Play n Type Wireless Controller with Keypad for $38.03. I seriously don't like this controller, it looks terrible. Just get the official wireless keypad. It's like, what, $21 on Amazon? Here's the review of it, no such video demonstrating the actual typing though.

You can also check the third party controllers in Gamestop or Bestbuy like afterglow but I totally wouldn't recommend it. Like seriously. Shit's so bright even in daylight.

The PS2 came out in 2000, I think you're thinking of the PS1. Anyway, for a TV, you'll want to look for a PS3 Component video cable. Something like this. Monitors are iffy with old consoles.

That's composite, not component. Component cables have five RCA plugs (typically green, blue, and red for video, plus red and white for audio).

Yes, cheap unshielded composite cables often have a lot of audio buzz. Those cheap converter boxes are also garbage and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was causing problems as well.

The best solution would be to get a high quality component cable such as HD Retrovision's and a good component-to-HDMI converter like the RetroTINK-2X (supports 240p and 480i only), OSSC (supports all of the PS2's video modes), or Framemeister (supports all modes and has a really good deinterlacer for 480i). Cheaper converters will probably work, but won't process 240p games correctly and may have input latency or other issues.

Third party controllers are known to have more dead zone in the analog sticks. So I'd go the PS2 controller route if you need that precision.

They make the picture about 10x better.

If your TV doesn't have the traditional yellow/red/white composite input, you can buy a component cable for the PS3 (still on Amazon for now) and use that. The PS2 and PS3 use the same analog outputs. I can't imagine a modern TV not having at least component inputs.

What I am thinking is if its an older TV and you have tried all the L/R RCA connections, the TV might not be able to convert the digital signal into an analog audio out.

Next step would be to run audio outs from the PS3 to the amp. I haven't tried this in a while but you might be able to use the PS3 analog cords along with the HDMI. Multi AV out just has to be set on in the PS3 systems settings. If that's doesn't work you would need an optical cord to a digital to analog converter.

Just like with TV's, there are higher grades of computer monitors as well. Look for "graphics design" monitors. Some of these monitors will actually have BNC inputs as they are designed for industry use but do not be fooled, These monitors do NOT accept 15khz rgb ( aka 240p)

I have an "NEC MultiSync FP2141sb" which I love. It has dual inputs, full geometry controls, a "super bright" function I really enjoy and a built in usb hub that I use to power my component - vga adapter.

I belive this Sony FW900 is the holy grail of vga crt monitors.

edit: I grabbed a this Wii VGA cable and gutted the chip. I made my own little box with component inputs and VGA out. The chip they used is highly regarded and does a straight 1:1 conversion of component-VGA @ 480p and 720p.

You can step it up and rgb mod your n64. The hottest board even has a deblur function that helps clean up the image. The n64 in my experience does not scale nearly as well as other systems. Stick to Svideo unless you really love the system and will be putting a lot of time into it.

Psx and ps2 are much more simple. They both support rgb without a mod. Stick to YPbPr (component) on the ps2. It's nearly as good as rgb and much easier to get working. Get hd retrovisions ps2 cable. It's new and as good or better than the official cables. Official will run you as much or more and be used.

Personally speaking I'd recommend getting a component to HDMI converter (I use this one and it works great but there are plenty of other models to choose from if you want something else) paired with some nice quality component cables (either the official Sony PlayStation 3 ones since they work on the PS2, or the PS2 component cables sold by HDRetrovision), I went a couple of low quality third party ones before spending the extra money on the nicer cables, it's well worth it.

I should add that I forgot to mention that Sega Genesis needs to be modded for S-Video - if your friend can help you mod the monitor for RGB it'll be a breeze for him (it's soldering like 5 single wires and a couple resistors - pretty darn easy). ---OR at that point, if you are actually modding the monitor for RGB, you'll probably forget about the S-Video and just use a regular SCART RGB cable or whatnot.

Also, if it makes your choice easier, S-Video really is excellent quality. You really have to see both side-by-side to notice any difference compared to RGB (especially if you're still new to all this - it's really just the finer smaller differences you can notice between the two connection types).

You would have to find out of the early fat PS3s and check the model #.

The SG is about 25-30ms behind every other guitar I have, which is a lot.

It's playable, but fiddling with the calibration setting in between hitting the notes too early so they break on the strikeline, and hitting them at the correct time where they don't go past the hit window is annoying, and there's no reason to deal with that.

I've had this happen to me before. Usually there's a lot of dust built up inside and clogging the fans so it's struggling to cool it down when it can't. You can either get one of those air cans and spray from the front and side vents or open it up and thoroughly clean it.

When you're done cleaning, you can also invest in this. Helped me out a ton.

Are you trying to get it to work on your ASUS or a different monitor now?

Easy Answer:

Plug it into your ASUS and hold the power button down on the PS3 while powering up until it beeps for a second time(While the monitor is on of course). If you get flickering and no screen then it is time to fix the ASUS or get a new monitor.

 

Hard Answer 1; New Monitor:

HDMI to DVI conversion cable. Make sure your monitor is HDCP compatible otherwise it may not work. Also get yourself a composite cable for your PS3 as well because most monitors do not output sound through DVI.

