You could buy a pair or two of cycling-specific underwear!

Here's a gender neutral pair: https://www.amazon.com/4ucycling-Unisex-Bicycle-Cycling-Underwear/dp/B01489QOOO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1469723721&sr=8-2&keywords=cycling+underwear+womens

I also saw some that were designed for male or female use.

I have a jacket from Proviz which is pretty ridiculous in headlights. Expensive, but you’ll definitely be seen.

I would go to these youtube channel and watch some videos. These are all favorites around here and will get you loads of good info:

Good gear to have would include:

  • hydration pack with storage for gear - I use an Osprey Viper 9 but there are many out there

  • Bike multi-tool

  • portable air pump

  • spare tube

  • spare chain link

  • pair of shorts with a quality Chamois pad (grundle pad, thank me later) like Santic Cycling Shorts

Most important, get out and have fun. Welcome to the sport (obsession).

Big guy here: used to wear 44 jeans and could fit these Zoic Shorts in 3XL - the padded liner is removable and you can actually pass them as plain shorts. You can also get just the padded undershorts from another brand. By extension, if you're smaller, you can just get the next size down.

I'm down to a 40 now and the shorts still fit because of a velcro strap on each side that cinches the shorts smaller. Nice breeze when wearing them. Just make sure you get a cycling jersey - the longer back keeps you from having "plumber butt" as /u/letseatpaste so eloquently put it :).

College student on a budget here as well. I bought these recently from amazon and so far have been fairly pleased with them. Looks like they're on sale right now!

Cold running is all about layering. I can get all the way down to about 15-20º wearing some combination of:

- Merino base layer

- Thermal tights (I actually love these )

- Grid fleece (Patagonia R1)

- Wind shell (Mountain Hardwear Ghost Lite)

- Waterproof Jacket (Dynafit Transalper)

- Gloves

- Beanie or Buff

There are plenty of good, totally waterproof jackets that breathe well enough. My Dynafit is awesome but I don't love the fit. Check out the North Face Hyperair, Arcteryx Norvan, or Ultimate Direction Ultra 2. But anything this waterproof/light is expensive.

I bought the Zoic Men's Ether Shorts for this season and love them. Adjustable waistband and lots of pockets. Beware they run small though!

I bought 2 pairs of those and I am loving them. The padding could be better so I imagine on really long rides (40 is my longest this summer) they may not be the best. But on my rides, I haven't had any issues.

You should they help a lot. I bought mine off Amazon for $9 a piece. Also I found that the seat height plays a big part. I keep mine high and it helps me stay off the seat and more weight on my legs and pedals.

What about this jacket from Pearl Izumi? http://amzn.com/B003BLOU0G

I have a local Pearl Izumi outlet where I bought a windbreaker this winter from on clearance for $70, and I like everything other than the fact that they only had black. I don't think it's the same jacket as this, but the top review states this jacket has no insulation so it's probably very similar.

u/mcgeggy · 2 pointsr/cycling

I see a lot of price ranges for these on Amazon - the Endura Xtract Gel Cycling Bibshort is $79.99, or is this another brand that you should avoid the lower end offerings?

Is what I was recommended for a jock on here. A couple people had success with it. My wife bought the orange one. It's easily the most comfortable I've experienced.

I also bought these compression shorts:
https://www.amazon.com/Neleus-Mens-Compression-Short-Black/dp/B01DKB8MXM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542928486&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=neleus+mens+3+pack+athletic+compression&psc=1
The idea is simple: keep the boys high and snug with minimal movement after surgery to reduce/prevent pain, unnecessary swelling, etc. and speed recovery.

Some people go with one or the other, some wear both simultaneously, whatever. I plan to use the shorts most of the time, but have to bring a jock to my appointment.

u/crowek · 2 pointsr/bicycling

Seconding this. You can find them on the Canadian amazon for around 85-110CAD instead of his link. Alternatively you can find them in YYC at BowCycle. They had to hike the price up to 100 because of the dollar sinking, but they sold them to me for 85 so you might be able to convince them. Not sure who else sells them in town - maybe BikeBike. By far my best bike purchase.

edit; ah, just noticed your bar ends. Not sure if the Bowcycle ones fit those. You could ask. Alternatively, there's this.

Padded seats tend to have more padding - seems great, but actually causes more discomfort and numbness in the long run. They also don't account for chafing - you don't want a friction burn between your legs.

So slim hard seats are actually more comfortable over time and cause less damage to the skin and tissue around your sit bones. You need to make sure your sit bones (ischial tuberosity) are well situated. The sit bones of your hips are designed to support weight for long periods of time, where a plush seat disperses your weight to muscles and other areas, which leads to longer pain and numbness. Padded shorts/underwear designed for cycling move with you as you shift in the seat. You can often get inserts just designed like underwear so you don't need to get a whole new set of workout pants - this is what I often use since I have a bazillion pairs of workout pants, and it's also far cheaper than just buying cycling pants. I hope this helps!

