I mostly take what you expect: a portable charger, calling cards (assuming I have to call internationally), credit card and cash, essentials (makeup/hygiene care/hair products/etc), a good pair of sneakers and my favorite heels, etc.

If you're going somewhere with the intent of swimming then a full body swimsuit is necessary in my books. Regardless of how much sunscreen I use I will end up like a tomato without one. This is the one I bought. I got my first one last summer and got six uses out of it with no complaints. I'll probably buy another one this year to be on the safe side but the quality is great (especially for the price). I think it's cute, a lot cuter than many "regular" suits, and it's definitely comfortable.

Other useful items I try to bring:

  • Soap Sheets: They dissolve with a bit of water and come in handy for laundry. No TSA worries here!

  • A bra stash: I would've never personally bought this for myself, at least not initially, but it was a brilliant gift from my mother when I went away to school. There's a slew of reasons why you may not want to carry a purse or wallet. This will be your saving grace. It's not like the majority of us haven't done this anyway....

  • Compression Socks: Long flights will typically cause your extremities to swell up but no more! This is a serious, serious lifesaver on long trips. I learned this the hard way on my flight to Japan.

  • Probiotics: I know that sounds crazy. I KNOW. However, I've never gotten sick from a flight OR experienced much jetleg while having these in rotation five days prior to flying, during, and after. Worth it.

  • Diva Cup: You should be using these anyway during menstruation, but if you aren't, then while traveling is a great way to start. You won't have to worry about pads or tampons anymore. It's also a lot healthier and easier!

So first and foremost it’s cool to talk about that stuff. I think it’s valuable and important. I wouldn’t worry too much about how she’ll feel about it, let’s focus on the delivery and also some aspects neither of you many know about.

  1. You BOTH should drink more water. It helps with bodily fluids and is also just good for you! A good way to start is by having a big glass of water first thing when you wake up. You’ll find yourself after a few days of doing this WANTING more water. It’s weird, but true.

  2. The pH level in a vagina is really important to keep balanced. It’s meant to be at a high acidity which is why sometimes you’ll get a weird coppery taste when eating a woman out. It’s meant to be acidic in order to keep it clean, so it’s naturally going to be somewhat bitter to the taste buds. With that being said, creams and soaps can throw off the pH balance and make the vagina itchy, dry, and very uncomfortable. Instead, try these things:

    • Recommend a probiotic for vaginal health.

Renew Life Women's Probiotic - Ultimate Flora Women's Care, Probiotic Supplement - Gluten, Dairy & Soy Free - 90 Billion CFU - 30 Vegetarian Capsules https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CCCNISU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WkYSDbYG7PWY4

    • Use a flavored water-based lube. Put some on her, and go to town! It will help with the acidic taste and smell as well.

Wet Lube 1oz Sampler Assortment Bundle (Warming Fun Flavors 5 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TBBB15Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JlYSDb6BFT3FW

    • Is she on birth control? Some forms of bc will mess with ones hormones more than others - worth looking into!

    • Does she use tampons? Make sure she’s using ones with organic cotton. Chemicals found in specific tampon brands can mess with the pH balance as well which can cause odors.

Cora Organic Cotton Tampons with BPA-Free Plastic Compact Applicator; Chlorine & Toxin Free - Variety Pack - Regular/Super (36) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZYRXLNV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_HmYSDbZSY7YY0

  3. Please understand that while she may have some odors and tastes that aren’t the most desirable, you may have to be open to the fact that SHE may have dealt with some odors and tastes from you too. :) Be open minded and discuss with her that you just want to make your sex life as enjoyable as possible for BOTH of you.

    Good luck! 💦

Probiotics have really helped me. I really like [this] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002NL165W/ref=pd_aw_sims_3?pi=SL500_SS115) brand

u/DejaElectra · 6 pointsr/SexWorkersOnly

No problem! Always happy to help.

I take Renew Life Women's Probiotic - Ultimate Flora Women's Care, 90 Billion CFU I get it off amazon and it's "shelf-stable" so it doesn't need to be refrigerated. This stuff has changed my life, my skin cleared up and my stomach problems are basically gone and I have an immune system of steel, it also helps keep the lady bits healthy. If that one is too pricy they have a similar one with fewer cultures and strains +click here+ I used to take that but I'd say "upgrading" was totally worth it!

