It was really easy, actually! I just back stitched right down the center, and it's been totally sturdy. Make sure you measure/cut how long it needs to be carefully, though (I almost had an incident.)

Tried with the Needle nose pliers like the guy in the store suggested, not much luck, all six on both boots were really rough and cutting pretty deeply into the tongue, not impressing in the tongue, but cutting. I ended up buying one of these but it's like 2 weeks for delivery.
Will be taking them to one of the local cobbler shops in a couple days to have them do it. I really want to wear these, but don't want them all chewed up.
Ripstop has two styles of those, though not an exact match:

Mine barrel for the back also broke first try. I wound up buying some barrel adjusters with a clip on one end to run through the loop the old one used. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Paracord-Planet-Cylinder-Cord-Locks/dp/B07P8SM6Q9
I actually just saw a blogger I follow post about these little thingies that you can clip to your chain inside your bag to adjust the length. I just used one on my Chanel woc because the strap was too long. Here’s the link on AMAZON
40 Fastex Buckles for $7.49
Thanks again for the suggestion! I finally got a chance to work on this and got one leg done. I removed the zipper all together then put the eyelets on. I ended up going with Paracord instead of leather cord because it was stronger and a little more economical. Below is the kit I got for the eyelets and some pictures of the one leg done.

Youre welcome.
It can be but if you are packing and unpacking you have to adjust the straps every time. It was too much trouble for me so I swapped to these
You can do shrink wrap.. but it's hot. But cheap..
I use vet wrap but it's short and can get expensive if you play with it a lot.
How about straps and buckles?
Something like this
With buckles like these
Just a thought.
I realize that this isn't to scale, but this would be a good place to start: https://www.amazon.com/Ford-Unisex-adult-Burst-Seatbelt-Black/dp/B000RY8A5Q/ref=cts_ap_3_vtp

Amazon. The buttons do look very cool, but they're pretty flimsy and I don't expect them to last. I wouldn't recommend.

Back in the day when I used to stud everything(jackets/pants/shirts/bags), I had a hand press stud machine that did things like that. Mine looked like this and I got it at a garage sale when I was a kid.
My only concern is if there are any safety issues with effectively locking a child into a pair of PJs.
(I can't think of any, but anytime you lock someone into something you have to think about it...)
There are a few options, depending on how strong, able, and determined the child is to getting out.
On the easy low-cost end you could get a grommet tool and put two grommets near the top of the zipper, then put something through the loop in the zipper pull and through the two grommets. This could be a simple spring clasp, a zip tie, whatever.
You could put grommets on either side of the opening all the way up the zipper line and run a cord up through the grommet holes shoelace style and then tie them in a knot at the top, or even use a lockable cable.
Alternatively, you could hire a seamstress to modify the PJs with one of several options depending on how dedicated the child is to getting out of the PJs.
You could replace the sliders only if the existing zipper is compatible with the new slider, such as:
https://smile.amazon.com/YKK-Nylon-Zipper-Slider-Locking/dp/B07G72X9DX/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=zipper+lock&qid=1572287728&s=arts-crafts&sr=1-5
You could buy also buy a lockable zipper that is much stronger and intended for luggage, then have the seamstress swap out the zipper completely. Then the zipper could be locked with a miniature padlock at night. https://www.ebay.com/itm/26-HEAVY-BROWN-BRASS-HOLDALL-TWIN-SLIDER-LOCKABLE-ZIP-no8/351080518584?hash=item51be0793b8:g:1kEAAOSwWTZckO8x
I'm wondering, could the child be taught to press a button when they need to use the restroom? Then you could have a wireless doorbell?
Does the child turn on the lights when he/she wakes up? Could you rig up some sort of alarm that goes off if the light is turned on?
Here are the rivets I used:

It has a few different sizes, and I used most of the super-long ones on this project. The small ones are super-small - "might be to small to be useful for anything," honestly.
6 inch wide Velcro strips fit perfectly. Just cut them with some scissors to whatever size you think is appropriate and you can essentially adjust the retention of your Velcro.

I don't see why not. I use a clip for my wristband. I can't stand all the extra fabric flapping around LOL

I’m guessing the one in pic is 2 inches long. So far I have found some that are close to 1 inch long.