That is if you get a monitor with no HDMI input, otherwise just do the same thing you did with your ASUS and the Easy Answer.

 

Hard Answer 2; Fix the ASUS:

99% of the time when a monitor fails like you say, it is because of blown capacitors. That other 1% is factory defects and user stupidity. But from what you describe it sounds like one or a few of the secondary smoothing capacitors have failed.

If you feel comfortable about it you can take the back off the monitor and check the power supply unit for any inflated capacitors. They look like this when blown(the green ones in the pictures).

I used that guide for that exact monitor so I would suggest that you look up your model and seeing if there have been the same issues with other people.

Or just take it to a repair shop.

In the future, when you get better speakers, you can use a A/V receiver with HDMI.

You don't need a DAC, the PS3 has a DAC inside it, which is why you can have RCA outputs.

For now, with these speakers, just use one of these: http://amzn.com/B003U7WCEM Connect that to the RCA/3.5 adapter, to the speakers.

I'm 90% sure the subwoofer in this setup includes a crossover, so if you just plug in the front speakers, it should automatically send the bass to the subwoofer.

If it doesn't, then you'd need to add your own passive crossover, which isn't feasible. If the RCA outputs don't work for you, I'd start looking at the side bar to the right for some cheap 2.1 systems you could put together. (All of which would be significantly better than this Creative system.)

Just direct from the console to the monitor, nothing between.

They aren't of the highest quality, but are dead simple and cheap.

A dedicated transcoder as described by /u/syboxez would be better solution, especially if you think you'll want to possibly use other 480p+ Component sources on the monitor, but if you're just looking to use the Wii on it, the cable -should- be good enough for your purposes.

You can get a converter box. There are also PS3 mouse controllers like the Splitfish and Aimon brands. I tried the Aimon one and it works well once you configure it, but I hated the button layout on the left hand 'nunchuk' and the responsiveness of the shape buttons on the mouse, so I returned it.

Here's an Amazon link for a PS2 to USB adapter. This doesn't answer your question (I'm not sure if soldering alone could produce the same effect), but it's an easy and cheap option.

For the controller I would recommend getting one of these bad boys. For the slow laptop problem I really can't say anything. You might be able to do some testing with the emulator and see what you can run. If you really like playing all the old games it might be better to invest in a gaming computer so you can run all the amazing emulators out there.
Here is a list of the emulators they have and yes they even go as far as the last gen consoles and current gen nintendo console (x360, ps3 and wiiU). If you want any help with getting started just toss me a message or comment reply(either for emulators you might be able to run or building a pc I'm down for either.

• Sony DualShock 2 controller (I have plenty of my old ones from PS2, still mint condition, that I use. Probably hard to find these new, but possible with eBay and Amazon. If you have some of your own of these, you're halfway there.)
  
  
• DualShock2-to-USB Adapter (Amazon Examples: [1], [2], [3].. these create a DirectInput gamepad on your PC, not Xinput (Xbox 360/One gamepad), so while great for emulators and PC games that have customizable controls, they won't work for newer PC/Steam games that assume you're using a 360 gamepad.
  
  The adapter will also work with the Sony PlayStation 1 original gamepad and DualShock 1.
  
  Also... if you have a SNES gamepad, here's an adapter for that. (But I find the extra L2/R2, analog sticks and their L3/R3 buttons are useful for other emulation buttons such as speed-up, save state, load state, etc).

I use a xbox 360 converter to PS4 for my arcade stick for fighting games and they work flawlessly. You just need to update the firmware whenever xbox1 has an update, takes 2 minutes.

What you need is a high quality component cable, that alone will drastically improve the quality. The supreme solution is to combine a high quality component cable with a converter such as the OSSC to get a hdmi output. But these are on the pricey side but are amazing. So I'd get the cable first see if that's enough for you then go from there if you want to go the whole way.

If your TV does indeed do 1024x768 then you should be fine with it.

You should be fine at standard-defintion resolutions (480 vertical pixels) using the yellow (composite) cable that comes with the console, but a component cable should give a sharper picture even on standard-definition (depending on your TV and the quality of your eyesight) and will take full advantage of the resolution of a 1024x768 telly.

Unfortunately for you, you have the Elgato HD60 which only has HDMI inputs. A casual search yields nothing for me as far as converting Component to HDMI, and I doubt a reliable one exists that is inexpensive. The standard Elgato HD comes with a Component input cable for use with older consoles.

Yes, 5 prong (2 audio, 3 video) is called component. You can get component cables for everything ps2 and beyond, and you can get s-video for everything snes and beyond. The gamecube component cable is ridiculously expensive and requires an earlier model gamecube, but the s-video cable is easy to get (ebay and amazon have them; just remember that snes, n64 and gamecube use the same cable). Ps2 component is easy to get - amazon has the official one for 18ish and monoprice has theirs for 4.50

The PS3 should hook up to the TV just fine. 720p/1080i will look good on a TV that size. The TV looks to be 4:3 so you should get the bars. I think the PS3 comes with standard RCA cables so you might need to purchase some component cables as well.