Let me know if you want any more info :) stay healthy and happy!

u/MeatCat88 · 6 pointsr/PCOS

Hey, Have you tried probiotics? I haven't gotten a yeast infection in 4 years and the only corrolation I can think of is that I've been more diligent with my gut health. I take 'Ultimate flora' by renew life ( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000CMKC5Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A88P3ECUQ97WW&psc=1 ) also lots of fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut. I really really love probiotics.

u/PapaDisc · 6 pointsr/Candida

Absolutely not (and I am a daily consumer). I take 1-2 tbl/day.

Agyria come about mostly with people who work in the silver industry and get relatively large (> 100 microns) silver particles lodged in the skin. Colloidal sliver particles are less than 100 microns in size. Just drink plenty of water during the day.

The poster boy for agyria (who died recently, btw) was an early adopter who has his own colloidal silver making machine. He took shortcuts which generated non-colloidal silver, and he took lots of it over a long period of time. Ooops. Blue Man

The main problem you'll see is that colloidal silver is a very effective anti-microbial that kills off a lot of bad stuff, fast. As a result, whatever problems you are trying to solve will get worse for a while as you suffer the die-off reactions. Depending on how sick you are, this can be considerable.

When you take it, hold it in your mouth and swish it around before swallowing. That will help your dental health by killing off bad mouth bugs, and allow some of it to be absorbed directly into the blood stream.

But silver in the gut, while it will kill bad gut microbes, can also affect the good gut microbes.

So get some good pre/probiotics. Here is one I recommend (no connection with the company). This one is a game changer in that it attacks bad gut bugs, and supplies you with good gut bugs.

.Dr Tobias Deep Immune

good luck!

Like any "treatment" that people use to deal with IBS, everyone's reaction is different. Everyone's IBS is different. Probiotics have helped a lot of people, including myself, but it also doesn't for a lot of people. Probiotics also take a lot of trial and error. There are so many brands and strains out there. Personally, Align did nothing for me but these made a huge difference. IBS is not a definitive diagnosis, it's just what doctors call it when they have ruled out everything else.

Some probiotics have PRE-biotics in them (bacteria food) and can feed the good bacteria (and yeast) in the probiotics or the bad bacteria (and yeast) possibly already in your gut. There are different types of pre-biotics, some that are more likely to be fermented (form gas) than others and some that are more likely to feed the good guys or the bad guys.

I've been sensitive to pre-biotics for awhile now, but recently found the probiotic Seed to actually have non-fermentable pre-biotics and I don't get any reaction from them, while still feeding the good bacteria.

So pay attention to the type of probiotics your taking and also the type of prebiotics in there. And you can find some without any prebiotics as well.

Edit:

Some probiotics I've found w/o probiotics:

Saccharomyces Boulardii (good yeast)

A blend of hearty spore-forming beneficial bacteria

Powders & capsules of more traditional prebiotics (Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species)

u/RomeoStevens · 4 pointsr/Health

Which strain?
My first guess would be Clostridium butyricum, which is a popular probiotic in asian countries. I found this one, which I guess I'll try. Would be nice to know more.

u/pammylorel · 4 pointsr/ibs

:My biggest travel triggers are eating rich foods and not enough fluid intake. I guess it depends if you are C, D or M. I was 20 years C and always took daily Miralax and drank tons of water. Now I'm M. I have 2 weeks in Hawaii coming up and plan on waking the tightrope using Immodium, tiny doses of Dulcolax, and I've recently started Metamucil wafers, half dose in AM and other half in PM. I also am a mmj patient which helps pain. Also, staying away from the normal food triggers is more difficult when you're living in a hotel but don't take chances, stick to what you know is safe. I use the following probiotic which does not require refrigeration. https://www.amazon.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-Pearls-Intensive-Probiotics/dp/B002NL165W/ref=pd_sim_121_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=TTC54RZ6N1C0ZR71BCEW

u/rosuoammdo · 3 pointsr/ibs

Don't rule out probiotics just yet.