Here's a great pair that I use that are only $10.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01489QQQA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_8AZkxbKVDVYCY

Edit: also, clip in shoes will really up your workout, since your feet are constantly connected and engaged with the bike. Not only do you have more stability, but you get a better push and follow through on the pedal, workout more muscles than just engaging your foot to the pedal. Gloves, for me anyway, for indoor cycling is just because I'm a sweaty beast.

u/StupidSexyFlanders14 · 1 pointr/MTB

Rather than try to get an adjustable short that is also padded, try buying some liners that you wear under the shorts. I buy these and they're super cheap and hold up decently well.

u/hamhed · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

I just started doing a 14.5 mile commute in January. I practiced riding there (or almost there) and back once or twice each weekend for 3 weekends just to see how long it took me. After 3 weeks I was champing at the bit to start doing it for real. And that first day was... easy! I was getting used to doing a 29 mile ride so doing just 14.5 and then having a 9 hour break before going back felt pretty chill in comparison.

There are a few things you have to prepare for though. First is make sure you're going to be comfortable on an 1+ hour long ride. Drop bars helped for me, and I got a pair of cheap biking shorts off Amazon which helped too. Second make sure you have enough calories/carbs for a 1+ hour ride. I tend to eat mostly low carb/low gi when I'm not riding, so I had to step up my carb game in the mornings and afternoons in order to keep my performance on the bike up. I've been making sure to get 30-50g of carbs around 30 minutes before I ride.

Try bike shorts, they put a little extra padding where it counts. It wont help your knees much, but it does help the haunches

u/S70rmCrow · 1 pointr/running

I bought nike 2-in-1 shorts. they are "ok", but what feels better is the 9" compression shorts (longer is better for anti-chafing): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DKB8MXM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you’re interested for something on your legs there are some great inexpensive options available on Amazon. As much as I love my local shop, it’s hard justifying $100-$200 for some of the name brand stuff when things like this are available.

These work great in the range you’re talking about. I haven’t worn them below 30, but I suspect they would work down into the mid 20’s.

Baleaf Men's Thermal Cycling... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PVXNC92?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I routinely wear these down into the teens and even single digits. The pant legs are a little baggier so you might want a band or some electrical tape around the drive side.

I live in New Hampshire, when we’re near zero it’s snow, not rain or sleet.

I wear a compression under shirt, a slightly heavier fabric, not that thin style. Then a long sleeve wicking shirt, then my winter running coat. Legs are winter compression. This pair worked out great last winter. Baleaf Men's Thermal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PVXN7SS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_YrMB4J5lr2VhE
Single pocket I’m back waist for key.

I don’t wear super heavy gloves. Just run-of-the-mill winter running gloves. I pull my fingers into fists for the first couple miles. Then I can’t let them out into fingers.

If it’s windy I may use a balaclava. But my breath will normally freeze on that and it becomes useless aside from being a neck warmer.

I find after a few miles your body core has so much heat to give it sends it back to the extremities. It’s really only the first 20 minutes I question leaving the house. There’s been times I’m out for 90 plus minutes and I’m unzipping the coat. Or the hat is sweaty so I take it off for a minute and then it freezes.

u/Kraphtyone · 1 pointr/pelotoncycle

Amen. If you’re going to do it (and don’t ride outdoors) you definitely don’t need to fork over 80 bucks for a pair. Think 8 bucks on Amazon.

like this? Tons of review for the men version, but not as much for women. Are the women version as good?

I am not 130 lbs, due to self conscious ideals, bike shorts weren't really on my list of what I wanted, even though I needed such a thing.

if he has some comfy shorts he likes to wear riding. I have a couple pairs of these liners that I find absolutely wonderful.

the shorts that you get them with the zoic ether shorts I have found to be quite satisfactory as well.

I would recommend both.

u/adkhiker137 · 1 pointr/bicycling

I am looking for advice on a good pair of shorts or liners on a budget. I'm new to long-distance cycling (but not cycling in general), and am training for a century. Trips over 30 miles can get a bit... uncomfortable for me. I already have a great seat (Serfas Hybrid RX). I have searched other similar posts here, and it seems like Pearl Izumi is the general consensus for best brand with lower price options, but I am a bit worried about the leg fit. I have about a 35" waist and 24" thighs, and I read that the Izumis can be a bit tight in the thigh. Is that the case? I was also looking at Zoics, how are they for a fit for a guy with wide hips and thighs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

u/Dragoniel · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

> I am going to be looking for warmer gloves this year.

I've ordered mitts. I have tried everything up to ski gloves, and it doesn't really work very well when cycling for over an hour in sub -5c temperatures, no matter the gloves. This, however, should work (in combination with lighter gloves).
