You are simply stating fact, that it is specifically the black gangs causing a problem for some strange reason. Say, why don't you say it this way! Read from this sheet, Mayor! Mayor Paul- "The biggest problem is that gangs of racists are causing massive amounts of property damage." There, now you've stated the problem without singling one groups' race, as well as accused them of being bigots! It's not a perfect solution, but it's certainly politically correct!

The (sort of) Dark Mage By Nelson Chereta

The main character grew up in a society of Dark Mages and he lives according to that upbringing. The book has some dark undertones but it's much more dark humor than an actually grim world.

He's on a quest to obtain familiars (monster slaves) and prove himself to his dark society. Really I can't recommend this book enough it's a very fun read.

Ideally I want to be working as a performance analyst for a big rugby club, preferably in France. Toulon is the dream. That basically means I'll be looking at all the data the players collect over a match from GPS packs and then formulating how to better them when it comes to training.