> I recently tried these probiotics from Amazon

These are probably not the greatest choice. You want something with research proving its efficacy. The wrong strains in the wrong amounts can and will make things worse. A similar probiotic actually sent me straight from moderate IBS-C to relentless D.

> but I got severe stomach cramps (higher up, seemingly around my stomach), bloating and nausea after just a couple of days.

Even with the right probiotic, this is to be expected. You don't change the composition of your microbiome overnight and unsurprisingly most trials show an initial aggravation of symptoms before relief.

So which probiotic should you take? The strain with the most research into its efficacy is B. infantis 35624, which is only available through Align. I recommend you give that a shot for at least a few weeks.

u/SpaceStationEarth · 3 pointsr/keto

I'll third this comment. Whole Psyllium Husk makes you nice and regular...almost life changing and I'm not exaggerating. It's also good to take with water about 30 minutes before a meal to fill you up before you eat. Though a word of warning, it swells in water...great for filling up your stomach but if you let it sit it will swell up before you drink it and then you'll have to eat it like cream of wheat.

I recommend working your way up from 1 tablespoons to 2 then to 3...if you increase the dose too fast, your body biome won't acclimate properly and you'll get loose shits and instead of nice logs. The cheapest I've found is the Now Whole Psyllium Husk on Amazon.

I also use the Now Probiotic.. I'm now very regular with a good BM or two everyday and no more IBS or hemorrhoids.

u/kilroy123 · 3 pointsr/Fitness

Lots of things. Taking good probiotics, the ones that don't need to be refrigeratorated are best. Eating lots of fermented foods. Eating lots of veggies raw.

I take these: http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Formulas-Dr-Ohhiras-Probiotics-Original/dp/B00141B7SS

u/samus-aran · 3 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I second the use of Candida Support it is not strong enough to kill yeart but it weakens it so your body can control it. You should also use consentrated probiotic pills Probiotis each pill has 10 different bacteria from 3 different family's of bacteria. Acidophilus alone wont cut it. Finally Stop eating Kefir and Kombucha, at least for the time being. Both are SCOBY's , Symbiotic cultures of Bacteria and Yeast. Your pumping you system with more yeast. Finaly help your system expel the weakend yeast enzymes yeast make sticky biofilms to protect the colonies. These Enzymes will help break them down so the candida support and probiotics can do there jobs.

I picked up this one because it got very well reviewed and I was desperate. Things starting getting much better for me within a few weeks of taking this daily. Correlation doesn't prove causation obviously so take this anecdote for what it's worth and do your own research.

I think similar products can be had cheaper, but I've been quite happy with this for well over a year.

u/PepeTheElder · 3 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

Well n=1 and all but after getting absolutely destroyed by multiple rounds antibiotics I realized after trying various drugs and supplements that my low energy and mood was low serotonin and that research was suggesting gut bacteria was a factor and started taking this stuff which I buy at local grocery stores and I started improving much more rapidly than I had been. The product quotes the 95% number as coming from the APA but that’s not where I saw it. They also claim a couple of the strains are shown to increase levels. You’re welcome to chase down the studies if you want but I already know it works, I’m not going to bother chasing them down again.

Everidis :) It's working pretty well for us - started him on it at about 2 weeks or so, he's 6 months now.

u/capitan_jackie · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

First I agree with everyone here that you should confirm that you indeed have a UTI and its not something else. That said I used to get recurrent UTI's and there was a point I had a standing prescription for antibiotics. It was the worst - what helped me was this probiotic and of course keeping up with the Azo cranberry. Havent had one in like 4 years phew. Again do not take antibiotics at will and without supervision - antibiotic drug resistance is a real danger. Also cleaning up my diet helped. Hope you feel better!

u/MaximilianKohler · 2 pointsr/Microbiome

Your gut flora may never recover. The answers by others are not supported by the science. [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7].