Looking to get a new S-Video cable for my PS2 and PS3. I don't know what will work with both, but I'm fairly confident the UK seller is the most trustworthy seller (the other ones have their prices jacked up and the one that matches only has 4 reviews which are likely fake). I haven't tested it for RetroPie (or even Linux for that matter), but I've been using this adapter from McBazel on my PC for PCSX2 and Clone Hero, and it's worked pretty much flawlessly so far. I have one of these and it works like a charm combined with a DVI-HDMI adapter like the one you mentioned. However it seems like the video distortion would be an issue with your monitor.

Alternatively I used to use this to connect via VGA along with an RCA-3.5mm adapter, but it was only half that price when i bought it. It has bad reviews, but that's because some monitors don't seem to agree with it, and it requires a TV to set up with a Wii. The Wii U can use it just fine, and in HD as well. You don't even need a TV to set it up since you set video settings via the gamepad. I however stopped using mine since it was just a tad too blurry for me. Not awful by any means, but I knew it could be better.

I bought one of these for the PS3. It works well, but I still prefer the controller on the PS3. Plus, you can't switch between this and a regular controller without pausing, disconnecting, reconnecting the other device like you can on PC.

There are third party accessories that allow keyboard and mouse control over consoles. I don't know if they're banned at the competitive level, but I imagine that people use them.

The debate shouldn't be about console vs PC as PS3 does support keyboard and mouse combo provided the developer has added the code for the same. I think Unreal Tournament and CS:GO support them from what I have heard and then there are peripherals like this and this for people who are more comfortable with a mouse.

Have you seen this or this? I haven't tried them personally, but have actually heard some good things about both. Obviously it's not a perfect substitute, though.

I know for a fact there is a way to do this though iirc the article about it said you would probably get better results with a controller since the PS3 version is designed for use with a gamepad. I'll see if I can dig up that article, if I can I'll edit this and post the link.

I highly doubt (in fact I'm almost positive) that next-gen console owners won't be able to play games with them without 3rd party hardware and software. Adding a feature like accepting a keyboard and mouse as a controller would make it unfair for the other console players who use and are used to controllers. It would be a terrible move by either Microsoft or Sony, therefore they won't do it.

The manual doesn't really say what "full screen" is (i.e. whether it stretches a 4:3 image to 16:9, or something), so it's hard to say, just from seeing the manual.

Still, you'll need to buy some kind of conversion hardware. Something like this will probably have some conversion lag, but that really can't be helped without going for some pretty expensive hardware.

The Playstation can also do component and s-video output, I believe just with the appropriate cables, and then the appropriate conversion box. It wouldn't help with lag, but component and S-video both provide a clearer signal than composite does.

You can make your problem 999x easier if you go with the PC route. Also, if you miss the nostalgia and really want to play with a ps2 controller buy this, it's what I use and it's compatible with ps1, ps2, and ps3 controllers. I'm using a PS1 right now on it and it works flawlessly. This way, you can use a ps controller on your PC while playing kh2fm. I'm pretty nostalgic myself, but I believe you only need 60 fps on the game to run which isn't much firepower required for most pcs these days.

I wouldn't use the RCA cables for the PS2. It will be playing 480i on your monitor and text might be difficult or impossible to read. I remember trying to play PS2 on a 42" TV using RCA and I could hardly read anything. Switching to component allowed everything to be readable though.

I suggest getting a scart to component cable and then a component to HDMI adapter. Note that even though the scart to component cable is for the PS3, it will still work on the PS2.

Using component will allow you to play your games on 480p instead of 480i. That way, you will be able to read any text in games.

I actually had this problem the other day! As you may know, the menus of most ps1 games are at 480p, but the game itself is at 240p, a resolution so unusual most TV's just ignore it. Over composite (also referred to as AV, RCA, and a million other names), it doesn't really care though.

I don't think think having to use yellow video in for psx games is satisfactory when they were working with composite before. I'll try the upscaler.

I'm not just getting into them. I've played them on my ps2 for 18 years. :) Most of the time through composite (YPbPr), which my old tv supported (and all psx games worked like that).

If you get a stick for under $100, at the very least make sure it's easily modiable. I don't know much Xbox arcade sticks but I usually recomend a Qanba Drone but since you're on Xbox you'll have to use a Converter. There is also a Evo edition with Sanwa parts already installed

And finally there is the elite controller. It's got great buttons, absolutely not worth the 150 price tag. Find it on sale, then it's totally worth it!

Audio buzzing is almost always cheap cables. Either try to find some OEM component cables, or some other nice grounded/isolated ones like HD Retrovision's.

Those two are junk compared to HD Retrovision cables.

HDR is more expensive, but are the highest quality cables you can get for PS2.

Well the official Sony component cables are going for $80, so I don't really see how $20 is 'overpriced'. They were the only cables around that price that I could find that gave perfect image quality.

You can try this but I prefer a controller, so I couldn't tell you if it's any good. The reviews are pretty solid though.

I've been using a keyboard and mouse to pwn PS3 controller players for years now. I couldn't help myself.