You could try a variety of probiotics and prebiotics. https://www.reddit.com/r/Microbiome/comments/3tidzx/recommend_probiotic_brand/cx6jc0e

I would recommend starting with these: Reuteri Pearls, plus culturelle , plus align, plus Bimuno.

u/plobo4 · 2 pointsr/CrohnsDisease

Saccharomyces Boulardii has been a god send for me. I've been taking it for 3 years now and I'm basically symptom free. I would definitely give it a shot. You can order it straight off amazon.

u/starstough · 2 pointsr/Hypothyroidism

This is what I take every day:

  • Zinc

  • Iron

  • B-complex

  • Hyperbiotics Probiotics

  • Magnesium citrate

  • Selenium (This is to lower my antibodies, which were nearly 600 at one point, and are down to under 150 now after several months on Selenium. I will stop taking selenium when the bottle runs out which I think will have been 6 months.)

  • Omega fatty acids

  • D3 5000iu

As far as I know, based on the research that I did on these, this brand and these formulations are easiest to absorb.

I also take 2.25 grain Nature Throid, at night, 4 hours after my dinner.

In the past two weeks I've actually felt better than I have in years. I notice right away if I forget to take my vitamins or if I run out of one of them and miss just one of all those, it definitely is noticeable as well. I added magnesium in the past week and it has been incredibly encouraging how much more energy I've had on magnesium. But whatever you do, DO NOT get magnesium powder. It is absolutely disgusting. I'm usually able to choke down things if I know they're good for me, but magnesium powder is supposed to be mixed in liquid. Well... it clumps... and turns juice brownish green... and it tastes like poison... So ... get the caps lol

I hope you get results soon.

One thing I was thinking about with Hashi's is that absence of antibodies doesn't always mean no Hashi's. I mean, if my antibodies went all the way away due to treatment, that doesn't take away the diagnosis, and doesn't mean that I am "cured". It would just mean my Hashi's wasn't active.

This doesn't mean that if your ultrasound comes back normal and your full thyroid panel comes back fine that you should act as though you do have Hashi's, just that, it can't be ruled out just because at the moment your antibodies were low. But I really think that the Celiac thing is worth thinking about. Despite medicating hypothyroidism, the vast majority of my pretty recent recovery came after removing gluten and soy from my diet.

    Good luck!

yes antibiotics can really mess up your system than what issues you had before taking them. And can i ask what made you need to take antibiotics for? and it will mess up your gut heath you need to rebuild the good gut bacteria you can start with pre and probiotics and other good gut heath foods and when you eat gluten foods what happens to you? also either when you wake up or just in the day is your tongue covered in white stuff? also if you can try to stay away from foods and things that have high fructose corn syrup and carrageenan in them here is a few things to help get you started

I might be giving you advice you already have, but also cut out sugar as much as you can, take a probiotic, and use boric acid suppositories.

I take a probiotic every night (I use this one and double up every time I go overboard on sugar) and boric acid every time i feel a little irritated. I had recurrent yeast infections for 5 years and I'm still convinced it messed me up permanently.

u/DesertBreeze · 2 pointsr/sex

Has she ever tried a change in diet (low carb/low sugar) and/or probiotics?

As for probiotics, a cheaper option are these two (they are the same brand--the difference is the first one does not have to be refigerated):

http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Way-Primadophilus-Reuteri-Pearls/dp/B000O3GCSW/ref=sr_1_11?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1414977958&sr=1-11&keywords=natures+way+probiotics

and more expensive ones that are popular:

http://www.amazon.com/Renew-Life-Ultimate-Vaginal-Formula/dp/B0042KULCG/ref=sr_1_6?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1414978305&sr=1-6&keywords=ultimate+flora+probiotics

There are reviews there that say it cured their yeast problems.

If she is willing to try the probiotics, you should couch PIV sex for maybe a month or two and see how she is feeling on the probiotics.

If she is able to receive oral or be stimulated with your fingers (not in her vagina) without pain, then maybe ask her if you both can concentrate on each other through oral and manual stimulation while hopefully the probiotics help start to keep the yeast at bay (hopefully it will work).

The fact she can't enjoy PIV probably lowers her sex drive so maybe if you can both concentrate on pleasing each other in other ways, her libido might start coming back again.

But in the end, you would be justified in ending the relationship so that you can find a partner you can have sex with.

If you smoke, quit smoking.

Maybe try to find a dentist with a payment plan?

Are you sure it isn't your tonsils? I used to have very bad breath (read: rotting smell) and it was because I had tonsil stones. I had my tonsils removed (I was on medicaid at the time to pay for it) and my breath improved dramatically. Before I had them removed before I was on medicaid, I would irrigate my tonsils using an oral irrigator syringe filled with hydrogen peroxide, but let me warn you that you need to be careful doing this as you don't want to make yourself bleed too much, and the peroxide feels pretty terrible on your tonsils (it doesn't hurt, it is just irritating to have something bubbling there).

I would also suggest BLIS-K12 lozenges. They contain a special kind of bacteria which produces this chemical that helps keep bad bacteria in check. These are the ones I use to this day, right after burshing and flossing http://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Oralbiotic-Blis-60-Count/dp/B003P7YVTQ

My IBS primarily manifests with fatigue / brain fog symptoms - or at least, that's the symptom that's most difficult to manage. For example, where a medium amount of an unsafe food will cause digestive symptoms, a much smaller amount can cause brain fog to an extent that interferes significantly with work and personal life.

I've found the best way for me to manage this is by consuming a very low fiber and near-zero-sugar diet - based originally on the low-FODMAP diet, but much more strict. I am able to eat many complex carbs, most commonly potatoes and rice (white or quick-cook brown). This requires cooking nearly all of my meals, and being extremely careful about what I eat at restaurants - asking a lot of questions.

I depend heavily on lactase enzyme for any dairy-containing foods, as well as alpha-galactosidase for breaking down traces of garlic or onion as well as small amounts of select vegetables.

I do find that I am slightly more able to tolerate fiber and sugar in the evening, but only because the fatigue they generate happens while I am asleep, and thus affects me less. (Too much will still give me fatigue and even hangover-like symptoms the next morning, though.)

Probiotics are hit or miss. While many seem to help with digestion, none seem to have made much difference in terms of brain fog, and a few have made that worse. Currently taking AOR-3 with no negative effect -

Probiotics are frequently taken by people who have IBD, and I've taken quite a few. Dr. Ohhira's is well-regarded from everything I've read over the years and it's part of my my go-to regimen when I start to have symptoms or when someone in my family takes antibiotics.

If you also want to consume yogurt, you could try it in conjunction with a capsule probiotic, then go dairy-free if you prefer when your innards are feeling better.

u/Raewynrh · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

Acidophilus is just one strain of beneficial bacteria. You can get a cheap probiotic at walmart with one or two strains but I buy Dr. Ohiras online. It has 14 live strains in reasonable amounts. Some people like to blast their bodies with probiotic but your body doesn't need 25 billion probiotics so the rest get flushed out anyway. I used to have yeast infections and thrush all the time and probiotics are the only thing that helped long term. The single strain cheapies really didn't do much for me.

These run 50 cents a day but are well worth not having the itchies down below! Plus your baby will be born with ultra healthy flora!

All the basics that help people stay regular. Eat a salad for lunch, the insoluble fiber will help with your constipation and as a benefit will keep your blood sugar stable and reduce your cravings for snacks in the afternoon.

You can try taking a probiotic, this is the one I'm using.

But you know what has seemed to really help eliminate my constipation problem, I mean totally eliminate it? Magnesium.

Not only are my poops no longer hard but they are many times actually soft. I recently decided I didn't like the direction my health was headed, got my blood work done and found I was pre-diabetic and had slight anemia. So I started hitting the gym nearly every day, eating way better, and supplementing. I did some research for supplements backed by science. The list I came up with was this:

Creatine Monohydrate

Magnesium (L-Threonate is supposedly better able to cross the blood-brain barrier)

Vitamin D3

I've been taking all of this stuff for about two months now and between that, the better diet, and working out my energy levels are much higher, my strength is already improving a lot, and my poops are not hard anymore.

Right now I'm on a low dose of Suboxone, 2mg/day, so I'm sure that helps. After being on this drug for 11 years I'm a big believer in being on the lowest dose you can be comfortable on.

I don't want to get too off topic but this channel has been so helpful to me for to start improving my health that I'm going to link to the supplements video in case anyone else here finds it useful:

I've had symptoms for the past year or so ever time I would eat. I couldn't really figure out what foods were causing it because it would be random. I started taking a probiotic supplement, and in about 3 weeks of taking one every morning, I noticed my stomach wasn't bothering me as much. It's already been another 3 weeks and I haven't felt any irritation. This is the one I take https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Probiotic-10-Billion-Vcaps/dp/B0031RJXCK?th=1

Exercise has been a godsend for me. I used to live in a place where I could easily surf and hike and after moving I found the normal gym thing unappealing and sort of boring. Not sure why it is so easy now but probably has to do with how great it makes me feel. :) The cardio in particular brings such a rush and calming zen state.

I always liked the green powder drinks. My fave is this one called "Capra Greens" by Mount Capra. Goat Whey with lots of minerals and tastes way better than any other I've tried. Awesome in smoothies. If you want to experiment with any probiotics, a few basic ones are the "pearls" https://www.amazon.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-Pearls-Intensive-Probiotics/dp/B002NL165W/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_121_tr_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XFWXX2D5MHE9D06FF2CJ

and Jarro-dophilus. They are a great company:
https://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Jarro-Dophilus-Supports-Intestinal/dp/B00028NV2E/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1524554221&sr=8-3&keywords=jarro-dophilus&dpID=51xngr4HSVL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

You probably know about the cardio stuff of target heart rate. It's based on your resting heart rate, age, and such. I sometimes only speed walk / run for 20 minutes at the gym but that's more than enough to bring all that happy juice. :)

Wishing you the best, friend!

I linked both probiotics and vitamin D which I use. For vitamin D, just place 2-4 drops per day under tongue. For probiotics, take one per day 30 minutes before meal. For me, I still think the probiotics was the one that made a difference. Also, I'm trying this new thing with oil pulling with coconut oil. Some people say it has antibacterial properties which can kill bacteria in the mouth and prevents the GI from further infection. I doubt it will make a huge difference, but it's just something else to try.

There are many available in pill form. I've had them prescribed after going through an antibiotic treatment, since they kill beneficial bacteria as well as dangerous bacteria.

Right now, I'm taking this one daily, for the next month.

u/orchideae · 1 pointr/ibs

yes, since you already have your diet sorted, I'd supplement with probiotics to help recolonize your digestive tract. as /u/TheColonWars said, lactic acid bacteria is what's supposed to be there, so I'd be making your own 24hr yogurt (or other fermented foods), drinking kombucha, maybe adding in some lactobacillus supplements like this? also, keep us/me updated!! I'm going to get tested for SIBO, as I'm pretty sure my gluten intolerance caused it..and want to know how you feel after stopping the antibiotics.

u/AlexTakeTwo · 1 pointr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I’m two months into a probiotic from RenewLife and I really like it. On my second month I switched to their “women’s” formula and it seems a little more improved than the regular one. I have some pretty weird GI issues anyway, but the probiotic has definitely helped my digestive system feel more “normal” than it has for a while.

RenewLife is easy to find either online, at Whole Foods, or I saw them at a Kroger store the other day. I order mine from Amazon, they don’t require refrigeration but I do once I open the bottle. This is the one I use and like. I put it on Subscribe & Save for extra convenience.

u/sizlack · 1 pointr/benzorecovery

Yeah, there is evidence that gut bacteria can affect mood. I feel like when I got my gut right, it helped my mood a lot. Maybe just because I wasn't in pain so much or maybe because I had beneficial bacteria, I don't know. I don't think you can do irreversible damage to your gut bacteria. Maybe you're not taking the right probiotic for you. There are a lot of different types of gut bacteria. It also might not be the bacteria making you sick, it could be some other additive in the pill. I think this is really more likely. Probiotics don't act that quickly. And there can be binding agents in some medication that can exacerbate irritable bowel syndrome. Take a look at the label and do some googling on what you find.

But for my mood, I did some research on which bacteria to get and found that (I think) L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri might produce GABA, so I take them daily. I take a combination of Culturelle (which has a good mix) and L. reuteri on it's own:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000O3GCSW/ref=sr_ph_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492481250&sr=sr-1&keywords=reuteri

I also got a SIBO test and found that I had bacterial overgrowth in my small intestine. I took a specific antibiotic that only works in the small intestine (where you're not supposed to have bacteria) and leaves the rest of the gut alone. Once I did that, my gut health really shot up a notch.

Keep trying. Keep doing research. You're on the right track.

u/TotoroTomato · 1 pointr/February2018Bumpers

Other replier is correct, probiotics promote healthy gut bacteria. Adults sometimes take these too, especially if they have taken broad-spectrum antibiotics, wiping out some of their good bacteria along with the bad and causing digestive problems.

Babies only start developing gut bacteria after they are born (breast milk contains it to help them!) and the probiotics are meant to help with that process. There are some studies demonstrating their effectiveness.

We are using these ones: https://www.amazon.com/Biogaia-Protectis-Baby-Drops-Vitamin/dp/B00NAG7AF4/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1520727672&sr=1-5&keywords=biogaia%2Bbaby%2Bprobiotic%2Bdrops&th=1

I think dstam has a really good point. Antibiotics kill the good gut flora and make it much easier for yeast to get out of balance. It sounds like you're doing all the right things with the wash routine. As long as it's okay with your Pediatrician I'd also give your LO some probiotics. I used these because my Dr. also recommended vit D for our baby so it was nice that it was both in one jar: http://www.amazon.com/BioGaia-ProTectis-Drops-Vitamin-D3/dp/B00NAG7AF4/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1451501959&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=gaia+probiotics

I've heard about this problem before, of things getting a bit off after receiving semen. I have also heard of people using capsulized boric acid to treat mild BV (search for it in /r/sex, pretty sure I read about it here initially) -- but not Vitamin C.

Anyway, you may be getting into a cart before horse thing. Not all bad smells are going to be a result of BV, and you could potentially do more to avoid the presumed microbial imbalance that is resulting in the smells.

I've been seeing someone with a vasectomy, and having seen this issue pop up in /r/sex before, I was a little nervous about getting smellz down there as a result. What I have been doing is the following:

  1. I always pee after sex because I'm a little UTI prone. So still pee after sex, but before that
  2. I use a clean finger to kinda clear out as much excess cum as a I can so it's not just around in there
  3. No vaginal funk
  4. Never hurts to take a good probiotic every day, I've been taking this one touted for vaginal health. Pricy but I have a long history of antibiotics use that had kinda messed up my colon microbes so I find it worthwhile to invest in good probiotics.

I imagine that other aspects of bodily chemistry (his and yours too; not sure how BC might affect your vaginal microbiome) so your mileage may vary. But I would try sticking a finger in there to clear it out before you stick Vitamin C in there?

PS Link to use on boric acid for BV, from University of Wisconsin: http://www.uwhealth.org/healthfacts/obgyn/7683.pdf

Not saying this is what you "should" be doing, just that this may be what was meant instead of Vitamin C.
u/ludlowfair · 1 pointr/Health

I had my gallbladder removed about 2 years ago. I agree with the recommendation to reduce fat in your diet, initially, but I would also recommend reducing some known irritants like tomatoes, hot peppers and acidic fruit juices (except lemon) while your body is trying to heal.

It took me a few months for my digestive system to get back to normal, and I think I helped it along by doing a few things. I took a good digestive enzyme with every meal, which helped to break down the food and fats I was consuming. Also, if you're not taking a probiotic supplement currently, I'd suggest you start with this one. If you already take one regularly, trying bumping up the count. I still take this one daily.

Your liver is working harder right now, because it's missing a partner in the digestive process. Try drinking Dandelion Root Tea in the morning on an empty stomach to support it. You don't have to do this every morning--even a few times a week is beneficial. Also, drink water with lemon throughout the day.

Your digestive system needs healthy fats to function properly, so when your body stabilizes a bit with the digestive support, start to slowly add in some healthy fats like olive or coconut oil, or even a spoon of Udo's over a salad or with some oatmeal in the morning. I still try to avoid fatty fried foods (the results can be horrifying), but I find I can still have French Fries if I pair it with a salad.

Go easy on yourself. Get lots of sleep and return gradually to your normal fitness routine. Let us know how things are going.

Some other ideas:

u/DisposeOfEventually · 1 pointr/depressionregimens

TL;DR: Try adding niacin and lithium orotate, and look into tDCS or even TMS.

I can relate to what you're going through. I've been on Wellbutrin (300mg/daily) for the past 9 years, and I know it helps raise the lower floor of my depression. (I know this because, at the end of a 6-month hiatus to see if it was having any effect, I was worse than my worst days 20 years ago.) But it doesn't seem to do a whole lot more than that for me. I'm also on Vyvanse (40mg) for ADD, which it seems to help, but even though its a stimulant, it doesn't have much of a stimulatory effect on me. (This was true on a prescription for Adderall, as well; often were the times I'd take an Adderal with my morning vitamins and Wellbutrin and just go back to sleep for a few more hours.).

In addition to Wellbutrin and Vyvanse, here's what I've done or am doing that has helped incrementally with each addition. Your mileage may vary:

  • B12 (10,000mcg sublingual)
  • Caffeine (200mg in morning and afternoon)
  • Garden of Life Mood+ Probiotics
  • Phenibut (750mg, followed by 500mg 4-8 hours later)^1
  • Niacin (500mg 4x/day)^2
  • Lithium Orotate (5mg/day)^3
  • tDCS: DLPFC F3+ and Supra Orbital Fp2- at 2mA for 20 min^4

^1 Phenibut: only on days when the barometer is dropping appreciably below mean sea-level atmospheric pressure. I'm serious.

^2 Niacin: I learned of this one in this subreddit, I think. I titrated up to 2,000mg/day over the course of a week, and I try to take it with food in my stomach. But it has to be the regular niacin that causes the flushing the first week or so until your body is used to it, not the "extended release" or "no-flush" varieties.

^3 I only recently learned this is available as a mineral supplement. Anecdotally, 5mg is about what you get from lithium occurring naturally in some well-water supplies. My psychiatrist said 5mg isn't even one percent of the amount they give people to stabilize them in a clinical setting, but he also said I was welcome to try it if I wanted. I've only been on this for a week and a half and it may only be helping me sleep, but at least that.

^4 Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Did my research, including lurking on /r/tDCS, ended up getting that SSD model I linked to above. My psychiatrist wants me to look into whether Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) would be covered by my insurance (for example, from one of these places), and I said I would, but I first wanted to try this lower-cost, easier-to-implement method of tDCS -- since they are related therapies and target the same neuron areas of the brain, basically. He told me to go ahead and give it a try.

I have to say the last week, with the lithium and the tDCS, has felt mostly different for me. I think it's everything on the list, cumulatively, probably, but it feels especially like it could be the tDCS making the bigger difference, which I've only been doing for a week now. The device could be little more than a "Placebometer 3000," but I know that I tried a lower amperage (1mA) on Sunday and then tried a different montage (placement of electrodes) on Monday, and neither one seemed to be as effective, but today, returning to the initial one I listed above, I feel back on track.

I've had good luck with probiotics. There is a probiotic subreddit on here; you might want to check it out. Also: plain yogurt (no sugar added), high-fiber vegetables and fruits like carrots and apples. Avoid sugar, nuts, and cheese. Drink a lot of water. You might try stool softeners when you're feeling really bad - they're gross to use but they work quickly. I noticed someone here suggested prunes. I wouldn't recommend dried fruit - it just bloats you even more in my experience.

I used to be severely constipated and doctors were extremely unhelpful. I had to find a treatment on my own, and taking acidophilus for a month did the trick for me. You should ideally take probiotics every day. I just ordered this (see link). It has great reviews, but it's expensive. You don't need to spend that much - get a cheap bottle at a drugstore and try that first. Health food stores often have supplement clerks who can give you some advice about what's best for your condition, and which products are most popular. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IO9PMDO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One more thing: A lot of people believe mental illness can be triggered by gut flora that's out of balance. I think there's probably some truth in that. It's something I'm still learning about, though.

I think every item produced by Vibrant Health does -- for example see this product's ingredient listing.

My feeling is that if I'm digesting something multiple times a day, I should be able to see exactly what it's composed of. Everything else I eat, I know the composition... what not something that I'd plan on using as a staple of my diet. And, generally, I find that "proprietary" means the product is loaded with cheap ingredients and dusted lightly with the more expensive ingredients.
